My Favorite Albums of My Lifetime (1996-2015)

Post by Listyguy »

So the other day I was thinking about the best music to come out since 1996 (the year of my birth), and I decided to put together a list of my favorite albums. The list is definitely skewed toward the late 90s and early 00s (and a strong showing in 2010), and I'm definitely guilty of not having listened to many albums to be released in 2015 or 2014, which is why they're practically nonexistent on the list. Anyway, here it is:

1. The Strokes - Is This It
2. Elliott Smith - Either/Or
3. Radiohead - Kid A
4. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
5. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
6. Radiohead - OK Computer
7. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid Maad City
8. The Notwist - Neon Golden
9. LCD Soundsystem - The Sound of Silver
10. White Stripes - Elephant
11. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
12. Adele - 21
13. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
14. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
15. Arcade Fire - Funeral
16. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
17. Beck - Sea Change
18. Sigur Ros - Agaetis byrjun
19. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
20. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
21. The xx - xx
22. Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
23. War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
24. Daivd Bowie - The Next Day
25. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
26. Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind

These are my favorite albums released since my birthyear of 1996. I think it's fitting that one of my top two favorite artists of all-time (I'll wait until Radiohead's next record comes out before I crown the champion) bookends the list.

5. Radiohead - Kid A (2000) 5
6. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (2005) 7

I included the all-time rank at the end of each line, and you'll notice this list isn't that far off from my all-time list. This discovery prompted another fun activity for me.

I decided to look into how much my all-time is made up of more recent records. Newer albums, or albums released since 1996, make up a greater percentage of my list the further up my all-time list you go. In this range of 66 albums, only 24% are from before 1996. Look at only the top 50? The figure falls to 20%. Only the top 25? Well, now we have a ridiculous 8%. However, as you expand the range, the percentage of older records in my all-time list quickly matches the percentage of total older records I've listened to. Among the 661 albums I've listened to (this was the most surprising figure; I thought I would have listened to more), 33.6% are from before 1996, and sure enough, older records make up 33% of my top 100 and 33.8% of my entire top 400.

Here are the total number of albums I've listened to from each decade:

1950s - 1 | 0.2% You guessed it: Kind of Blue.
1960s - 32 | 4.8%
1970s - 63 | 9.5%
1980s - 74 | 11.2%
1990s - 92 | 13.9%
2000s - 173 | 26.2%
2010s - 226 | 34.2%

Here are the number of albums from each decade that appear in my all-time top 400:

1950s - 0 | 0.0%
1960s - 20 | 5.0% Highest ranked: #75 - Odessey & Oracle
1970s - 41 | 10.3% #56 - Exile on Main St.
1980s - 42 | 10.5% #27 - The Queen Is Dead
1990s - 56 | 14.0% #3 - OK Computer
2000s - 114 | 28.5% #5 - Kid A
2010s - 127 | 31.8% #1 - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

And here are the number of albums from each decade that appear in my all-time top 100:

1950s - 0 | 0.0%
1960s - 3 | 3.0%
1970s - 5 | 5.0%
1980s - 12 | 12.0%
1990s - 17 | 17.0%
2000s - 26 | 26.0%
2010s - 37 | 37.0%

But here, when we look at the decade breakdown in my top 50, my biases become apparent:

1950s - 0 | 0.0%
1960s - 0 | 0.0%
1970s - 0 | 0.0%
1980s - 4 | 8.0%
1990s - 9 | 18.0%
2000s - 14 | 28.0%
2010s - 23 | 46.0%

I'm not sure if this is a result of me listening to more albums from this decade and by happenstance I've loved more of them, or if I just prefer the production quality of more recent albums. Even still, I may just prefer the array of genres of today.

But anyway, for those of you who made it through this useless analysis of my all-time list, congratulations! :greetings-waveyellow: If anyone wants to give decade breakdowns of their list, I'll be sure to read through them.

No offense, GucciLittlePiggy. I get wanting to know more about the music from your time period, but this is kinda sacrilegious! Maybe a little less 2000s and 2010s albums, and start exploring more '50s and '60s albums? There's some good ones.

