2015 EOY Poll Results -- Albums

Post by whuntva »

Welcome now to Part 2 of our epic rollout! we count down the best ALBUMS of 2015 right now.

I don't know exactly how many votes there were, but I can tell you the Top Two in this poll both got more votes apiece than any of the songs. I wonder if Sonofsamiam could provide the actual number for us.

Thanks again Sonofsamiam for compiling these and another thanks to everyone who voted.

Same format as before, only every Top 100 album gets an image.

Rank. Artist | Title
(Total points | Total votes)
--For Top 50 in Spreadsheet--

Critics' list: Placement in Critics' EOY
Biggest Fans: Any Top 10 votes or the next highest vote outside that.

And as a special bonus from the host, I will list any songs from the Top 100 songs where applicable.

[If I feel the need for witty commentary, I post it here like so]

Before I begin I should say in comparison to the relatively competitive and interesting songs poll, there was much more consensus and we agreed more with the critics in this poll.

Glad to see "Compton" in the top 100, that album made my top 10.

Also eager to see how much our number 1 crushes the competition. I'm predicting a total blowout.

Very surprised to see Barter 6 make the list, and so high to boot. Also, relieved to see my number two, I Don't Like Shit, make the cut.

I don't know, I mean sure it will win but we're in AM, rock and folk get a favorable bias toward hip-hop so I wouldn't bet that SS, TI and maybe even JH are that far behind.

I'm happy for Tetsuo & Youth's placement. It features some of the most beautiful moments I've heard in an album, regardless of genre, and Lupe's ingenious use of internal rhymes and assonance on this record have made him one of my favorite MCs. I think the critics will look back more fondly on this album in the years to come.

[Tame Impala had the highest placement for a true rock act. They also had the second most songs on the Top 100, including the overall #1. I really liked this album for its experimentation and catchy songs. I'm just glad we're finally giving the Aussies their due. As someone who kinda likes Australian music, this was refreshing to see.]

And here's the Top Two. Same as the critics.

One got more votes, but the other got a boatload more points.

2. Sufjan Stevens | Carrie and Lowell

Critics' List: 2
Biggest Fans: Andre (1); Dan (1); JWinton (1); phil (1); BleuPanda (2); schaefer.tk (2); Nassim (3); Brad (4); Future Critic (4); Gillingham (4); Matski (4); Michel (4); Nick (5); ordinary person (5); nicolas (6); GucciLittlePiggy (7); TimmyWing (7); acroamor (8); notbrianeno (9); Jackson (10); Maschine Man (10)
Songs in the Top 100:
Should Have Known Better (#6)
Fourth of July (#14)
No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross (#21)
The Only Thing (#64)

[Maybe some of his best writing ever. Sufjan should be AM's poet laureate with this album.]

Which means our overwhelming #1 pick is...

1. Kendrick Lamar | To Pimp a Butterfly

The Blacker the Berry (#2)
King Kunta (#5)
Alright (#26)
Wesley's Theory (#59)
How Much Does a Dollar Cost (#91)
These Walls (#96)
i was #12 for 2014.

[Kendrick won in a total landslide. This album had more songs than any other and received ten total top votes, which I think is a record. But really, was there ever any doubt? Kendrick went all out for this album, combining jazz, funk, rap and everything in between to make a bold statement. It may seem clunky to some, but on repeated listens, you find the flow and rhythm of the album, and those flaws are intentional. I highly recommend listening to this all at once with no distractions, so you can appreciate all the subtleties within. I may have enjoyed Tame Impala and Florence more, but Kendrick was gunning for this #1 spot. And he deserves it. Have a year, man!]

And the rollout ends. It seems we here tend to favor an album-song split in these polls. Only Fleet Foxes, Kanye, and Frank Ocean won the album and song rounds in the same year. But that's a wrap. I had fun with this rollout. I'll hand the reins over to someone else for the 2016 countdown, but this rollout talked me into liking a few records even more than I already did.

Great year everyone, and may your 2016 be full of great music as well!

Thanks again to whuntva and sonofsamiam for putting this all together. No big surprises in this list, but a great list nonetheless.

Just fyi, Julia Holter actually had a lead on Sufjan up until the very last day of voting. I think that would have come as something of a shock.

