Acclaimed Music Madness: Sweet 16
Acclaimed Music Madness: Sweet 16
The initial field of 64 artists has been whittled down to a mere sixteen. So begins the second half of the tournament. From this point on, all regions are together and we go through two rounds per week. Additionally, the voting scale has undergone a slight adjustment. This poll closes around 11pm EST (4am GMT) Wednesday night (Thursday morning for GMT).
IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU VOTE, READ THIS
After careful consideration, I have decided to amend the voting scale for the latter rounds of the tournament. This is partially because of feedback and in part because of a change in voting trends as the game has progressed (that is, people mostly awarded fewer points in round 2 than in round 1, a trend that will likely continue from here on making the possibility of unbreakable ties more likely). If everyone absolutely detests this new system, it can always be changed for next round. I must tip my hat to Henrik, who suggested the new system.
For each matchup, indicate which artist you prefer and then assign that artist a score between one and three. However, you are limited by the number of scores that you can give:
3 – One per voter. Do you spend it on an artist you love or against one you hate?
2 – Three per voter. Not as influential as a 3, but can still easily sway the outcome of a match.
1 – Four per voter.
As always, please remember to have at least a passing familiarity (i.e., listen to a couple of their songs) with each artist. To accommodate this, I have prepared three-song playlists for each artist which can be accessed via the link at the bottom of the post.
Matchups:
London
1) The Beatles
4) Bruce Springsteen
6) Duke Ellington
2) Miles Davis
Lagos
1) Prince
5) Frank Sinatra
11) The Velvet Underground
7) Neil Young

More on the voting change:
Under the new system, people who give out mostly 1s are forced to award higher scores and people who award mostly 3s and 2s must give out more 1s. Now everyone has an equal amount of points meaning that everyone has the same amount of influence on the outcome of the game, rather than a small minority with extreme opinions carrying greater weight than the more moderate majority (considering that there are three artists that I dislike still alive in the tournament, I would count myself in the former group). Moreover, instead of hoping that everyone votes honestly using the old relative preference scale, the game now basically encourages people to vote strategically, which seems to me more fun and less frustrating: no more giving your favorite artist a 2 instead of a 3 because you honestly like their opponent just to see your favorite lose by a single point. I had misgiving about changing the rules 1/3 of the way through the tournament, but considering everything above, I felt it better to be proactive.

A legitimate dead heat, and the worst possible match up for jazz fans. Pre or post bop? Big band or combo?
Lagos
1) Prince
5) Frank Sinatra - 3 We'll counter Honorio here, with my easiest pick of the week

London
1) The Beatles +1
4) Bruce Springsteen
6) Duke Ellington
2) Miles Davis +2
I had an extra 2 to allocate, and Duke seems pretty far out of his depth...
Lagos
1) Prince +2
5) Frank Sinatra
Frank is outclassed, plain and simple.
11) The Velvet Underground
7) Neil Young +2
Similar to the Dylan/Stones match-up, except Young is more likable.
Memphis
1) Bob Dylan
4) The Rolling Stones +3
Neither one of these are my favorites, but I'm putting my money on the Rolling Stones as the giant-slayer... Don't disappoint me Mick
3) Stevie Wonder +1

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Sweet 16
Honestly, if it wasn't for the rule change I would have given nothing else but ones here. Now I gave the 3 to the least close matchup and the two's to my three favorite artists in this list.
London
1) The Beatles
4) Bruce Springsteen 2
6) Duke Ellington 1
2) Miles Davis
Poor Duke, as born to lose as Sol Hoopi in round 1, though I honestly like him just a little more than Davis.
Lagos
1) Prince 1
5) Frank Sinatra
11) The Velvet Underground
7) Neil Young 1
Memphis
1) Bob Dylan 2
4) The Rolling Stones
3) Stevie Wonder
10) Pink Floyd 2
Detroit
1) Radiohead
12) The Beach Boys 1
3) Bob Marley
7) David Bowie 3
London

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Sweet 16
There's about 13 hours left to vote in this round.
To Nassim and Miguel, the voting procedure for this round is a little different than in previous rounds. Read the first post of this thread for more information if you want to change your votes accordingly. For now, Nassim's votes are taken as is since he did not exceed the point total. Nassim only needs to bump one of his 1-votes to a 2. For Miguel, his 3-votes are counted as 2s and his 2s as 1s so as not to exceed the point limits. Miguel just needs to pick one of his threes to keep and change a few 2s into 1s. Hopefully you guys will visit this thread again and edit your votes, especially since some of these matches are nearly tied.

I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Sweet 16
As much as I would love to hold off a bit and see if a shining white knight will come and save the day by eliminating Neil Young, I'm afraid I must close the poll two hours early tonight. I do not expect anymore votes anyway at this point and the issue with Nassim and Miguel's votes is inconsequential since it's mathematically impossible for them to affect the outcomes of any of the tightly contested races.
Results will be posted shortly in the results thread.
