Hip Hop/Rap Recommendations

Post by jimmyj »

Since there seemed to be some interest in this topic in the All time song poll, I will start this off since this is by far my most favorite genre.

I will start off with a great classic.
Boogie Down Productions "Criminal Minded"

This is the album that really got me hooked on Hip hop music.
KRS one lyrics, minimal Scott La Rock production.
So many classic Hip hop songs on this album. This was kind of the precursor to East Coast gansta rap.

I still remember listening to this as a kid, and wondering how anyone could not love this music, and rap music as a whole.

Here's a chronological list of some of my favorites, lumped by year. A lot of '80s and '90s stuff -- including, yes, the pop rap. It looks like my axis point is 1992, but so, I'm not sure what if anything here is considered obscure. Streight Up Menace? Cypress Hill's How I Could Just...? Newcleus's Jam On It? (I don't exactly lean toward early '80s stuff, but I really liked this one.) I don't think most people have heard Lil Rob's Summer Nights. Some beats I could hear all day, like You Gots to Chill, I Got 5 on It, Passin' Me By, and The Message (whose beat is on here twice).

Kurtis Blow - The Breaks

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five feat. Melle Mel and Duke Bootee - The Message

Stephen Colbert: You know more than I do about this, because you’re in the rap world. A lot of times it’ll say “feat.” You know, like … “Rihanna ‘feat’ Pitbull,” or something like that. It often says “feat” Pitbull. I think -- Pitbull’s first name might actually be “feat.”
Have you ever did “feat Marshall Mathers”? Have you ever “feat”ed?
Marshall Mathers: I have “feat”ed.
Stephen Colbert: What does it mean? When you are “feat”ing … What is this “feat”?
Marshall Mathers: Featuring.
Stephen Colbert: Oh, featuring, okay.

Live in Phoenix wrote:The Source, the long-running hip-hop magazine, once made a list of the 151 greatest hip-hop songs.

(Obviously #9 here is Fuck Tha Police)
https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Matica/1 ... he_source/
For those who go to the link and don't get it, as I didn't, #9 on the list as posted to RYM is "The Lily Song" by Rock Slope - a fictitious song by a fictitious band that is, apparently, a long-running RYM inside joke that I just don't comprehend at all (which is what makes it an inside joke, of course).

For those more steeped in RYM than I am, why it it supposed to be "obvious" that the Rock Slope listing is a substitute for "Fuck Tha Police"? What am I missing?

For those who go to the link and don't get it, as I didn't, #9 on the list as posted to RYM is "The Lily Song" by Rock Slope - a fictitious song by a fictitious band that is, apparently, a long-running RYM inside joke that I just don't comprehend at all (which is what makes it an inside joke, of course).

For those more steeped in RYM than I am, why it it supposed to be "obvious" that the Rock Slope listing is a substitute for "Fuck Tha Police"? What am I missing?
Oh, I was going by the Source's comments that had been transcribed: "What's gangsta? Getting a cease and desist letter from the FBI." I've always thought of N.W.A. getting a letter from the FBI as one of those legendary moments in rap history.

There are a couple of other webpages that have posted the Source list (though with worse spelling), with N.W.A. correctly at #9.

Actually I don't know what Rock Slope is about ... Is that like Toad the Wet Sprocket, when it was still a Monty Python joke?

Re: Hip Hop/Rap Recommendations

Post by Pierre »

Wow, this thread has barely started and it's already pretty crowded with long lists of recommendations... I'll try to make playlists for all those later on, but I'm not sure I'll be able to listen to all that.

Anyway, I wondered how you guys are going to handle trip-hop? So far, it has not been discussed as far as I've seen, but I hardly think I'll be able to submit a list if I don't add some... Does someone else plan to add some Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead or others?

Sorry I got carried away with my lists which I'm still not completely done with but that shows my love of hip-hop. It's the first genre of music I loved growing up and even though I listen and love all kinds of music now I still have to return to where it all started for me. Also Pierre, I provided a link to most of the songs that I listed and that site has mixtapes you can download for every year of hip-hop starting in 1979. If you love hip-hop or just want to start in a certain era those mixtapes are great.