This also relates to one of my biggest problems with the millennials (of which I'm a member). There are older stuff out there - stuff that are worth exploring. :music-listening: :music-guitarred:

Oh, no doubt. I have the intention of listening to every album on AM, including every album before the 1990s. I just have an incredibly finite amount of time, so I have to be choosy on which albums I'll listen to. A big reason I listen to so much of the 2010s is because I want to take part in our end-of-year polls, so I make room for those albums. One day, when I get out of school and have a secure job, and my daughter becomes more autonomous, I may finally have time to dive deep into the 50s, 60s, etc, but for now, I'll just slowly whittle my way through the classics.

Totally get, but maybe next one of those rare times you get to listen to something, put on "In the Wee Small Hours" or "Elvis Presley" or "Mingus Ah Um"? That one album from that decade just really bothers me... Sorry, it's your life and your music. :happy-partydance:

Definitely true. The AM list has basically been my guide to listening to post-2000 music moreso than earlier decades.

No, I'm not. And to be honest, I have a really hard time ranking albums. Also the songs list of what I like is way too long and might attract some scorn.

Pretty interesting lists overall.

Pretty cool to see recognition for Incubus on this forum. They were among my gateway drugs when I was first getting deep into music freshman year of high school. Your high placement of this album makes me want to revisit them for the first time in years.

Well, I decided to do just that! I listened to Elvis's eponymous debut. It was a curt, painless 30 minutes. ;) I've long been a fan of Elvis so it certainly met expectations as a pleasant listen on the first run-through. Hopefully, if my summer provides plenty of free time, my decade breakdowns will look drastically different. Hell, I've already increased my 50s representation by 100%!

Welcome to RYM! It's a really great resource and tool, and I'm looking forward to going through your list.

Since my all-time list leans heavily towards albums from the 90s and forward for the top 50 or so, I figured I'd give my top albums before my lifetime (Born in 1994), with their original positions in parenthesis.

1. Van Morrison | Astral Weeks (#6)
2. My Bloody Valentine | Loveless (#8)
3. Bruce Springsteen | Darkness on the Edge of Town (#13)
4. The Velvet Underground | White Light/White Heat (#15)
5. Television | Marquee Moon (#20)
6. Prince | Purple Rain (#22)
7. Bob Dylan | Blood on the Tracks (#23)
8. Miles Davis | Bitches Brew (#25)
9. Fleetwood Mac | Tusk (#27)
10. Joni Mitchell | Blue (#28)
11. Pixies | Doolittle (#29)
12. The Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street (#30)
13. Sonic Youth | Daydream Nation (#31)
14. The Beatles | The Beatles (White Album) (#33)
15. Bob Dylan | Blonde on Blonde (#36)
16. Slint | Spiderland (#38)
17. Bruce Springsteen | Born to Run (#40)
18. Roxy Music | For Your Pleasure (#41)
19. Tom Waits | Rain Dogs (#43)
20. Bob Dylan | Highway 61 Revisited (#44)
21. The Cure | Disintegration (#45)
22. David Bowie | Heroes (#46)
23. Slowdive | Souvlaki (#47)
24. Kate Bush | Hounds of Love (#48)

It's not just a matter of exploration, half of the AM ranked albums I have listened to have been released before 1995, yet only a quarter of album from my top 200 are more than 20 year old, and only 20 were released before the 80s.
I like music from before the punk wave, so there deeper you go in my all time list, the biggest part they take, but there is still not much from that period I really love.
Reasons are fairly simple, lots of the music I love are from genres that didn't exist back then (hip-hop, electronic music, metal...) and when it comes to rock my tastes go toward indie, most of the music I like are one way or another influenced by Bowie, the VU, Kraftwerk or the punk wave, and even more likely by a bunch of late 80s albums going from Doolittle to Daydream Nation, Paul's Boutique to It Takes a Nation, or even more underground genres of that era as house, twee or hardcore punk. And not much of the 300 or so pre 80s albums I have heard have changed that much.

