re: Bee Gees

1969's "Odessa" was on my long list of potential Moderately Acclaimed nominations this year. I may have to boost it up for MA8.

I would be very surprised if they were in the top 50. They seem to be the most passed over artist for induction in to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame with being on the ballot 10 or 11 times. Even if Chic does not make it, Nile Rodgers should!!

Nile Rodgers is a genius. I really need to explore more of his work, with Chic and with other acts.

Risqué is such a good album. I think I forgot to vote for Chic which is a damn shame. Chic were definitely more than "Le Freak" as evident in "Good Times" and "A Warm Summer Night". Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, induct Chic next time around!

Yeah, Chic are almost certainly not in the top 500. There are too many artists with guaranteed spots for that to happen.

It is a very long and extensive list. David Bowie, Madonna and Diana Ross to name a few.

Does anyone know when the next batch will be revealed? I am so anxious. I have been working outside and have my laptop in the garage periodically checking on breaks.

Happy to see some acknowledgement of the newcomers and their potential participation beyond this poll. Welcome, everyone! It's understandable that there would be some trepidation posting on a site like this given how prone to snobbery music fandom can be. Nonetheless, I can assure you that this forum is the best I have found in this respect, and a few bumps here and there (maybe it does have something to do with the artist poll) doesn't change that. There are several people here with tastes that are quite different to mine with whom I have enjoyed a great discourse, even friendship, over the years. Take for instance nicolas and his stated aversion for a lot of synthesizers despite my absolute fervor for them. It hasn't stopped him from being one of the kindest people to me. I listen to Bruce Springsteen (an artist I don't really care for) with particular attention because of nicolas' affection for him, and I would not have done so if not for this site. Henry is another one worth quite different taste to me, yet he has always been kind.

I hope nobody is getting offended by my posting personal ratings that in some cases are not too kind to some of the new blood to the top 100, but I vociferously defend the right for anyone to love whatever music they love - that is what brings us all together and what makes this forum so great. I would not have discovered a lot of music I love if not for this site.

As for Chic, I think it's worth mentioning that Jimmy has stated that he will fix up errors within the 101-500 part of the list: they may very well fall there. I know that the artist in my avatar, for instance, should feature in the top 500 somewhere yet I didn't see her name. I voted for Chic, though not high within my top 100.

Sorry to hear that, Jimmy. Please take care of yourself, and don't worry about unveiling the poll until you are in a position to enjoy it. You deserve the enjoyment of it over anyone else, after all of your work putting it together and seeking out so many voters.

Regarding Coldplay, I think it's strange that I prefer the newer stuff (Viva La Vida onward). Maybe it's cos my dad kept playing the older stuff till I started to hate Chris Martin's voice, but it has kinda grown on me now.

Take your time, JimmyJazz. Our personal lives should always come first, and I just hope everything that's going on in your life right now works out well.

And, Neil, regarding a previous post, it's funny but I wasn't even thinking of you as a "newcomer", since you've been participating for a while now and (hopefully!) are here to stay. I was just hoping that those whose very first post was the artist poll will all continue to participate, as well.

Finally, when I said I didn't feel the comments were out of line, I'm probably just comparing it to other forums. People have mentioned Bruce from time to time, who certainly came here with a brash attitude and had absolutely no interest in exploring music beyond a certain era (with the exception of one rather trollish thread he started where he was "reviewing" the albums unfamiliar to him in the AM Top 100 - needless to say, it didn't end well). Knowing he was from Digital Dream Door, my curiosity got the better of me and I spent a little time just scanning through some of the forum threads over there to try to get a better understanding of why he thought his attitude was acceptable. I was shocked at what I saw over there, with the blatant name-calling and F-you's, and the administrator appeared to just let Bruce and a few others do or say whatever they wanted. It made me even more appreciative of the generally friendly atmosphere in his forum, and it's the only one I've ever participated in. (It is worth noting that there are a few people on AM who also participate in DDD, and they're just as polite and respectful over there as they are here. It just goes to show that attitude is up to the individual, but I definitely feel a tone in a forum - positive or negative - can have a great effect on behavior in general.)

