AM Classical Poll: Symphonies

by whuntva
Alright, we finally start Round 1.

There was too much ambiguity over most of the categories, but let's start with an easy one. We will do large orchestral pieces with multiple movements.

GoodMusicGuide defines symphonies as "A large-scale work for full orchestra. Usually consists of four movements or sections, often alternating fast-slow. Beethoven's ninth symphony was the first to break with tradition in that he included vocal soloists and a full choir into the final movement. Other composers who wrote well-known symphonies are Haydn (wrote 104 of them), Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mahler and later Prokofiev and Shostakovich."

If there is any ambiguity, please save it for other orchestral.

I will accept a list of at least five. If you want to submit more than fifteen, be my guest. But only the first fifteen will be counted. Top twenty will make it to the final pool of pieces.

Point sum:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPECIFY A RECORDING!! I'll leave it open for a week two weeks.

Happy Voting!

Beethoven is the Beatles of symphonies.

Janacek wrote a "Sinfonietta" (little symphony), but I'll save that for "orchestral music," if that works for everyone.

1. Symphony no. 7 - Ludwig van Beethoven
2. Symphony no. 9 - Ludwig van Beethoven
3. Symphony no. 9, "The Great" - Franz Schubert (Thematic number D.944, occasionally numbered as the 7th or the 8th)
4. Symphony no. 5 - Ludwig van Beethoven
5. Symphony no. 2 - Philip Glass
6. Symphony no. 7 - Antonin Dvorak
7. Symphony no. 1, "A Sea Symphony" - Ralph Vaughan Williams
8. Symphony no. 5 - Jean Sibelius
9. Symphony no. 4 - Johannes Brahms
10. Symphony no. 41, "Jupiter" - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
11. Symphony no. 104, "London" - Franz Josef Haydn
12. Symphony no. 3, "Pastoral" - Ralph Vaughan Williams
13. Symphony no. 6, "Pathetique" - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
14. Symphony no. 5 - Dmitri Shostakovich
15. Symphony no. 3, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs - Henryk Gorecki
===
16. Symphonie Fantastique - Hector Berlioz
17. Symphony no. 3, "Eroica" - Ludwig van Beethoven
18. Symphony no. 8 - Philip Glass

Symphony is my least favorite musical form. If this had been a straight "100 favorite classical works" list, maybe the top four or so would make the cut. Maybe.

1| Elliott Carter - A Symphony of Three Orchestras
2| Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5
3| Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection"
4| Ellen Zwilich - Symphony No. 1, "Three Movements for Orchestra"
5| Charles Ives - Symphony No. 4
6| Jean Sibelius - Symphony No. 2
7| Hector Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique
8| Carl Nielsen - Symphony No. 4
9| Witold Lutoslawski - Symphony No. 3
10| Roger Sessions - Symphony No. 3
11| Anton Bruckner - Symphony No. 9
12| William Grant Still - Symphony No. 1, "Afro-American"
13| Per Norgard - Symphony No. 3
14| Carlos Chavez - Symphony No. 2, "Sinfonía India"
15| John Corigliano - Symphony No. 2

Oops, now that I take a closer look, "The Steppes of Asia" is an orchestral piece on the same CD that his Symphony no. 2 is. My mistake - regardless of the name, I meant to vote for Borodin's Symphony #2.

Why? Why only one week? In this case I won't have time enough to do some listening, only write a list from the top of my head. Here it is anyway my Top 15 (the cover art of the Top 5 comes from the recordings I own of these pieces):

1. DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH "Symphony No. 10 in E minor" (1953). Favourite part: "III. Allegretto"
With two sublime movements, the second and the third. The ominous second movement is, according to the composer, "a musical portrait of Stalin, roughly speaking." And the third is a personal reaffirmation of the composer after his 1948 denunciation, using the famous DSCH-motif (the composer's initials, Dmitri Schostakovich) over a waltz rhythm pattern.

2. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN "Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Eroica" (1804). Fav: "II. Marcia Funebre - Adagio assai"
If only for the superb second movement, the Funeral March, the part from 7'22" to 9'35" is so beautiful that it hurts.

3. GUSTAV MAHLER "Symphony No. 4 in G major" (1901). Fav: "III. Ruhevoll"
The soprano lied was groundbreaking at the time but the crowning achievement here is the emotional third movement.

4. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART "Symphony No. 40 in G minor" (1788). Fav: "I. Molto allegro"
The No. 41 (also on my list) got the acclaim but the first movement of the No. 40 epitomizes the greatness of Mozart.

5. ANTONIN DVOŘÁK "Symphony No. 9 in E minor, From the New World" (1893). Fav: "I. Adagio - Allegro molto"
Using pop terminology, every movement from this symphony is a smash hit, evoking the American "wide open spaces."

6. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN "Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Choral" (1824). Fav: "IV. Presto; Allegro molto assai (Alla marcia); Andante maestoso; Allegro energico, sempre ben marcato"
7. FRANZ SCHUBERT "Symphony No. 8 in B minor, Unfinished" (1822). Fav: "I. Allegro moderato"
8. HECTOR BERLIOZ "Symphonie fantastique" (1830). Fav: "II. Un bal"
9. PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY "Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Pathétique" (1893). Fav: "I. Adagio – Allegro non troppo"
10. HENRYK GÓRECKI "Symphony No. 3, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" (1977). Fav: "I. Lento - Sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile"
11. JOSEPH HAYDN "Symphony No. 104 in D major, London" (1795). Fav: "I. Adagio - Allegro"
12. JOHANNES BRAHMS "Symphony No. 4 in E minor" (1885). Fav: "III. Allegro giocoso"
13. OLIVIER MESSIAEN "Turangalîla-Symphonie" (1948)*. Fav: "I. Introduction. Modéré, un peu vif"
14. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART "Symphony No. 41 in C major, Jupiter" (1788). Fav: "IV. Molto allegro"
15. IGOR STRAVINSKY "Symphony of Psalms" (1930). Fav: "III. Alleluia. Laudate Dominum"

* I'm not sure if "Turangalila" qualifies as a symphony

Two comments:
a) I knew much more about classical music when I was a teenager than today, now I listen much more to pop, rock or world music than classical music, in probably the opposite move some people of my age did. Some of the pieces on my list were huge favourites of mine when I was 14-years old.
b) I like this game and I'm going to try to participate but maybe we could chose a simpler approach with less categories: a) Symphonies b) Concerti c) Vocal (including Opera) d) Chamber (including solo and ensemble pieces) and e) Other. I would even group symphonies and other orchestral pieces like suites or program but it's too late for this. Anyway bonnielaurel suggestion is good enough, we can follow her suggestion. But… why not doing a final poll of classical pieces in general? Defining as a piece every classical work that appears as a track on a CD, I mean it could be a movement of a symphony, an aria from an opera, a movement of a piano sonata, etc. Think about it…

My entirely selfish concern with this is that so many of my favorites would fall into Other.

I probably would have preferred a general poll where we mash everything together regardless of type, I'm spending much too much time worried about what is Program Music, etc. For example, minimalism ... is Music for 18 Musicians program music? I have trouble with the complexities of categorizing, I'll be quite honest, especially with such short voting periods...

I extended the time if that's okay.

I assumed one week would be fine because that's what we usually do with polls like this.

But this isn't a normal poll.

So each individual round gets two weeks now. Top twenty from each genre do get clumped into a general poll.

OK?

Two weeks is not a bad idear for other genre of classical music.

It's easy to pick up the "best" symphonies" but for orchestral works (not symphonies) or solo pieces for example, we have so much choice, we have to choose in a top 100, 200 or 500...

Great start to this classical poll. Thanks whuntva. I like the 20 symphonies that have gone through to the final stage, even though I have conflicting feelings about symphonies. Many classical aficionados consider symphonies to be the pinnacle of classical music. On the one hand, I don't feel the same kind of love for symphonies because there simply aren't that many symphonies that I'm truly fond of. But on the other hand, when a symphony really speaks to me (whether through a good recording or through a fantastic live performance – which I was fortunate enough to experience when I lived in London) there’s nothing like it. In fact, sometimes a symphony can give me such a catharsis that it takes me a day or two to listen to non-classical music again, because even my favourite songs and albums can seem trivial in comparison. I’m looking forward to revisiting my favourite concertos next.

Fuck yeah, classical is cool!

Yes, fantastic results!
Seeing that we are selecting 20 choices for the final pool and, at the risk of being annoying and tiresome, I should insist in reduce the categories to 5 so we will have a final Top 100 of classical pieces. The original suggestion of bonnielaurel was:
bonnielaurel wrote:*Symphony
*Concerto
*Other orchestral
*Opera
*Other vocal
*Ensemble
*Instrumental solo
This distribution is very good and, as bonnie said, "that way there wouldn't be much doubt which music belongs to which category." The problem with that approach is that probably we will find more masterpieces (or simply more of our favourites) in the "other orchestral" than in, for instance, "other vocal." Because talking about classical music "other vocal" probably only includes some sacred music (oratorios, requiem mass or works for choir) and some profane (cantatas and lieds). My suggestion (again) is:
a) Symphonies.
b) Concertos.
c) Vocal (grouping "Opera" and "other vocal").
d) Chamber (grouping "Instrumental solo" and "Ensemble", just like Dan did with his wonderful list that he named "solos, duos and chamber works").
e) Other orchestral.
We will obtain with this a nice and balanced Top 100.

Thinking of it, my 5 favourites classical pieces of all-time belong to each one of these five categories:
1. SERGEY PROKOFIEV "Romeo and Juliet, Suite No. 2 for orchestra, No. 1 Montagues and Capulets" (1936), #50 of all-time, Other Orchestral.
2. JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH "Matthäuspassion (St. Matthew Passion), No. 1 Chorus: Kommt, ihr Tochter, helft mir Klagen" (1736), #86 of all-time, Vocal.
3. ANTONIO VIVALDI "Concerto for violin, strings and continuo in G minor, 'L'estate' The Four Seasons 'Il cimento, No 2', 3rd Movement: Presto" (1725), #123 of all-time, Concertos
4. ERIK SATIE "Gymnopédies No. 1" (1888), #174 of all-time, Chamber.
5. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN "Symphony No. 3 in E flat major 'Eroica', 2nd Movement: Marcia funebre, Adagio assai" (1803), #225 of all-time, Symphonies.

Thanks Whuntva :happy-partydance:

Honorio:
Grouping opera and Other vocal is, for me, a really good idear.

On the other side, I'm not sure for "Instrumental solo" + "ensemble", it seems too huge, especially when compared to the "Concerto" category for example.

However, maybe we can put some extract (youtube link) for the movements we love the much in each categories?

I agree with Romain. "Opera" and "Other vocal" could be merged into one big "Vocal" category. However I'm not in favor of merging "Ensemble" and "Solo", because piano solo is already big by itself, and then you have other keyboard and stringed instruments: organ, harpsichord, guitar, Bach's cello suites etc.

Well, maybe you're right, Romain and bonnielaurel. In this case we can expand the "other orchestral" number of works passing to the final pool to 25. In this case we will end with a Top 125 of classical pieces (a better number than 120).
