The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
After 10 long months, we have almost come to the end of our journey. The 150 (/151) greatest albums and songs of the 70’s have been determined, and all that remains is to put them in their correct order!
The formula that will be used to give points is as follows:
100*(1+30)/(position+30)
If you haven’t heard all of the songs or albums, don’t fret. You can not vote for them, and they will be given the same score as the song/album in the middle of your list (so, if you vote for 101 songs, the 49 you didn’t vote for will receive the same score as #51 on your list). You will also be given ample time to listen to anything you haven’t heard.
At the bottom of this post is the excel file, which has both the albums and songs on it. You can send it to this email address: amf70spoll@gmail.com, but keep in mind they have two different deadlines:
Songs Deadline: January 17
Albums Deadline: January 23rd
Given there are two separate deadlines, you can opt to send them at different times. Just be sure to specify which list you are sending (and your forum name) in the subject line.
Put your rank (1, 2, 3, etc) the “rank” column of the excel sheet. When you have completed it to your liking (or when the deadline is in 20 minutes), send it off to the email address above.
If you have not heard a song or album, please leave the rank cell blank.
(PS: thanks to Listyguy, whose rubric I pretty much copied from last year's 80s poll!. And as a heads-up, I'm convinced the presentation will not match up to previous standards, but I will try my best!)

Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
PS: can people please look over the final lists just to check that I haven't made any weird errors/spelling mistakes/omissions already...
PPS: There are 151 songs because I added in Roadrunner manually because its vote got split between 1975 and 1976, because I hadn't made the rules clear on eligibility!

48 albums to listen to ! (and a dozen that I would prefer listen to a 2nd time before voting). I know what the next weeks will be all about
Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
Is there an ID column for the songs? I only saw one on the albums.

Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
For those who don't know all the songs, wan't to refresh their memories or just feel like listening to the complete 14 hours and 8 minutes of music we voted for in our seventies song poll, I made a Spotify playlist of the whole thing:
I went with the album version for both No Woman, No Cry and Roadrunner.
Interesting to see how the length of songs varies through the years. The first half of the seventies had a lot of long songs, peaking in 1975 based on our list. Come 1979 they were decidedly shorter.
I don't know what to do with the album list, yet. I wanted to have good knowledge of each album come voting time. Even though I tried to keep up with listening this year I still haven't listened to 60 of the chosen albums. Even if I would make a big effort to give each and everyone a spin I would probably have a hard time ranking them. I notice that most of my favorites are still albums I knew before this game, not because they are necessarily better, but because I know them better. Multiple listens usually reveal the true quality of an album and I don't think there are 50 albums I know that way. If I hate an album (which I rarely do in this list), it's less of a problem, but I feel I might not be able to make a good personal list, so I might only vote for the songs. I'll decide when the time comes I guess and for now try to catch up with more albums.
Instead of alphabetical on artist name I ordered it chronologically by year, from 1 to 15 as we voted the songs. There are 152 songs in the playlist, because I didn't know quite what to do with Shine On You Crazy Diamond and decided to just add both parts; the playlist wasn't long enough anyway.

Rob this is amazing!! I haven't participated in the poll at all (despite running half of it...) but I will definitely get a songs list in thanks to you!

I like how the Excel program catches one's counting mistakes... so I've been told

I am so behind on this one. I will definitely rush my lists in before the deadlines, but if others feel the same then perhaps the dates could be moved?

If others do feel that way, I am happy to move the deadlines back a week or two. I suspect December is a bad time for most people to have to listen to music methodically!
Thoughts?

Ok, that's pretty unanimous.
So how about:
Songs Deadline: January 14
Albums Deadline: January 21
And then my aim is to get the results presentation finished before the end of January, which will presumably be before any sort of EOY poll gets going. I don't really want to push anything any further than that though...

Hello Zorg, I'm sorry, I sent you a list, but with some mistake. I rework on the new list and I will sent you the new list this afternoon.
P.S. : OK, I sent you the new lists.
And for the spelling mistakes, I found this a little bit strange "Lynard Skynard" instead of Lynyrd Skynyrd but I don't know if it's done on purpose.
Thank you.
For the songs :
Great or good : 1->92
OK : 93->123
Dislike : 124->151

Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
I'm beginning to work in the songs list and I first compared our results last time we voted on a 70s poll (in 2009). 24 of the 100 songs selected then are now out of our 150. 14 of these 24 songs ended in the 76-100 positions (6 of them in the last 10 positions) but 4 of these songs ended on our Top 50. I just can't believe that "Boys Don't Cry" or "Psycho Killer" didn't make the cut this time! Both songs are on my Top 250 of all time.
These are the songs included in the last 70s Poll but not included in this one:
29. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry (1979)
37. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer (1977)
38. The Velvet Underground - Rock and Roll (1970)
47. David Bowie - Changes (1971)
53. Wire - Outdoor Miner (1978)
59. The Undertones - Teenage Kicks (1978)
66. John Cale - Paris 1919 (1973)
68. Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970)
71. Ramones - Sheena Is a Punk Rocker (1977)
73. The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off (1972)
76. John Lennon - Working Class Hero (1970)
78. Chic - Good Times (1979)
79. The Police - Message in a Bottle (1979)
84. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Powderfinger (1979)
85. Joy Division - Disorder (1979)
88. The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet (1978)
89. Joni Mitchell - Free Man in Paris (1974)
90. Gladys Knight and the Pips- Midnight Train to Georgia (1973)
91. Roxy Music - Love Is the Drug (1975)
95. Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear (The Reaper) (1976)
97. Millie Jackson - If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right (1974)
98. Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back in Town (1976)
99. The Rolling Stones - Miss You (1978)
100. Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove (1978)
The years with more differences between the 2009 and 2014 polls were 1978 and 1979, with 5 songs each.
On the other hand (and somehow compensating the shock for "Psycho Killer") I'm delighted to see some songs in my all-time list entering this time, songs like "Into the Mystic," "Oliver's Army," "Because the Night," "The Carpet Crawlers," "Highway Star" and "Like a Hurricane."

Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
What is the plan for the rest of next year? Last time after the 70s poll, we did 50s-60s over one year (sorry for not giving any details, I'm posting from my mobile). Should we use the same schedule again?Zorg wrote:And then my aim is to get the results presentation finished before the end of January, which will presumably be before any sort of EOY poll gets going.
Will we go on forever with these decade polls? Another idea I've got is that we could do polls by artist. We could take the artists in the order they appear on the AM artist ranking and list their albums and songs. Perhaps one artist per month, perhaps more. Perhaps side by side with the yearly polls, perhaps alone.
What do you think?

Haha, the Lynyrd Skynyrd thing is due to me copy and pasting off the "Results and Link" thread, so the error is technically DaveC's! But it shouldn't matter, the ID column should keep everyone's votes for Lynyrd Skynyrd in order anyway.

I think the forum has enough turnover in terms of members to keep the decade polls interesting enough. At the same time, your artist poll idea really cool too, and definitely fresher compared to decade polls. But maybe poll fatigue will set in?Henrik wrote:What is the plan for the rest of next year? Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
As much as I love the 60s, I definitely wouldn't participate as much in the next decade poll if we do have it. I've got a couple of ideas for games too (though I have no interest in starting them any time soon). I think we should start a "new poll" thread, I'm sure there are some good ideas out there.Zorg wrote:I think the forum has enough turnover in terms of members to keep the decade polls interesting enough. Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
Since it takes so many years to cycle back to the same decade, by which time we can have stumbled upon some more listening material since then (or changed our minds about our favorites), I don't mind keeping up the decade polls. Even with the more-frequent all-time polls, we have seen noticeable changes.
I would only be able to hang in for a Top 5 albums list for 1960-66, and that might be a similar issue for other voters, but it's all right for a new poll to take more of the attention for a while. The '50s and/or early 1900s could be its own year, and could give some people a year off to concentrate on other polls (yet the decade polls would still keep chugging along).

Finally finished ranking the songs, sent my list in.
Somehow I had already listened to 130 or so of the albums before looking at the list but had 50+ songs to go (admittedly I had heard some of the songs on the 130 or so albums, but had never listened to them standalone enough to rank).

I'll try to get mine in by next week!
Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
I'm bored, I think I'm going to sit down and do this right now. I've heard most of them but the only one I didn't hear that I was able to listen to is Caught Up.
Edit: How did Armed Forces fail to qualify?
Re-edit: Nevermind, just wasn't alphabetically sorted.
Out of the 135 albums I've heard, 25 are in my AT top 100, 96 are in my top 700 (As far as I track), and I'd make the 'Good' cutoff at around 111.
My top five that did not qualify:
#2: Tim Buckley - Starsailor
#12: Roy Harper - Stormcock
#14: Bridgitte Fontaine - Comme a la Radio
#16: Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
#21: Pere Ubu - Dub Housing
Without Starsailor in the mix, my #1 and #2 votes ended up being for the same artist.

All the songs of the Mahmoud Ahmed original 1975 album ("Erè Melà Melà") can be found in Volume 7 of the Éthiopiques series (1999) with different sequence. But to make it easier I compiled a Spotify playlist with the original 1975 sequence.Listyguy wrote:Could someone link a place they listened to Ere Mela Mela? Re: The Best Albums and Songs of the 70's - FINAL Round
Just beginning to dig in the 70s albums list and I also checked which albums from our last Top 100 ended out of our actual Top 150. The albums obtained a much higher consensus with the previous list than the songs, only 6 albums left out while there were 23 songs.
These are the albums (the numbers are the final positions in our last poll hosted by Nassim):
81. Talking Heads - Talking Heads 77 (1977)
82. The Specials - The Specials (1979)
87. Parliament - Mothership Connection (1975)
89. Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove (1978)
94. The Jam - All Mod Cons (1978)
95. Bob Dylan & The Band - The Basement Tapes (1975)
Boys, you really need to listen to more ska and P-funk…

Just send my song list to Zorg. Without giving the rankings away, here is how the songs would score based on a five-star scale:
5 stars: Songs 1 to 38.
4 stars: Songs 39 to 137.
3 stars: Songs 138 to 147.
2 stars: Songs 148 to 151.
1 star: None.
So very little I dislike and a lot to love. No complaints here.

Oh and also, because I have exams on the 17th, I won't be able to concentrate on compiling the results until they're finished, so I may as well move the songs deadline until the 17th.

Songs list sent.
Breakdown is relatively similar to the 80s : 25 songs I love, 50 I really like, 40 I enjoy, 35 I don't care for and a couple I really dislike (one of which I complained enough about for people to guess )
I kinda struggle with the albums, partly because most of them are in the "meh" zone but also because I really confuse the Brian Eno albums with each other, and same goes for part of Neil Young, all the Bob Marley and all the Steely Dan ones...
