2015 EOY Poll Results--Songs

Here we go!

The 2015 poll on this side was very surprising. For the first time since 2011, we have a different result from critics.

Thank you to sonofsamiam for providing spreadsheets and to each and every one of you who voted.

In AM fashion, songs go first.

Top 50 get full formatting and special treatment, but bottom fifty get an abridging of the format.

Rank. Artist | Title
(Total points | Total votes)
--For Top 50 in Spreadsheet--

Critics' list: Placement in Critics' EOY
Biggest Fans: Any Top 10 votes or the next highest vote outside that.

[If I feel the need for witty commentary, I post it here like so]

I'll post the bottom 50 right away to get the ball rolling.

Yeah, where is everybody?

I was bummed that Mbongwana Star just missed, and was also hoping "Accelerate" would make it; 2 great songs that we appreciate here at AM!

It's also cool to see unranked and lower ranked songs by the critics pop up, it's nice when we forge our own collective path.

Nice rollout so far, whuntva!

Awesome to see my favorite song of the year make it to number 54. Wanna ride that wave!

And I don't think anyone would have imagined two Bieber songs would crack our top 100 this year but somehow that's exactly what happened. After listening to his singles on repeat the last couple weeks, I felt compelled to put three of his songs on my list ("Sorry" with its amazing chorus rounds out the trio).

"California" made the AMF Chart hall of fame, but not a single person voted it here. Now I kinda regret not voting, even thought that's the only song I would have voted for the wouldn't have made it high up anyways.

In 2015 the AMF was stunned by the appearance of Taylor Swift in its EOY 2014 poll.

In 2016 we're stunned by the appearance of Justin Bieber.

Who's next for 2017? Nickelback? Insane Clown Posse?

Happy that these great songs that didn’t squeeze into my top 50 got some votes from others:
98. Matthew E. White | Rock and Roll Is Cold (My #107)
80. Destroyer | Dream Lover (#225)
73. Thundercat | Them Changes (feat. Flying Lotus and Kamasi Washington) (#81)
62. Tame Impala | Eventually (#69)
56. Blur | Go Out (#305)
55. Beck | Dreams (#226)
53. Unknown Mortal Orchestra | Multi-Love (#302)
52. Mbongwana Star | Suzanna (#78)
48. Beach House | Elegy to the Void (#67)
47. Radiohead | Spectre (Probably would have made about #150 had I ranked it)
[And yes, I have ranked far more tracks than necessary for any remotely practical purpose]

76. Grimes feat. Janelle Monae | Venus Fly
My favourite from Grimes’ album. Surprised that this one hasn’t got more love. Given that many have listened quite closely to Grimes’ album, it’s one that was more likely to get album tracks on - and to me it is a standout. And, like Sweepstakes Ron, also surprised that California (my second favourite and an AMF Chart Hall of Famer) didn’t get any votes. I know there’s three more coming though (that I can think of).

72. Low | Landslide
When I see a song that high with that few votes that I haven’t heard, it goes straight to my ‘to listen’ list. Either these two voters are totally out of step with everyone else or they know something that the rest of us don’t.

49. Panda Bear | Tropic of Cancer
Strong showing from just 3 voters (the highest?). I’m happy to be among them.

Three more coming in.

Yes, after the relatively predictable results in 2013 and 2014, this list definitely has its own identity--separate from the critics' list.

I like "Hotline Bling". In fact, I like it a lot. I even put it at my number #18 for the year.

But if this song ends up beating out "Let it Happen" and "King Kunta" to become the number 1 song for 2015 once the update comes, then I'll be sorely disappointed.

I feel fairly confident that this is the only officially compiled list anywhere that has William Parker one place in front of Justin Bieber. That is just awesome.

Also, shocking to see "Hotline Bling" at #41 given its critics placement. We're a bunch of firebrands here!

"Hotline Bling" just feels so forgettable to me compared to all the other great songs this year. And it's not like I dislike Drake, but there was so much to be ecstatic about in 2015 that settling with this as number one was disappointing. I really can't imagine that lasting past the end of decades lists.

It's especially weird when I predicted "Seasons" would be number 1 for 2014 the first time I heard it (and everyone knew it would be "Get Lucky" and "Pyramids" in the years before). "Hotline Bling" just doesn't have that immediate click, that thing that announces its uniqueness, though now that I think about it nothing did this year. 2015 will likely be the least stable year by the time of the EOD lists come out.