So the top 20 albums from before I was born goes already deep in my top 200 :

The Beatles - Abbey Road (#16 )
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left (#25 )
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (#26 )
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? (#41 )
Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate (#57 )
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (#63 )
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (#71 )
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico (#74 )
Kraftwerk - Computerwelt/Computer World (#100 )
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (#109 )
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (#116 )
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock (#121 )

For a total contrast, my entire top 20 of favorite albums was released before my birth :D
There are a few close calls though, with Grace, In Utero and Automatic for the People a few years early. Is This It is floating near the 20 top, narrowly missing it the last time I made a list.

And at the opposite end of the scale, only one of my top 100, "Kind of Blue", was released less than four months before I was born.

Well none of my top 500 albums was released before I was born, and just six of my top 500 songs.

So I'm actually working on a list for these exact years, not because it is the favorites of my lifetime, but the span of my adulthood, when I actually came in knowing a bit about music, and also had real spending power for the first time. It's been a great 20 years, and I'm now paring my list down to 400-500 (that's only 20-25 per year, lest anyone accuse me of being excessive...OK, it's excessive). Stay tuned, hope to see more lists of this time period.....

Since I was born in 1956, only one album in my top 600 was released prior to my birth year:

Frank Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours" at 592.

So yeah, I compiled my favorite albums from Listyguy's lifetime, or alternatively my adulthood. It's been a great 20 years. And yes, I cheated with one from 2016. I also included classical, but only if it was written and recorded/released in the time period (or if the bulk of the album met that criteria). So there won't be any Beethoven symphonies released in the last 20 years, sensibly enough.

This was really hard, but for anyone who says nothing good gets made anymore, this is my exhibit A...

Great list, sobofsamiam! I'll definitely be using it to expand my knowledge of recent music beyond the top of the AM list.

That is an awesome list sonofsamiam. It mostly falls into 3 categories for me: Albums I like a lot; Albums I find very challenging; Albums I haven't heard.
So I listened to Georg Friedrich Haas - in vain. I'm glad I did. Maybe I should try Ligeti again, before that though there is Hass's other works and other albums from your list that I haven't heard. Just need some more hours in the days now.

As others have said, fantastic list sonofsamiam. I really love a lot of albums on here (the ones by Sheena Ringo, Mercury Rev, Spring Heel Jack, Boredoms....etc...etc..etc..). And a lot of them I've not really heard before. Looking forward to exploring.

Whenever I see a sonofsamiam list, I'm equally amazed and envious of all that he's heard. (I don't know where he's found the time; since, depending on the age he considers adulthood, it appears that he's several years younger than me. But it really does seem like he's heard every album/song ever recorded.) I'm particularly looking forward to listening to the Haas and Ringo albums (I'm hoping so much I can find them!), since these are the only two in the top 20+ that I haven't heard yet. From personal experience of exploring his lists, I can guarantee no one will be disappointed. Even in the (rare) instances that an individual song/album hasn't clicked with me, I still admire its creativity and am thankful I heard it.

Thanks for all the nice comments, guys. I do feel a little bad, as this is Listyguy's thread, and I didn't plan on stealing any thunder. But that 20-year period was just too tempting. Anyway, my whole point, always, on posting lists like this is to give people recommendations to other things they might like. (Though, Jamie, I know quite well I've not heard every album/song ever recorded, though I'm trying to get after a decent percentage of those that are any good.)

As far as other comments -- DaveC, really glad you liked in vain. For other Haas, definitely go for Hyperion and Limited Approximations. They're masterpieces as well. And, absolutely positively give Ligeti another try. I've thought hard about it, and despite tough competition from Reich, Xenakis, Schnittke, Penderecki, Gubaidulina, Adams, Part and many others I know I'm forgetting, he would have to be my favorite composer of the 2nd half of the 20th century. My recommendations of his are:

Atmospheres
Lux Aeterna
Requiem
(the above 3 all featured in 2001 -- the greatest of the bunch is the Requiem, maybe the most unsettling piece of music I've ever heard)
Lontano (in the same vein as the first three, and no less great)
Piano Concerto
Violin Concerto
(Ligeti has many great concertos, though the 2 above, both later works of his, are my favorites, lots of variety and even some fun!)
Etudes for Piano
(near the end of his career Ligeti put out some excellent piano music; of these, I recommend Fanfares from Book 1 and The Devil's Staircase from Book 2)

If these don't convince you, he's not gonna be your composer. If they do, there is so much more...
