Help wanted: Define the debut albums from 2004-2013 on AM

Post by Henrik »

If I could get help to define the debut albums from 2004-2013 among the AM albums that would be awesome.

I suggest that you just list the debut albums here in this thread, one year at a time.

Thanks in advance!

There are debut albums lists from Musikexpress, Classic Rock, NME, Rolling Stone and No Ripcord. With your help I can include these lists in the next update.

Sure, I'll help with this one :)

Edit: How are EPs being considered in this instance (ie, would an EP released prior to one of these "debut" albums count as the true debut)?

I think EPs should not be counted since lots of albums that appear on the magazine lists have been preceded by EPs (Funeral, Licensed to Ill, Murmur or Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not).
There are a few more arguable ones like Bjork's Debut which was preceded by a self titled album in 1977 or Minor Threat's Out of Step and Pixies' Surfer Rosa for which the preceding EP is ranked in AM.

That taken into account, here is 2004 :

Arcade Fire - Funeral (not counting "Arcade Fire EP")
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Madvillain - Madvillainy (not debut from MF Doom, not debut from Madlib but first album as Madvillain)
TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes (not counting the self released demo album "OK Calculator" and the "Young Liars EP")
The Killers - Hot Fuss (not counting self released demo album "The Killers")
Danger Mouse - The Grey Album (not counting 2003's Danger Mouse & Jemini album "Ghetto Pop Life")
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike (not counting the "Get It Together" EP)
Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender (not counting the 2 Eps "Walnut Whales" and "Yarn and Glue")
Junior Boys - Last Exit
Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters
The Futureheads - The Futureheads (not counting "Nul Book Standard EP" and "1-2-3-Nul! EP")
CocoRosie - La Maison De Mon Rêve
Annie - Anniemal (not counting "I Will Get On" EP)

Bubbling Under :
A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder
Adem - Homesongs
John Legend - Get Lifted
Kasabian - Kasabian
Keane - Hopes and Fears
Micah P. Hinson - Micah P. Hinson & The Gospel of Progress
Mylo - Destroy Rock & Roll
Nellie McKay - Get Away from Me
Ray Lamontagne - Trouble (not counting 1 demo and 4 Eps)
Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere (not counting "September 000" EP)
The Zutons - Who Killed The Zutons?
Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles

I agree EPs should not be counted. It's not necessary to be as detailed as Nassim, but of course it doesn't hurt. Thanks Nassim!

Ok, I've got a question, Henrik: How would you like the situation involving critically lauded mixtapes to be handled?
There are a few instances that aren't too difficult to address (I doubt that anyone would argue that Kiss Land's existence means that House of Balloons is ineligible as The Weeknd's debut), but a stickier situation comes with Frank Ocean.
Does Nostaliga, Ultra qualify as his debut because it was his first piece of recorded work under that name?
Does Channel Orange qualify because it was his first studio album released via a major label and sold for a profit?
Or do they both count depending on the individual list's understanding of "debut"?

Kendrick Lamar's debut album is Section.80 then? I'm just saying cos Rolling Stone ranked GKMC 86th on their The 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time, but I guess we're gonna treat that entry just like compilations on RS 500, and just leave it out.

I would assume so... Honestly Rolling Stone, Section.80 might not have been released to an overwhelming amount of attention (nor was it released by a major label), but it is pretty lazy to just flat-out ignore it :angry-nono:

I think I had a brain fade. They ranked Good Kid Maad City 86th. But maybe you understood me correctly despite my total screw-up :D

Thousand thanks Luke!

I have no general answer to your questions. I think the best thing to do is to try to get a feeling of how each critics' source have handled things like mixtapes and EPs. The detailed information gives me the possibility to be flexible, which is awesome. Thanks again to everyone who helped me!