So, I'm sitting here listening to the old IPod Classic...and Donovan is up in rotation.."Wear Your Love Like Heaven". I don't recall seeing Donovan in the top 500 but I can hardly see...ha ha. I believe he deserves a place. Any thoughts?

Coldplay ranks high on my list because I had "The Scientist" and "Death and all of his Friends" on repeat for a long time. I hate "Clocks". I can definitely relate to those spine tingles Andy was talking about earlier. And yes, Beyonce and Missy stole the show at the SuperBowl. I also think that Yellow and Fix You are very good.

JimmyJazz, you have done an amazing job with the roll-out I hope everything is OK. I look forward to tomorrow!!

"Wear Your Love Like Heaven" made my list for the last song poll, and is my favorite from Donovan. I also love his "Sunshine Superman" album. He probably would make my personal Top 500.

As for Coldplay, I'm not a big fan, but I'm with PlasticRam on this one, because the album I liked most of theirs actually was "Viva La Vida..." (especially "Violet Hill," which is still my favorite song of theirs.)

Indeed it is! The avatar is from the single artwork to "Anthonio", which is likewise incredible.

I wonder if anyone else voted for Annie in their list. I fear not, but I can hope!

I am sorry. I did not vote for Annie. I did discover a couple of songs by this artist back when the it was only the Top 3000, before being expanded to 6k and soon to be 10k from what I have read. I did fall in love with that song and "Chewing Gum" but I did not explore it any further. I will have to make a concerted effort to check it out. :D

Hello moonbeam, I'm happy to see you here more often, I miss you with your "different love" in music.

And you know, you can always found recommandations for French music here. ;)
Contrary to Gainsbourg or Brassens whose entire albums and songs are good or excellent, Brel, for me, make some of the greatest french songs ever but a lot of not so good songs, so, it's rare, but for Brel, I prefer to recommand you a Best Of, this one for example is perfect https://www.discogs.com/fr/Brel-Quinze- ... ter/140630

And I can give you my personnal favorites (as always, with the "chansons", the words are most important than the music.)
So, the first three you have already listened :
Amsterdam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2kkr0e_dTQ
Vesoul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guaEg2U89p8 song that imposed in common langage in France the expression "Chauffe Marcel"

That was very well written. I can feel your passion for this artist and music in general. It sounds like I need to listen to the entire album "Anniemal". That is so sad about the BF at age 23...so tragic. That heartbreak definitely comes through as well as happiness. Thank you for sharing this with me. The fact that artists from the disco era are doing well shouldn't be so surprising. There has been an anti-disco movement ca. 1980 that wasn't fair to these artists, but that didn't stop them from having a substantial following. Bee Gees, ABBA, The Jacksons and Donna Summer are all in the top 200. Notice that all of these aren't limited to just disco. They were influenced by it, but also had hits in other decades or great ballads.

By Annie, or in general?

By Annie, I liked her recent EP Endless Vacation, but the last song of hers I really, really loved was "Mixed Emotions".

In general, it's a bit hard to say - I feel like I have lost touch with contemporary music a bit due to not having as much time. My son just turned 3, so the big "hits" of the past few years have been kids songs, though he does like a few songs that mom and dad quite like. :)

I really got into Mylene Farmer when I was in France in October. Her marriage of synths, strings, and poetic drama really appealed to me, particularly on tracks like "Sans contrefaçon", "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces", and "Sans logique". I also got into a lot of the singles by Girls Aloud, enough to convince me that they are easily my favorite girl group of all time. But since April 21st, all I've been able to do is immerse myself in Prince.

