Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Wednesday at 16:00 UTC.

Re: Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 11
Not a very strong group, really.
235 | Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention | Hot Rats
84 | Primal Scream | Screamadelica
150 | Bruce Springsteen | Born in the U.S.A.
29 | The Beatles | Rubber Soul
No competition at all. Purple rain is good enough to beat the other 3, though.
78 | John Coltrane | A Love Supreme
44 | Prince | Purple Rain
200 | PJ Harvey | To Bring You My Love
181 | Kendrick Lamar | good kid, m.A.A.d. city
It's really close between the first two first, and then it's really close between the last two.
52 | The Band | The Band
73 | Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
168 | Pretenders | Pretenders
229 | The Who | My Generation/The Who Sings My Generation
Exactly the same comments as group 2.
31 | Arcade Fire | Funeral
220 | Björk | Homogenic
111 | Oasis | Definitely Maybe
170 | Tricky | Maxinquaye
235 | Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention | Hot Rats

Re: Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 11
Rubber Soul
Born in the USA
Hot Rats
Screamadelica
Beatles are another Top 10. The rest was a bit harder to determine.
Purple Rain
Love Supreme
To Bring you my Love
Good Kid, MAAD City
Prince steals the bracket. Probably the easiest for me to rank, although Kendrick is on my all-time list as well.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
My Generation
The Band
Pretenders
Perhaps a tad overrated, but definitely Kanye's best album, and even Kanye knows it.
Funeral
Definitely Maybe
Maxinquaye
Homogenic
I agree with AM order. Funeral is Top 100, Definitely Maybe is up there, the rest are just okay.

Guess he made MBDTF by accident. Because I'd argue that those other two albums are very simple and predictable musically, especially Yeezus. Shouldn't he have realized this while recording them?PlasticRam wrote:Kanye actually thinks Yeezus and 808s are the albums people are gonna be listening 100 years from now.whuntva wrote: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Re: Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 11
If 808s sounds predictable today, then I think that's really just due to the so-called "Seinfeld effect", where something daring and new is copied so many times over that people who come to the original later on may fail to see what made it so unique in the first place. While auto-tune was pretty commonplace in hip-hop before Kanye ever used it, it was used primarily to create celebratory partying/clubbing songs. Kanye was really the first one to use autotune to create a much more stark and dim form of hip-hop, exploring how autotune could be used to sound cold and robotic as opposed to warm and full of life. 808s opened the door for angsty, introspective hip-hop and R&B, and without it it's pretty easy to see how you wouldn't have artists like Kid Cudi or Drake or The Weeknd.luney6 wrote: Guess he made MBDTF by accident. 808s seems sort of predictable musically and structure wise. More so on some tracks than others, I guezs. I suppose it's not all that bad, though, then. But I heard Yeezus when it was first released, and it seemed cheesy even then.Nick wrote:If 808s sounds predictable today, then I think that's really just due to the so-called "Seinfeld effect", where something daring and new is copied so many times over that people who come to the original later on may fail to see what made it so unique in the first place. Born in the USA
Rubber Soul
Hot Rats
Sceamadelica
Top two are in my top 25, the other two aren't all that hot to me.
A Love Supreme
Good Kid, Maad City
Purple Rain
To Bring You My Love
Wow, what a bracket. two I rate 4.5, two I rate 4. PJ Harvey should not be in last place this early in the game, that's for sure.
My Beautiful Dark Twist Fantasy
The Who Sings My Generation
The Band
Pretenders
Kanye runs away with this one
Funeral
Definitely Maybe
Homogenic
Maxinquaye
Top two are pretty good, Bjork's album is OK, and the Tricky album I hate.

For the most part, easy #1 picks but good-to-great brackets. The second bracket is absolutely incredible, top to bottom; it's too bad only one can advance to the next round.

Perhaps a tad overrated, but definitely Kanye's best album, and even Kanye knows it.

