Unacclaimed III Group Stage, Week 3

Post by whuntva »

Last week was our closest one yet this tournament. knowing you guys, there will certainly be more.

Rank the songs in each group 1-4, with four points going to the top song, and one for the bottom. The Top TWO from each grouping advance. Ties are broken by first-place votes. Even if both songs advance, ties need to be broken for seeding reasons in the next round.

If you want to vote for only one group, you may.

Comments are strongly encouraged but not required.

Poll closes at 11: 59 pm UTC on October 23

STRAVINSKY

Morphine-Good
Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach
Noa-Mishaela
The National-Santa Clara

What can I say? I love Morphine and this groovy track. I wish Mark Sandman were still around kicking it like this. It makes me wish I'd nominated this album for Moderately instead of the somewhat more obscure (though my personal preference) Like Swimming.

"Mimi" was an interesting experience. Six minutes, but surprisingly not boring. "Mishaela" took its time, but built up into something better. This seems like a safe bet to advance, although I've been wrong about this sort of thing before.

It seems so weird for me to put a National song at the bottom, especially after nominating their own "Exile (Vilify)" last year, but this song didn't impress me all that much with either lyrics or orchestration.

COPLAND

Joy Division-Dead Souls
Stromae-Alors on Danse
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
JK and Co.-Fly

These were all some of the better tracks this tourney.

Joy Division did not disappoint. This track is dark and broody, but instrumentation works great to its favor. I bet Interpol was listening.

Stromae delivers a good dance track. He's another artist that demands more discovery. Just like...

Tages, who deliver a Beatles-esque pop tune from Sweden! Apparently, they were one of the first psychedelic bands. I have to check into them more.

"Fly" wasn't bad, in fact reminiscent of Radiohead's "Codex", but it wasn't quite up to par with the rest of the group.

Morphine-Good - An easy choice for me. A really nice song, that appears basic on the surface, but with the bass lines combined with the primal drums, accented by the saxophone, it is actually pretty complex.

Mimi on the Beach took a few listens for me to warm to it. But this is an art pop epic and has so much packed into its 7 minutes - great stuff.Santa Clara is leftover material from Boxer - and I’d say still better than their more recent material. Morphine’s ‘Good’ is an interesting, soulful jazz-rock number - but it felt like it was going to build into something more. ‘Mishaela’ is OK; Now, I also happened to listen to some other songs from Noa (e.g. Explain the Night, Now Forget) - they would have certainly given others in this group more of a run for their money.

AARON COPLAND GROUP
JK and Co.-Fly
Stromae-Alors an Danse
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
Joy Division-Dead Souls

‘Fly’ is fantastic - sounds like what would come out of putting Radiohead and '67/'68 Beatles in a blender. Well ahead of the rest of the group.

This was a strange group for me. Given the artists and styles, I would've anticipated liking every one of these songs more than I did. Certainly, none are bad; but none struck a personal chord with me, either.

AARON COPLAND GROUP
Joy Division-Dead Souls
Stromae-Alors an Danse
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
JK and Co.-Fly

A very good Joy Division song runs away with this one, though I have been intrigued by Stromae over the past year since discovering him on the "Hunger Games" soundtrack. (On a side note, I've often wondered if I were to calculate all my favorites from Joy Division, New Order, and the underrated Electronic, if Bernard Sumner might not end up as my all-time favorite artist. However, since I can barely calculate my age, this is something that will probably never happen...)

Noa brings an idiosyncratic blend of Middle Eastern folk music and pop, and proves that Hebrew is a musical language. Morphine builds up slowly with repetitive motifs and a nice combination of bass, drums and saxophone.

AARON COPLAND GROUP
1. Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
2. JK and Co.-Fly
3. Joy Division-Dead Souls

Tages is an amiable pop song from the sixties with lyrics about an unwanted pregnancy. JK and Co. sounds like they've had a little too much LSD: psychedelic rock, with a sound that reminds me of "A Day in the Life".

AARON COPLAND GROUP

Joy Division-Dead Souls - The song is rather interesting. The lyrics aren't as good as a lot of the other Joy Division songs, but are still pretty good. The music isn't spectacular, but still intriguing. The jazzy bass line towards the end is possibly my favorite part.
JK and Co.-Fly - The production is marvelous, and the music is also, at times, psychedelic. Not too special, but interesting enough.
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now - It is a fine pop song, but sounds too much like a lot of the other pop songs in that era. It isn't very unique, or memorable, except for the lyrics, which aren't great either.
Stromae-Alors an Danse - It is not a bad dance song, but I don't particularly like it. It sounds slightly generic, even. The lyrics are not bad though, and I particularly like the end part, but I'm not too fond of the vocal delivery. The beat during the refrain is catchy enough, though.

