I haven't checked the spreadsheet, but my impression from what I've read is that none of these 8 lists are very similar to each other. If they had been, then I agree that would have been suspicious.
It's not Michael Jackson, Queen, Beatles and Bee Gees (or even R.E.M.) that gets to me (in fact I welcome it) but Linkin Park (3rd highest new entry) Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Mariah Carey, etc. getting to the top 500 and in exchange Fats Domino, The Drifters, N.W.A., B.B. King, Donovan, John Lee Hooker, The Islay Brothers are out.
I'm just disappointed and looking for some sad excuse.
You mean that because there are some artists you don't like, their lists could be partly trolling, with a mix of artists they really like and artists they added to make fun of our poll? I doubt that.

Upon a cursory look at the Excel file, I can say you're right, there's no trolling. This is in all probability due to new bloods and their fondness of mainstream acts. I apologize to anyone who took offense.

...whatever, I want to thanks all the participant to this game (and a ++++ for JimmyJazz of course). As usual, the biggest pleasure for me is to look the artists out of the top 500 in the goal of digging some unknown (for me) new artists.

Not sure what we can take out of this, except that we seem to have a greater appreciation of female singers (except for some reason Ella Fitgerald and Joni Mitchell). On the top 50, Bjork, PJ and Kate Bush all climbed significantly and lower in the top 200 Joana Newsom, Tori Amos, Sleater-Kinney, Kylie Minogue and more especially Gillian Welch great big boosts.
Some of the climbs might be due to constant praise of artists by a few (Elliott Smith by me, Steely Dan by Henry and Henrik, Gainsbourg by Romain, Jacques Brel by nicolas and Honorio...) or at least the fact that picking them on a fairly regular basis for moderately acclaimed or unacclaimed polls made them more familiar to AM regulars.
Other seem to have a recent released effect, whether it's an album that made a discography even more full fledged (Vampire Weekend, Swans, Sufjan Stevens) or that helped put them back in the spotlight (Sleater-Kinney, PJ Harvey)
And a lot of the others have figured prominently in various polls (Brian Eno, King Crimson, George Harrison...)
A few don't seem related to a very specific AM thing, no idea why Wu-Tang Clan climbed 58 spots, the Smashing Pumpkins 45 or the National 17.

The falls are anyone's guess ! We clearly took part in the decline of the R&B acts (Marvin Gaye lost 11 spots, Sam Cooke 49, Curtis Mayfield 29, Aretha Franklin 16, the Suprêmes 42, Sly and the Family Stone 17...) but why are they, the Kinks, Public Enemy, Van Morrison and (SHAME ON YOU) the Beastie Boys dropping is a mystery.
We went against the total results on a few spots, we for instance dropped the Bee Gees by 46 spots

I noticed an few bands missing the word 'The'. Most are recognisable e.g. '[The] National' but just thought I should explain that the band I voted for listed as 'The' in line 801 of the spreadsheet should say 'The The'

Yes, all the bands are missing the word 'the,' which I believe Jimmy did to make it unified (some people write 'The Beatles,' some write 'Beatles, The,' and others even just write 'Beatles'). That's one of those tricky things about these polls; the automated method I used requires everyone's names to be an exact match, and I mean down to the capitalization. That can be a problem when every other person lists it as either 'Neu!' or 'NEU!', not to mention the issue with invisible spacing at the end of certain people's lists. Excel simply doesn't recognize The Beatles and Beatles as the same item - these problems get exponentially harder to handle when we get to songs and albums (just think of the nightmare that is the various takes on The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction).

But, yes, the 'The' listed on the file is 'The The.'

I'm a bit surprised that there was not a single vote for Jackie Wilson (AM rating=379/ 2013 Poll rating=303/ my rating=246).

Other notables without a single vote include:
The Lovin' Spoonful (478/726/144)
Big Joe Turner (535/211/1464)
Carl Perkins (540/220/754)
The Four Seasons (712/725/148) - rated as the 26th best selling act of all time by Billboard

Other top billboard sellers without a single vote:
Neil Diamond (billboard rank=31/ my rating=163/ AM rank=2022)
Connie Francis (35/1428/2853)
Brenda Lee (36/1039/1221)
Bobby Vinton (44/738/NR)
Chubby Checker (53/852/892)
Rick Nelson (56/453/862)
Paul Anka (60/1060/1858)
TLC (61/1274/323)
Richard Marx (73/766/NL)
Starship (74/307/NR)
Chris Brown (78/1393/NL)
Neil Sedaka (85/999/2810)
John Denver (89/924/1919)
Tony Orlando and Dawn (91/1089/2870)
The Fifth Dimension (95/198/1563)
Captain and Tenille (96/896/2502)
Andy Gibb (97/1488/NR)

Is anyone doing a multiple regression analysis? I remember we had that on an album poll once and it was fun pointing out the 'AM factor', the 'hip hop factor', etc.

