Unacclaimed III Round of 32 Part 1

Post by whuntva »

Welcome to the end of the game. The knockout stage.

I put all the songs on two week rotation, the winner of a group from Week 1 faces a runner-up from Week 3, and so on.

Voting rules have changed. Now, each vote vote is worth only one point per song. And it's win-or-go-home; no runners-up.

I think I'll do BleuPanda's approach to tiebreakers, that is move them to a separate topic.

The way we metered out the game this year, it will end just in time for the EOY. But thirty-two songs is still a lot. We have to split the first elimination round in two. This round ends at 11:59 UTC on 4 December.

If any links are broken, please let me know.

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends vs. Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach

Rush-La Villa Strangiato vs. Sufjan Stevens-Djohariah

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley vs. Joy Division-Dead Souls

Cristina Branco-Ai Vida vs. Shiina Ringo-Souretsu ("Funeral")

Thin Lizzy-Don't Believe a Word vs. Half Man Half Biscuit-Dickie Davies Eyes

Janelle Monae-Many Moons vs. Solid Space-10th Planet

The Doors-Touch Me vs. Type O Negative-Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitiva vs. Four Tet-Locked

Happy Voting!

As I understand it the nominator intended the studio version of 'Souretsu ("Funeral")', so this should be linked above. It is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAOQuCm9Gbs.

Koji Kondo - Gerudo Valley (2011) vs. Joy Division - Dead Souls (1980)

Agree with Romain, the strongest pairing was the battle of the ladies, both Cristina and Shiina offered two wonderful songs.

This is a solid tournament. What I really like is there are no obvious frontrunners. That's not to say any of these songs are bad--most are actually very good--but it feels like anyone's game, at least on this side of the bracket.

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends

"Mimi" is sonically interesting, but "Nothing Really Ends" I feel is better written and more meaningful.

Rush-La Villa Strangiato

I give it to Rush, because Sufjan could have trimmed the fat off his song to make it more memorable.

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley

I just felt more of a connection. It probably won't win, but "Gerudo Valley" feels more nostalgic.

Shiina Ringo - Sōretsu

I had a link to the live version because I couldn't find this originally. I think it's really good.

Half Man Half Biscuit - Dickie Davies Eyes

I like the funny song over the harder rock. HMHB's lyrics are so memorable.

Janelle Monáe - Many Moons

Janelle is great. What more can I say.

Type O Negative - Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity

Probably the closest matchup this week. I didn't like it in group play, but it started to grow on me, the bridge is very funny actually.

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La fugitiva

Probably the closest match. Two tracks serving as beautiful examples of their genre. Liked them both, but gave the edge to tango because it was easier to remember as music rather than a homework soundtrack.

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends (6) - Neither of these does much for me

Rush-La Villa Strangiato (10) - I know Rush is going to have a tough time against anything Sufjan, but this is the best they ever did, and that Sufjan EP really disappointed me back when...

Joy Division-Dead Souls (9) - Fantastic song that has a shot to take this

Shiina Ringo-Souretsu ("Funeral") (10) - One of my all-time favorites

Half Man Half Biscuit-Dickie Davies Eyes (7)

Janelle Monae-Many Moons (9) - This could also win it all, the proto-ArchAndroid

Type O Negative-Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity (7)

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitiva (8)

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends is preferred over Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach in part because of the annoying monotone rhythm notes in the first minute of the Siberry song

Rush-La Villa Strangiato - both songs were enjoyable, but the Stevens song seemed a bit too long and repetitive

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley - both songs were enjoyable

Cristina Branco-Ai Vida - both songs were enjoyable, but the Funeral track was not one of my favorites this week.

Thin Lizzy-Don't Believe a Word (could become my favorite of the week after a few more listens) - the HMHB song is also enjoyable enough, but I'm not prioritizing a second listen for the HMHB song

Janelle Monae-Many Moons

The Doors-Touch Me (likely still my favorite of the week)

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitiva

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends vs.Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach - Both songs are nice. This one was close, where either could've edged the other.

Rush-La Villa Strangiato vs. Sufjan Stevens-Djohariah - Another close one.

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley vs. Joy Division-Dead Souls - I've always liked Joy Division

Cristina Branco-Ai Vida vs. Shiina Ringo-Souretsu ("Funeral")

Thin Lizzy-Don't Believe a Word vs. Half Man Half Biscuit-Dickie Davies Eyes - Liked neither song a lot.

Janelle Monae-Many Moons vs. Solid Space-10th Planet - LIke the Janelle Monae song better than I did before.

