Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2015: Nominations

Post by Jirin »

For this game which is in its third year, we vote on albums for the year which haven't gotten the attention they deserve. The way it works (For those new to the forum) is that everybody nominates one album. Then, people listen to the albums and rank all the albums they have heard from best to worst. The ranking algorithm is designed so a non-vote neither helps nor hurts an album, so you don't have to worry if you didn't get to listen to all of them.

After a discussion in a previous thread, the nomination criteria this year will be that the album can not be in the top 50 in Mega-Critic, and can not have more than 20 reviews. Nominations will be open through the end of December, and the winner is automatically entered into next year's Best Moderately Acclaimed Album.

For albums that do not have reviews yet but obviously will end up not being eligible, use your judgment whether or not you think the album really is only 'moderately acclaimed'.

Previous winners:
2013: Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace And Magic
2014: Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

One clarification: Make your nominations in the thread, not by PM.

GucciLittlePiggy has nominated Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside.

Good pick Maschine_Man. That was going to be my nomination.

"Froot" by Marina and the Diamonds only has nineteen reviews, so I'll pick that if it's allowed. (Otherwise I would pick "Woman" by Jill Scott.)

Since I don't see it at all on the MegaCritic chart, including the honorable mentions, I will nominate "Tetsuo & Youth" by Lupe Fiasco. (Please let me know if I'm overlooking it. I was so surprised that it wasn't on there at all that I went through the list twice.)

I would definitely second this nom because it is a pretty close to great album that no one talks about. I'm almost sure because Lupe kind of fell off with his past few albums and he got lost in the shuffle but he surprised everyone with this album. Yep great choice.

I don't know what to nominate.

Last year I played with my heart, and I don't think it went too well.

So this year, I'll just play the rest of the nominations as an observer, and I can't really think of anything this year to nominate myself.

Awesome! I wanted to nominate this to get it more attention but I couldn't pass up my number two for the year, so I nominated that instead. Tetsuo & Youth is really a monumental achievement, in my mind. I haven't heard a hip-hop album this ambitious since 2010...

I agree. I always point out it's about exposing others to music they may have missed, not about "winning." I mean, I don't really expect many votes for Built To Spill, but I do think it should be heard, dammit. In other words, go with your heart, whuntva!

That's true. A lot of people seemed to have good feelings about Dan Bern in the main tournament last year, even if he didn't advance.

I have to sit and think on this one, because many of my possible picks could be more than just "moderately" acclaimed.

Is it recent enough that reviews are still coming in?

I guess Mega-Critic doesn't cover EPs. In this case I think FKA Twigs would probably be top 50 if they were eligible. It was best new music on Pitchfork. What do you think?

Romain, do you know of a place where I can hear "Let it Glow"? January's going to be a very busy month for me, so I'm trying to get a head start on the albums I haven't heard. I know I've loved a lot of your recommendations in the past, so I was looking forward to hearing Rover, but I can't find it on Spotify, Rhapsody or YouTube (the only sources I have). Thanks!

Thanks superJamie :romance-kisscheek:
I just buyed the album, because his first album is one of my favorites of the XXI century and the second...idem.

In his youtube proper site, you only have two songs of his second album (Call my name and Let it Glow).

But in fact, if it's too difficult for everybody too find the album, I can take my previous choice "Ibeyi".

I just check Spotify and the entire album is disponible... in France at least.

I will not make you buy an album! If you confirm the album is nowhere in your country, I will take another on. I will let you Ibeyi and nominate "Jeanne Added - Be Sensational" or "Mademoiselle K - Hungry Dirty Baby". I wait your confirm ;-)

I did check Spotify again and "Let It Glow" doesn't appear to be available here in the U.S. (Which seems odd, because Rover does have albums available here on Spotify, including an EP that looks like it was released just a few weeks ago.) If you do still want to nominate "Let It Glow," please do (especially since it sounds like it's available on Spotify in other regions). I've listened to a few Rover songs, and I do like them, so I really don't mind buying it.

Also, if you'd prefer to go with Ibeyi, that's fine too, since I've already nominated "Tetsuo & Youth" by Lupe Fiasco and will stick with that, since it's one of my top 10 albums of the year. (Unfortunately, you might end up really wishing I'd gone with Ibeyi, since "T&Y" is a rap album, and I know you've said in the past that it isn't your favorite type of music. ;) )

And indeed, rap is not my favorite genre, even if I have some appeal for Eminem for example.

Great to see members here appreciating R&B/soul releases, outside of the usual big names. 'Reality Show' in particular really left an impression when I first heard it earlier this year. Will have to go back and check her Jazmine Sullivan's previous albums out sometime...

I really like Hiatus Kaiyote-Choose your Weapon.

Neo-soul and electronica, two genres doing very well right now, are blended nicely here.

What do people think of FKA Twigs - M3LL155X? I'm leaning toward saying it's not eligible because it would be in top 50 in Mega-Critic were EPs eligible.

This implies that if the EP were a more mediocre EP, you would allow it, since it wouldn't be in the top 50 in Mega-Critic.
So I think the question is "Are EP's allowed?" I'm for it, this or any EP.