Results are pretty much expected, though I'm a little surprised Sleater Kinney didn't end up higher.

Interesting that most of the top is dominated by new albums of artists with arguably better previous albums. Not a lot of big artists creatively peaked this year.

Thanks for all the hard work whuntva. Sure the end results were predictable for most (not complaining about it) but the detailed effort put into the entries always makes it a joy to read through.

If her record had to lose out to anyone, Sufjan's album is fine by me. So happy that so many listeners have fallen in love with her music and I hope that she continues to get even better with each release.

Thanks again, whuntva and sonofsamiam! In our songs poll, I think of #1 as good and # 2 and 3 as great; and in the albums poll, I think of #1 as great and #2 and 3 as good. I'll happily take it, since it was only two years ago that I really felt out of touch when I didn't even like both our #1 song and (especially) album of the year. Sometimes (as Romain said in the songs thread) I just wonder if I'm getting old...

This is a very good point, I doubt the albums by Bjork, Sleater-Kinney, Sufjan, Blur, Joanna Newsom and Beach House are many people's favorites by those artists. I also like good kid, m.a.a.d city more than TPAB and Loud City Song more than Have You in My Wilderness, and those were two of my top three. I wonder if you could play this game any year though (ex. Caribou, Swans, Aphex Twin last year, Daft Punk in 2013, etc.).

Massive thanks to whuntva and sonofsamiam!!! Glad to see Bjork (and four other women!) in the top 10. Glad my #1 made it into the Top 40.

Interesting to note, I was one of the three people who liked TPAB, but didn't place it in the Top 10.

Same here actually. I've to listen to it once more to fix my opinion of it.

The Artists of the Decade (so far) - artists that have more than 1 album in AMF EOY Top 10 in 2010s:

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (2010); Reflektor (2013)
Beach House - Teen Dream (2010); Bloom (2012)
Grimes - Visions (2012); Art Angels (2015)
Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me (2010); Divers (2015)
Julia Holter - Loud City Song (2013); Have You in My Wilderness (2015)
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010); Yeezus (2013)
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. city (2012); To Pimp a Butterfly (2015)
St. Vincent - Strange Mercy (2011); St. Vincent (2014)
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz (2010); Carrie and Lowell (2015)
Swans - The Seer (2012); To Be Kind (2014)
Tame Impala - Lonerism (2012); Currents (2015)
The National - High Violet (2010); Trouble Will Find Me (2013)

I find it amazing that there are no less than 12 artists with 2 albums in the final yearly Top 10s. It shows how auteur oriented the forum is (and that's not a bad thing, if you ask me :) ).

The diversity is also noticeable. 6 bands / 3 female acts / 3 male acts (2 of them black)

Thanks for posting these every year, Chambord.

But ever since 2013 whenever I see these results I'm reminded of the injustice Vampire Weekend faces, an injustice that has resulted in them not appearing among these other artists!

You see, while their 2013 album, "Modern Vampires of the City", won our EOY 2013 poll handily, their 2010 album, "Contra" came right outside our top 10 albums for 2010. In fact, not only did the album land at number 11 on the EOY 2010 poll, it came in only 3 points behind "Halcyon Digest" (110 points to that album's 113), and was actually kicked out of the top 10 by the very last ballot!

http://pub37.bravenet.com/forum/static/ ... 9&cmd=show

As HRS said at the time "ouch!".

One can only imagine what would've been had that last ballot not been submitted.

Nice list. Maybe I'm being greedy because they're my two favorite artists of the decade, but Julia Holter and Swans legitimately could have had three each had people come around to them one album earlier (Holter I guess could've had four, but I don't think Tragedy is on par with her others). Ekstasis and My Father Will Guide Ms Up a Rope to the Sky are both excellent albums, for anyone who hasn't heard them.

Vampire Weekend were indeed very unlucky to miss the Top10 with Contra but they have an "AMF Album Of the year" title to their name so they're too among the greats of the decade. Anyway, in the remaining 4 years they have big chances to place another one in the T10, even 2 I'd say, even tho Rostam left.

Holter and Swans also will reach 3 albums I think.

And all eyes on Arcade Fire, Kanye West, St. Vincent and The National this year. Or the next.