Thanks for the great roll-out of the results, Jimmy and BleuPanda! This must be the most commented-on results thread in AMF history (and a great argument for drawing out the results of major polls over several weeks).

I'd be interested in seeing the individual lists if someone would like to post them. I'm loving these alternative lists, particularly the breakout of +25 posts on the forum, which produced interesting differences that resolved a lot of the arguments on this thread.

Part of me thinks Captain Beefheart would rank higher if Trout Mask Replica did not exist. His work in the 70s, as well as his debut album Safe As Milk, would probably appeal to a lot of people who are turned off by TMR, which is likely the first album everyone listens to by him.

As someone who has run multiple songs and albums polls on this forum, this is so true. Titles that include parenthesis, very long titles (think Fiona Apple), and songs/albums that share the same name (say, "Come Together") are the worst enemy to compiling these results!

Thanks, Jimmy and everyone who contributed with all the statistics and comments.
I expected a little more of this disco revival. I thought Village People and Boney M woud crack the top 50. :happy-smileyinthebox:

I find it interesting to see how Eno and Steely Dan place in these two pools of voters as well.

I wonder if streaming availability has an impact on the list. Prince and Neil Young are both down.

Of the jazz artists that have been mentioned on this thread, Charles Mingus would probably have made the top 10 of my list, and Miles Davis too might have been mentioned somewhere. The Modern jazz quartet would definitely have made it as well, and others like Edward L. WIlkerson Jr. and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (among others) would also be possible candidates. But I just thought that it would be too much of a hassle too include them, and hence didn't do so.

I also forgot to include the Beatles and the Stone Temple Pilots on my list. Well, no matter.

I love the "jazz-heads" list. It's amazing.

And, Moonbeam, Annie and Grace Jones could make my list next time around, probably around #86-100.

I would've liked if another jazz head could've given these at least 1 vote.

Two more genre-centric lists. One sees the Beatles unseated at the top.

This one is from the eight people who voted for at least two of Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, and Boards of Canada. I wanted to do 3/5 of the top 5 electronic artists, but there are so few electronic musicians that made the list (sticking to primary styles like Techno, House, Jungle, etc. and excluding those who came at electronic music from a different tradition like Kraftwerk) it was not really feasible.

Electronic fan list:
1 | Radiohead
2 | David Bowie
3 | Beatles
4 | Bob Dylan
5 | Velvet Underground
6 | Pink Floyd
7 | Beach Boys
8 | Miles Davis
9 | Brian Eno
10 | OutKast
11 | Aphex Twin
12 | Led Zeppelin
13 | Bjork
14 | My Bloody Valentine
15 | Talking Heads
16 | Portishead
17 | Public Enemy
18 | Daft Punk
19 | Smiths
20 | Kanye West
21 | Boards of Canada
22 | Rolling Stones
23 | Cure
24 | Sigur Rós
25 | Prince
26 | Arcade Fire
27 | Massive Attack
28 | Kinks
29 | Bruce Springsteen
30 | R.E.M.
31 | Godspeed You! Black Emperor
32 | James Brown
33 | Michael Jackson
34 | John Coltrane
35 | Joni Mitchell
36 | Stevie Wonder
37 | Funkadelic/Parliament
38 | Nick Drake
39 | Kraftwerk
40 | Marvin Gaye
41 | PJ Harvey
42 | Joy Division
43 | Stooges
44 | Clash
45 | Neil Young
46 | LCD Soundsystem
47 | Jimi Hendrix
48 | Tom Waits
49 | New Order
50 | Madonna

Here's another from only the 22 people who listed at least three of Kanye West, OutKast, Kendrick Lamar, Public Enemy, and Beastie Boys. Note I was not among the 22, since Kanye, PE, and the Beasties missed out on my top 100.

Hip hop fan list:
1 | Beatles
2 | Radiohead
3 | David Bowie
4 | Bob Dylan
5 | Rolling Stones
6 | Bruce Springsteen
7 | Smiths
8 | Kanye West
9 | Stevie Wonder
10 | Prince

19 | Jimi Hendrix
20 | Clash

24 | Kendrick Lamar
25 | Bob Marley
26 | Miles Davis
27 | Talking Heads
28 | Neil Young
29 | OutKast
30 | Marvin Gaye
31 | Who
32 | Elvis Costello

43 | Daft Punk
44 | Simon & Garfunkel
45 | John Coltrane
46 | Beck
47 | James Brown

