I think this is a bit silly, but FIFA does it for their World Cups. Sorted first by round eliminated (remember that the quarterfinal losers competed in a consolation bracket to determine their final placement), then by points, then by vote percentage, last by votes.

Nations were divided into four pools. The four pools were: Africa + one random European country (Germany), the Americas, Asia + Oceania, and Europe. Groups were randomly assigned one team from each of these pools.

Ties in group stage are broken first by vote percentage, next by highest total in a single match, then by second-highest total in a single match, and finally by random lot.

This thread also hosts the complete playlists for nations that have been eliminated. That way everyone can hear all of the songs submitted for the game. They are posted here after the stage in which they were eliminated is completed.

The playlist orders for dummy teams were determined by a random number generator.

Standings have been updated after the first round of matches. A few observations:

- Asia and the Americas are struggling. Asia only has two teams in position to advance (Japan and Indonesia), both by rather tenuous margins. The Americas are doing slightly better, with Brazil and Cuba both well clear of elimination based on vote percentage differential.

- On the other hand, Africa is doing great! Ghana and South Africa got 100% of the votes in their groups, and the continent in total has 5 teams in position to advance (6 if you count Germany, which was included in the Africa pool).

- Traditional folk music is not very well-liked, at least based on voting patterns so far. Iran, Canada, and the United States all used a folk song in the first round, and none received more than a single vote (Iran went voteless). However, England's more modern take on a traditional folk song was a great success, nearly beating Beethoven.

Updated after the second matches.

Brazil is the class of the tournament so far, having the highest vote percentage and being tied with Cuba for most total points. On the other end of the spectrum are Iran--with 0 points and 15% of the vote--and Mexico (sorry Blanco)--with 1 point but a tournament worst 10% of the vote.

Now that some teams have officially been eliminated, I can start posting the full playlists. Note that some are incomplete as I haven't copied every submitted song from my mail over to the word document I use to prep these yet.

From Smithsonian's Indian Music of the Southwest, producer Laura Boulton (she evidently ran the American Indian field recording game back in the day) describes it as "Perhaps the most sacred ceremony of all the Navajo chants for in it the gods and godessess appear." This is an abbreviated version, as it is meant to last all night and involve various competing teams of dancers while the singers chant in the voices of the gods. - Jeff

Field recording of prisoners singing a work song. - Jeff

Giora Feidman - The Klezmer's Freilach
Kletzmer is the folk music of the Ashkenazi Jews. It combines Middle Eastern with Central European influences. Feidman is a clarinet player who emigrated from Argentina to Israel. The clarinet in Kletzmer music has its own picaresque style with glissandos and distorted sounds. - bonnielaurel

Mor Karbasi - Ladrona de Granadas

Russia

RUSSIA
Manager: BITUSSR
Record: 3 points | 12 votes | 43%
Result: Fourth in Group C; eliminated in the group stage.
Team MVP: Bi-2 i Chicherina - Moy rok-n-roll [Second in match one with 5 votes]

Roster
Alla Pugacheva - Ne otrekayutsya lyubya
This is probably Russia's most famous and favorite singer and she's had tons of hits, but this ("Do Not Renounce Your Love" or something similar) has to be at the top. Just beautiful all around. - BITUSSR

Bi-2 i Chicherina - Moy rok-n-roll
The first track ("My Rock 'n Roll") is actually a collaboration between two different artists, the band Би-2 and the singer Чичерина. I think it's a very poignant piece with heartfelt vocals and some cool strings. It's more of a pop ballad than a rock song, though both are rock musicians. - BITUSSR

Kino - Zvezda po imeni solntse
Well, if Alla Pugacheva is Russia's Barbara Streisand meets Madonna, then Kino and their frontman are Russia's The Beatles meet The Doors. Probably considered Russia's best rock band of all time, and this is the title track off their 1989 album ("The Star Called Sun"), released less than a year before the lead singer's death in a car crash at the age of 28. - BITUSSR

Krematoriy - Musornyi veter
[This] is from one of Russia's best bands in my opinion, Крематорий (Crematorium), who have been around a long time, but this is one of their best songs. Their stuff is often sad and this is a perfect example of their style. I tried to think which Western band to compare them to and couldn't come up with anyone. They're kinda folk rock/country often with a lot of depressing things in the lyrics. - BITUSSR

Nogu svelo! - Nashi yunye smeshnye golosa
A personal favorite, this is a unique band with a very particular sound that's always evolving. It was hard picking just one so I had to settle for the one which I thought showcased all of their abilities and strengths ("Our Youthful Funny Voices"). Melodic guitar, cool synth, mellow trumpet. Good stuff. - BITUSSR

Russkiy razmer - Vesna
[A] dance/club track ("Spring") with its sweet driving melody that gets your feet tapping. - BITUSSR

Smyslovye gallutsinatsii - Vechno molodoy
Not much I can say about this one ("Forever Young") other than I really like the sax. Sounds pretty haunting and angsty. - BITUSSR

