Stones (Gorillaz are great, but not at the same level as The Stones)
Wilco (Tough choice, just comes down to who I would rather listen to)
Massive Attack (I have cooled on Beck over the past couple of years)
CCR (From '68-'71 these guys were a machine pumping out great album after great album)
Tribe (Like The Doors, but I gotta show some love for my all-time favorite hip-hop group)
White Stripes (Never liked Eagles, even if I did there is no way I could vote for them here.)
Aerosmith
Hendrix

1) Rolling Stones
2) Portishead...slightly...I like a few more of their tunes than Wilco's at this point. But I can't claim to be a very big fan of either one.
3) Beck...a walk away
4) Creedence Clearwater Revival at this point. I do like LCD but haven't spent enough time with their stuff yet to know if I like them "better" than CCR.
5) The Doors
6) WHITE STRIPES VS. EAGLES. Easily the toughest match for me...I like a lot of BOTH these acts material. In the end, I went with my "track for track" model...5 points for each song I like, a bonus 10 points for each album I like at least 50% of track-for-track and a bonus 10 points above that if I like at least 75% of the album's material.
Final points: White Stripes (80) vs. Eagles (155) Again, this could easily change as I spend more time with the White Stripes' stuff...but to be fair I haven't given a really solid listen to the last Eagles disc either.
7) Aerosmith. I've tried to "get" Bjork but outside of a cut or two, I just don't.
8) Jimi Hendrix...but I haven't really heard any Cave I dislike yet. Who knows how this same matchup would turn out a couple years down the road.

Lots of folks, including myself, just don't groove with Bjork's songs yet.Henrik wrote:This should be a friendly forum, so I'll keep my mouth shut.
Perhaps you can help some of us understand how her music won you over. Perhaps it was rather quickly after a single listening or two. On the other hand, perhaps after many listenings you caught on to something in her music that moved more after repeated listenings. Please let us know which of her songs you believe are the most accessible and which are her true masterpieces, and what makes those songs masterpieces.
Re: UMT 2012: Round of 128 #6
[*]Henry, I'm not sure Henrik said that just about Björk. (Portishead maybe ?)
i can speak for Björk. I'm not fond of electronic music, but this one is above genres. She's very original AND a great songwriter in the classical sense. Incredible voice, incredible athmospheres. She's got a world of her own, and as a bonus she's a beautiful girl in a very strange way.

Henry, this is a difficult question for me, since to my ears you can't go wrong with almost anything from Debut, Post, Homogenic or Vespertine. But to give you a few different angles I'll name one song from each of these albums that you might have missed.Henry wrote:Lots of folks, including myself, just don't groove with Bjork's songs yet.Henrik wrote:This should be a friendly forum, so I'll keep my mouth shut.

Debut: Of all Björk's songs, my favorite is "Play Dead".
Post: "It's Oh So Quiet", amazing swing revival (although narrow-minded people think it's among her worst).
Homogenic: I don't think you will deny the beauty of "All Is Full of Love".
Vespertine: This album is truly best as a whole unit. It's more important when you play it than which song you choose. Play it late at night.

Björk got 12 votes more than Aerosmith on these boards. Once again our unseen antagonists infuriate us with their votes; we should have a hearty discussion with these lads on neutral ground some day.

Re: UMT 2012: Round of 128 #6
I like Aerosmith a lot, even if a lot of that is a relic of my 80s fandom. Nonetheless, I'll take them every day of the week over other 70s acclaimed rockers like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Eagles.
Still, Björk is just on another stratosphere entirely. Her music is very unique and particular, so I accept that it is not to everyone's taste. However, there's a reason that she is getting such strong support here - once somebody finds that he/she has an ear for her music, it's generally a quick road to all-out worship!

Re: UMT 2012: Round of 128 #6
The music video for "All Is Full of Love" is phenomenal.Henry wrote: Thanks Henrik.
It's Oh So Quiet had already won me over. I will listen again to Play Dead and All is Full of Love and see if I can catch on to their greatness.
I'll throw in some of my favorites as well:
"Aeroplane"
A snazzy jazzy offering from Debut, I really liked the sense of closeness that this song conveys despite the distance she is trying to overcome in the lyrics.
"Isobel"
This is my very favorite and marks the time in my mind when Björk became Björk. Her uniqueness, closeness to nature and wild experimentation all collide here. This is my favorite Björk song and ranks #5 on my all-time list.
"Hyperballad"
Another from Post, this is just heart-wrenchingly beautiful as Björk tries to make sense of her relationship.
"Hunter"
The lead track from Homogenic is also my favorite and ranks among my top 20 all time. The eerie strings, cookie-cutters-smashing-against-aluminum-foil beats, ominous synths and ghostly backing vocals never fail to captivate me. Her most mysterious song?
"Bachelorette"
Björk's knack for drama is on full display here, another favorite from Homogenic. A sort of sequel to "Isobel", the video again reveals a call for a return to nature. This ranks among my top 100 all-time.
"Scary"
The B-side to "Bachelorette" is little more than 2 minutes of harpsichord-led magic. Also in my top 100.
"Joga"
Homogenic's prettiest track (outdoing even "All Is Full of Love" for me), Björk's love affair with strings continues.
"New World"
Björk starred in the film Dancer in the Dark, and I have never left a cinema in such an absolute mess of tears. The story is a tale of a poor immigrant woman who is going blind and struggles to save money for an operation for her son to avoid the same fate. In this song she contemplates the simple sense of sight in Heaven. With the sense of grandeur augmented by the French horns and the context, this is perhaps her most stately song.
"Pagan Poetry"
I agree with Henrik in that Vespertine (my favorite album of hers) should be heard in full, but I'll highlight this as an organic swell of fiery passion. Another song in my top 50 all-time.
"Unison"
OK, I had to link to another favorite from Vespertine, as it also resides within my all-time top 100. If I make it to Heaven, this is the song I want to usher me in.
"Desired Constellation"
Another track that has brought me to tears, as few artists seem to tap into internal turmoil with such raw feeling and (dare I say it) healing power. My favorite cut from Medúlla.
"The Dull Flame of Desire"
A duet with Antony of "and the Johnsons" fame, this is has such a gorgeous build up, and their unique voices seem perfectly suited to transform this Russian poem into a sonic heavyweight. My favorite from Volta.
"Moon"
Biophilia is a cyclical album and this marks the ethereal beginning, as Björk weaves a tale of celestial rebirth.
"Cosmogony"
Another track from Biophilia, this tells four separate tales of how the universe came into being. She delivers them all with such reverent splendor that it is a real emotional highlight.
Re: UMT 2012: Round of 128 #6
"Where Is the Line" is awesome! It's from Medúlla.Greg Rumpff wrote:This was one of the handful by her I *do* like. And Henrik, I must be narrow-minded, as I'm not all that keen on "It's Oh So Quiet". It's nice enough, but it would rank among my bottom 20% of Björk songs.