Sorry, I didn't notice your link had mixtapes! That will surely help. The fact is, my musical road is the exact opposite of yours, I was born from a roots and 60s-folk music loving family in the French countryside and it actually took me years to get around to like hip-hop... Essentially because the sound was totally alien to what I grew up with, and so were the lyrical matters. These last years I've been feeling more and more attracted to this genre (with electronic music) and I'm taking this opportunity to explore it deeper with pleasure! Oh, and don't take my remark on the French countryside as the norm - one of the current most acclaimed acts in French hip-hop, Orelsan, actually comes from my very own region :D

I think I'm going to follow the timeline of hip-hop from the origins (starting with the Last Poets - I like to be exhaustive) to fill the holes in my knowledge; I know my classics, but your lists show me that I still have a lot to learn. One favourite though, from the early years that you didn't include:

J. Walter Negro and the Loose Jointz - Shoot the Pump:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnB6WZvi0jU

I'll try to come back later to do more recommendations, mostly for hip-hop in the French and Spanish languages. For the former, maybe Nassim will have a better knowledge than me though.

Not too sure lot of people look after recommandations when there are so many.

So here are my pick of 11 lesser known songs I love :

Wu-Tang - I Can't Go To Sleep
Enter the Wu-Tang is rightfully seen as a classic but that doesn't mean there aren't some other great songs in the Wu catalog, and that one is wonderful. Based on Isaac Hayes sample, and with a chorus sung by Isaac himself, it's a deep and heartfelt song against violence. Ghostface's verse is great as usual and it's RZA who completely nails it, seemingly about to break down at any time.

Souls of Mischief - 93 Til Infinity
"Right now, we gonna up you on how we just chill", and they sure too... that's a cool and relax song and aside for "A Plus if famous, so get the anus" the worldplay is really fun and the flow of every rappers very natural

The Roots - The OtherSide
I love this song, but it's the piano line that sells it the best.

The Streets - Turn the Page
I'm a tad worried UK won't get its due on this poll but the Streets and Dizzee Rascal should be featured heavily.
I really think the acclaimed Streets songs are not the right ones though, and don't understand how this fantastic call to arm is always overlooked. Stand by me my apprentice, be brave, clenched fists.

Puppetmastaz - The Bigger The Better
Puppetmastaz will be the first name to appear 3 times in my album list (yes, before Kanye West and Beastie Boys) so it's hard for me to pick one songs. Halfway between parody and hommage, this huge crew (about 15 rappers, or at least characters) has such a wide range of beats and voices that no song can truly represent them, so I picked one where at least you can be introduced to the 3 most important members of the crew : Mr Maloke, Wizard the Lizard (who's a frog) and Snuggles the Bunny.

Spank Rock - Bump
With netjade gone, I won't have much support in voting for Spank Rock, but his first album is still an anomaly with it's barebone beats. Bump is one of my favorite tracks for running with it's steady beat, it's pure rush of energy elevated by a killer verse from Amanda Blank, Spank Rock can be crude (see the also awesome Sweet Talk) but at this game, the lady wins.

M.O.P. feat Busta Rhymes, Teflon and Lil Kim - Ante Up (remix)
The original Ante Up is pretty cool, the remix is 3 minutes and a half of everybody burning down everything around them, blasting huge lines after huge lines on a beat as devastating as ever. Party rap at its best.

Jurassic 5 - Jurass Finish First
A simple joyful and bouncy beats through which MCs happily sail, that's all it takes. Happy rap for happy people.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill
(Anti?)-hipster hip-hop, Scroobius Pip preaches hilarious instructions over a bouncy electronic beat. The album was a huge disappointment, but that one stood the test of time.