I can't foresee it ranking higher than "Hold On, We're Going Home" by decade's end. I really like the song though. "HOWGH" is just leaps and bounds better.

That's part of it; there are a handful of other Drake songs that deserve more acclaim. But then that seems true for all the other big songs this year outside of Kendrick Lamar. I'd still take either "Elephant" or "FLWOGB" over "Let It Happen," or "Oblivion" over "Flesh Without Blood" and "Realiti." We also don't live in a world interesting enough to give people like Courtney Barnett an actual chance.

Wow, this happened quickly! When I left for work this morning, the rollout hadn't started yet, and now we're already in the top 30. (I'm definitely not complaining.) I do love it when our polls look considerably different than the critics. It's why I always go to the individual lists of the forum members to find those lesser- known gems before the overall critics' list. I look at it this way: I've either heard the songs on the critics' list a hundred times already, or I will eventually. However, I don't get many chances to discover great songs like "For Fannie Lou Hamer," "Naught," and "Black Mambo," just to name a few.

By the way, thanks for all the work, whuntva and sonofsamiam. The presentation looks great!

Tame Impala getting lots of tracks in, better than I expected. Looks like they are tied for the most entries so far with Kendrick Lamar (both at 4).

I expected Sapokanikan to do a bit better, but I see scanning back through the votes that there was a bit of division on which of Joanna Newsom's songs should be included. If only we'd secretly agreed beforehand on how to catapault Joanna to the top.

[THIRD back-to-back this tournament. Would "Loud Places" over "Good Times" be considered an upset?]

Is it ok for me to post predictions for the top ten? I doubt anything could really be considered a spoiler at this point.

Sure.

Yeah, the Top 10 seem pretty obvious. It's the order that's a mystery though.

All I'll say now is...It was close, but not close at the same time.

Haha, I actually just blanked on one of the ten so I guess it will be a surprise for me in the end!

I think I know the one you're missing. It's not doing much on the 2015 EOY but definitely will for 2016.

If everyone's ready, we have the results in.

Also, I have a few list regrets of my own. I just recently heard Claptone's album from 2015, and both the album and the song "Puppet Theatre" (with Peter, Bjorn, and John) would have made my lists. It's sad how good everything is in retrospect.

But anyway...
But I love it...

[RIP Bowie. But this is by no means our final sendoff, as his last album and one other song from said album could well qualify for the 2016 poll. However, keep in mind that due to "Blackstar" placing on this year's list, it is ineligible for the 2016 list despite being on a 2016 album.]

Well in my universe I'd say that both "Loud Places" and "Good Times" over "Gosh" is the true upset here.

But as this isn't my universe, then yeah, it's probably an upset.

Never mind, I forgot about the Julia Holter song. "Lazarus" was release in 2015, no?

Yes. It was a December release, but given Blackstar being one of those borderline albums, "Lazarus" will be eligible for 2016.

I totally forgot to vote for "Blackstar". I doubt my vote (which would have been between 30-40) would have bumped it up a spot, though.

WE have now entered the Top 5!

Pay close attention to the scores here. They tell an interesting story.

Black man taking no losses
Bitch where you when I was walkin'?

5. Kendrick Lamar | King Kunta
(470.29 points | 16 votes)
Critics' List: 2
Biggest Fans: Craig (2); Dan (2); schaefer.tk (2); BleuPanda (4); Future Critic (5); ordinary person (5); Bruno (6); GucciLittlePiggy (8); notbrianeno (8); JWinton (9); Nick (9)

["Kunta" earned a Top 5 placement despite not receiving a single #1 vote.]

Put me on a pedestal and I'll only disappoint you

4. Courtney Barnett | Pedestrian at Best
(551.19 points | 21 votes)
Critics' List: 4
Biggest Fans: acroamor (1); Andre (1); BleuPanda (1); whuntva (1); Nick (2); Maschine Man (6); Bruno (7); schaefer.tk (8); Charlie Driggs (9); Jackson (10)

[My overall #1 falls short yet again. This was the most interesting, fun, and infinitely quotable song all year. It was another moment where I know first listen which song wins it for me.]

