Classics of the 80s at RYM

Post by Moonbeam »

Sorry to spam these boards, but as a lot of people here are active at RYM, I thought I'd share a project that I've started there. Basically, I'm trying to come up with an exhaustive list of 80s classics based on how well-known the songs are.

Feel free to take a look at the first poll or nominate a song if you're interested!

Here is a Spotify playlist of all available songs that have managed at least Moderate Classic status.

Cool idea, Moonbeam! I think my view on the classics is a bit AM-biased though, as I'm working with the critics lists almost every day and only occasionally listen to the radio.

No problem! I hardly listen to radio either, but there are some songs you just can't avoid in supermarkets, sporting events, in TV shows, movies, ads, etc. My thinking is that if a 10-year-old is likely to know an 80s song, it must be an 80s classic!

Journey's Don't Stop Believing should definitely be on the list, as much as that hurts.

I don't look at the RYM boards too often so when you post another poll could you link to it here?

Here's how I voted

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean- Ultimate
Rob Base & D.J. E-Z Rock - It Takes Two- Not
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House- Ultimate
The Clash - Rock the Casbah- Ultimate
R.E.M. - It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)- Ultimate
ABBA - The Winner Takes It All- Not
Blondie - Call Me- Classic

This is very subjective based on how and where you hear music but this is going to be my criteria:

Ultimate: Heard in a variety of places and is acclaimed as a classic.
Classic: Meets one of ultimate's criteria.
Moderate: Somewhat meets one of ultimate criteria but not quite a classic.
Not: Meets neither criteria.

The Winner Takes It All is a song I enjoy and listen to, but I only hear it when I play it so it's not a classic even though I'd listen to it a ton more than It Takes Two.

Thanks for your input, John! As you say, the definition of "classic" is entirely subjective. What I'm after here is not a measure of how acclaimed a song is at all or how well-liked it is. Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" is probably at least Classic by this metric even if it has no acclaim, and so is "You Shook Me All Night Long" even though I hate it.

Here have been my votes:

Eurythmics - "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)": Ultimate
Madonna - "Material Girl": Classic
George Clinton - "Atomic Dog": Classic (at least in Detroit!)
Depeche Mode - "Just Can't Get Enough": Ultimate
Prince - "When Doves Cry": Ultimate
Michael Jackson - "Billie Jean": Ultimate
Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock - "It Takes Two": Classic
Talking Heads - "Burning Down the House": Classic
The Clash - "Rock the Casbah": Classic
R.E.M. - "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)": Moderate
ABBA - "The Winner Takes It All": Not
Blondie - "Call Me": Classic

As for bumping this, I don't want to continually spam this forum if nobody else is interested, so I might send you a PM here if you're the only one participating.

5 years ago I think I would have said Sweet Dreams was ultimate but I don't hear it much anymore. The next two I never hear. Maybe on 80's retrospect tv shows, but I'm really surprised by your votes there... and REM's song comes up all the time just because there's always some world's going to end theory or some reason to play it. Other than Billie Jean, I'd say that was my easiest choice for ultimate. But, like I said it really depends on where you hear music outside of your personal collection. For me, it would be shopping and tv, two places that tend to play alternative and soft rock, definitely not party music. For another person, they might go out dancing a lot or have kids in dance or sports that are far more likely to hear a song like It Takes Two.

A new poll is up for "Once in a Lifetime". Is anybody else participating?

I agree, John, that a lot of it depends on the type of public places where these songs are played. Your assessment of "Sweet Dreams" matches mine of "It's the End of the World As We Know It" - I used to hear it a lot but not much anymore.

OK, I'll bump this thread then. :)

I wish I lived somewhere where "The Winner Takes It All" was a classic - this poll introduced me to this song!

New poll is up for The Smiths. I'm having a hard time believing that "Once in a Lifetime" is potentially an Ultimate Classic as its votes currently suggest.

While I don't have time to get over there, here's a few that come to mind. My apologies if these have already been mentioned. Most of these are played on any "80s at 8" type program locally. Please note: Since you mentioned "based on how popular" this is not an aesthetic endorsement of the songs...just stating I believe these to be emblematic of the era for a large number of folks.

