The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
Just a quick heads up. Tomorrow, I am aiming to get through 70-51. On Saturday, I will present acts 50-26. This will bring us to the Top 25 of which I will unveil 25-11 on Sunday, and finally for Monday to start the new week, I will wrap up with the Top 10. Sound fine as far as schedules go?

Can we have it finished by Sunday? (If you don't want to, that's fine, but I think my work performance's been affected by the constant refreshing...)JimmyJazz wrote:Just a quick heads up. Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
I know the band's debut (the only thing I know). Heard it a few times. At first, I thought they sounded a bit pretentious, but with this perspective of a "classical-rock" band that JimmyJazz presented, I'm starting to get their sound. Indeed, now "21st Century Schizoid Man" is definitely a song I really like.Jackson wrote:Yeah, that's what I meant. From your answer above, it looks like you're new to the band. Try In the Court of the Crimson King and specifically album opener "21st Century Schizoid Man" as a gateway, it's a little more accessible than "Starless."prosecutorgodot wrote:I'm confused about your question. Do you mean "Why would it be unexpected...?"Jackson wrote:
I don't understand this comment. Why wouldn't it be unexpected for Green Day to outrank King Crimson?

Pearl Jam, too. I'd be very surprised if they dropped from the Top 500 entirely.Henry wrote:Coldplay was rated at 173 in the last poll (down from 77 in the 2010 poll) and the Bee Gees were rated at 180. Coldplay could bounce back as I have observed that there is a yo-yo up and down movement over three polls for some artists.Sweepstakes Ron wrote:So... Coldplay and Bee Gees are top 70 then? This is getting intense...
However, there is a decent chance that one or both of these artists have dropped out of the top 500, rather than moved up to the top 70.
We should know the answer pretty soon.
But this list has been so full of surprises already, anything else would just be a bonus at this point.

Seeing as other 90s alt rockers like Green Day, RHCP, and Smashing Pumpkins made some great gains this year, I expect Pearl Jam to place in the top 70.whuntva wrote:Pearl Jam, too. Maybe I will wrap the whole Top 25 on Sunday actually, makes more sense, then starting off the next week I can present alternative lists and data...babydoll wrote:Can we have it finished by Sunday? Some of these are really goofy, but I love the rise of Blink and Lana (even though most people probably think Blink is one of the goofy ones). Grimes and Beyonce deserved the bump with their recent releases. And wow, '50s artists really took a hit.

Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
I've got nothing to say about the last batch of artists who all deserve their placement, and I'm totally unable to "rate" an artist so I won't even try. In fact, the new terrorist attack in France has shattered all the enthusiasm I had in this and pretty much everything else on a short term basis, so I believe I'm not going to intervene on this forum anymore for a little while.
Amazing work JimmyJazz, keep it up. I'll be following it through.

I share with you Pierre, Romain and other French forumers this tremendous loss and stand by you at these difficult moments and I would like to express my deepest condolences. Why can't we all express ourselves, despite our differences, without fear of retribution and violence or without resorting to the same?Pierre wrote:I've got nothing to say about the last batch of artists who all deserve their placement, and I'm totally unable to "rate" an artist so I won't even try. Frank Sinatra did incredibly well. Congrats, Ol' Blue Eyes! And, I'm so sorry for your drama, JimmyJazz. Seems there's too much drama going all around today!
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
I offer my condolences as well. It's a really sad state of the world when I wake up every morning, turn on my computer, and just hope I won't be horrified. Unfortunately, like more and more mornings, today was one of those awful days. Sonofsamiam already expressed why I love music and feel very fortunate to share this love with the great people who participate on this site.
I forgot all about that one. Indeed, it's easily my favorite thing he's ever done. If only he'd paired with The Lonely Island a few decades earlier (regardless of how young they were at the time)...Nick wrote:Jack Sparrow?jamieW wrote:Of all the songs I've heard from him, I've found only one tolerable.
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
Let me add to the sadness of others over the recent events in France and the rest of the world. I keep feeling like the world is getting worse over the past 5 years or so, but then I wonder if that is just me getting old. But this trend toward isolationism, extremism and bigotry is incredibly disheartening.

Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
It feels like the world's been living in this perpetual state of mourning the past couple years. Just last year we had the Charlie Hebdo and Paris attacks in France alone. And this year we've had a major attack in Brussels, as well as mass shootings stateside in Orlando and Dallas. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting too. So sad that it should even be the case that I'm forgetting, but there's too much to remember. It's another candlelight vigil every week.
Anyway...
With Public Enemy placing at number 68, Kendrick Lamar enters the top 3 hip-hop artists in this poll. Pretty remarkable for a guy whose first studio album came out in 2011.

Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
How the hell are the Bee Gees (who I like, though I'm not a dire hard fan or anything) beating out all of these critical darlings? Are all our newcomers super fans of the Brothers Gibb or what?
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
I have no idea why, on this forum or anywhere else, Coldplay stand out as an artist deserving any sort of acclaim. They are much closer to Imagine Dragons/Mumford and Sons territory (eg. 'inspirational' sort-of-indie bands that appeal to mainstream college students) in my book than one of the greatest artists of their generation, as we just ranked them.

Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
Coldplay stand out among acclaimed artists that I "hate". I put "hate" in quotations because I rarely feel any actual hostility towards their music, but since there is a noticeably large disparity between how much I like them and how much many other people like them, and they are fairly present in pop culture, I feel the need to express my dislike for them, even if I exaggerate my expressions compared to how I actually feel.Jackson wrote:I have no idea why, on this forum or anywhere else, Coldplay stand out as an artist deserving any sort of acclaim. I have similar alarm. ABBA were at least as great as the bee gees, but the brothers are scoring 20-30 points higherNick wrote:How the hell are the Bee Gees (who I like, though I'm not a dire hard fan or anything) beating out all of these critical darlings? Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
I'm glad to see Sinatra climb so high. On the more "controversial" selections, while I used to hate Coldplay they have grown on me a little. Still shouldn't be AS high as they are though.
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
Agree completely-- I don't think their songs are bad, they just don't seem like a group that should be remembered for lists like this. Remember the national 'meh' after they were chosen as the halftime act for the Super Bowl?Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Coldplay stand out among acclaimed artists that I "hate". I'm a bit perplexed by the response to the Bee Gees. They are a well celebrated band with a soundtrack that defined a very popular genre. I didn't include them in my list, but they would likely make my top 500.
Even outside of Saturday Night Fever, they have some great songs.
65. Oasis: 0
64. New Order: 10

60. Daft Punk: 7

But are they the 57th greatest artist of all time?Moonbeam wrote:I'm a bit perplexed by the response to the Bee Gees. They are a well celebrated band with a soundtrack that defined a very popular genre. I didn't include them in my list, but they would likely make my top 500.
Even outside of Saturday Night Fever, they have some great songs.

Greatest? I'd say yes.babydoll wrote:But are they the 57th greatest artist of all time?Moonbeam wrote:I'm a bit perplexed by the response to the Bee Gees. Maybe? I don't know. I don't think I'm qualified to rank greatness. Bear in mind The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones would be far outside my top 1000 despite their guaranteed place in the top 10 here: I don't think I believe in objective greatness.babydoll wrote:But are they the 57th greatest artist of all time?Moonbeam wrote:I'm a bit perplexed by the response to the Bee Gees. Nonetheless, the Bee Gees had a massive cultural impact that is still celebrated today. They have stood the test of time in the public's mind. It's not surprising to me that they have fared well.
By the way, I'm searching for the updated Album Ranker for you. It wasn't on the USB I thought and I was overseas. I think it's backed up on my external hard drive, so I'll look soon!

Well, I guess I would like "Stayin' Alive" and "How Deep Is Your Love" (I still rather like those songs) if they weren't overplayed to death... But their position are just flat out surprisingly high!Moonbeam wrote:Maybe? I don't know. I don't think I'm qualified to rank greatness. It is surprising I suppose in light of their placements in previous polls, but I honestly think I'm more surprised that they aren't more celebrated in the first place by critics.babydoll wrote:Well, I guess I would like "Stayin' Alive" and "How Deep Is Your Love" (I still rather like those songs) if they weren't overplayed to death... Those songs you mentioned are good, but I care more for "Night Fever", "You Should Be Dancing" and "Night Fever". Some of their pre-disco stuff like "Nights of Broadway" is also nice.

In my opinion: Greateness are acclaim, popularity, influence and impact cultural.
Bee Gees score very good in popularity and impact cultural, at least. Decent acclaim and influence.

I would also like to remind everyone that we were not voting for the greatest artists of all time. Our list were supposed to reflect those that inspire each one of us personally(our favorites). I am sure the list would be much different if each of were asked to rank the greatest artists of all time. The rules definitely stated not to vote for who you think is the greatest artist of all time. Obviously, there are some people who have participated that feel very strongly about the Bee Gees.
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
I would happily take the Gibb brothers at #57 if I could jettison GnR entirely. BTW there was more to the Bee Gees than their disco era pre-eminence. I suspect that my wife would rank then #2 (behind Leonard Cohen).
Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
To quote my Aunt, she says the Bee Gees "they sound like singing bugs". They are personally in my top 100 at #66. I love disco! What can I say. You can definitely move your body to it and it can get a party started. The list is just a matter of personal tastes which everybody may or may not agree with. It is what it is.

I'm not at all upset about the Bee Gees' placement, just incredibly surprised.

That chest hair comment tho...
As long as Kaue and profeta listened thoroughly to the Bee Gees' discography, I'm satisfied.

This is just my reaction. I don't dislike Bee Gees, it's just the shock!Sweepstakes Ron wrote:I'm not at all upset about the Bee Gees' placement, just incredibly surprised.

So that pretty much clears up all "outsiders" to a top 100, except one...
Time for a tally! Kendrick Lamar --- in top 50?
I'll say yes.

Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!
Clocks, Yellow, and The Scientist are gorgeous songs that I will defend as long as I live. I have great respect for this forum's intellectual approach to music, but another undervalued aspect of music is the physical and emotional reactions it can create. In the right setting, Coldplay's best songs send shivers down my spine and make my hair stand on end - I find the melodies and harmonies that beautiful. I study music very seriously, and I have learned to appreciate the merits of many artists that initially had no effect on me. But in listing favorites, as were the instructions for this poll, these instinctive reactions get a boost over a rigorous analysis of an artist's impact, and if a song makes me feel that way, I don't care that its lyrics didn't inspire a revolution or that it didn't spearhead the formation of a new genre or musical technique. My natural response to its musical quality is much more important to me than that. I'm sure most newcomers were more likely to vote this way too, especially because most of them(/us) were probably blissfully unaware that these moderately acclaimed superstar acts would generate such negative reactions on the forum, since the general public would certainly not be outraged to see Coldplay ahead some of the more obscure critical darlings.
That said, Coldplay did not master many different styles, and the band's shift into cheesy arena dance pop, or whatever you want to call their recent style, keeps them out of my top 10. But the incredible power of some of their early songs is enough to warrant their place on this list in my opinion. I feel similarly about Oasis and the standout tracks from their first two albums, especially the classics from Morning Glory.