I really like Morphine's sound. For those who aren't familiar with them but like this song I really recommend "Buena".

AARON COPLAND GROUP
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
Stromae-Alors an Danse
Joy Division-Dead Souls
JK and Co.-Fly

As others have said, this is a strong group. My nomination "She's Having a Baby Now" probably won't make it to the next round, although receiving some fine comments. I hoped it would do really well, as I think it beats almost every Beatles song in terms of both music and daring lyrics. What could beat that, ha!

On the contrary, I'm surprised to see "Alors an Danse" do so well. It has a RYM rating of 2.69. But apparently we have more room for dance/house music in this forum and that makes me happy.

I seem to be out of step in preferring STRAVINSKY to COPLAND. Mimi clinches it with it's cryptic outsider lyrics and quirky (if not entirely original) production.

AARON COPLAND GROUP
Joy Division-Dead Souls
JK and Co.-Fly
Stromae-Alors an Danse
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now

My familiarity with Dead Souls makes this an unfair contest, but the other three fail to transcend their influences.

IGOR STRAVINSKY GROUP
Morphine-Good
Ooh the vibe of this piece is amazing. The percussion and sax together work amazingly.
Noa-Mishaela
This woman's voice is incredible and the melody resonates in the way that only folksongs can.
Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach
The intro and the chorus are nice, the rest of the song not so much.
The National-Santa Clara
The National have never perfectly stood out to me with the exception of the last Unacclaimed's "Exile (Vilify)". This song is no exception

AARON COPLAND GROUP
JK and Co.-Fly
Late period Beatles sound, very atmospheric
Stromae-Alors an Danse
Can't explain it, but I adored this song. I wish they'd play it at a party here in the states.
Joy Division-Dead Souls
Solid song, relatively unremarkable.
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
I find the chorus of this song really unlistenable

Quite impressed by the quality of this group. Morphine was always going to take it, with a song in the line of their excellent album "Yes"

AARON COPLAND GROUP
1. Joy Division : Dead Souls
2. Stromae-Alors an Danse
3. Tages-She's Having a Baby Now
4. JK and Co.-Fl

Very familiar with Dead Souls, a brilliant JD song, and the easy winner of this group. I am particularly surprised by Stromae. I heard all the hype (and bloody hell Papa t ou) but this song is actually worth a listen. The two others are not worth much, sadly.

3. Mishaela
4. Good

Copland:
1. Alors an danse
2. Dead Souls

4. She's Having a Baby Now

Stromae is so good. Racine Carree needs to get more love. I'd also probably take all 4 songs from group 2 over group 1.

STRAVINSKY:
1. Mishaela - That amazing voice and those intricate instrumental arrangements really put me at ease. I should listen to this type of stuff more often.
2. Mimi on the Beach - This type of art pop is always great, too.
3. Good - A concise song with a nice groove.
4. Santa Clara - Oh no, its The National! They're one of those acclaimed acts I can't get much behind. Their song in the last poll grew on me, but the qualities of that I really liked aren't here.

COPLAND:
1. Alors on Danse - The lyrics are actually quite depressing here. Do French speakers actually notice that on first listen? Still, this is a real jam, if a bit derivative.
2. She's Having a Baby Now - It's got that great rhythm section, cool vocal harmonies, great guitar sounds, psychedelic soundscapes – all the best stuff about '60s psychedelic pop. But right now, I'd rather dance.
3. Dead Souls - I'm often a bit weary around Joy Division, but the band is really powerful here, and Ian Curtis's vocals fit well.
4. Fly - Feels almost ahead of its time, but a bit too Radiohead-ish for its own good.
Splish splash, I was raking in the cash

Good catch, Honorio.

What's funny is I actually spelled it correctly in my vote.

Votes are closed. Please check for errors. This week was close!

STRAVINSKY GROUP

Morphine-Good (53, 8)
Jane Siberry-Mimi on the Beach (43, 3)
---
The National-Santa Clara (42, 4)
Noa-Mishaela (33, 2)

Morphine led by a good amount most of the way, even after its support petered off by week's end.

Siberry advanced only by the last vote. No miracle run for The National this year, as they come up one point short.

COPLAND GROUP

Stromae-Alors on Danse (49, 6)
Joy Division-Dead Souls (46, 5)
---
JK and Co.-Fly (37, 3)
Tages-She's Having a Baby Now (37, 2)

Stromae pulled ahead of Joy Division only yesterday, though both songs led the pack.

As for Matchups, from the Stravinsky, Jane Siberry plays dEUS, Morphine plays Cortijo and his Time Machine

From the Copland, Stromae plays Prince, Joy Division takes on Koji Kondo