Aesop Rock - Daylight
Should at least get votes for that part :
"Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman
You only call her a bitch because she won't let you get that pussy
Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests
Or maybe you're just an asshole who couldn't sweet talk the princess"

El-P - The Overly Dramatic Truth
Whether solo or with Run the Jewels, El-P will feature heavily on my list, I can safely call him my favorite producer by now. This actually might be its best production, though its hard to pick just one.

If you're willing to dig French hip-hop, here are 3 more, once you of course have listened to IAM's Demain C'est Loin, my favorite French song ever :

Le Klub des Loosers - Sous Le Signe du V
Fuzati might be the worst MC you've ever heard, but he has some of the sharpest lyrics ever... that track produced by Air is probably his best, completely wrecking the people from Versailles, the city he is from and stronghold of French most traditionalist people.

MC Solaar - Séquelles
MC Solaar is the one who made hip-hop cool in France and his first 2 albums are full of great songs. He's a wordsmith that play with words meanings and forms and it doesn't hurt that he sometimes was backed up by great beats. See also Le Nouveau Western who samples Serge Gainsbourg's Bonnie and Clyde (coincidentally, this video shows Charlotte, Serge's daughter)

Shurik'n - Lettre
At the game of solo albums from IAM members, Akhenaton won with the fantastic Métèque et Mat, but as far as the best song goes, Shurik'n gets the gold with this earnest song, letter from a dying man to his grandson. One of the most beautiful French songs ever, any genre included.

:? Why wouldn't they. The more options you have the more you have to pick from. This forum is seriously lacking in hip hop recommendations so giving a list of each year/decade gives people an idea of what there is that is out there. It seems like all people do on this forum is bitch and complain about something. Just completely unnecessary just post your list and keep it moving. So what if I have a lot of songs/albums listed. There isn't a limit on how many you can have. I can and will say what you posted isn't close to enough.

It's a great resource, bootsy. Thanks for typing all that up. It is a bit overwhelming, though - even just to look at. I think it would help if maybe you starred one from each year - either your favorite or the one you think is most undervalued, or something like that. Or make a cliffs notes version with a ranked top twenty for each decade or half-decade, just so people have a place to start exploring, and then they can revert to your longer lists if they like what they're hearing.

It's not. I separated it out by years and decades. I've seen many lists in other threads on this site with lists like that. There is nothing wrong with the way it looks. Jeez. Either read it or don't. I also provided a link to the mixtapes that are the source of the songs list. You people are such whiners. all this talk about 'we need a hip hop thread, we need a hip hop thread with a list of songs and albums'. Well here it is and people like you still complain about it. This thread deserves more than a list with 5 songs or 10 songs. That's some crap to do to a genre that's been around for 30+ years.

I like your list, Greg, though I noticed RTJ2 didn't make your top ten of last year. What didn't you like about it or have you just not listened yet?

It's pretty far away from hip hop, that's all. But I'm all for including it; it's my 5th fav album of all time. I guess this answers my question whether some stuff by Drake or like Gorillaz is eligible.

It's not pretty far away from hip hop. It still has the hip hop sound and he's still at the root a hip hop artist. I've included it. I'm not sure why Drake wouldn't be eligible. He hasn't made anything that makes me think 'not hip hop'. Does he have some non hip hop songs? Sure obviously but he is still hip hop. Gorillaz certain songs I think could be included but entire albums probably not. At least I don't think they should be included. If you want to include them then go for it. That is why the title of this thread is 'Hip Hop/Rap Recommendations'.

I think there's more rapping on Gorillaz albums than 808s and Heartbreak, so that's why I'm definitely including them.

A good way of determining eligibility could be is there hip hop or rap mentioned on RYM including the subgenres. 808s and Heartbreak does have pop rap mentioned.

I'm far from the best person to determine whether something should be hip hop/rap or not. But I think if we are to progress to a poll we do need an agreed authoritative source. I agree that the best source (at least that I've seen) is RYM. I'd suggest using primary genres only as a guide though. [edit (missed a sentence): Secondary genres would be, I think, too inclusive] For albums it often means a single song will be within that genre. And for songs, you'd have ones like Beck's "Loser" being included as Hip Hop - which while has Hip Hop elements, it isn't the foundation for the song. And surely including something like "Loser" in a Hip Hop poll defeats the point a bit.

