Beach House - Bloom
Ought - More Than Any Other Day
That second match is ridiculous. Ought has been one of my favorite recent discoveries, so I'm happy to see someone nominated it here. The Bones of What You Believe is also a classic to me.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 7 - Round 1.8
Beach House has an interesting album, but lacking in direction, and memorability. The other album is also intersting, but lacking in both style and execution. Still wins, though.
Tim Buckley - Lorca vs.
Easy choice.

Thanks Honorio. Good topic, our female counterparts deserve a huge applause for the music they give us. It feels very male-centric in this forum (in the sense that I am not sure there are any female contributors to the forum), but I may be wrong ?
Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 7 - Round 1.8
Beach Hous 75-68
Ought 72-58
Jimmy Cliff 83-67
No access to In A Bar Under The Sea so far but not that big on Blood Orange.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 7 - Round 1.8
Peter Gabriel (III)
Not a bad record from Beach House, but Peter is the clear winner.
In a Bar Under the Sea
I assume positive attention for dEUS since their strong performance in Unacclaimed. Though I wonder how Instant Street would have done.
Jimmy Cliff
One of the greats. Can't be touched.

I'm pretty glad at female representation, too. You almost never see them on critics' lists, which is a real shame.

2. Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe vs. Ought - More than Any Other Day
2 of my favorite albums of recent years (I actually think I nominated both).
The Bones of What You Believe is damn catchy and much varied than one would expect, but the first 4 songs of More Than Any Other Day make the best rock stretch of the decade so far imo ; it's witty, catchy and elegant. The rest is not as good but still pretty great.

Beach House - Bloom
What's odd about this one is I think nearly any other Peter Gabriel album would've beaten "Bloom," and Peter Gabriel III would've beaten any other Beach House album for me. I guess that's how it goes with random matchups...
Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe
dEUS - In a Bar, Under the Sea
Jimmy Cliff - Jimmy Cliff
(Also, thanks for the stunning photo gallery, Honorio! The one that struck me the most is Lisa Germano. She looks so vulnerable, which I can't help but both compare and contrast with the darkness of her album.)

Close call, really enjoyed both. Little Arithmetics is considered a classic in Belgium and dEUS is very popular among French and Belgian indie community, so it was time I listened to that album. Worst Case Scenario would have won my vote by the way !

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 7 - Round 1.8
Winners in red.
1. Beach House - Bloom vs. Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (III)
Beach House is very pretty but I never really understood the massive acclaim. If I'm going to listen to something like this, why not just listen to the Cocteau Twins? On the other side of the bracket, I'd never heard this Peter Gabriel album before (or anything outside So) but I loved it. Weird, challenging, yet strangely catchy.
2. Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe vs. Ought - More than Any Other Day
Speaking of catchy albums, the Chvrches are incapable of writing a song without a hook that will stay in your head for the rest of the day.
3. Blood Orange - Cupid Deluxe vs. dEUS - In a Bar, Under the Sea
I remember Cupid Deluxe getting high acclaim a few years ago, and this is embarrassing, but I avoided listening to it because the album artwork was so utterly dreadful. I'm sorry I waited so long; this album is awesome. dEUS was solid but wasn't nearly as striking to me.

Huh. This is a bit off topic but I never realized how much '70s Stevie Nicks looked like '90s Drew Barrymore.Honorio wrote:[imgsize 490x330]http://assets.rollingstone.com/assets/i ... 100726.jpg[/imgsize]

Thank you friends, for all the kind words!
I hope the board will appreciate the name we chose for our son: Bowie. A perhaps obvious but nonetheless respectful homage to one of the greatest artists of my lifetime. May our little guy grow up as free in spirit and as unabashed in his pursuit of happiness.
Meanwhile, here's my picks:
1. Beach House - Bloom vs. Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (III)
2. Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe vs. Ought - More than Any Other Day
3. Blood Orange - Cupid Deluxe vs. dEUS - In a Bar, Under the Sea
