Fairly weak week; besides the fantastic Carr, my own nomination, only Miss Nordenstam is good—but she's very, very good indeed. Tha Carter II actually had some surprisingly good moments, but it's about half an hour too long. The first (and, spoilers, penultimate) WWWWLLLL week; my favorite kind.

1. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up
2. Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes
3. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
4. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
5. The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
6. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II
7. The Germs - (GI)
8. Hot Chip - The Warning

3-1
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Damn The Torpedoes 6/10
Hot Chip - The Warning 5/10

A solid but uninteresting set of catchy pop rock songs wins over a directionless bit of electropop.

3-2

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs 6/10
The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I 7/10

Diamond Dogs is one of tne of Bowie's discs where he veers a bit in the direction of attitude and style over songwriting. Emergency & I is distinction in the 90's style of indie similar to Pavement, but it's got some great guitar work.

3-3

James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up 8/10
The Germs - GI 8/10

This is a very close match, I'll edge it to the Germs for energy.

3-4

Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes 9/10
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II 8/10

Tha Carter is awesome, better than I expected and it totally explains the hype around III, but it falls short of Nordenstam's beautiful delicacy.

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes vs. Hot Chip - The Warning

On round 1.1 I told there were some albums I love which I understand some might not enjoy, the Warning is not one of them. From the catchiest tracks to the gentle ones, from the bleeps of Careful to the final harmonies of No Fit State, there is not much I don't find incredibly good here. On the other hand, Damn the Torpedoes has some okay tunes but is really not my cup of tea.

2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs vs. The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
I don't get all the pitchfork acclaim for Emergency & I but the energy and catchiness of the best tracks put it ahead of a lesser Bowie album

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes over Hot Chip - The Warning
My second concert ever was on the TP & the HB's "Damn The Torpedoes" tour at the Philadelphia Spectrum in 1980 (Tommy Tutone opened for him). This album ruled the airwaves that entire year and is still just a good, solid American rock standby. I prefer it over Hot Chip.
2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs over The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
If "Diamond Dogs" is "lesser" Bowie, that only speaks to how great Bowie can be... I thoroughly enjoy this album, certainly more than any post -Berlin era Bowie. Big fan of "Emergency & I" as well.
3. The Germs - (GI) over James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up
I love this Germs album - helped me cope with a turbulent senior year in high school so long ago. Crash wrote surprisingly good lyrics for so raw a band from the early US punk scene. James Carr's album was a pleasant listen, but it's the difference between him baring his soul and The Germs wretching theirs... I prefer the wretching.
4. Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes over Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II
Neither of these albums thrills me, though I'm much more likely to want to hear Stina again. I hope Lil Wayne doesn't really think he's the greatest rapper alive.

Thanks!

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes vs. Hot Chip - The Warning

I went into this bracket expecting to vote for Hot Chip, but I had forgotten how great Damn the Torpedoes, and it ended up stealing my vote. It's sort of absurd to think of it as a "moderately acclaimed" album, as I think of it as a popular classic.

2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs vs. The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

Both of these albums are ostentatious in their own strange ways, but Bowie seems more in control of his own abilities as songwriter and performer.

More to come, hopefully.

The Warning

Petty got a little petty (ha! yes, petty), but The Warning wasn't much better. Hot Chip in a close one.

Emergency & I

Apologies to Diamond Dogs, which was a solid album most of the way through, especially the title track. Emergency & I is one of my all-time favorites, though.

More to come.

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes vs. Hot Chip - The Warning

Petty's a guy that I've always liked but never listened to a full album of his, me gusta. Over & Over is a pretty good song but I didn't like much else from The Warning.

2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs vs. The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

3. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up vs. The Germs - (GI)

This matchup was madd close with 2 d's. James Carr is a stud but I have a history with The Germs, Lexicon Devil is the bomb.

4. Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes vs. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II

For me Tha Carter II is instant gratification.

Are you still in the area Brad? I just saw the Black Keys/Arctic Monkeys show at the Wachovia Center, fun place for a concert.

Not a lot to say about this selection

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
He's still young here, and has grown better over the years. Classic rock songs which have aged a little.

Hot Chip - The Warning
This is a little better than I remember from when it came out. I like the experimental touch. Such boring singing voices.

2. The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
I like the energy. Not an easy listen though. Like they try to dismember their music. I like it. Gets better with each listen.

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
One of his lesser albums and stays that way after a couple of spins.

3. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up
Classic soul

The Germs - (GI)

4. Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes
Too soft, can't keep my attention for long. Beautiful songs though.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II
I don't like his style.

3. You Got My Mind Messed Up

Strange, I normally take punk over soul. Carr's grabbed me from the start, though.

4. Tha Carter II

The entire album boils down to "fuck bitches, get money," but at least it won't fall apart when I pick it up.

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes wins over Hot Chip - The Warning
Damn the Torpedoes is my favorite Petty album, sounds great to me today, even if others feel that it hasn't aged particularly well. My favorites include: Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That, Here Comes My Girl, and Even the Losers.

The Warning includes some enjoyable songs including: And I Was A Boy From School, Over and Over, and Look After Me.

One day left!
Henry - can you clarify if one of those albums is a winner. It looks like Tom Petty, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

3. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up vs. The Germs - (GI)

I'm not a huge fan of soul or punk, but I'll take the Stax-esque brass arrangements of James Carr versus the lo-fi recording quality of the Germs.

Yes, I'm still out in the Western 'burbs of Philly. I've seen a couple shows at the Wachovia, but none too recently. As I get older, I find myself much preferring the small (ie-club) venues for shows. And family time now limits my live performance attendance a great deal as well. Do you live in the area?
