Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 16

Post by Listyguy »

We started this first round back in August. Now, nearing the end of November, it comes to a close with these last four brackets.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

3. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)
126. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
131. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)
254. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)

37. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)
92. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)
165. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
220. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)

23. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
106. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
151. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
234. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)

50. Solange - Losing You (2012)
79. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
178. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
207. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)

3. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
5. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)
9. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)
11. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
Let's make Making Plans for Nigel get to both bracketology next round and 70s poll final round, such a brilliant slice of new wave, both tough and full of love for its main character and its narrator... a domestic everyday tragedy.
I guess it's a lost race for bracketology next round given that Hurricane is in the bracket too, will be a deserved win as Bob Dylan made what is pretty much the embodiment of the protest song, so hard-hitting (and catchy) that it led to a retrial. Like the documentary The Thin Blue Line who led to the same effect, it's not perfect and drags a bit too long but works as a cultural milestone.
There's no way My Girls makes it through this bracket when one of the few remaining Animal Collective's supporter in the forum ranks one of their songs 3rd here ! While they are great, I think My Girls and MPP as a whole are a bit overrated, I've always liked Feels and Strawberry Jam more.

1. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
4. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)
14. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
15. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)
I already know I'm going to be pissed at this bracket's results...
Protect Ya Neck is as close to perfection as 90s hip-hop can be, the production is murky yet fantastic with RZA adding subtle touches over a menacing beat and all but one Wu-Tang members (but who cares for Masta Killa anyway) tag-teaming persona defining lines (even the 4 lines U-God verse is somewhat memorable). Pretty much every verse flies far over the competition, ODB being as crazy as expected, Raekwon and Ghostface refining their litterate gangsta characters, Method Man having fun with his dopey delivery and GZA (possibly the best MC of the crew) hitting it hard before letting RZA "take us the fuck out of here" with the best verse of the song and of his career. How great was it ? Well despite taking merciless shots at music majors, that got them a deal.
White Noise is one of my favorite songs of the past few years, so I'd be somewhat okay if it tooks the win here but I have no illusion that the bracket won't be won by one of the other 2 very average songs

6. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
8. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)
12. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
13. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
As great as he is with Outkast and in his solo albums, Big Boi featurings are often huge letdowns...

2. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
7. Solange - Losing You (2012)
10. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
16. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)
While most of Boy In Da Corner brilliance comes from sonic innovation, Fix Up Look Sharp works plainly on simplicity, frontal assault and the silly charisma of young Dizzee... and for 3:44 this works perfectly.
Losing you is a nice slice of modern R&B, the intro of Pinball Wizard is damn fantastic but the rest doesn't work as much for me and Tame Impala is as subtle as its title animal.

I wanna hear that Wu-Tang joint again !
Wu-Tang again ?
Ah yeah, again and again !

254. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
131. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)
3. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)
126. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)

Good bracket! I like every single song.

37. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)
165. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
220. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
92. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)

even better than the first one! It was really hard deciding between Disclosure and the Wu-Tang Clan. But Settle is probably my favourite album of the 2010's so in the end White Noise took the cake.

234. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)
151. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
106. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
23. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)

I don't really care for any song in this bracket however.

207. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)
79. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
178. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
50. Solange - Losing You (2012)

In this one, I love the first one and like the next two.

Hurricane
Shake Some Action
Making Plans For Nigel
My Girls
Man that Animal Collective song is awful. Outside of that, a good bracket.

Rock and Roll Music
Get Off of My Cloud
Protect Ya Neck
White Noise
Nothing that great here. "CREAM" probably could have won this one for me though.

I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better
Tightrope
Holocene
Hearts on Fire
Great bracket. All of the top three are favorites of mine.

Pinball Wizard
Elephant
Losing You
Fiz Up, Look Sharp
This bracket isn't that good, but The Who song is excellent.

Making Plans for Nigel
Hurricane
Shake Some Action
My Girls

"My Girls" is one of those things that just doesn't hold up! It was great in 2009, but is nigh unlistenable now. I give it to my #451 song over one of the absolute final cuts.

Rock and Roll Music
Get Off of my Cloud
Protect Ya Neck
White Noise

I missed "White Noise" and "Losing You" this week, but at least I understand why. Neither is really my type of music. Chuck wins a mediocre grouping.

Holocene
Hearts on Fire
I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better
Tightrope

"Holocene" was #317, so it was a race for second place. Hearts on Fire cut it close, but could not win.

