Albums were a significant investment in the 1970's. I bought albums by neither artist. I did hear and enjoy Steely Dan's singles on the radio. Brain Eno was the guy from Roxy Music who made albums adored by the (often unreliable) music papers. Even John Peel played Eno only rarely.

This poll Is about personal preference not historical preference or significance. More recently, I have listened to most of the albums of both artists and now Brian Eno is at #48 on my list and Steely Dan not in the top 100. Our tastes are somewhat divergent however, as I have Bjork, Nick Cave & Talking Heads in my top 5 and Pixies in my top 10!!
I am grateful for divergent tastes as they often provide me with wonderful new discoveries.

I've been looking through the comments of the 2013 poll. I commented on most of the artists at the time, with many instances of hoping to get into certain artists more for the next time. Unfortunately, that hasn't really happened, as I've been too busy for most new music (I'd be hard pressed to put out a top 10 albums list from all of 2014-2016 when it was easy for me to put one together for every individual year before then ). However, the very last comment in that poll made me smile.
Pierre wrote:Awesome job, here, Nassim, I did not vote but it was an interesting results. If I'm still around next time, I might give it a shot.

Moonbeam, since you're so much in those 80s female fronted acts, you should definitely try Mylène Farmer, Jeanne Mas, Buzy, Lio, Luna Parker, maybe 70s and 80s France Gall, and maybe AS Dragon (who actually wrote a tribute song to Blondie, Debbie Harry and Siouxsie!) and Plastiscines. Most of them are despised by French critics, but French critics are kind of incompetent when it comes to synthpop.
I got into Mylène Farmer while in France this past October, enough to where she placed #47 in my list this time. Got to love AM for the recommendations, even ones missed at the time that eventually bore fruit!

He and Prince have the biggest pop crossover success of the RnB artists, so hopefully they can be robust to the fall of RnB here.

From the results, I can say that the problem with the free fall of R&B artists is not so much the votes but their respective rankings in the ballots of those who voted for them, to illustrate:

#92 Ray Charles (369.4 points/16 votes) vs. #57 Bee Gees (531.8 points/14 votes)

#71 Aretha Franklin (453 points/22 votes); #55 James Brown (551.5 points/24 votes) vs. #51| The White Stripes (570.1 points/20 votes); #43 Sufjan Stevens (570.1 points/20 votes)

#36 Marvin Gaye (802.6 points/35 votes) vs. The Kinks (32 votes); Elvis (30 votes); Bob Marley (30 votes); Pixies (32 votes); Madonna (29 votes)

I voted for the above-mentioned R&B artists but not in my top 30. I think this will probably where Bruce and his friend (who ranked oldies acts very high) will be especially missed.

Wow! I did not expect The Clash or Neil Young to fall outside of the top 25! Looks like there could be an interesting top 10, though it often seems that way and then we all fall in line.

Hooray for Björk and The Cure in the top 25!

That's great, Bruno! Were it not for my newfound infatuation for world music (I think it's a phase of mine for now) I would have rated them as high.

And thanks Jimmy for the additional 5 artists for today!!
Wow, Queen hasn't yet appeared ("Don't Stop Me Now" is getting discovered by the young'ns) and also Michael Jackson (Prince effect? they're always unjustly compared) and Simon and Garfunkel (Paul Simon got a big gain too, Disturbed effect? lol)!

With today's batch, I think I'm down to two left in my top 50 (both top 30 though) among those with a chance to make it. I imagine one is a lock for the top three, while the other is maybe in the 11-15 range. I suppose we're done with jazz now with Miles bowing out, unless Alice Coltrane makes a shock appearance in the top 25 (and please let Alice Coltrane make a shock appearance in the top 25--she can have the Beatles' spot if they're not using it ).

Totally agree. I'll never understand why The Kinks are not a consensus top 10 artist. I noticed they placed below several artists who didn't have an album or song ranked nearly as high as Village Green and "Waterloo Sunset" in our album or song all-time polls. Maybe they're somehow forgotten when it comes time to make this list. There's something that strikes me as being somewhat tragic about how they were never nearly as acclaimed or popular as their contemporaries, and how many casual music fans (and sadly, many on this forum) think of them mostly as the band that made "You Really Got Me," "Lola," and some somewhat cheesy late 70s/early 80s hits.

Lots of great artists in the last batch too. It's funny how Madonna placed near her AM ranking here, and in my own list too. It looks like almost everyone now have a consensual idea of where she belongs in the rankings :D

I've noticed a lot of complains about r'n'b getting smashed, but I have to say that I'm also disappointed with the underrepresentation of funk and hip-hop personally. Aside from our token Public Enemy and Kanye and newcomer Kendrick Lamar, there's next to no hip-hop, and Sly and the Family Stone and Parliament/Funkadelic missed the top. Genres that need to be (re)discovered around this parts.

I think this is mostly due to the different sets of voters. JimmyJazz made a huge effort to boost participation, and that's partly why there may seem to be some inconsistencies across the album, song, and artist polls. If you made lists out of only those who participated in all 3 polls, you'd probably see a much closer alignment.

Fully agreed on funk and hip hop! I can't see how Parliament/Funkadelic isn't a consensus top 25 artist. And while I am not a big hip hop fan, it feels underrepresented to me as well. But then again, there are so many different genres vying for attention that something has to give.

At least most of the hip hop artists (those who made it in the list) are making great strides; all the great and not so great R&B artists have fallen down or are out of the top 500 completely. I'm perfectly fine having no Sugarhill Gang, Cypress Hill, Ice T, Lil' Wayne or Queen Latifah in the top 500 although the absence of LL Cool J and Lauryn Hill is somewhat egregious (even if I didn't vote for them).