Additionally, I saw some earlier discussion on whether Trip-Hop should be included. I'd propose that here we stick to the RYM definition again which puts Trip Hop in as a subgenre of Electronic, rather than Hip Hop.

What do others think? Should we stick with RYM definitions or is there somewhere else to help us work out eligibility?

P.S. I've been eagerly making my way through many of the playlists above, so thanks to all that have helped me explore the genre.

I agree with this. I don't want this to get to a point where we including a song that had some hip hop in it or an album that had a couple of hip hop songs. When i look at hip hop lists I don't see very many if any at all that have the Gorillaz on it. They aren't primarily hip hop. They have elements of it but not primarily hip hop. I did debate a little whether to include 808s & Heartbreaks in my list and eventually did because Kanye at his roots is a hip hop artist. He went away from it on that album but the hip hop foundation is still there for me.

I agree with using RYM as a guide for what is hip hop or not, as I was thinking about this myself. As far as trip hop goes, I say we oughtn't include it. I was initially leaning toward including it but I realized that a great many songs in the genre just don't "feel hip hop" to me. I know a vague feeling probably isn't good for determining if the genre is eligible or not but I think a lot of people would agree with me. I think it would just raise too many debates if we included it.

Anyone else have any list or recommendations. I'm trying to keep this topic from slipping. There seems like there were a few more hip hop heads on this board. Even if you aren't list some of your favorites or semi-favorites that you really like. I don't want this to lose too much steam.

Re: Hip Hop/Rap Recommendations

Post by Jeff »

I'm going to have a go at this. I hope it's not too long. I'm doing songs, rather than albums. My recommendations focus specifically on Southern hip hop since I am not seeing the region as well-represented as the coasts thus far. (Midwest hip hop will need to find another champion I guess.) I think that Southern hip hop tends to have much stronger production than East Coast and West Coast hip hop. Not saying those sounds have not produced some great music (certainly they have), just that they can get a bit bland in a way Southern hip hop beats do not. Granted, Southern rap has some dicey lyrics, but I prefer beats anyway. Lest anyone accuse me of having a regional bias, I'm from California. 8-)

I have divided it up by cities. The numbers do not indicate a ranking. They just make it easier for me to refer to the tracks in my descriptions without taking up too much space.

Miami
1. 2 Live Crew - 2 Live Is What We Are (word)
2. Quad City DJ's - Come On and Ride It (the Train)
3. Quad City DJ's - Space Jam
Honestly, most of the Miami Bass stuff doesn't mean too much to me. I see it as akin to early electro: important, but not particularly good. That said, 2 Live Crew can turn in some good beats. Likewise, Quad City DJ's were kind of great, even if they were only around for a year or so.

Houston
1. Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks On Me
2. Scarface - I See a Man Die
3. Eightball and MJG - Space Age Pimpin'
4. UGK - Murder
5. UGK - Int'l Player's Anthem (I Choose You)
6. Big Mike - Having Thangs
7. Big Moe - City of Syrup
8. DJ Screw - 3 N the Mornin
After Miami, Houston was the next Southern city to attract national attention. 1-2 represent the city's more gangsta rap proclivities. These aren't celebrations though; more like stark examinations of the ramifications of the lifestyle. 3-7 are mostly about either pimping or lean and are more characteristic of the Houston sound. 5 is one of my absolute favorite songs, with UGK joined by OutKast with production by DJ Paul and Juicy J of Three-Six Mafia. 7 is one of the most upbeat rap songs out there. DJ Screw deserves a shoutout since he defined the Houston sound more than anyone else, but it's difficult to isolate individual tracks from his mixes. 8 is the one I'll pick.

Memphis
1. Three-Six Mafia - Mystic Stylez
2. Three-Six Mafia - Stay Fly
3. Koopster Knicca - Stash Pot
4. Kingpin Skinny Pimp - Ya'll Ain't No Killaz
5. Project Pat - Choices
6. Al Kapone - Sinsta Funk
7. Graveyard Productions - No One Can Save You
8. Spaceghostpurrp - The Black God
9. Starlito & Don Trip - Pray for Me
10. Starlito & Don Trip - Leash on Life
Hip hop turns to the dark side. If you were offended by some of dd Future's shtick, turn away. However, if you do you will miss out on some of the absolute best productions in hip hop. Three-Six Mafia deserve special notice for having female members (La Chat and Gangster Boo, the latter probably familiar to Run the Jewels fans), a rarity among hip hop collectives. "Da Summer" can make for a nice alternative if 1-2 aren't doing anything for you, being a more chill affair. 1-5 are all associated with DJ Paul and Juicy J's Three-Six Mafia, who dominate Memphis rap to such an extent that it can be difficult to find the stuff that they didn't produce. 6-7 are some examples of non-Three-Six Memphis rap (though some poorly-researched corners of the internet credit DJ Paul for producing 7, but they're wrong). 8 is from Miami, but carries on the Memphis sound. 9 and 10 make for nice palate cleansers if it gets too bleak for you, but "bleak" is a relative term. In any event, Starlito & Don Trip are more prone to reflection and social commentary and have a fondness of violins.

New Orleans
1. DJ Jubilee - Get Ready, Ready!
2. Ricky B - Shake fo Ya Hood
3. UNLV - Local 580
4. Juvenile - Back that Azz Up
5. Juvenile - Ha
6. Mystikal - Shake Ya Ass
7. Lil Wayne - Georgia Bush
8. Lil Wayne - I Feel Like Dying
1-3 are examples of bounce, a high energy style of hip hop that emerged from New Orleans. 1-2 are both good, clean fun (well, 2 uses some variant of "fuck" every-other word, but is otherwise not graphic in the least). They both fill me with pure joy when I hear them. 3 takes bounce into darker territory (the acronym stands for Uptown Niggas Livin Violently, in case you want an indicator of what you're in for). 3-5 are produced by Mannie Fresh, who is basically the Dr. Dre of New Orleans. I go back and forth on whether I prefer 4 or 5, so try both! 5 features a (very) young Lil Wayne and an off-kilter verse from Mannie himself. Mystikal barks as much as he raps, but it works either way. I assume some familiarity with Lil Wayne's hits, so 7-8 highlight stuff from his plethora of mixtapes. 8 is sort of like proto-cloud rap and even people who hate Lil Wayne should look into it since it sounds like nothing else he's done. 7 I have a strong emotional connection to. I lived in New Orleans for four years and grew very fond of the city and its people. I was not around for Katrina, having graduated college about two years prior. Even though I was not there, seeing the aftermath of the storm was difficult for me. Out of all the responses I saw to Katrina, this one I think captured the outrage best. I hate that he couldn't think of a better way to insult George Bush than calling him a girl's name (at best, it's like he's a five-year old on a playground; at worst, he comes off like a misogynist), but I guess the sample he uses justifies it to some extent. Even without the personal connection, Wayne goes HARD here. I know his recent missteps have made him a joke to some people, but few can match his flow on this track.

