174. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice

I've never understood why this song wasn't just an automatic top 50 entry. Everyone knows it, and it really is on par with Good Vibrations and God Only Knows in just about every way (that being said, I do have GOK ranked about 50 spots higher). 731 AM rank is just puzzling.

168. Aphex Twin - Windowlicker

I can't remember this song ever performing well in our forum polls, so fun to see it up here.

165. The Temptations - My Girl

This has always been one of my least favorite of the big Motown hits. I just don't really see what's special about it.

161. ABBA - Dancing Queen

It was only recently that I admitted to myself that I like this song. That drumbeat!

159. TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me

This is a glorious song, the pinnacle of one of the best bands of the last 15 years. Glad to see its appeal hasn't slipped ever as TVotR aren't lighting up the end of year polls anymore.

152. Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr.

This has always been a forum staple, but I'd take at least 5-6 songs on Illinois over it.

133. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man

Very fun song and a cool placement. This really wasn't on our list at all last time?

123. Lou Reed - Perfect Day

I've always been a fan of this song, but there was something about Lou Reed's death that makes it even more emotionally resonant. I think this one should be more highly acclaimed than "Walk on the Wild Side" in time, but both are great.

119. Roy Orbison - In Dreams

I've moved this up from 110 to top 50 since the poll closed. This song is just sublime.

117. Robert Wyatt - Sea Song

You picked the right quote! "Your madness fits in nicely with my own" is one of my favorite one-liners in music.

105. Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl

Still never understand how this outranks every song from Astral Weeks. How could you like this more than "Sweet Thing", one of the greatest love songs ever!

102. Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

I have grown tired of many of the classic rock staples that will rank in the top 100, but this song never gets old for some reason. Kind of a cool surprise to see it up here!

101. Kanye West - Runaway

So glad "Midnight City" will get revenge after narrowly losing to "Runaway" for the top spot in the 2010-2014 poll.

I like how the each one voted for a different song (except for 2 "Teen Spirit" and "Friends" votes) and I particularly applaud the 3 unranked #1 votes, 2 of which I haven't heard. But by looking at the list so far, we can find somebody who share the same preference in music. In my case, whenever my name comes up as a top voter of a particular song, Bruno is usually right beside me. Heck his #1 song is my #2 song.

There's so much positive to say about so most of these songs, the exciting countdown and BleuPanda's amazing work, and yet here comes a negative post after long silence.

And for me this comment also applies to "All my Friends". The discussion that the song is a contender for the overall number one or top 10 drives me nuts.

It was number 18 in our poll in 2010!

I think Stairway to Heaven will be number one this time, but I really hope I'm wrong.

I've gotten into 1 LCD Soundsystem song, ever -- but not that one ("Someone Great"). I don't have any real problem with Grimes' "Oblivion," in fact, I was humming that one big time after a couple listens and rated it high in the 2010-2014 poll. Maybe being too picky but I feel the vocals could be stronger, though they have a D.I.Y. charm.

I tried to eyeball the #1 song from everyone's submissions, to no avail. If I had to guess, I couldn't help but notice that "Strange Fruit" did very, very well...

I, meanwhile, quoted "All My Friends" in my high school yearbook, and finding it on the acclaimed music list was my main entry point into albums as a whole and the reason I stuck around with this website.

Everything about "All My Friends" is perfection to me. That simplistic, off kilter piano that works its way through the song like a runaway train, the song's incremental adding of more and more instruments until we reach the climatic conclusion, the plaintive, heart melting, lyrics, Murphy's last shouts of "we are your friends tonight?", just...everything.

My favorite discoveries so far, shuffling through the Spotify list, are Don't Think Twice, It's Alright (which I had probably heard before but didn't really remember) and Hocus Pocus. Not much I dislike (and it usually means Eric Clapton is involved) so far!

I'm always happy when I see a song by a band or a genre that usually don't get much support around here.
Seeing Waiting Room for instance, though way too low, was a great surprise (Fugazi might be the most underrated band on the forum compared to its AM rank and critical status).
For the same reason, it's nice to see Windowlicker or Protect Ya Neck.

496. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (1979)
Really surprised that one ended so low, would not have been surprised if it ended on the top 200. Surprised it is that low in the main list too actually !

481. Portishead - Roads (1994)
Pleasantly surprised that this ended up above Glory Box (though not by far and with less votes)

479. Brian Eno - By This River (1977)
Hoped it might get higher after showing good support in the 70s poll. That's one of the biggest discovery of the last 12 months for me, it's a mystery how such a simple piano loop can get so gut wrenching.

Highest ranked song with only 3 votes, that's really a love/hate song apparently ! Seems obvious on which side I am, such a powerful song. That moment Malkmus screams "Booooyyyy" is one of favorite syllables in music. (Sabotage's why is a close contender)

Bit of a disappointing result for my 2nd favorite soul song.

414. The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes (1969)
There are not that many songs I link that much to a movie, the scene where Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart are listening to it driving around in Adventureland wouldn't be as powerful without that music. Love the song and the movie to death !

381. The Knife - Silent Shout (2006)
Last poll's ranking of that song was a fantastic surprise. Not as good this time around but still a good showing. I love how the eerie but warm feeling of the song. I get why people like Heartbeats more, but that's the best Knife song.

3 songs from Funeral in the top 200 ! Now let's hope the best song of the album will end up higher than the worst.
Arcade fire failed very close to having a song from all of their albums in the top 4 (Intervention being 503).
Did someone who released more than 4 albums get one song from each of them in our top 500 or 1000 (I was gonna say the Fab Four of course but I'm not sure I've seen anything from Please Please Me yet)?

118. Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - Get Lucky
I'm happy this didn't get higher !

And I'm a big fan All My Friends fan, one my 3 top 10 songs that should make it to the final top 100.
Don't think Stairway to Heaven can win it, but I would not have thought Gimme Shelter could either... the conservative A Day in the Life / God Only Knows / Like a Rolling Stone podium seems more likely.

I love "All my Friends". The simplistic silliness and one-of-a-kind charm with lyrics you know the meaning of but can't quite explain to anyone. It's a work of art.

I put it at #87 on my list. Up from #232 in 2012. A few more listens made me go from simply liking the song to loving it.

Seeing "Frontier Psychiatrist" get so high was really mind-blowing as I put the lists together (only one remaining song was more surprising). I do really enjoy the song (I have no idea how it didn't make my list), but I've never understood why the forum prefers it so much over "Since I Left You."

100. The Beatles - In my Life-Good song. I put it somewhat low on my list, but it is still a good song.

99. Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer-Very unique song with very good storytelling. Probably the best produced song of Simon and Garfunkel's career.

98. Iggy Pop - The Passenger-Highest songso far I hadn't heard yet. It's fine, but this high over "Lust for Life"?

97. The Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand-Even if this song is lyrically childish and kinda silly, it did start that new sound precedent and established the Beatles as more than a flash-in-the-pan. For that, it does deserve respect, I guess.

96. U2 - One-Yeah, Yeah. It''s moving and powerful and iconic and all that. I like this too, but there are a few other U2 songs I think are better.

95. Ben E. King - Stand By Me-Insanely catchy and timeless. Another song that just slipped my mind.

94. M83 - Midnight City-Wow! Did not see this coming and forgot it landed on the list last time. Funnily enough, I missed this song when it came out. It didn't take long for me to catch on, though. That is creepy album art!

93. The Beatles - Penny Lane-Fun and catchy. Not sure if it crosses my list, though.

92. Pixies - Where Is My Mind?-Definitely. Defines the alt-rock scene of the late 80s. I don't think Fight Club would've been half as good if it ended with a different song.

91. Prince - Kiss-A great new entry which I voted for. I love how he rhymes "with" with "kiss". This is one of the best "slant rhymes" I've heard.

90. Stevie Wonder - Living for the City-Definitely its own entity. Heard it senior year in high-school English as part of our African-American Literature unit.

89. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way-This and "Songbird" are my dad's favorite songs. They're actually back-to-back on the ground-breakingly, genre-bustingly, earth-shatteringly popular Rumours album. This is a well-deserved staple of Classic Rock!

88. Beck - Loser-Experimental and bizarre, but in a fun way. Beck was a game-changer, but I actually think his new song "Dreams" is even better! Go figure!

87. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues-Infinitely quotable and fun to sing along to.

86. The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back-Definitive vintage pop. Its use in Guardians of the Galaxy was perfect.

The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist-Awhile ago I made a response to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's list of Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll (the original, not the revision with songs past the mid-90s). I thought, "what songs from the past few years have continued to shape pop music? What are the true originals?"

There is no better song I would give this title than "Frontier Psychiatrist". There has been nothing truly like it before or since. Great and truly unorthodox pick for the Top 100.

84. Prince - Purple Rain-An 80s anthem. For me, it's just okay, but not surprised to see it clicked with you all.

83. The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin'-I love how it's a song that seems happy and creepy at the same time. Beautiful piece.

82. The Kinks - You Really Got Me-Great ringtone material. Another staple of classic rock I can get behind.

81. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five - The Message-Great message and testament to old-school rap. However, I think "Rapper's Delight" is the superior old-skool jam.

I don't know. It would have made my list regardless of the sixties poll. It isn't exactly an unknown quantity. One of the most well-known French songs I'd say. It's relatively low placement on the main list is probably because of the focus on rock songs in most critics lists, but why it wasn't on this one before is a mystery. Good to see it enter this high.

Because I noticed Frontier Psychiatrist high on many lists I expected it to do very well here, though it is still a nice left-field entry for the top 100. I didn't know it well enough to qualify it for my list, but it is definitely unique. The Passenger's top 100 placement caught me more off-guard. Never thought it had so many fans here, though it featured on my list too.

I'm enjoying reading all these responses to the placements here. I would like to do something like that too, but don't have the time now. Maybe this weekend I can write something about the songs I want to comment on in the whole list.
For now, I just want to comment shortly on the controversial ones. I like Oblivion a lot; it was bubbling under in my top 500. I'm close to neutral to All My friends. The music and lyrics have a strange kind of appeal, but it doesn't really hit me deeply like my favorite songs of LCD Soundsystem. Like a Rolling Stone deserves every accolade it gets in my opinion. I could go on about it for a long time. Maybe I will in the future.

What I don't understand, it's why this Piaf song in particular? In her 5 or 6 "hits", why this one and none of the others (La vie en rose, Mon manège à moi, La foule, Padam padam, Milord).
The same for Gainsbourg, why this very good rank for "Je t'aime, moi non plus" and not for his others and sometimes better songs?

Bleu is the name of a very minor character in the first Shining Force video game, but Bleu is a dragon. Pandas are my favorite animal. So I guess I added them together to make BleuPanda? And now it looks like I misspelled Blue, so then I went ahead and made Beast from X-Men my profile picture to suggest that was really the case, as if Beast looked like a Blue Panda. Or maybe it's a really convoluted way of calling myself a cheesy bear.

Thumbs down to You Really Got Me once again outpacing all Kinks tracks except Waterloo Sunset. I wish we could get a really strong placement for Victoria or Shangri-La one year.

Yeah, I made three videos with the site and a few articles about film, but then I had an existential crisis during my senior year of high school that led to my coming out and then dealing with the stress of my mother refusing to accept my sexuality, and the people who ran the site refused to understand why I might have disappeared for a while. So I don't exactly have fond memories of the place...

I notice it got ZERO first-place votes this year, though. Not that that disqualifies it. "Gimme Shelter" did win with not top votes.

I think it will come down to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "All my Friends". Though the journey was so fun I don't really care.

It didn't make our top 1000 in either 2010 or 2012, so I'd say its chances of making the top 80 this time around are pretty much nil.

80. U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday-One of my Top five U2 songs and almost identical to my vote. You saw "I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For", "with or Without You" and "Wherethe Streets have No Name" already, though. By the way, how many of you guys like "Bullet the Blue Sky"? That's sort of my wild-card pick and I feel it's very underrated.

79. Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the U.K.-Textbook punk, but always seemed like a novelty. I always preferred The Clash and felt Sex Pistols to be just noise. This is another okay song.

78. Johnny Cash - Hurt-Great example of making a cover and completely changing it. Even more heartbreaking when accompanying the video. I can see why this moved so many people. It's in my Top 100 too.

77. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird-Surprise! Even if I do prefer "Sweet Home Alabama", I cannot dismiss or understate this song.

76. Television - Marquee Moon-A unique song I didn't like at first but has started to grow on me. Deserving even if I didn't vote for it.

75. The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby-Makes my list after narrowly slipping off in 2012. Instrumentally and lyrically moving, this is the Beatles at their best.

74. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy-A bit too monotonous to make my list. Even the singer sounds uninterested. "Teardrop" packs more emotion and has better production.

73. Oasis - Wonderwall-"The only 90s song visible from space" as Night Vale so eloquently put it. I still ike this song and feel it's good even after the overplay and legions of imitators. But the more I hear "Live Forever", the more that song speaks to me.

72. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine-Perhaps the greatest "hard rock" song of all time, if you could even call it that. Becomes even better when you learn it was basically written on the fly. Slash's warming up became the most iconic guitar track of the 80s. I still have to keep myself from singing along. Worth the placement.

71. The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black-My favorite Stones song. Both the lyrical themes and the desert-rock sound give it an alien feel. And I always thought the title had a comma.

80. U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday - Who could forget their Live at Red Rocks music video for this song? Arena/stadium rock at its apex. The Joshua Tree introduced me to U2, the music video made me a fan.
79. Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the U.K. - If only one punk song is considered in the top 100, I'd consider this. Pure punk both in its lyrics and musicianship although "London Calling" is a close second.
78. Johnny Cash - Hurt - My fave NIN song lyrically ("Closer" is just a sonic tour de force) even before the cover. Kudos to Reznor for acknowledging Cash's superb rendition.
77. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird & 76. Television - Marquee Moon - what a coincidence that 2 songs featuring 2 of the finest dueling guitars recorded (& very long songs) are placed next to each other.
75. The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby - one of the first Beatles song that deals with social issues and they nailed it. McCartney can write both silly love songs and masterpieces like this.
74. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy - I'm not a big fan of trip-hop and "Teardrops" may have greater tv/ad soundtrack appeal but I dig the production and the soulful vocals.
73. Oasis - Wonderwall & 72. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine - another pleasant coincidence, 2 great rock love songs placed next to each other and the one that broke both bands in the U.S., as with RHCP ("Under the Bridge" over "Give It Away") I am disappointed that their edgier masterpieces ("Live Forever" and "Welcome to the Jungle") are not as acclaimed.
71. The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black - greatest use of sitar I've heard ("Norwegian Wood", second), the 60's was a truly great time for music. For a time my fave RS song until I heard "Gimme Shelter", I think it was in a Scorsese movie.

Interestingly enough, this could be either "Casino", "Goodfellas", or "The Departed" (if memory serves me correctly, there's a scene in "The Departed" where "Gimme Shelter" starts playing, stops, and then starts playing a second time!). Doubly interesting is that Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert film "Shine a Light" DOESN'T include the song.

Also interesting that this forum prefers "Wonderwall" to "Live Forever". Both songs made me top 100, but "Live Forever" is clearly the superior, in my mind.

Are you listening to the right song? Unfinished Sympathy has a highly emotional vocal performance and the way the strings are integrated into the production is just masterful. Teardrop isn't really in the same league in terms of emotion and intrigue (at least say Angel if you're going with a track from Mezzanine). The blend of soul and dance remains pretty unique, especially the use of a full orchestra.

Eh, we're talking about a song I love and a song I LOVE. I guess there's a bit of a jump in quality in my top 100 around the 40-45 mark, which separates songs I love from songs I LOVE. If that makes any sense.
