REALLY long one.

I made a list of my favorite Modern Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. It started out as a response to the Rock Hall list. I thought about songs made after 1990 that had an impact after that. I included factors like personal taste, influence, chart performance, etc. While some may disagree, these are the songs I really like from the past quarter century of pop music. And as of the Rock hall's updated list, there is a bit of overlap.


With 706 songs and counting, and that's not even counting the ones I couldn't find on Spotify, this is probably the best indicator of my eclectic tastes.

Think of it basically as my Grammy Hall of Fame.

And yes, there is a "classic" version.

I have a grand total of one Spotify playlist I listen to (I have others that I used rarely to put an album that wasn't listed properly in its right order for listening).
The playlist is basically any song that I like/love but don't have in iTunes. Once I acquire a song for my personal collection, I remove it from the playlist. I add songs more often than I remove them, so it's been steadily growing over the past three years and sits at 277 right now. There is no theme or genre to it: the five most recently added tracks are by Django Reinhardt, Motorhead, Dolly Parton, Led Zeppelin and Kanye West. The original playlist had songs that I had ranked on my Favorite Songs list but didn't own, but it's morphed since then. I will occasionally remove a song, but it's rate (one example I can think of is Donald Fagen's "The New Frontier".

REALLY long one.

You weren't kidding! Once I get wifi at work/time, I'm going to give it a spin. Looks really interesting from the quick scroll through.

I made a mixtape for someone over Christmas, they requested my personal "Gems" so I gave him a concept mixtape about someone mining a precious stone. Divided into 5 segments of 3 songs each, I mixed the album in Audacity, but if you set the fade to 8 seconds on Spotify, you kinda get what I was going for (and the second half of Two Hearts.. was cut off).

The first is a set of cabaret-like songs describing the underground and the life of miners.
The second is a funky look at the preparation and decent into the mine.
The third is a rocking set about mining and searching for the perfect gem.
The fourth is a down-tempo electronic set that represents the cutting and shaping of these rough gems.
The fifth and final are a set of :certified: bangers that represent the now gleaming and sparkling gemstone!

Incidentally, I discovered Spotify only recently, mainly thanks to this site, simply due to the sheer amount of music to listen to. I still wonder how the business model works ? Anyone knows ? it doesn't seem to me like the ads are enough to warrant all this free music ? Anyone a premium user ?

Spotify has over 20 million paying users. And I'm definitely one of them, together with several other forumers I think.

Today, my College Rock playlist... Most of the 1,988 songs are alt rock & new wave from 1977-1994 mixed in with a little hip-hop, metal and a few other hidden gems... This playlist was loaded with Prince songs until he decided to pull them off of Spotify and only use them on some other service hardly anybody uses... Come back Prince, my playlists need you...

I noticed you have some playlists called "Undervalued", what are those about?

Because I have generic as hell tastes in songs, I decided to make a couple playlists highlighting the songs I like a fair bit more than critics. The main 'undervalued' playlist, once it's complete, will consist of all songs in my top 20 for each year that place at least 10 spots ahead of where they appear among their year on AM. Now that I'm done with the top 1000 albums, I plan to spend a lot of my time exploring individual songs, and hopefully these yearly lists will change to be more unique.

I have tried out the Apple Music for about half a year, first 3 months for free and then paid 3 months.
In the end I cancelled again, because compared to Spotify it did not provide me any added value.
Furthermore, currently I prefer Spotify over Apple Music when it comes to performance and usability. Currently, because this might surely change over time ...

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze (79 to 540 to 275)

I think between these three lists, I've went from overvaluing my view on classics to generally abandoning them, all to return to a more nuanced take on them. So, "Purple Haze" certainly isn't an all-time top of the top for me, but it's still an excellent song that I give credit to. Another change with this list is that I've come up with a scoring system, which helps songs I find to be technically impressive that otherwise don't speak to me as much.

Hmm I don't like scoring songs, because there's too many, but I can tier songs. Also, I stick to emotional response, unless the skill in the song makes me go, "Damn that was awesome!" Which to me is an emotional response.

personal past rankings are pretty interesting to look at, I was already a fan I have been similar to you, loving new music too much, or loving old music too much, but it's starting to even out.

The songs i would agree with your high ranking are "Heroin", "My Generation", and "A Change is Gonna Come". All others are good songs. I haven't heard "Cannonball".

My own top 500 is in the works right now, so I don't have the top 5 or 10 at the moment. I just know "Dancing Queen" is still #1. (For 3-4 years now I think. Before that was Paramore -"Decode", and before that was "Viva La Vida")
Historically I've taken a cautious approach when ranking. Songs that are new to me take longer to climb, and songs I knew since I was a kid take longer to fall.
