This list is awesome, Blanco! (And not just because it has many of my favorites, but mostly because it also has several songs I'm not familiar with to visit for the first time.) Thanks for posting!Blanco wrote:I think this is the best list to find "lost" or "new" jewels:

I'd agree with you there! Unfortunately I found myself only being able to put it as high as 391 on my list, but it is astonishingly good. Oddly enough I haven't really listened to much Belle outside of their first two albums - it's like the quality there is more than enough to leave me satisfied.GucciLittlePiggy wrote:I don't know why I thought this would be a forum favorite, but all the way up until about the top 150 or so I kept expecting to see "The Stars of Track and Field' by Belle and Sebastian. It's my favorite of theirs and I thought many others would feel the same.

Interesting, I'll be taking a look at this to see which ones I'm unfamiliar with that grab me.Blanco wrote:I think this is the best list to find "lost" or "new" jewels:

Thoughts so far:
That Lady Lamb song could be a grower...enough substance there musically for me to return to it.
Filmore Jive I've only heard in the context of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - and while it's a great closer, there are definitely some other tracks on that album that outshine it. Gold Soundz, par exemple!
The Sigur Rós track is magical, surprising no-one. Like Björk, they're one of those artists I definitely enjoy, but I just haven't listened to them enough to single out specific favourites (apart from Svefn-g-englar - that and Hoppipola are what brought be to Sigur Rós in the first place).
Nothing but Heart is nice. Just starting to get into Low; have not been disappointed yet.
Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten is very powerful - and having the last bell's overtones be so distinct is a stroke of genius. BUT, my favourite discovery so far has been the Disco Inferno track. I'm a massive fan of New Order, so this sort of thing is right up my alley.
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
Looking through the spreadsheets, most of the songs I was the only vote for don't really surprise me, but one jumped off the page at me: "Prove It All Night". I guess I projected the forum's love of Bruce Springsteen and "Darkness on the Edge of Town" onto that song, which I view as the best on that album.

Thanks for putting this together, BleuPanda!
Most of the changes from the last list are not ones I'm happy about, which was my complaint about the last list as well.
Oh well. Glad to see "All My Friends" make a huge jump!

Thanks for the countdown and the lists Bleu.BleuPanda wrote:Here's the year breakdown.
Based on the poll here and looking back to 2012, as already noted there is a clear skew towards late 60s/early 70s as already noted. Looking through individual lists, this skew doesn't seem to be so apparent. I think in part it is that the votes going towards these 60s/70s years are more concentrated in a smaller number of songs, rather than spread over a large number. Probably due to many factors including broader availability of niche music (allowing more exploration into lesser-known artists), consensus that has built up over time by critics and fans of the 'best' music of the 60s/70s era (which is then self-fulfilled in polls, as these are the tracks that people have heard & also the tracks that people know are 'safer' votes).
I'd be interested to see what the year breakdown would look like if all points were included (including those that fall outside the top 1000), as opposed to counting the # that made it into the 1000. This would show whether the skew is due to concentration of votes for these years, or a real preference for these years. (I'm sure this is not possible / very difficult to get all of the years against each track - so I'm not asking BleuPanda or anyone else to do this!).

Great list Blanco. Thanks for putting this together - I agree this is a really useful way of gathering the data to find great tracks that have potentially been lost along the way.Blanco wrote:I think this is the best list to find "lost" or "new" jewels:

Bad news, Bleupanda. I just decided to add the first batch of 2015 songs to my all time songs list. The two songs I added?
217. Tame Impala- Let It Happen
254. Courtney Barnett- Pedestrian at Best
With my vote for "Pedestrian at Best", I'm sure the song would've made our top 1000! Sorry I was a bit too late adding these 2015 songs though. I like to wait a couple months before adding any new songs to my list.

The best way to 'toggle' the results to make them more interesting isn't to go by post count or only including the top 100, it's to make a delineation between the lists highly correlated to the AM list vs. those with more eclectic tastes. Last time, sonofsamiam just separated out the "Stairway to Heaven" voters from those who didn't vote for it and it was pretty fun (I remember "B.O.B." was #1 on the alternative list). Would be interested in someone running something like that again!

