andyd1010, miguel has "Mambo No. 5" in his 1950's list. RYM does have the release date as 1950, and since we traditionally go by RYM when there is any doubt, I'm including it in the '50's section. Could you please move this to your 1950's list? Thanks! (And please let me know if you have any questions).

Hi jamieW. Sorry for the mistake. I addressed it on October 21, removing it from my '40s list, shifting the rest of the songs up and adding This Land Is Your Land at #40. I chose not to edit my '50s list at the time since Mambo No. 5 wouldn't make my top 100 and I'm not sure if 101-150 will count, but I'll go ahead and update now. My final '50s list, with Mambo No. 5 at #135, and a couple other minor changes:

Thanks for the quick reply, andyd1010. I wouldn't even consider including "Mambo No. 5" in the 1900-49 portion a mistake, since (like so many of these songs) there seems to be some uncertainty regarding the release date. I just figured the best way to handle it would be to go by RYM, as that's what we've done in the past. (This is why I discussed the "adjustment period" in another post, since I figured situations like this would be inevitable as I finalized the spreadsheet.)

Edit: I just saw the exchange between you and Listyguy and what you meant when you said you'd already addressed this. (What's worse is that I now remember you had.) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I think my brain's just tied into a pretzel right now...

Just a note to everyone: I am finding a lot of "duplicate versions" for the 1900-1949 poll. In these instances, I'm just going to move everything behind the second-ranked version up a notch. The only time I'll alert the voter is if there are less than 100 songs on their list to give them an opportunity to add a song. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Dexter, I've noticed that "Mambo No. 5" is on your 1950's list, as well. (Please see my message to andyd1010 above.) Would it make your 1900-1949 list? (If so, feel free to add it; if not, I'll just keep your 1900 list as is, and move everything on your 1950s list up a notch. You can also add a #100 to your 1950s list, if you'd like.) Thanks!

- My new #100 for the 50's songs list is "Piel Canela" by Bobby Capó [1952/bolero/Puerto Rico]

My apologies, Dexter, you had it right all along. Basically, on the same page, I asked andyd1010 to move "Mambo" to the 1950s list, and then a few posts later asked you to move it to the 1900s list. (Anybody else other than me beginning to lose faith in the host of this thing?) :?

Oh, I didn't notice as I didn't read your message to Andy, sorry 'bout that. That's alright Jamie, I think you're doing an amazing job so far. From my experience with polls, the corrections/revisions usually happen after the results are shown. For you to take time to do it while preparing the spreadsheet is commendable.

Thanks, Dexter! I am a perfectionist when it comes to these things (which is why it's taking me so long to complete the spreadsheet.)

Speaking of which, I will definitely be finished by Sunday. (It may be sooner, but it definitely won't be any later than that.) My two main issues remaining are making sure there are no duplicates under different titles (I especially worry about non-English versions of songs I may not recognize) and getting the release years as accurate as possible. Although I have been working on this during the evening, work/family obligations keep me pretty busy during the week. I'm close enough now, though, that another weekend will be more than enough time to finish. Thanks for your patience, everyone!

Also, luney6, do you still plan on specifying your albums list with the recording itself? I will still accept any corrections up until Saturday, so please let me know.

As a source of reference, you can try the SecondHandSongs website. they have a huge database on the history of a specific song (even non-English ones) such as the composer, if it was adapted from an earlier song, the original performer and a list of cover versions complete with release dates. It's from this site that I discovered that Sarah Vaughan covered the song "Misty" in the same year as Johnny Mathis' version. Her version was, for me, better than his so I promptly replaced his song with hers on my music library.

Thanks again, Dexter! I will definitely check this site out. (With some of these songs, I need all the reference sources I can get - although, the good news is most of the songs that are going to make the top 100 have relatively clear release dates.)

Brad, sorry about the late discovery, but RYM has this as 1949 and Dan has included it in his 1900-49 list. I can bump everything beneath it up a notch in your 1950s list, and if you can tell me where it would rank in your 1900-49 list, I can take care of it. Thanks!

jamieW and luney6, hope you don't mind but I did a quick research (Wikipedia, rateyourmusic, discogs and ArchivMusic) about the discographical releases of the classical works on luney6 list. In 4 cases I haven't found albums released before 1960 containing that classical work. On the cases with various discographical releases I selected (if available) the most acclaimed version according to Rateyourmusic, so here it is:

18. THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET "Fontessa" (1956)
19. PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA / PAUL KLETZKI "Jean Sibelius: Symphony no. 3 in C major" (1956)

28. LONDON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA / SIR ADRIAN BOULT "Ralph Vaughan Williams: A London Symphony" (1953)
30. JOHN FAHEY "John Fahey / Blind Joe Death" (1959)

The ones not released before 1960:
1. Suite For Variety Orchestra 1 - Dmitri Shostakovich: probably it was recorded before but the first recordingI found on Internet was made by Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly in 1990 or 1991, released in 1993 with other pieces in an album named "Shostakovich: Jazz Music: Jazz Suites 1 & 2 - Piano Concerto No. 1 - Tea For Two."
7. Nagasaki - Alfred Schnittke: according to Wikipedia "recorded by the Moscow Radio Symphony in 1959 and broadcast to Japan through Voice of Russia, but it wasn't printed and it didn't receive any subsequent performances. Nagasaki was finally given its public premiere in its original form in Cape Town on 23 November 2006, eight years after Schnittke's death." So probably the first discographical release was by Cape Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in 2006.
20. Midsummer Marriages - Michael Tippett: according to Wikipedia the 1955 premiere (by Covent Garden Chorus and Orchestra conducted by John Pritchard) was recorded but not released until 1997. The first release was in 1970 by Covent Garden Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis. Anyway, jamieW, since it was recorded in 1955 maybe you can include it, it' up to you.
29. Treemonisha - Scott Joplin: according to Wikipedia "the opera was never fully staged during his lifetime (…) the world premiere took place on January 27, 1972." It seems that the first recording and release was made in 1976.

Thanks so much, Honorio - awesome work! I will happily add this list to the spreadsheet. I really appreciate this (and I'm sure luney6 will, as well).

Everyone, I will have everything completed my sometime tomorrow and will send the spreadsheet along to DaveC for the presentation. (Dave, if you're too busy for the presentation, please let me know and I'll try to find someone else. I know you volunteered quite a while back, and it's hard to predict how busy life will be so many months ahead.)

Thanks Jamie, I'm ready to go. I expect it will take a few days to put it all together.

Sounds good, Dave! I'll send the spreadsheet to you sometime tomorrow. Please don't feel rushed with the presentation. (Heaven knows, I took plenty of time to complete my part - I was supposed to be done nearly a month ago!)

Honorio, since luney6 didn't specify a recording, I'm wondering if we should go with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York/Bruno Walter here, since that is the version bonnielaurel voted for and would give the symphony itself a better chance of making the final list. Do you think this would be a good idea?

Oh, thank you so much Honorio! I haven't had enough time to revise my list for the past few weeks, but now I'm glad that it'll still be included.

Also, jamiew, Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra recording for Symphony 5 is fine with me. Thanks a ton!

Thanks, luney6! That's what I will do then.