I go back alone
Image
3. Grimes | REALiTi
(599.83 points | 22 votes)
Critics' List: 13
Biggest Fans: Gillingham (1); Nassim (2); notbrianeno (2); BleuPanda (3); JamieW (3); Nick (4); Bruno (5); JWinton (5); whuntva (6); bonnielaurel (7)

[It was a good year for Grimes, largely fueled by this song. It broke records on the AMF charts that have yet to be surpassed. Back in July, "REALiTi" was the only 2015 on the all-time list. The critics didn't like it as much as we did, but it was still well-liked. Now, Grimes has the highest EOY songs poll placement for a woman--unless she already held that distinction with "Oblivion". I think she did. Well done, Grimes! Enjoy this placement, you earned it. and by the way, most of the votes did specify they were for the demo version, not the album version. Sonofsamiam did not split the votes between the two.]

For the Top 2, pay close attention to those scores. You probably know what the two songs are, but can you guess who won? And by what spread?

And it's down to the wire. Neck and neck. The go for the final line. The home stretch.

Kendrick and Tame Impala leading this whole way make one final lunge.

Kendrick Lamar. No, Tame Impala. No, Kendrick. No, Impala. They're at the line....Photo finish!!!!

2. Kendrick Lamar | The Blacker the Berry

Critics' List: 12
Biggest Fans: Jackson (1); schaefer.tk (1); sonofsamiam (1); TimmyWing (1); BleuPanda (2); Henrik (2); Gillingham (4); PlasticRam (6); amnt1883 (7); Chambord (7); Nick (7); Bruno (8); ordinary person (8); JamieW (10)

[Talk about Critical Dissonance. AMers loved it, critics said it was just aight. A monumental victory for Kendrick at his most provocative and experimental. no matter what else he does, there will never be another "Blacker the Berry".]

Which Leaves as our #1...

Something's trying to get out
And it's never been closer

1. Tame Impala | Let it Happen
(746.73 points | 25 votes)
Critics' List: 3
Biggest Fans: Chambord (1); Charlie Driggs (1); Craig (1); Dan (1); Nick (1); phil (1); ordinary person (2); Maschine Man (3); Bruno (4); whuntva (5); PlasticRam (7); Brad (10); notbrianeno (10)

[I don't know what's more exciting. The fact that we gave it to the Aussies for once. The fact that even in a year as diverse as this, the guitar group still wins out. Or just how close it feels. I dunno what 43 points translates into, but I do know it was closer than our songs poll. Despite getting the most overall #1 votes, Kendrick was still able to make it interesting. This wasn't my first choice, but I am glad it won!]

Whew! And that's a wrap. Tame Impala now enters the AM pantheon and we finish a nail-biter of a songs poll.

Albums won't be out tomorrow. Basically all my college classes are tomorrow. I will try for Thursday, but it should be no later than Friday.

Awesome presentation, whuntva and sonofsamian! This list is the best collaborative EOY list I've seen.

I'm surprised "Lazarus" didn't make the list. Don't you consider it a 2015 song?

Also, how many points did Blick Bassy's "Aké" get? Both Dan and I had it quite high on our lists. Thanks Dan for making me aware of this wonderful song!

Only two songs in the top 10 were in my top 50:

Grimes - Flesh without Blood
Grimes - REALiTi

Claire Boucher is the link between myself and the rest of the world.

For some reason I thought Lazarus was 2016, probably because the video was released in early January, maybe other made the same assumption. I didn't vote for Black Star but Lazarus would have made the bottom of my list.

I think I like our top 20 more than the critics one, the fact that Hotline Bling, Alright, Trap Queen, Where Are U Know and Hello are not being a real plus. I share the forum puzzlement over Hotling Bling, it's a good song but really doesn't ring "#1 of the year".
I didn't get how The Blacker The Berry wasn't the unanimous highlight from TPaB in critics list, so glad we corrected that !
I was hoping REALiTi could win but it feel quite short, nice showing though.
After seeing No Comprende in 2 other top 10s, I had high hopes for Low (pun intended), I guess #29 is pretty good for a song with only 6 votes.
Also nice to see we liked Sunday Candy and My Baby Don't Understand Me better than the critics, though it would have been even better if it wasn't at the detriment of Coffee.

I Know It's Gonna Be Good Times is the song I like the least in Jamie XX's album, and Loud Places is my favorite, so I'm happy they switched place.