I'm just lamenting the fact that I added those 2015 songs just a little too late.
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I actually found out just how correlated some lists were with the AM list when I was considering creating a weekly game based upon the highest ranked songs on the individual lists that weren’t on AM (including bubblers). My plan was to list the highest unranked song on everyone’s list and give everyone who was interested a month to rank their 10 favorites from the group. (Actually, since there were 52 lists this time, I was going to divide them in half, ranking from the first 26 the first month, and the second 26 the next, just to keep it manageable.) I was inspired to do this by how well songs featured in other games (“Stella,” “Sinnerman,” “Right On For the Darkness,” “Brandt Rhapsodie”) have done in the all-time songs poll. I figured that we could have even more interesting songs in our list next time if they just received a little more exposure on the forum. (In fact, I planned on keeping the monthly rotation of highest ranked non-AM songs going right up to the next poll.)Jackson wrote:The best way to 'toggle' the results to make them more interesting isn't to go by post count or only including the top 100, it's to make a delineation between the lists highly correlated to the AM list vs. those with more eclectic tastes. Unfortunately, I gave up on the idea when I discovered that on some lists I needed to go all the way into the 400s to find a song that wasn’t on the site. It just seemed somewhat slanted to be ranking top 5 songs from some lists against bottom 100 songs from others. This is absolutely nothing against the people whose lists contain almost all AM songs. I completely understand that some people rely very heavily on this site for their music listening. (A quick scan through the radio on a given day really helps me understand why!)
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
Yeah, I'm one of those admittedly generic people. As I've said before, I didn't really even start listening to music until I found this site, and I still have plenty of music to get through here before stepping outside the site. If I actually included video game music on my list that would probably be different, but yeah...

Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
Wow, great lists! Glad I found enough time to make one.
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I definitely wouldn’t call it generic, BleuPanda. I would guess at least half of the songs on my list don’t appear on AM, but it’s largely because, when I was young, I listened to tons of mainstream radio. If this site had existed back then, the vast majority of my list would probably be made up of these songs instead, since my favorite songs and best memories revolve around my youth. In fact, if this site had been my major source instead of the radio of my youth, I’d probably be a lot less embarrassed by some of my selections!BleuPanda wrote:Yeah, I'm one of those admittedly generic people. Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I've been like a kid in a candy store once I downloaded the data - trying lots of different cuts. One of the things I did was to include "non-consensus voters" only. This was determined based on the number of top 10, top 100 and top 300 songs from this poll included by each voter and calculating a point value on how much of a "consensus voter" each voter was. I then tried at varying levels of inclusion.Jackson wrote:The best way to 'toggle' the results to make them more interesting isn't to go by post count or only including the top 100, it's to make a delineation between the lists highly correlated to the AM list vs. those with more eclectic tastes.
My favourite list was the following - it includes the votes of the 20 least conforming voters:

Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
So I haven't had a computer for about two weeks (moved house and then went on vacation without much internet for 12 days). I didn't realise this would be rolled out so soon. I'll go through a bit closer and read everything but a few comments:
441. Daft Punk - Da Funk (1995)
179. Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien (1960)
128. Björk - Bachelorette (1997)
85. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
I'm so happy these songs made it, and so high up!
83. The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin' (1965)
32. The Ronettes - Be my Baby (1963)
These two should have been in my top 100
Top 10 biggest falls:
1. Sigur Ros - Svegn-f-englar (-689 from 241 to 930)
I'm not angry AMF, I'm just disappointed
Top 10 biggest climbs:
1. The B-52's - Rock Lobster (725 from 945 to 220)
Well, not too disappointed

Too bad you gave up, it's a fantastic idear. If you drive this game, for sure, I will become a passenger.jamieW wrote: Unfortunately, I gave up on the idea when I discovered that on some lists I needed to go all the way into the 400s to find a song that wasn’t on the site. I completely understand that some people rely very heavily on this site for their music listening. (A quick scan through the radio on a given day really helps me understand why!)
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I think we all pass through that stage. First it's the parent's record collection, then in high school my friends' record collection, top 40, & pre-TRL MTV, then the internet came in college. First I listened mostly to hits that charted in Billboard and then I moved on to critics lists and finally this site.jamieW wrote:I definitely wouldn’t call it generic, BleuPanda. I would guess at least half of the songs on my list don’t appear on AM, but it’s largely because, when I was young, I listened to tons of mainstream radio. I think the lists handed by critics are likewise evolving. If you look at old critics lists there's no "A Day in the Life", "Life on Mars", "Gimme Shelter" or "Tiny Dancer" such as the Rolling Stones Top 100 in the late 80's or VH1's Top 100 in the 90's. Who knows what old songs would gain new-found relevance in the next AMF poll?
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I would be very interested in understanding how the various voters correlate with the AM list. I am confident that the list influences me to some extent, but do not have a strong view as to how closely my list correlates to the AM list. For example, my initial guess is that Moonbeam's list has a lower correlation with the AM list than my listjamieW wrote:I actually found out just how correlated some lists were with the AM list when I was considering creating a weekly game based upon the highest ranked songs on the individual lists that weren’t on AM (including bubblers). Last time, sonofsamiam just separated out the "Stairway to Heaven" voters from those who didn't vote for it and it was pretty fun (I remember "B.O.B." was #1 on the alternative list). Would be interested in someone running something like that again!

That alternative top 100 is really cool. Nice mix of the consensus favorites with some out of nowhere picks (Fillmore Jive and Pagan Poetry top 50!).
My guess is Bruno had the most consensus list and CharlieDriggs was the least correlated.

Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
Given what's in there, I'm guess I'm one of those 7 least conforming voters. In a way that's nice, because more than for any list I have made before I feel here were 500 songs I truly love. For the previous poll I started with a 700 songs list and had some trouble cutting down to 500 because the distinction was not that clear ; this time my preliminary draft was around 520 songs, and they were all "obvious" picks, real standouts, so what I guess I mean here is that I feel I have found my real personal favorite music more than ever.phil wrote:And with just the 7 least conforming voters:Jackson wrote:The best way to 'toggle' the results to make them more interesting isn't to go by post count or only including the top 100, it's to make a delineation between the lists highly correlated to the AM list vs. those with more eclectic tastes.

That being said my list would probably look much more unconventional in a Pitchfork, Treble or Stereogum readers poll... sure some songs like Velvet Waltz would still be very personal favorite, but I would probably fit the mold.
And I don't know if I deserve to be called more eclectic than people who got a lot of songs from AM, because sure I have more 90s and 00s centered genres than most, but I also have no jazz, very little world music and disco and almost no pre 60s songs. I would call lists from Dan or Nicolas, while most likely closer to AM and the final list, more eclectic than mine (though most likely the crown would go to sonfosamiam ! )
So sure I like those "non conforming" or "top 100" lists better, but it's because there fit closer to my tastes, not because they are better per se.
I have been listening to the top 1000 on spotify on shuffle for a week now (not a good shuffle though, some songs seem to come back again and again). It's really fun, sometimes I realise I have missed things in the poll (we included Baby One More Time ??? And higher than Toxic ?)
Sometimes I am a bit puzzled too, I understand the love for Elvis Costello but I really don't get why those that are acclaimed are better received than others. On the 7 we have put, while all are enjoyable, I only find Beyond Belief and I Want You outstanding, on the other hand we have nothing from This Year's Model (especially no Lipstick Vogue ???), no Radio, Radio, no Shipbuilding (or its cover)... that's a mystery to me !

Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I think sometime in the near future, we should do a "Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Songs" poll on the forum, given their overall lack of representation in the main songs poll. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the top songs aren't the same, because you'd likely only get more hardcore hip hop fans voting, as opposed to the "I don't really like rap, but I'll put 10 Kanye songs on my list" people. I'm definitely not an avid rap fan, but I think it would be interesting.

Thankfully, our "generic' characterization is not based solely on our ranking of "Stairway to Heaven."Henrik wrote:Correlations!

Yes, please! I hope many others are interested because you're right that the genre is underrepresented on this list.Listyguy wrote:I think sometime in the near future, we should do a "Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Songs" poll on the forum, given their overall lack of representation in the main songs poll. I'm definitely not an avid rap fan, but I think it would be interesting.

My list would look like rap music mysteriously stopped existing after 1997. (Minor hyperbole) Well, we could all give it a whirl.Listyguy wrote:I think sometime in the near future, we should do a "Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Songs" poll on the forum, given their overall lack of representation in the main songs poll. There probably would be but hopefully to a lesser extent. I predict a top 5 finish for Nas if this ever happens.Jackson wrote: I was thinking the same thing recently...still fear Kanye domination.

I know I wouldn't put 10 Kanye songs. I even have a definitive #1 for this one. While my top pick changes for the overall list, I do know my favorite rap song.

Rap albums or songs poll I would be 20000% pumped for!!!
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I've realised on seeing Henrik's list of correlations to the list that I made a bit of an error in my lists. I didn't account for some voters having less than 500 songs in their lists. This meant that some voters were considered non-conformist voters just because they didn't list as many songs (so didn't have as much crossover with the list). I've updated now, applying a scale according no number of votes. It's not a huge difference - but I'll update the lists in my posts above soon. [Edit: Now updated]
On my system, voters ordered from most consensus to least:
Nick, JimmyJazz, BleuPanda, Bruno, Dexter, luney6, Dan, whuntva, ordinaryperson, OtisRedding, stone37, Rob, Jirin, TimmyWing, Romain, Sweepstake Ron, Nicolas, PlasticRam, Listyguy, GucciLittlePiggy, hectorthebat, DaveC, Live in Phoenix, Andre, kingoftonga, Henrik, Michel, Jackson, Red Ant, BryanBehar, Henry, Gillingham, VanillaFire, bonnielaurel, Krurze, jamieW, Maschine_Man, DocBrown, Toni, Charlie Driggs, antonius, Brad, Blanco, sonofsamiam, Fred, acroamor, Jeff, Nassim, notbrianeno, Georgie, Moonbeam, Zombeels

I'm definitely down for this. Maybe even break it down by decades. 80s, 90s,00s, 10s. Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
Actually my top 10 rap songs list avoids Kanye domination cos he's so versatile that he can't be boxed. Meaning some of my Ye favs are 808s type stuff.
Also would maybe be fun to have rap albums poll too. My list wouldn't be so Kanye-influenced either.
The way we could avoid Kanye domination is if a lot of the users participate that aren't his fans to say the least.

Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
Issue would be defining the boundaries of the genre.
Depending on how you count I have between 58 and 70 hip-hop songs in my list.
I'd go with 60, that's excluding 2 non hip-hop Beastie Boys song, 2 Gnarls Barkley song, several DJ Shadow song (he claims he does abstract hip-hop but let's not count it), Outkast's Happy Valentine's Day, Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around Comes Around and N*E*R*D's She Wants to Move but still including Outkast's Roses (not that hip-hop but a rap verse at the end) or Vic Mensa's Down On My Luck.
In there I have 5 Kanye songs (or 4.5 since there's Niggas in Paris) and I think the ratio would be pretty similar if I extended my list to 100 or 200 songs.

AMF All-Time Rap/Hip-Hop Songs Poll? If it's done the way how BleuPanda did the AMF All-Time Song Poll then count me in!
Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I agree but I would have more generalist issues: what about proto-rap, like The Last Poets or Gil Scott-Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", the New Wave flirts like Blondie's "Rapture" or (in France) Chagrin d'amour's "Chacun fait (c'qui lui plaît)"? And is DJ Shadow or the instrumental tracks featuring hip-hop effects (like the ones used on some video game soundtracks, for instance) considered hip-hop, like it is on Wikipedia or Allmusic? And does trip-hop fits too, or is it considered a separate genre?Nassim wrote:Issue would be defining the boundaries of the genre.
The boundaries are kinda blurry sometimes, so I guess we should all agree about what is eligible and what is not beforehand.

M.I.A.'s Paper Planes...? (I'd say hip-hop)
Faith No More's Epic...?
Any song with a rap section (like Rapture, or Groove Is in the Heart)...?

Re: AMF All-Time Song Poll (2015 edition results)
I don't think the user that runs the poll should be the one deciding if a song is hip hop or not. I think it should be each voter's decision. If enough agree it is, then it will find a place on the list. I personally think DJ Shadow is, becuase his music is completely sample-based. I'd personally say a song like Frank Ocean's "Super Rich Kids" counts because of the rapping section, while "Thinkin Bout You" or "Pyramids" wouldn't, but again, each voter would have a different opinion.Nassim wrote:Issue would be defining the boundaries of the genre.