Tehnologiya - Rano ili pozdno
The band modeled themselves after Depeche Mode and even copied a lot of their sounds but nevertheless came up with some great tunes of their own, like this quiet ballad ("Sooner Or Later"). I thought about using a few upbeat synth-pop songs of theirs, but I felt this was a better overall effort. - BITUSSR

New Zealand

NEW ZEALAND
Manager: DaveC
Record: 1.5 points | 6 votes | 21%
Result: Fourth in Group F; eliminated in the group stage.
Team MVP: The Topp Twins - Nga Iwi E [Third in match three with 3 votes]

Roster
Herbs – Sensitive to a Smile
Fat Freddy’s Drop are today’s best known product, but Herbs are the grandfathers of the New Zealand’s reggae scene. - DaveC

Maisey Rika - Akoako O Te Rangi
A Love Song. - DaveC

Marie Te Hapuku - Pōkarekare ana
This love song arose in the north of Auckland at the start of World War One. It then drifted to the East Cape, where it was modified into an action song telling of Paraire Tomoana's 1912 courtship of Kuini Raerena.
In this version, the audience spontaneously joins in. This is not unusual, as this song is much loved by Maori and non-Maori alike, and the words are well known even to those who don’t speak te reo Māori. - DaveC

Moana and the Tribe - Te Kakano
Many artists continue to write new songs in Te reo Māori. Pre-eminent amongst these is Moana Maniapoto, her music is described as a fusion of traditional Māori haka, chants and taonga puoro, with contemporary styles. It is very hard to pick just one song from her songbook. Te Kakano explores the concept of adoption within a culture where genealogy is fundamental. - DaveC

Ngāti Kahungunu group - Haere mai
This is a well known and often recorded song with many interpretations.
Ngāti Kahungunu are a Māori iwi (translated as ‘tribe’ or ‘confederation of tribes’) located along the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. - DaveC

The Topp Twins - Nga Iwi E (from 5 minutes)
This song was written as a song of solidarity for the people of the Pacific. It was adopted by Greenpeace who sung it on board the Rainbow Warrior while protesting French nuclear testing at Muroroa in French Polynesia. Performed here by the Topp Twins - the worlds only comedic yodeling, lesbian twin sisters and well known activists and TV personalities. - DaveC

Various Artists - Paikea
Paikea is a mythic ancestor of the Ngati Porou tribe. Various legends say he came from Hawaiki to Whangara, just north of Gisborne, riding on the back of a whale.
Te Matatini is a biennial festival and competition celebrating Māori culture. The festival generally takes place over a three or four day interval and includes competition in a variety of specific forms of Māori song (waiata) and dance. What I like about this clip is it’s impromptu nature: The TV presenter is expecting a different song. It looks and sounds more rehearsed than it is because Paikea is an action song so the movement is integral to the song. - DaveC

SWEDEN
Manager: Henrik
Record: 4.5 points | 14 votes | 50%
Result: Third in Group F; eliminated in the group stage.
Team MVP: Cornelis Vreeswijk - Balladen om herr Fredrik Åkare och den söta fröken Cecilia Lind [First in match three with 6 votes]

Roster
Henrik took over as Sweden's manager after the first round, meaning that one dummy-team submission appeared for Sweden (in this case, Marin/Marin - Bellman's Polska).

Barbro Hörberg - Med ögon känsliga för grönt (With Eyes Sensitive to Green)
Simply beautiful. - Henrik

Cornelis Vreeswijk - Balladen om herr Fredrik Åkare och den söta fröken Cecilia Lind (The Ballad About Mr. Fredrik Åkare and the sweet miss Cecilia Lind)
I rarely miss the chance to nominate my favorite Swedish (Dutch-Swedish actually) poet. Oh, and skip the awful 0:16 intro that doesn't belong to the song. - Henrik

Erik Lundin - Suedi
A rap song about integration. It's the most important song in Sweden right now. Erik Lundin's father is from Gambia and "Suedi" means "Swedish" in Arabic. He grew up with friends with roots from other countries, who didn't fit in the Swedish society. He once visited his relatives in Gambia and felt that this was his real home, but then he was presented as "Suedi", which was a foul language that he didn't want to be associated with. But later in life Erik decided to be Swedish and be proud of it. "Jag vakna upp och va Suedi" ("I woke up and was Suedi"). - Henrik

Jenny Wilson - Let My Shoes Lead Me Forward
Sweden is sometimes considered to have a lot of pop artists on AM, but there are actually many others that deserve to be included as well. - Henrik

Kent - 747 (Swedish) / 747 (English)
Kent is Sweden's biggest band since the mid-90's. They have three songs on AM (one in the top 6000) that are worth checking out. Their number of "classics" in Scandinavia almost can't be counted though. It was really difficult to pick one song, but I finally decided to go with "747" which they recorded in both Swedish and English, so you can choose which version you want to listen to. - Henrik

Marin/Marin - Bellman's Polska
An example of Swedish polska, a traditional dance tune played in 3/4 time similar to a waltz, but with fewer beats per minute and a different beat emphasis. - Jeff

