Unacclaimed III GRAND FINALE

Post by whuntva »

Happy New Year everyone!

Let's close the book with this year's Unacclaimed final!

Image

Shiina Ringo-Soretsu (Funeral)

Runner-up Rachmaninoff Group (58,8)
Def. Cristina Branco-Ai Vida 16-5
Def. Joy Division-Dead Souls 11-9
Def. Sufjan Stevens-Djohariah 12-5
Def. Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitiva 10-8

Despite narrowly losing her group, Shiina has proven a viable contender, knocking out strong songs on her way to the final.

Image

Seatbelts/Yoko Kanno-Tank!

Won Rachmaninoff Group (62, 8)
Def. Mutual Benefit-Strong Swimmer 14-5
Def. Stromae-Alors on Danse 16-4
Def. Nicholas Jaar-With Just One Glance You 9-8
Def. Bjork-Verandi 10-8

"Tank!" has been fairly dominant throughout. It gave a strong performance in group play and smashed through the first few knockout rounds to prove a strong finalist.

Voting ends 8 January at 23:59 UTC

I have plans for Unacclaimed when the tourney is over, but for now, let's see who wins. "Tank!" took it in group play, but will the change to the album version of "Soretsu" make the difference? Let's see!

Seatbelts-Tank!

At the end of the day, as good as "Soretsu" is, I can't not vote for "Tank!" I have too much of a relationship with this track to not have it win.

Shiina Ringo.

I would never have guessed these two would make it to the final. I gave a score to each song in the first round. Shiina Ringo got 51%; the other 50%.

Shiina Ringo - Sōretsu (2003) vs. Seatbelts - Tank! (1998)

Yes, the Japanese final! We had 5 Japanese songs/acts on the game, three of them in the now famous Rachmaninoff group. As I told last week, in this group I initially voted for "Tank!" but I changed my mind after listening to the studio version of "Souretsu." Now I'm not going to change my mind again, I'll stay true to Shiina Ringo. I got little to add about it (I really ran out of words after my writing spree of last week) so I'll only play the card of the ORIGINALITY. Yoko Kanno gives new life to a now almost forgotten style, the Big Band Jazz-Blues soundtracks for action movies (Mancini's "Peter Gunn" style). She (and her Seatbelts) jump in this crushing Tank with confidence, energy, craft and freshness but I can't help but think that they are recreating and not creating. On the other hand Shiina Ringo's song is a fascinating trip on a roller coaster of styles, from Hindustani music to Ambient, from Japanese folk to Psychedelic Rock, from polyphony to cacophony, and all this tightly constructed and with her personal stamp. No doubt for me… Go Shiina Go!

P.S. whuntva, will you post at the end the name of the nominators? My two nominations performed really badly, they ended last on their groups on Round 1…

Shiina Ringo - Sōretsu

I'm so pleased my nominee has made it thus far. Tank! is fun, but Sōretsu is truly mindblowing. Beyond that, there is not much more I can say that Honorio has not already eloquently said.

I will mention that if you like this track, you really need to check out the entire album from whence it came (Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana), as it's a masterpiece front to back, and one of the best albums since 2000.

I'm sorry. I may disappoint a few people, but I didn't save the messages from the nominators, and this some of the names are lost in my memory.

I still remember a few and can guess the rest, but basically if you don't se your name, you may step forth to claim it.

This and the previous unacclaimed makes me seriously question why the acclaimed music list is so lacking in Japenese music. Only 3 songs in the list and two of those are Yoko Ono in collaboration with John Lennon. It's a country with many great artists and a few styles completely unique to itself, but they barely get any attention. It's especially weird since Japan gets quite a bit of critical attention in other mediums, but their music is completely overlooked.

Probably has partially to do with the cultural barricade caused by the different alphabets.

I remember a year or two ago there were a bunch of Japanese lists posted, but they may not have had much of an affect due to only EOY songs being added in the most recent site update. Those may have just been album lists, though, but still, Shiina Ringo definitely doesn't seem like an artist who would just slip under the collective radar.

I'm pretty sure I know who nominated which songs (I made a bit of a personal game of working it out in the first weeks). I can put together a list later today if you like. There was only one list which I wasn't sure of - and I think this is maybe because there are two lists from one nominator - possible?

I've always know this track as the intro to "Cowboy Bebop". I've watched the whole anime series quite a few years back. Love both.

Well, this was a cool final.

It was 2-2 early, then Shiina scored five unanswered, but "Tank!" took the last four to make it interesting, but...

By a score of 10-9, our winner is...

Image

Shiina Ringo-Soretsu (Funeral)

She is:

[*]The second woman overall to win.
[*]The second Japanese artist in a row to take it.
[*]The only group runner-up to win. Or in Original Unacclaimed terms, the only one to "lose" a game and still win it all.
[*]The only Japanese-language singer to win (remember, "Stella" was instrumental)
[*]The second track from the 2000s to win.

I have plans for Unacclaimed. I may not continue as is, but I am going to change it. I lost most of the names, but I can give my own list.

Local H-Bound for the Floor
Half Man Half Biscuit-Dickie Davis Eyes
Civil Twilight-Letters from the Sky
Sia-Breathe Me
A Flock of Seagulls-Space Age Love Song
Shriekback-My Spine is the Baseline
Swans-Saved
Cryoshell-Bye Bye Babylon
My Glorious-Minefield
Sevendust-Decay

Great tournament! thank you everyone who voted.

I'm absolutely thrilled that Shiina won, since this makes the second year in a row that my favorite of the entire tournament took the championship. I didn't count the votes myself, but that run by "Tank!" at the end definitely made me nervous. (I do like it, but not nearly as much as the one-of-a-kind "Soretsu.")

Thanks for hosting again, whuntva!

Fantastic tournament, thanks for all that nominated and voted, and a special thanks to whuntva for hosting.

After the last tournament where both my nomination were out in the first round, I was delighted that both my nominations made it to the quarter final; Many Moons (who was the other nominator?) and Verandi.

I'm looking forward to the next incarnation and the next set of amazing music.

Actually, this was sort of my selection. After the tournament had already started, I asked whuntva if I could replace this song with one of my other entries, but it was a little too late then. Soon after, a song by McJagger was deemed ineligible, and when the spot opened up, whuntva told asked McJagger if this song could be selected, and he said yes (thank you McJagger and whuntva :) )

And, yes thank you for hosting this tournament, whuntva. It was a lot of fun, and I'm really looking forward to the next rendition of it.

I think Barry was the second nom for "Space Age Love Song", making him Henry2.

I'm so pleased that Shiina won this, as that song was my nomination. To be honest, I'm kind of shocked (in a good way!) that it won, and that "Stella", also my nom, won last year. My only intent always in nominating songs for Unacclaimed has been to share some of the greatest music I'd heard that has fallen under the radar; it pleases me so much that others enjoyed it, especially to this degree. I never thought they would win as I nominated them, so it was always exciting to see them move on!

whuntva, great job putting this together and rolling it out. As always, I discovered and re-discovered some great new music. :music-listening:
