Updated with the fourth movement of Tchaikovsky's Sixth symphony.
Sorry whuntva, the other three movements were already selected by the biggest fans (Dan, Romain and sonofsamiam, two of them shared your choices).

Oops, I'm so sorry, my friends but you have already voted for two Classical works that were not qualified in prelims but they showed on the first lists because of a mistake I made when compiling Chamber section. These works are:
- Schönberg | Verklärte Nacht (voted by sonofsamiam, whuntva and schaefer.tk)
- Dvorák | String Quartet in F major, "American" (voted by whuntva and schaefer.tk)

Now we have two options:
a) You can change your Top 100s removing these non qualified works.
b) We could keep these votes but also include the ones who not entered initially because of my mistake, so we will have 127 works instead of the planned 125. Why not? In this case you should edit your Top 100s if you want to include:
- Beethoven | Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat major, "Archduke"
- Gabrieli | Canzon primi toni a 8

whuntva, it's your decision. If you chose option b you could even only post the Top 125 (when you post the results) removing the two at the very bottom.
I'm really sorry about that. :(

I think Option A would be easier. I already have some bubbling under songs I could easily swap in.

I'll be sure to correct this error on the main post. Sorry for not re-revising this.

EDIT: Funny, the main post rectifies this error.

Heads up to all potential voters, those works are ineligible. Anyone who already voted for them is allowed to leave them in, but those particular votes will not count for points. If that makes sense.

Deadline is August 15. Not tomorrow.

If that's a problem for anyone else, I CAN extend it still.

Updated my list to (sadly) remove Schoenberg. Everything else moves up a place and I added Bach's Double Violin Concerto at 100. Also, I updated my alphabetical list accordingly. That's what messed me up.

Re: AM Classical Poll Final Round

Post by Honorio »

Well, finally got my Top 125. I was tempted to do a Top 100 (like the ones who woted before) because maybe the most difficult part was the bottom 25. I like a lot even the ones I put on the bottom 10! Anyway here it is:

1. Johann Sebastian Bach | St Matthew Passion | 1727
Sacred music. The choral music created by Johann Sebastian Bach to illustrate the passion of Christ according to Saint Matthew is so sublime, so impressive, so divine, so otherworldly but at the same time so emotional (just listen to the children's choir on the opening chori, "Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen (Come, you daughters, help me to lament)") that for me it's the ultimate representation of divinity, portraying it so well that it (almost) makes me believe in God.

2. Antonio Vivaldi | Concerto No. 2 in G minor, "Summer" | 1725
If the complete "Le quattro stagioni" (The Four Seasons) were eligible (in fact it usually appear as a whole in concerts and albums) it should be everyone's #1 on the Concerto section. Each and every one of the four concerti is awesome but the best one in my opinion is the second one, "L'Estate" (Summer) if only for this tumultuous but ravishing "Presto" (a.k.a. "The Storm"). Glorious. But what more can I say? I'm a barocker, baby. You know, baroque runs through my veins.

3. Erik Satie | Trois Gymnopédies | 1888
The first ambient pieces ever, not making any waves when they were published but opening a path still travelled today with outstanding results. Music that can be left in the background but imperceptibly changes the environment, giving a sensation of ingravity. But if you pay attention to the music you can easily get caught, almost mesmerized. And these "Gymnopédies" (especially the first one) achieve it with such simplicity that it's unbelievable that nobody did it before.

4. Sergei Prokofiev | Suite No. 2 from Romeo and Juliet | 1936
"Montagues and Capulets" from the "Romeo and Juliet" Suite for Orchestra builds from silence climaxing quickly into an impressive disonant orchestral chord. A friend of mine used to say that this chord "contain all the music in the world." Maybe he was true but for me the real highlight here is that dramatic ascending and descending melody played by the string section over an ominous march rhythm sustained by the double basses and horns. The sounds of the tragedy.

5. Dmitri Shostakovich | Symphony No. 10 in E minor | 1953
Shostakovich wrote his 10th symphony just after the terrible period of Stalinism, with two sublime movements, the second and the third. The ominous second movement is, according to the composer, "a musical portrait of Stalin, roughly speaking." And the third is a personal reaffirmation of the composer after his 1948 denunciation by the Soviet authorities, using the famous DSCH-motif (the composer's initials, Dmitri Schostakovich) over a waltz rhythm pattern.

6. Ludwig van Beethoven | Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, "Eroica" | 1804
Every symphony written by Beethoven is a masterpiece but my favourite is (and always will be) the Third, the "Eroica." If only for the superb second movement, the Funeral March, the part from 7'22" to 9'35" is so beautiful that it hurts.

7. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Requiem Mass in D minor | 1791
Probably the first eight bars of the "Lacrimosa" movement of the Requiem was the last music Mozart ever wrote on his death bed (it was later completed by Süssmayr). If that's true, what an incredibly sad testament for such a genius!

8. Frédéric Chopin | Three Nocturnes, Op. 9 | 1832
I remember some years ago picking up my kids at school when Chopin's "Nocturne No. 2" sounded on the equipment of the school playground. Amidst the incessant chatter of the mums the music stood proudly intimate, humbly majestic.

9. Igor Stravinsky | The Rite of Spring | 1913
The 1913 Paris premiere ended as a riot, now it stands up as an undisputed masterpiece of modern classical music. Schönberg first broke with tonality but it was Stravisnky who broke with rhythm with his irregular metric patterns.

10. Johann Sebastian Bach | Suite No. 3 in D major | 1730
As a whole the Brandenburg concerts are better but I put this Suite at #10 because of the second movement, "Air." Probably the most beautiful piece of music ever, with an influence lasting even in pop music. Remember Procol Harum?

11. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Clarinet Concerto in A major | 1791
The second movement (the sublime "Adagio") definitely should be included in the definition of the word "beauty."

12. Gustav Mahler | Symphony No. 4 in G major | 1900
The soprano lied was groundbreaking at the time but the crowning achievement here is the emotional third movement.

13. Johann Pachelbel | Canon and Gigue in D for 3 violins and basso continuo | 1694
Echoes of this simple but delicious piece still can be heard today on every kind of music (as humorously stated here).

14. Franz Schubert | String Quartet No. 14, "Death and the Maiden" | 1824
The second movement consists on variations on a previous lied, each one of them expressing a very different emotion.

15. Giacomo Puccini | "Nessun dorma" (tenor aria from "Turandot") | 1926
I recently saw the opera live directed by Zubin Mehta, it's impossible not being deeply moved by the whole Act III.

16. George Gershwin | Rhapsody in Blue | 1924
A piece that changed the music landscape, the missing link between classical and jazz, between popular and cult.

17. Johann Sebastian Bach | Cello Suite No. 1 in G major | 1720
Best piece for cello ever. The opening movement is one of the best pieces written by JS Bach. And that's saying a lot.

18. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" (soprano aria from "The Magic Flute") | 1791
My daughter's favourite music piece when she was a child, I got tons of videos of her singing and acting like a diva.

19. Ludwig van Beethoven | Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, "Moonlight" | 1801
It includes two high peaks of classical, the sublime first (Adagio sostenuto) and the impressive third (Presto agitato).

20. Philip Glass | Glassworks | 1981
A masterpiece of contemporary post-minimalism, with six splendid songs/movements, pure classical for now people.

21. Olivier Messiaen | Quatuor pour la fin du temps | 1941
Written at a concentration camp for the only instruments available, violin, clarinet, cello and piano. Sounds of death.

22. Ludwig van Beethoven | Symphony No. 9 in D minor, "Choral" | 1824
Simultaneously the last great Classical and the first great Romantic piece. Surely a (deserved) candidate to win the poll.

23. Edvard Grieg | Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1 | 1875
Born as incidental music for the (fabulous) Ibsen's play of the same name, now this music piece brightly shines for itself.

24. Béla Bartók | Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta | 1936
Fear. The third movement, with the timpani glissandi, is so terrifying that it has been used in many horror movies.

25. Antonín Dvorák | Symphony No. 9, "From the New World" | 1893
Using pop terminology, every movement from this symphony is a smash hit, evoking the American "wide open spaces."

26. Steve Reich | Music for 18 Musicians | 1976
27. Johann Sebastian Bach | Mass in B minor | 1749
28. Sergei Rachmaninov | Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor | 1901

Re: AM Classical Poll Final Round

Post by whuntva »

OK, we are four days out from deadline.

So far, I have received eight lists:

Bonnielaurel
Dan
Henry
Honorio
Romain
Schaefer.tk
Sonofsamiam
Whuntva (myself)

Honorio said he'd send me help files when he got back from Bath.

The poll closes on Aug. 15, but please give me some time to tabulate results. Rollout should begin about 3-5 days after that.

Thank you everyone who has voted thus far!

One of these day's I'll submit an AM list more than 24 hours before the deadline, I promise...

Oh, and one more thing.

I have a basic knowledge of Excel, but I'm not quite sure how to insert the AM formula and make it work.

Can you help? Thanks.

Last call for lists!

I think I'll keep it open until 11:59 forum time, same as usual. Results will take time, they will be here when they are here.

Also, please tell me, if anyone knows how to integrate the AM formula into Excel, that would be very nice of you.

Thank you everyone who participated.

I got the calculations already made and I just sent you the file to your mail but maybe it would be better that you make the calculations too so we can have a double checking of the final results.

Anyway I'll try to explain how I did the calculations:
1) I did two Excel pages (I named the first Top 125 votes and the second Top 125 points).
2) In each one of these pages I copied the 125 works in alphabetical order on the first column (A2 to A126).
3) I put the name of every voter on the next columns of the first page (B1 to J1) on the first page and from C1 to J1 on the second page.
4) I included the formula SUM(C2:K2) on the second cell of the second column (B2) and copied and pasted it on the whole B column on the second page.
5) On the first page I clicked on the first row of the last column (K2) and I introduced the formula 100*(1+50)/(position+50) (inside the ƒx cell) replacing "position" by B2.
6) Then I copied this K2 cell on this whole column (from K3 to K126).
7) I introduced manually the numbers of the first voter (so as an example I wrote for sonofsamiam column I wrote 1 in B93, 5 in B8 or 100 in B6).
8) After introducing the votes in the B colum I erased all the 102 number of the K column (these were the ones that did not received votes).
9) Then I copied the whole K column of the first page on the third column of the second page (C, the one corresponding to sonofsamiam). It's important in this case copying only the numbers and not the formulas.
10) Then I changed the formula of the first page replacing on the first cell B2 by C2, I extended to the whole K column and introduced the votes by whuntva.
11) Then I repeated stages 6-10 for every voter.
12) When it was all done I sorted the works on the second page sorting the values of the B column from largest to smallest.

Hope it's clear. My excel is in Spanish and I'm not familiar with the English Excel terminology.

OK, thanks Honorio.

I guess poll is closed. Results will come about Monday, and from there we roll out about 20 per day, except the first day where the Bottom 25 get mention as well.