I would be surprised if Queen doesn't appear in the next 5 because Queen came in at 54 in 2013, 53 in 2010 and 96 in 2008.

Others in the next five could include:
The Cure, Bjork, The Smiths, Simon and Garfunkel, Arcade Fire, Michael Jackson and U2.

So assuming nobody changed its forum nickname, 25 persons voted both on 2013 and this year (the most surprising omission in the list being nicolas).
There are some surprises if you boil down the 2013 poll so those people, 9 new entries in the top 100, most surprisingly Low at #80 and Lush at #98 with only 2 votes (but a #1 vote by luvulongTIM).

3 of the biggest falls are Parliament/Funkadelic, from #85 to #124 (losing poliuks #12 and Maximumbeef #8 votes), the Stooges from 63 to 139 (losing poliuks #4 and Maximumbeef #2 votes) and the Ramones from 67 to 158 (losing, you guessed it, poliuks #7 and Maximumbeef #4 votes). Further down the line, oldies that appeared high in Hymie and Bruce lists are taking huge drops, especially Fats Domino from #102 to 257, with only Bruno's vote keeping him afloat.

Any reason you should suspect this? If it's true, this would cycle back to my initial problem; a group of people unrelated to the site coming in solely to support their favored artist as opposed to having an interest in this specific forum. It would be hard to take Jackson's placement seriously if the only reason it happened is because someone linked this on a Michael Jackson fan forum; of course everyone there would rank him highly. It'd be comparable to the Undertale-issue I explained earlier.

It reminds me of another incident on the other forum I use; someone tried to run an artist tourney through all the different music boards. However, the metal board had a bigger user base than the rest of the boards combined, and they would vote almost exclusively metal. It created this jarring experience for my board and most of the others, because almost no one voted for the metal acts, yet the final 16 were pretty much nothing but. The numbers in this poll obviously aren't as large, but it creates this dynamic where the poll (if this claim is true) is essentially 90% our results with 10% another forum's results mixed in. This would be quite different than, say, every new user happening to stumble across the site on their own, since those coming from another forum would be guided with specific intent.

Under normal circumstances, if we did remove every new voter, the results would still look pretty much the same (since a random sampling of the population should have a fairly even spread); if we removed all the new voters and certain specific artists fall hard, that suggests some outside shenanigans. There's also the third possibility, that a few big Queen and/or Jackson fans stumbled across the forum at the same time, completely unaware of each other's presence before the results rolled out; hopefully this is the case.

I'm a huge Queen fan (they were my #1 artist at some point around 2010 or so and they still sit firmly in my top 10), but I do agree that "We Will Rock You" is not among their best work at all. But they can be forgiven since they also provided us with gems like "Don't Stop Me Now", "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Killer Queen".

I'm pretty sure all the newcomers come from a music forum dedicated to a specific artist, and, I don't know why, I imagine that this artist might be Michael Jackson.
It'd be comparable to the Undertale-issue I explained earlier.
.
Non, no reason ! Just their first votes. They know each other for sure because they votes for the same artists and never votes for the others, so I imagine they know through a forum and share the same tastes. And it's just an intuition but, except for MJ (or maybe Queen, I still hesitate  ) I don't see any artist which can consolidate this kind of core fans.

But after all, it's maybe only a dream I make and if they stay here after and share their tastes, why not!

P.S.: if Prince finishes first and that proves that they are all Prince fans, I promise to listen only to Dylan this year for punishment :D

I'm sorry if you've touched on this before, Romain, but why do you hate Bob Dylan so much?

Oh Babydoll, I thought you knew me
If, indeed, I don't like his music, it's more a running gag than anything else.

If I remember correctly, I already said some years ago that his voice reminded me of a mix between the dental drill and a rusty chainsaw and, except for few songs (Lay Lady Lay and Knock on the heaven's door for example), there was almost no melodies, so, it's not my cup of tea.

But I do not take music too seriously and it's been a while that I realized that their are no such thing that universal acclaimed artist or songs or whatever. It is useless to try to convince that our taste is the better. Only one word count : pleasure.

Also in those songs his voice sounds better than usually.

True, but you are a fan of Serge Gainsbourg... I'll leave you with your "un goût de chiotte" and I'll leave with mine. :music-listening:

I'm predicting that the recent deaths of Bowie and Prince, who already performed very well in these polls, could result in the Rolling Stones falling out of the top 3. My crazy guess for the top 5:
1. The Beatles
2. Bob Dylan
3. David Bowie
4. Prince
5. The Rolling Stones

Then again, Radiohead could also see a gain with their new album (and re-claim their #2 position an older poll), and maybe Dylan will fall. I might even be underestimating Bowie, who could potentially steal the #2 spot this year.

If we based an artists worth just for his/her voice or ability to hold a melody then there's no business having Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground (Reed & Nico), The Smashing Pumpkins (Billy Corgan), Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Kanye West (rapping skill) in the top 100.

I do hope you're right. As much as I would love to see Prince to well in this poll, I've always preferred Radiohead over the Purple One. That being said, I feel pretty confident that the top 6 will be comprised of (not necessarily in this order) The Beatles, Dylan, Bowie, the Stones, Prince and Radiohead. I would be surprised to see anybody else's name in the top 6 this year.

I've got to say, I'm thrilled that both of these legends are well-received in this poll, and that we can all appreciate the merits of both. Two masters of fusing the subversive with the infectious, through dissonance/minimalism/vacuity and pristine sound/sardonicism/opulence.