66 | Nick Cave
67 | Funkadelic/Parliament
68 | Otis Redding
69 | Nina Simone
70 | Leonard Cohen
71 | White Stripes
72 | Creedence Clearwater Revival
73 | Coldplay
74 | Doors
75 | PJ Harvey
76 | Stooges
77 | Police
78 | Black Sabbath
79 | ABBA
80 | Elton John
81 | Lou Reed
82 | My Bloody Valentine
83 | Chuck Berry
84 | Fleetwood Mac
85 | Aretha Franklin
86 | Ray Charles
87 | M.I.A.
88 | Frank Ocean
89 | Red Hot Chili Peppers
90 | Charles Mingus
91 | Nick Drake
92 | Green Day
93 | Nine Inch Nails
94 | Grimes
95 | Billie Holiday
96 | Arctic Monkeys
97 | Paul Simon
98 | Frank Sinatra
99 | Sam Cooke
100 | Tribe Called Quest

I thought about doing versions for modern classical and "world" music, but those got so little support that it would be more like looking at an individual's list than a consensus list.

I was thinking of doing something like that for people who voted for ABBA. I'm not super skilled at Excel though, so it would take me a while.

Jeff wrote:Two more genre-centric lists.

1 | Radiohead
8 | Miles Davis
9 | Brian Eno
10 | OutKast
11 | Aphex Twin
14 | My Bloody Valentine
16 | Portishead
17 | Public Enemy
18 | Daft Punk
21 | Boards of Canada
24 | Sigur Rós
27 | Massive Attack
31 | Godspeed You! Black Emperor
34 | John Coltrane
37 | Funkadelic/Parliament
39 | Kraftwerk
43 | Stooges
46 | LCD Soundsystem
49 | New Order
A lot of these alternate lists were pretty correlated with the main list, but this one is crazy! Interesting to see Kraftwerk, LCD, and New Order don't get much of a bump when counting only electronic fans, while seemingly unrelated artists like MBV, GYBE, Funkadelic/Parliament, and the Stooges get huge bumps.

Funny, I was going to ask for this and then I scrolled down the page and saw it! Eno seemed to get a huge bump in a lot of these alternate lists so he serves as an interesting one to profile. Interesting that the top 50 remains mostly the same in this split while the 50-100 is almost totally different.

First and foremost, thank you JimmyJazz for putting together this most enjoyable poll! Your rock!! It has taught me that people of this forum are very passionate about their artist choices and music in general. I wanted to make sure that nobody thinks I was in occlusion with anybody else about sabotaging or fixing the results. I voted honestly for my favorites and see no purpose to even attempt to sway the outcome, in the end, it is only cheating. Besides, I don't have the time or effort for that kind of charade. I was barely able to keep up with all the posts as it is. They came fast and furious when results were posted. ha ha I might add that they were very entertaining to read and I loved learning about all the differing opinions. You guys are great.

I have to agree that I honestly don't feel anybody was trying to fix or sway the results of the poll. I think it is mere coincidence and I am sure some will disagree. Even if it were so, the top 100 was still very righteous. Enough said about that issue. It has been driven home.

Will anybody ever top the Beatles? ha ha I am glad David Bowie came so close, well not that close but, second place is a damn fine spot to have landed among so many great artists. Bravo!!

I love how everybody's lists are so diversified and not concentrated on one specific genre. Diversity, is a wonderful thing. I did not notice any nasty outbreaks of vehement disagreement as in previous polls. I think Henrik is to thank for that, a very good diplomat.

I want to thank everyone for being so friendly and welcoming. It is much appreciated. It makes me feel like my past fears were unsubstantiated. I enjoyed reading everyone's posts. My only regret is that I did not get to post more.

I hope to participate in other polls that are newly formed. Nice job to you too, Bluepanda!! Excellent Excel skills.

Pretty great poll all around! Thank you JimmyJazz.

Obvious #1 was obvious, but David Bowie was a satisfying and appropriate choice for the silver medal spot. Not only his death, but even Blackstar gave him that bump at the end.

The rest of the Top 100 was pretty good too; a mix of classic and modern to showcase our love of all music and varied diverse tastes.

I was right about Bjork being the highest female as well as Kendrick and Kanye's general positions. Some of the alternate lists are interesting as well.

Good job and can't wait for the next major poll!

Welcome to the forums, Neil! I'm happy you enjoyed it. Even though it appears that not all those who voted for the first time stayed, there's bound to be one or two who'll stuck around. I feel you'll be a major contributor in the future.

The next major poll would be albums, sometime next year. I kind of wish they weren't so infrequent (one a year, so a 3 year wait for the next edition of each poll), but I'm sure others would feel overwhelmed by more frequent lists.

Me too but there are minor polls always happening but it seems the major polls are the ones attracting new members. I for one first participated in the top 500 songs poll despite lurking in the forum for years.