Eddy Grant "Electric Avenue"
Rick Springfield "Jessie's Girl"
Hall and Oates "Private Eyes" (actually any number of Hall and Oates songs could be here...they are the most charted 80s act...at least for the U.S. "Hot 100" Billboard charts)
Toni Basic "Mickey"
Tiffany "I Think We're Alone Now"
AC/DC "You Shook Me All Night Long"
Wang Chung "Everybody Have Fun Tonight"
Men Without Hats "The Safety Dance"
Rockwell "Somebody's Watching Me"
A Flock of Seagulls "I Ran (So Far Away)"

I'm sure I could come up with more if I tried longer...

I've never even heard the first 3 so I'm going not a classic on those :) , Graceland is a deep track at best so not a classic there as well. I debated between moderate classic and classic for U2, but I ended up going moderate. I bet it's probably played on classic rock radio a bit, but I haven't heard it in years. However, since it's U2, who seems to be the band from the 80's everybody has heard and the song is off an album that everybody seems to own, classic wouldn't be a bad choice either.

My votes on recent polls:

Talking Heads - "Once in a Lifetime": Moderate Classic - I'm shocked this is on precipice of Ultimate Classic status!
The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now?": Moderate Classic - I could have gone for Classic, though.
Fleetwood Mac - "Gypsy": Classic - I still hear this one sometimes. Fleetwood Mac surely has a lot of 80s classics for a band that was so big in the 70s!
Dream Academy - "Life in a Northern Town": Moderate Classic - I didn't think I knew the song until the chorus came, which I hear fairly often. I settled for Moderate Classic.
Cutting Crew - "I've Been in Love Before": Not a Classic - I had never heard this.
Paul Simon - "Graceland": Not a Classic - I'd only heard this about 3 times total.
U2 - "Where the Streets Have No Name": Classic - Not quite as popular anymore as a few others by them.

17. Cutting Crew - I've Been in Love Before: No classic
18. Paul Simon - Graceland: No classic - It's a good song but I don't think I have ever heard it on the radio (unlike "You Can Call Me Al"...) and it has no hit feeling. I am very surprised about its high position at AM.
19. U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name: Classic

I'm pretty amazed at the response! I was hoping to get 50 votes for the more popular songs, max!

As maligned as 80s music has been in some circles, it just has a certain sense of fun and magic that gets a lot of people excited, I guess!

Absolutely everywhere! Radio, video channels, shopping malls...

I hear it just about everywhere, and certainly more than any other Wham! or George Michael song.

My recent votes:

Bruce Springsteen - "Born in the U.S.A.": Classic - It was an Ultimate Classic but I hardly hear it here in Oz.
Prince - "1999": Ultimate Classic - I might hear this more than any other Prince song these days, strangely enough!
Wham!/George Michael - "Careless Whisper": Ultimate Classic - The GM song I hear more than any other, without doubt.
The Human League - "Don't You Want Me": Ultimate Classic - Probably the most played song of all of synth pop.
Simple Minds - "Don't You (Forget About Me)": Ultimate Classic - It's still played a ton.
The Smiths - "What Difference Does It Make?": Not a Classic - I don't think I've ever heard it except for when I put it on, sadly.
Thomas Dolby - "She Blinded Me With Science": Moderate Classic - Wish I heard it more.
Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger": Ultimate Classic - It's pretty unavoidable!
Bonnie Tyler - "Total Eclipse of the Heart": Classic - Used to be an Ultimate but its airply has waned a little.
Modern English - "I Melt With You": Classic - Ultimate in the States, Moderate at best in Oz.
Eurythmics - "There Must Be an Angel (Playing With My Heart)": Classic - Ultimate in Oz, Moderate at best in the U.S.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - "The Message": Ultimate Classic - It's been used in a few commercials here and I hear a lot of snippets everywhere.
Rick Springfield - "Jessie's Girl": Classic - I struggled between this and Moderate but went with the former.
Journey - "Don't Stop Believin'": Ultimate Classic - This is probably more popular now than it ever was in the 80s.
John Cougar Mellencamp - "Jack & Diane": Classic - I don't care for it, but I still hear it sometimes, and certainly more than any other song of his.
Michael Jackson - "Beat It": Ultimate Classic - It's been Ultimate since I blasted it around the neighborhood as a kid until now!
Foreigner - "I Want to Know What Love Is": Classic - I heard it a lot more about 10-15 years ago.
Toto - "Africa": Ultimate Classic - I love it and get excited every time I hear it, which is still quite often.
The Outfield - "Your Love": Moderate Classic - I never heard this in the U.S., which is strange considering how big it was there. I've heard it a bit here in Oz, though.
Robert Tepper - "No Easy Way Out": Not a Classic - I don't think I'd ever heard this before!
Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)": Moderate Classic - I used to hear this a lot but hardly at all anymore.
Alabama - "Love in the First Degree": Not a Classic - I don't think I had heard this.
Benny Mardones - "Into the Night": Moderate Classic - The chorus is quite familiar, but I don't hear it all that often. Apparently, it's one of the 25 most played songs in American radio history, though!
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax": Classic - So close to being Ultimate, but I hear "Don't You Want Me", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Tainted Love" markedly more for synth pop songs.
Tina Turner - "What's Love Got to Do With It": Classic - Another that is close to Ultimate, but not quite.
Marvin Gaye - "Sexual Healing": Classic - Unfortunately, I still hear this skeezy song sometimes.
Rick Astley - "Never Gonna Give You Up": Ultimate Classic - It's Ultimate for all the wrong reasons, but there's no denying how well-known this is.