Atlanta
1. Arrested Development - Tennessee
2. Goodie Mob - Goodie Bag
3. OutKast - The Whole World
4. Big Boi - Shutterbug
5. Killer Mike - Big Beast
6. Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boys - Get Low
7. Ludacris - Southern Hospitality
8. T.I. - What You Know
9. Rick Ross - B.M.F.
10. Waka Flocka Flame - Hard in da Paint
11. Gucci Mane - Bird Flu (Salem Remix)
12. Rich Homie Quan - Type of Way
13. Future - Move that Dope
The present de facto capital of hip hop. 1-3 are indicative of early Atlanta rap's more relaxed and open atmosphere. 2 is a must for Cee-Lo Green fans, or just those interested in soulful hip hop. OutKast is my favorite musical group (only bested by Sun Ra and John Cage overall), so I could easily come up with a top 50 list of just OutKast songs. I won't though, since they are fairly popular on the forum. 3 is not my favorite OutKast song (that would be "Rosa Parks") but it frequently gets ignored since it wasn't on any of their studio albums. It's classic OutKast, with some stellar rapping from a young(ish) Killer Mike. 4-5 are probably well-known around these parts, but warrant mentions anyway. 6-7 are representative of the call-and-response technique found in black churches popping up in hip hop. Avoid both if you hate fun. 8-13 are here to broadly showcase modern, trap-influenced Atlanta hip hop. T.I. is essentially the style's originator, and 8 is him taking his trap stylings to the mainstream with great effect. 9 is from Miami, but (like almost all modern rappers) fits in seamlessly with the Atlanta style. 11 is a remix by witchhouse group Salem that somehow makes Gucci sound even more Southern (despite Salem being from Michigan). 12-13 are recent favorites of mine.

Other Southern
1. David Banner - Cadillac on '22s
2. Big K.R.I.T. - Return of 4eva
3. Rae Sremmurd - No Flex Zone
4. Little Brother - Still Lives Though
5. Nappy Roots - Awnaw
6. CunninLynguists - Mic Like a Memory
7. CunninLynguists - Beautiful Girl
8. Jay-Z - Big Pimpin'
A grab bag from Mississippi to North Carolina to Kentucky to New York (!). 1 is a must for those that only know Banner for his party songs. He says he can't do songs like this more often because they don't sell. 2 is an up-and-comer who is well-known in rap circles but has yet to breakthrough to the mainstream, even though he was expected to by now. 3 was one of last year's biggest rap hits, and one I adore. 4 is recommended for those who want some good lyricism and a certain sense of social or political engagement in their hip hop. It's crazy underrated. 5 bites OutKast's style pretty hard at times, but it's good all the same. Just one more group OutKast fans can enjoy. 6-7 are a case of good music, bad name. Despite the schoolyard pun, the group evolved into some of the more clever lyricists in music. I find it odd that jazz rap never took hold in the South (seeing as how that's where jazz originally came from), but CunninLynguists provide the occasional template for it. 8 is a 1999 track from Jay-Z that has him shrewdly getting on board with two of the trends that dominated mainstream music in the 2000s: Southern hip hop and Timbaland beats. Jay becomes an afterthought in his own track, with UGK's Bun B. and Pimp C. turning in verses significantly better than his own and Timbaland offering up one of his most iconic productions.

That's it for me. My fear now is that I'll forget all the non-Southern hip hop I like when it comes time to submit a list.

Nothing can be longer than my lists. Anyway great contribution. Thanks

For albums it often means a single song will be within that genre.

You know, when the poll was initially brought up in the all-time songs poll results, people started asking how we should define hip-hop, and ultimately Listyguy said that it should be up to each participant to decide whether the song or album he includes is hip-hop or not; no matter what, if too many people disagree, it wouldn't end up in the final results anyway since nobody else were going to vote for it. When I asked about trip-hop, it was just to get a general idea of whether other people were going to vote for the genre; not to start again a debate on whether it should be forbidden or not. I've checked the RYM primary genres to see if I would agree with them as the definitive source, and guess what, I don't. I was fine with the initial idea that people had a free choice, the raising of some prohibitions has cooled me down greatly.

So, I was indeed going to put some tracks by Massive Attack, Tricky, Gorillaz, Beck, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron or Malcolm McLaren in my eventual list. Tracks like "Buffalo Gals", "Give It Away" or "Clint Eastwood" apparently pass the test because the singles feature "hip-hop" or something that ends with "rap" as primary genres, but "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "Loser", "Where It's At" or The Last Poets' "Mean Machine" don't. And I'm not even talking about the albums... In these conditions I guess I'll just have to cancel my contribution to this poll. It's getting way too restrictive.

My son is not as interested in music as he is in comedy and he introduced me to L'il Dicky (David Burd) last night and it was very entertaining.