The Doors-Touch Me vs. Type O Negative-Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity - As much as I love the Doors, this song isn't really one of their best, and therefore and easy choice for me. At any rate the Type O Negative song has been growing on me with every listen, and at this point, is probably in my top 50 of all time. Also, it sounds better without headphones. Best heard with large speakers, but smaller ones may also do.

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitiva vs. Four Tet-Locked - The closest one from this week. Like both the songs quite a bit, and they both would have won all the brackets but the second and the second last.

I actually find these matchups far easier than the group stages with clear winners every time

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends vs. Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach
The more I listen to this song, the more I like it - even if it's far from their best one.

Rush-La Villa Strangiato vs. Sufjan Stevens-Djohariah
I let my tastes for indie music speak there, as I was not really fond of prog music. However, Rush's track is actually pretty enjoyable, but not enough

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley vs. Joy Division-Dead Souls - always been a fan of JD.

Cristina Branco-Ai Vida vs. Shiina Ringo-Souretsu ("Funeral") - I have no idea where this comes from, but I really quite like it.

Thin Lizzy-Don't Believe a Word vs. Half Man Half Biscuit-Dickie Davies Eyes - Classic Rock Track. It will win this time, not sure the next one will be the same...

Janelle Monae-Many Moons vs. Solid Space-10th Planet. No contest, Janelle's is a quality song.

The Doors-Touch Me vs. Type O Negative-Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitivavs. Four Tet-Locked

After the first two weeks I didn't have time to participate. I hope to get back into it in this round. You people don't make it easy on me with the average lenghts of these tracks.

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends vs. Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach
Easy. Nothing Really Ends is quite bland, while Mimi is quite captivating.

Rush-La Villa Strangiato vs. Sufjan Stevens-Djohariah
Very difficult. Two great epics, but Djohariah feels more original.

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley vs. Joy Division-Dead Souls
Gerudo Valley is a big personal favourite. Only one Joy Division Song could beat it and that is the very much acclaimed Love Will Tear Us Apart. Dead Souls doesn't strike me as a particular standout in the the Joy Division discography anyway.

Cristina Branco-Ai Vida vs. Shiina Ringo-Souretsu ("Funeral")
Also easy. I can hear Ai Vida is performed well, but it isn't a type of music I'm particularly drawn towards. Souretsu is a strange hybrid between J-pop, game music and a horror soundtrack. Or do I hear too much in it?

Thin Lizzy-Don't Believe a Word vs. Half Man Half Biscuit-Dickie Davies Eyes
The least interesting match-up. I like both songs, but I would also easily replace both for most tracks here that we are going to lose. Dickie Davis Eyes is more fun and original.

Janelle Monae-Many Moons vs. Solid Space-10th Planet
Extremely easy. Many Moons is just amazing and after Gerudo Valley my favourite track of the week.

The Doors-Touch Me vs. Type O Negative-Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity
Very difficult. Also a nice contrast in rock music. If you would have asked me if Touch Me is actually in the top 6000 songs I would have said yes. Strange, but it qualifies. Type O Negative have a strange metal epic that's both silly and majestic. It's pretty much a tie, but I have to vote for something.

Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - La Fugitiva vs. Four Tet-Locked
Another difficult choice. La Fugitiva is moving and wins therefore, but Four-Tet reminded me of the best of the Metroid Prime soundtrack. It's great too.

Lots of nice discoveries here, especially "Souretso", "La Fugitiva", and "10th Planet".

I think "Many Moons" is pretty easily Janelle's best song. It's probably risen into my top 100 at this point.

Jane Sibbery - "Mimi on the Beach"
Sufjan Stevens - "Djohariah"
Joy Division - "Dead Souls"
Shiina Ringo - "Souretso"
Thin Lizzy - "Don't Believe a Word"
Janelle Monae - "Many Moons"
The Doors - "Touch Me"
Natalia Lafourcade & Kevin Johansen - "La Fugitiva"

Poll is closed!

Most of this week's matchups were fairly decisive. While last year it took awhile for runners-up to win, this time THREE advance right away.

Also, in a repeat of last year's trend, no song with at least ten votes in elimination round lost!

Please check for errors!

dEUS-Nothing Really Ends: 13
Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach: 8

Rush-La Villa Strangiato: 7
Sufjan Stevens-Djohariah: 14

Koji Kondo-Gerudo Valley: 6
Joy Division-Dead Souls: 15

Cristina Branco-Ai Vida: 5

Updated vote counts from Honorio. Fortunately, the actual winners were still the same.

Part 2 will be up shortly.

^^No Problem.

I thought I could just do a tally again, given that each vote was worth less this time around, but I appreciate any help I get.