Pinball Wizard
Elephant
Fiz Up Look Sharp
Losing You

Some of my favorite songs from their respective albums, but I'm slightly leaning Who here. "Losing You" is a very distant fourth, and not because of my unfamiliarity with it.

A lot of good songs this week, but not many I consider great. This week also features two of the most acclaimed songs of the past decade that don’t connect with me. “My Girls” is no surprise, since Animal Collective’s not my thing. However, I am surprised that I don’t like “Tightrope” more, since I generally do like Janelle. (“Cold War,” for example, would’ve easily won the bracket.)

In case anybody wants to get a head start on listening (or refreshing, I suppose) for round 2, I made a playlist of the songs that advanced. There are 6 songs missing: the four from this week, along with "Glory Box" and "Can't Buy Me Love".

Two strong brackets (#1 & #3) and two weak brackets (#2 & #4).

131. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)
126. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
3. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)
254. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
I still like 'My Girls', but this is a strong group, and there are better songs on MPP.

92. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)
220. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
37. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)
165. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)

23. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
234. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)
151. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
106. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
'Tightrope' pips 'Hurricane' for best song of the week, so I'm surprised to see it collect some 4th places.

79. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
50. Solange - Losing You (2012)
178. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
207. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)

1. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
2. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
3. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)
4. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)

A weird bracket for me – I can honestly say I like all of these very different tracks pretty much equally (although “Hurricane,” easily the most significant of these, has some of the worst lyrics of Dylan’s career). If I had to pick which one I’d most like to hear right now, it would probably be #1, for whatever it’s worth.

1. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
2. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
3. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)
4. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)

Another bracket with four first-rate tracks. #2 may be the most representative track from that classic debut, giving every Clan member a showcase spot, but #1 is a longtime favorite. (Side note: I can’t believe Disclosure’s “Latch” didn’t rank high enough for the tournament.)

1. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
2. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
3. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
4. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)

“Tightrope” would have won any of this week’s other three brackets (“we call this ‘classy brass’,” indeed), but #1 is more than a longtime favorite – it’s one of my all-time favorites. Great songwriting, a prototypical McGuinn 12-string solo, and those incredible harmonies – for my money, it’s the Byrds’ best track.

1. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
2. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)
3. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
4. Solange - Losing You (2012)

I love Lonerism, but “Elephant” isn’t one of my favorite tracks. “Pinball Wizard” shouldn’t stand alone so well as a single, considering that its lyrics make no sense outside the context of Tommy’s storyline (and don’t really make sense anyway), but thanks to Townshend’s skills as writer, arranger, and hammer-on-er, it does and then some.

254. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
126. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
131. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)

165. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
37. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)
220. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
92. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)

23. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
234. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)
151. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
106. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)

50. Solange - Losing You (2012)
79. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
207. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)
178. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)

The older songs fared poorly for me this week. If not for Bon Iver, the oldest song in each bracket would have been fourth place.

A very good week. Maybe low on the real masterpieces (only two, maybe three), but nothing that stands out as truly bad, Dizzee Rascals fine attempt aside.

3. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
4. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
9. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)
12. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)

I don't think I've heard Making Plans for Nigel before this week, but I can't get it out of my head anymore. Hurricane and My Girls are songs I have mixed feelings about. I'll probably get into it more in the seventies poll, but Hurricane is a strange mix between extremely inspired singing and violin playing (on basis on those it could have been song of the week), over questionable lyrics. Animal Collective is a band I mostly hate, but My Girls works pretty good mostly, but this band just can't live without too many bells and whistles that tend to bug me now and then.

2. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
7. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
13. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)
14. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)

Let's go with a reverse order then the one Acclaimed Music delivers. I'm not familiar enough with Wu-Tang Clan to know which member does what or why it captures him perfectly, but I can understand why the song starts with a request to hear that Wu Tang joint, as this is some fine rap. But sorry, Nassim, fine as it is, it goes against one of my favorite Rolling Stones cuts. Chuck Berry and Disclosure finish this bracket with solid work that just doesn't surprise enough.

1. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
8. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
10. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
11. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)

Is this the first time in 16 weeks I stick with AM's order? I think so. Probably my favorite bracket of the week. Tightrope is easily my favorite song of 2010 and I was saddened to see it fall from first to sixth place of it's year after last update. It have the greatest bit of funk since the seventies, while brilliantly updating it to the times, with flashes of hip-hop and modern pop-R&B.

5. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)
6. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
15. Solange - Losing You (2012)
16. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)

Fix Up, Look Sharp is a song that sometimes gets me in a party mood and other times annoys the hell out of me. This was sadly a day that it did the latter. Losing You is yet another Madonna-wannabe track (although mostly in the vocals), but at least one of the better ones. The bracket is more than saved however by a Who classic and the strangely thunderous sound of an Elephant.

2. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (1979)
3. Animal Collective - My Girls (2009)
11. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)
12. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (1976)
A much stronger bracket than I was initially expecting, XTC and AC are practically in a dead heat for the top slot, and one of Dylan's best (normally that isn't saying too much, but...) trumps a fantastic new discover in the Groovies. An excellent start to the last week of R1.

1. Disclosure - White Noise (2013)
9. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (1993)
13. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (1957)
16. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (1965)
- "Wu Tang?"
- "Again and again... Just slightly less than Disclosure's sublime collaboration with AlunaGeorge, now that is some gorgeous material that seems to be a little underplayed around these parts" :D

7. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (2010)
8. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (2007)
10. Bon Iver - Holocene (2011)
15. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (1965)
Too close to really call one way or another...

4. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (2003)
5. Tame Impala - Elephant (2012)
6. The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
14. Solange - Losing You (2012)
I'm sorry Solange, bur Dizzee has got the big beat, "Elephant" has got a fabulous psychedelic groove, and well, Tommy has got a really supple wrist... What have you got going for you?

Animal Collective- My Girls
Bob Dylan- Hurricane
Flamin' Groovies- Shake Some Action
XTC- Making Plans for Nigel

Man, there are a lot of Animal Collective haters on this forum. "My Girls" is a fantastic song, with one of the most explosive choruses I've heard in a long, long time. "Hurricane" isn't one of my all time favorite Dylan songs, but it's good enough to win this relatively weak bracket. The Flamin' Groovies and XTC songs are nice, but not great.

Disclosure- White Noise
Wu-Tang Clan- Protect Ya Neck
Chuck Berry- Rock and Roll Music
The Rolling Stones- Get Off of My Cloud

"White Noise" is my favorite song off of one of my favorite albums of the decade, so it was pretty much guaranteed first place here. Wu-Tang comes somewhat close with one of their best songs. After that we have a strong Chuck Berry song, and as much as I love The Stones, they have dozens upon dozens upon dozens of better songs than "Get Off of My Cloud".

Janelle Monae- Tightrope
Bon Iver- Holocene
The Byrds- I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better
Cut Copy- Hearts on Fire

Tame Impala- Elephant
Solange- Losing You
The Who- Pinball Wizard
Dizzee Rascal- Fix Up, Look Sharp

126. XTC - Making Plans for Nigel (65, 9)
131. Bob Dylan - Hurricane (64, 8)
254. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action (55, 2)
3. Animal Collective - My Girls (46, 4)
So it appears a round 2 appearance is part of Nigel’s plan, while “Hurricane” coulda been the champion of this bracket. Meanwhile, our number 3 seed, “My Girls”, got completely stomped. Next round “Making Plans For Nigel” faces “Thinkin’ Bout You”, “Sound and Vision”, and “Black Dog”.

220. The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud (63, 7)
92. Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music (58, 6)
165. Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (57, 5)
37. Disclosure - White Noise (52, 5)
This one wasn’t close for a while, but Wu-Tang and Chuck Berry refused to go down without a fight. Nevertheless, the Stones get one through, and it will face “Time to Pretend”, “The Wilhelm Scream” and “In Between Days”.

23. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope (73, 13)
151. The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (56, 4)
234. Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (52, 4)
106. Bon Iver - Holocene (49, 2)
In the only real dominating victory of the week, Janelle wrecks everyone in sight. Monáe will try and keep the momentum going this upcoming week, as “Tightrope” faces “Pyramids”, “Glory Box”, and “Bloodbuzz Ohio” in the first week of round 2.

207. Tame Impala - Elephant (69, 9)
178. The Who - Pinball Wizard (66, 9)
79. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp (49, 4)
50. Solange - Losing You (46, 1)
In a true two-horse race, Tame Impala beats The Who…barely. Next round the song will face “Fuck You”, “Enjoy the Silence” and “Into My Arms”.

Dammit! I just missed the vote. I would have been enough to get "Hurricane" to number one.
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...