Opeth - Bleak
Taken from the 145th best album of all time according to RYM, and getting closer and closer to AM's top 3000, this is probably the ideal introduction to Swedish metal. - Henrik

Cheb Khaled – Didi
Dummy-team submission by DaveC and Jeff. This is an example of Pop Rai, a Western-infused evolution of a folk music that originated in poor communities near Oran during the 1930s. Khaled—known as the King of Rai—is the most famous Algerian artist internationally and this is probably his most well-known song. - Jeff

A chorus of women with a female soloist – The Bride
This is a marriage celebration from a Berber people known as the Kabyles who "represent one of the oldest Northwestern African civilizations [and] hold poetry and music in high esteem." - Jeff

This aptly titled song is a modern take on cumbia, filtered through house and dancehall to make the style known as digital cumbia. - Jeff

Choco Indian shaman – Healing Song
The Choco Indians live in the lowland rainforests along the coast of the Panama-Colombia border. From the liner notes to The Spirit Cries: Music from the Rainforests of South America & the Caribbean: "[This is a] [h]ealing song, performed by a shaman to cure a man of fever. The shaman, inspired by a drink distilled from cassava, sings this song while shaking a palm frond to exorcise the evil spirit causing the illness." - Jeff

CANADA
Manager: DocBrown
Record: 4 points | 10 votes | 37%
Result: Third in Group H; eliminated in the group stage.
Team MVP: Tanya Tagaq Gillis – Qimmiruluapik [First in match two with 6 votes]

Roster
DocBrown took over the Canadian team after it had received a few dummy-team submissions and mixed his own selections with a few of those already submitted.

Émile Benoît - Vive la Rose

Hélène Baillargeon and Alan Mills – A la Claire Fontaine
A traditional French-Canadian song whose origins are dated to the early 1600s in Quebec - Jeff

Lhasa de Sela - El Desierto

Natalie MacMaster - In My Hands Volcanic Jig

Perth County Conspiracy - Stories of Old

Stompin' Tom Connors - The Hockey Song
DocBrown submitted his list mostly without comment, but I must republish this quote of his in reference to this track: "I hate Stompin' Tom and I hate the Hockey Song, but it's not Canada without."

Tanya Tagaq Gillis - Qimmiruluapik
This is an example of throat singing. She sings in Inuktitut, an Inuit language. - bonnielaurel.
DocBrown had also submitted Tanya Tagaq's Force, but opted instead to go with bonnielaurel's earlier entry.

Tom Brandon – The Jam on Jerry's Rocks
Field recording by Edith Fowke of an Ontario shanty boy (aka lumberman or lumberjack) sharing a song that was popular in logging camps - Jeff

INDIA
Manager: luney6
Record: 1 point | 7 votes | 26%
Result: Fourth in Group H; eliminated in the group stage.
Team MVP: Avial - Chakala [Third in match one with 3 votes]

Roster
A. R. Rahman - Jai Ho
I don't like this song, but it's pretty popular, so why not use its popularity? It might do well. - luney6

Avial - Chakala
There are parts of this song I like, like the bass, and the guitar at times, but it seems to be too intent on following a pop music approach for me. However, it may do well. Also, I don't know what the lyrics mean because they are in a South Indian language, which I don't speak. - luney6

Cactus - Tuchho
Once again, in a similar vein to the Avial song. - luney6

Hariprasad Chaurasia & Shiv Kumar Sharma - Call of the Valley

Mohammad Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Johnny Walker - Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan
This song, like most of the popular music here, was released as a part of a movie. I find it more likeable, musically and otherwise than most other such songs. I can translate the lyrics if needed, so that people can comprehend the song. - luney6

Ravi Shankar - Raga Jog
By far my favorite song here. Even if we don't get this far (and we probably won't), everyone must listen to this. - luney6

Shankar Ehsan Loy, Javed Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Abbhay Deol - Senorita
Not sure how well this song will do, or if India will get this far. Song from a movie and lyrics may be worth translating. - luney6

Suraj Jaggan, Akriti Kakkar - Johnny Gaddar
Another song from a film. Again, this is one of the few songs on this list where the lyrics might be worth translating. Also, as a sidenote, the movie this song is from, Johnny Gaddar, is also worth watching, although the ending can be slightly disappointing. This is demonstrated by the fact that, despite not being all that well known, even among Indian audiences, the film can be found in TSPDT's 21st century list, albeit at a comparatively low position. - luney6

When a man desires to meet a woman, it is not uncommon for him to sing with his friends for her." - Jeff

Ses coses no són fàcils per ningú / dins aquest iglú / tan descongelat, tanta longitud, / tan ple de finals, tan privat de tú.
Things are not easy for no one / inside this igloo, / so defrosted, so much length, / so full of endings, so deprived of you.

I do not mind at all. I have been meaning to get the others up too, but have been busy at work lately and have lacked either to time or motivation to get around to it. I still hope to post the others eventually though.
