Could you please remind me about which formula you are using. I'm surprised that it's possible to get such a high rating with only 7 reviews. Doesn't the formula have a "downrating term" to adjust for the number of ratings? I think we have discussed before that you are using something like...

adjusted score = (average score * number of ratings + midscore * arbitrary number) / (number of ratings + arbitrary number)

What is midscore (50?) and "arbitrary number"?

If the calculation is correct, I think it really raises the question about the 7 reviews limit. I find it difficult to understand that an album can go from not deserving to be mentioned to fifth place because of a single seventh review. I think albums should be able to enter the chart with fewer reviews than 7, and if it's too easy for albums with few reviews to enter the chart then the formula needs to be adjusted.

Having said that, these are only my recommendations. It is definitely your list, and you decide exactly how you want to handle it.

Score: Average score + ((Number of ratings - 21)/3)

It may seem bad formula but I think it's appropriate. The mean scores of the album is 21 (approximately). The albums that have more qualifications than 21, increase the score. Albums with less, reduce the score.


I need the reference number of grades is a fixed number (in this case 21). Last year did not use 21 but the average scores, but then this number was variable and, therefore, each update of MCCH supposed changes in many albums: more work, more errors.

That's a reasonable formula if you want the math to be simple. If you wanted to get more technical and didn't have to do calculation by hand something that approximates regression toward the mean would work well.

For example, (Mean) + (Score - mean) * (1 - 1/(sqrt(reviews)))

With this formula, if the average review was 70, and an album got a 90 it'd scale like this:

1 review: 70
2 reviews: 75.85
5 reviews: 81.05
10 reviews: 83.67
15 reviews: 84.83
20 reviews: 85.52
25 reviews: 86
50 reviews: 87.17