It's nice to see that this is still the friendliest music forum out there. If I had to make a list of "greatest artists" it probably won't look much different from my list of "favourite artists" that I submitted for this poll (although I would likely include more experimental artists on the greatest list, as I feel I don't value experimental music as much as I want to). But I know that for many people there's a significant difference between "favourite" and "greatest", and I'm really pleased that people were so honest about what artists they really liked the most when they submitted their lists. It made me realize that I should be more honest (and unafraid) about enjoying certain artists, songs and albums that most music aficionados will find uncool. As a friend of mine on this forum once said, there should be no such thing as guilty pleasures in music, only pleasures.

jamieW wrote:A few more of my personal favorites are "Les bergers," "Fernand," and "Le moribond." It really helps to watch his live performances on YouTube, since he was one of the most electric performers I've ever seen. He's definitely one of those artists who absolutely commanded attention and the more I've watched/listened to him, the more my appreciation has grown.
Nice to read you again, Moonbeam. As I've said many times before on the forum, I love Brel. I'm not sure you'll have quite the same affection for his music, Moonbeam, but I might be wrong. Romain and jamieW mention most of my very favourite songs of his, except maybe Marieke.

Below is something I posted in our last all-time albums poll about Brel's album Ces gens-là. It explains what I love about his music. Honorio elaborated on the things I wrote, which I will also post below...
Dan wrote:
nicolas wrote:Henry, two of the greatest fans of that album, Henrik and Dan, don't speak French, and I'm also surprised that they had this album so high considering the importance of Brel's lyrics (espacially in the title song, the lyrics are a great moment of poetry). But this is probably the most cohesive Brel album musically speaking. The production is amazing. I personnally prefer Brel's last album from 1977 ("Brel" or "Les Marquises"), because of the power of its lyrics (Brel was about to die from lung cacer and knew it). But I know that if you don't speak French you miss a lot of that album and I understand that non francophone people prefer "Ces gens-là".
Yes, most Brel fans who speak French say that the best thing about his songs are the lyrics. They talk of Jacques Brel the poet, with his interesting characters and their fascinating stories. I have read translated lyrics of many of his songs. The problem is, I have found that different translations of the same song can vary in quality and impact. And of course, some of the meaning just gets lost in translation. Nevertheless, it’s still easy to get an impression of what a good storyteller he was when you read the translated lyrics.

Then there are people who say that the best way to appreciate Brel is to look at video clips of his live performances, as he was an intensely physical and charismatic performer. There’s plenty of truth in that, and I have spent many pleasant hours looking at clips of his live performances on YouTube.

But as I don’t speak French, and as I don’t watch any videos when I listen to this album, it’s obviously the music that does it for me. The title track ("Ces gens-là") is a chanson classic, but it’s the more lively orchestration and production of other songs that make me love this album as much as I do (especially "La chanson de Jacky", which to me is the best example of a song where intricate, theatrical orchestration matches the passion and exuberance of Brel’s vocal delivery). But it’s not all about big, spirited orchestration – there are also slower, beautiful songs with a lot of emotional weight, like “Les Désespérés”, even if you don’t understand what he’s singing about.