In regards to "Never Gonna Give You Up"-

"Yes, "I still hear this song often without prior intent", especially when I click on random links on the internet."

Couldn't have said it better myself. Nevertheless, it is an ultimate classic, despite my feelings about the song itself.

One thing that I find peculiar is the performance of metal and prog songs at RYM. It strikes me as absurd that "Run to the Hills" is outperforming "Material Girl", for example, and "Tom Sawyer" is outperforming "Into the Groove", "What's Love Got to Do With It", "Sexual Healing", "Relax", "1999", etc. I don't have anything against these genres (I nominated "Kickstart My Heart" and will vote a lot of pop metal songs as at least Classic), but some of the results seem off-base.

Is it just me, or are Iron Maiden and Rush somehow way more played and well-known among the public at large than I thought? I'd appreciate any feedback/votes. I know those genres are highly celebrated at RYM and am wondering if some participants are voting based on how well they like the songs as opposed to how often they hear them without intent, which is the stated criteria.

I remember that I once listened to the "melody crossword" - which has a quite old audience - on the radio. In a letter, a young listener had complained that there was never any heavy metal in the show. The host decided to respond to that and played...Run to the Hills. There are separate radio channels for hard rock and metal but nevertheless I think most Swedes know Iron Maiden and would instantly recognize them (well, at least people in my age).
Rush are not classic in my book though.

Moonbeam, I think one of the reasons that is happening is because of classic rock radio. Based on your criteria for an "Ultimate Classic" (being heard often without prior intent), anybody who listens to rock radio for even an hour a day will hear "Tom Sawyer" at least weekly. At least where I live, there is no station that plays 80's hits (one radio station plays them here and there mixed in with newer stuff), so they aren't being heard as much, which apparently diminishes their value as "Classics".
I don't really think that hearing the song should hinder it's state as being a classic or not.

Thanks for the feedback, Henrik and Listyguy. I've built a statistical model for predicting how well these songs will do based on chart positions, RYM average and ratings, the latter 2 of which should already skew things in favor of the genres that RYM is big on (metal, classic rock, prog).

"Run to the Hills" has a modest high residual of 6.38 but "Tom Sawyer" is by far leading the pack at 20.88.

Prog and classic rock get a huge bump from Guitar Hero and Rock Band as well. I think it's more likely that a person aged 18-30 has heard a classic rock song like Tom Sawyer over the past 5 years than an old Madonna song.

Video games definitely will provide a bump to rock songs, but I don't think this bump would be nearly enough to overtake all of the other media outlets where Madonna would clearly be in the lead. I just don't think if you randomly polled 100 people off of the street that more would know "Tom Sawyer" than would know "Material Girl" or "Into the Groove".