The thing with Yeezus actually was that he wanted to make a minimalistic album. Actually it is a cool sound cos at first it was maximalistic, three hours long. But then Rick Rubin did his thing and reduced it (also the density), so there's a lot of stuff happening, but it's not too much. Maxi-minimalistic For me, listening to Yeezus for the first time was a mind-blowing experience.

If you're talking about the lyrics partially, I guess a lot of people are put off by them, but I just think they're not something that are completely serious and it's not a lyrical album.luney6 wrote:But I heard Yeezus when it was first released, and it seemed cheesy even then.
Musically if you think it's cheesy, well I don't think it is, so we just have difference of opinion and that's okay.

Remember guys! Don't edit previous posts with rankings of other brackets unless you specify! I might not catch them!

Re: Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 11
To me, the instrumentation and the arrangements seem rather mediocre. And the outbursts and everything is where you expect it to be, and at any one time, there does not seem to be enough musical depth to seem very interesting. Normally, I don't put much weightage on the lyrics of a song, unless they really take away from it, or really add to it.PlasticRam wrote:If you're talking about the lyrics partially, I guess a lot of people are put off by them, but I just think they're not something that are completely serious and it's not a lyrical album.luney6 wrote:But I heard Yeezus when it was first released, and it seemed cheesy even then.
Musically if you think it's cheesy, well I don't think it is, so we just have difference of opinion and that's okay.
I think we do have a difference in opinions, then.
But I heard 808s again, and I think it's better than I thought it was at first, at least for a few songs (like Love Lockdown and Heartless). Still not as good as MBDTF, but not bad, at least arrangement-wise, and the tunes are more pleasant.

23 hours until the halfway point of this Bracketology! Votes in that time are more than accepted!

Re: Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 11
Very good week, 16 albums I like. My #16 of the week would have been #13 in any other week (I think, haven't really checked...)
5) Bruce Springsteen | Born in the U.S.A. (top 300 of all time)
6) Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention | Hot Rats (serious contender for top 400 of all time)
7) Primal Scream | Screamadelica (top 400 of all time)
12) The Beatles | Rubber Soul (C)
Hot Rats is one of my favorite discoveries of recent memories and I could see it becoming my favorite of this bracket.
I think I have said a long time ago that Screamadelica was the most overrated album ever, I obviously have changed my mind since !
3) Kendrick Lamar | good kid, m.A.A.d. city (probably top 200 of all time next time I make a list)
9) Prince | Purple Rain (B-)
13) John Coltrane | A Love Supreme (C)
14) PJ Harvey | To Bring You My Love (C)
While everybody was raving about to Pimp a Butterfly, it hasn't done much to me beside making me relisten and become a huge fan of good kid, m.A.A.d city... the 45 minutes or so string of songs from Backseat Freestyle to Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst is constantly outstanding (not as big a fan of what comes before and after, but it's far from bad too). So who knows, maybe at the time of release of the next Kendrick album, TPaB will click with me too.
2) Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (#49 of all time)
8) Pretenders | Pretenders (top 400 of all time)
10) The Who | My Generation/The Who Sings My Generation (C+)
15) The Band | The Band (C)
1) Arcade Fire | Funeral (#4 of all time)
4) Björk | Homogenic (#236)
11) Oasis | Definitely Maybe (C)
16) Tricky | Maxinquaye (C-)
Of all the albums that stand a slim chance to win this game, I will root for Funeral ! (Though I see that Homogenic is already, and deservedly, giving it a run for its money).
Maxinquaye doesn't work as a whole because of half the tracks are not so good, but the other half is better than a good chunk of this week's albums (which are also quite good, so just saying Maxinquaye has some fantastic songs)
5) Bruce Springsteen | Born in the U.S.A. (top 300 of all time)
6) Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention | Hot Rats (serious contender for top 400 of all time)
7) Primal Scream | Screamadelica (top 400 of all time)