It’s not always easy to explain what you like about an album when what it actually comes down to in the end is the way it makes you feel. Every month I seem to enjoy it more and more to listen to good music that is not sung in English. More often than not, I listen to non-anglophone music that falls outside the realm of rock and pop. This is not because I think that non-anglophone rock bands or pop acts are worse than their anglophone counterparts; it’s just that I’m more interested in styles and sounds that are unique to a specific country. To me, a lot of chanson (both from France and from other francophone countries) sounds quite a bit different to the anglophone music I grew up with. And every time I listen to this album (I usually listen to the original 25-minute, 6-track release from 1965), I love its francophone “otherness” as well as its theatrical yet emotionally intimate charm. It’s the non-anglophone album that excites me the most, and it is currently my second favourite album of all time. That’s just the way it is for me.
Honorio wrote:First of all, this is not my favourite Brel album (it's "Olympia 64"), in fact the album only grabbed my attention after a Henrik's suggestion. And secondly I'm going to follow the structure of the argumentation from the excellent review posted by Dan.
a) Brel the poet: yes, Dan, Brel was a fantastic lyricist. The way he turns the story upside down at the end of some songs is masterful, sometimes in the last verse. We know at the end that the narrator of the dysfunctional family of "Ces gens-là" is also part of this family, we know that both the narrator and "Jef" are beggars only in the last verse, we know in the end that the real infidelity is not committed by the grandfather but by the grandmother on "Grand-mère" and, tying life and death, that in the end the real meaning of the word "barrack" is "coffin" in the last word of "L'âge idiot." And the lyrics themes covers (as always in his case) a lot of ground, there is of course the vivid dissector of social costumes and groups (family in "Ces gens-là," army in "L'âge idiot," high society in "Grand-mère" and even the life of shepperds in "Les bergers") but Brel also talks about life (the nostalgia of childhood in "La chanson de Jacky," the sudden fall and decline in "Jef" and the slow fall and decadence in "L'âge idiot"), death (one of his favourites subjects, represented here by the superb recreation of his own death "Le tango funèbre" and the lonely funeral of a friend in "Fernand") and of course love ("Mathilde" but also the belle comme un soleil Frida amidst the monsters parade of "Ces gens-là"). The tone of the lyrics, closely tied to the music, goes from the euphoric "Mathilde" to the melodramatic "Fernand," from the cynical "Tango funèbre" to the sympathetic "Jef," from the solemn "L'âge idiot" to the humble "Les bergers," from the weird "Ces gens-là" to the compassionate "Les désespérés."
b) Brel the performer: yes, Dan, in my opinion the natural state of Jacques Brel was the stage. No more about this subject, just see Ces gens-là or La chanson de Jacky.
c) Brel the musician: but yes, Dan, I agree with you wholeheartedly that the music itself is more than enough to appreciate Jacques Brel. It's also true that too often the easy-listening arrangements on many Brel songs deadweight them in the eyes (and ears) of a pop or rock aficionado. But, apart of the brilliant melodies created by Brel (sometimes teaming with Gérard Jouannest), the arrangements were truly remarkable throughout this particular album. To name a few: the combination of xylophone and accordion raising spirits during the chorus in "Jef" after the gloomy strings of the verses, the playful percussion (playing on the rim snare) on the "être une heure" part of "La chanson de Jacky," the pastoral piccolo melodies on "Les bergers," the incredibly sad melody on the accordion at 3'01" on "Fernand" (I remember Henrik pointing out at this melody while listening to the song at nicolas' house three years ago), the jubilous trumpets on "Mathilde," the waltz-time piano on "Les désespérés" and many more. But the crowning achievement of the album in this matter is undoubtedly the arrangements of "Ces gens-là." The first two minutes features a minimalist arrangement of only piano and double bass repeating two slightly dissonant notes. At 1'59" an accordion enters playing a distant melody, substituted at 2'25" by the strings at a high register. And then, preceeded by some flute trills it come the explosion. At 2'55", when the singer mention Frida qui est belle comme un soleil (who is beautiful as the sun) all the orchestra enters, blinding us with a light brighter that the sun. But the reality prevails (parce que les autres veulent pas, because the others don't want to), the horns shut up and the strings change the previous jubilous melody for an eerie melody from 3:43 that tinges the scene with a sense of unreality. This push of joy is finally completely lost at the end of the song. And during the whole song the double bass played the same two notes. Absolutely brilliant.
...will keep us together.

I'm sorry your happiness was short loved. These are great artists. I have had "Delias Gone" on repeat for the last three days. Thanks to AM, I discovered it and I think it may wind up in my top 3 Johnny Cash songs. I love this track. The lyrics are so raw, simple and powerful. I love when I discover a song that has been around for eons!! It makes me sad too, because it could have so many more spins by now.

Yeah for Elton!! Always been a big, big fan!! I always thought he should be the King of Pop but he always had a way to Rock as well which, may have distracted from the "King of Pop" moniker. He and Bernie were very prolific for a very, very long time. Quite a feat!! Love you Elton!!

No, not Crocodile Rock!! ha ha One of my least favorite songs by Elton!! Surprisingly enough, my favorite song was one discovered while I was in Hyderabad, India. Of all places. It hardly received any airplay here in the US. Well, not that surprising since most stations are geared towards the latest and greatest.
