Except for the first and the seventh, not really difficult.

Passion Pit-arried Away
Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1
Tammi Terrell-All I Do is Think about You
Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett)-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
Triffids-Red Pony
The Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly
Quintette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swing
Andre Piazzola and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur

I did not vote for Kashiwa Daisuke-Stella this time but for saying how I like this "song", my wife bought the CD for my birthday

(and be careful, the link for Kashiwa Daisuke point to the Tammi Terrell's song.

Round of sixteen got a bit tougher, but the last two were the only judgment calls.

National-Exile (Vilify)

It's my nomination. Need I say more?

Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1

Bombast vs. Subtlety. Although Tantra has grown on me lately, Satie still has a smooth, calming ballad for easy listening or studying.

Kashiwa Daisuke-Stella

Friggin' amazing and experimental. This song deserves at least a Final Four showing!

Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett)-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead

This song emerged as another contender. And I totally see why. It's novel, catchy, and has enough spirit to carry it far.

Triffids-Red Pony

As good as Cuomo was on second listen, Triffids are better. It's funny how I actually voted against them last round. Oh well, I guess it depends on mood.

Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly

No problems this time. The winner of Pointers-Harper would always dominate the rest of the bracket. Pointer Sisters' tour de force blows away JB's admittedly fun song.

Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swing

Both songs I had to relisten to. They are actually more similar than you think. Both use unusual styles, both have a large number of people on them, and they are both experimental in they're own way. I almost went with Anais, but after hearing the opening strings of "Minor's Swing", I knew who'd walk away with this!

REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

"Vuelvo al Sur" is still an excellent piece. But good guitar and admittedly strong lyrics here give REM a slight edge.

Wow, lots of good songs made it! The matchups were frustrating to me, though...

16. Passion Pit-Carried Away
14. The National-Exile (Vilify)

Ugh, not my favorite group. This is one of the better National songs, so even though I don't like 'em much, they win.

3. Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1
4. Tantra-Hills of Katmandu

Why did these two have to be paired up?!? Both perfect examples of very very different things, Satie's maybe just a little more perfect.

1. Kashiwa Daisuke-Stella
8. Tammi Terrell-All I Do is Think about You

Stella remains an all-time favorite. I very much enjoy the Tammi Terrell, but no chance here.

5. Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett)-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
12. Gnarls Barkley-Who's Gonna Save my Soul

Two very good more recent tracks, but the CN Tower wins fairly easily.

15. Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine
11. Triffids-Red Pony

I've tried a lot with the Triffids, and this is probably my favorite of theirs, though I still don't love 'em. Still a clear winner.

2. The Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly
6. Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it to Death

Too much funkiness for one bracket! Very hard to vote against the JB's, but it's just not quite up to the challenge.

7. Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why We Build the Wall
9. Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor Swing

A very hard call to make...

10. Astor Piazzolla and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur
13. REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

The tango keeps dispatching modern rock! First Radiohead, and now R.E.M.?

Passion Pit - Carried Away vs. The National - Exile (Vilify)
In all honesty, this was probably the hardest match-up of the week, simply because of how much I've grown to love Passion Pit's little ditty over the past few months... "Exile" is much better, but this still hurts a little :text-imsorry:

Erik Satie - Gymnopedie 1 vs. Tantra - Hills of Katmandu
Despite my best efforts, Tantra still remains a pleasant but thoroughly forgettable experience.

Kashiwa Daisuke - Stella vs. Tammi Terrell - All I Do is Think about You
Out of respect for Mrs. Terrell, I won't say that this is a blow-out.

Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett) - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead vs. Gnarls Barkley - Who's Gonna Save my Soul
Gnarls, you had to put down one of my favorites to get to this point... The very least you can do is defeat the last underwhelming song of the competition to make up for it

Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine vs. Triffids - Red Pony
Rivers' misery has started to grow on me...

The Pointer Sisters - Going Down Slowly vs. Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doin' it to Death
Screw slowly, I hope this doesn't go down at all :happy-partydance:

Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown - Why we Build the Wall vs. Quinette du Hot Club de France - Minor's Swing
I'm feeling Jazzy today.

Andre Piazzola and Robert Goyeneche - Vuelvo al Sur vs. REM - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

Not original comments this time, only quotes from non-professional writers:

Passion Pit - Carried Away (2012) vs. The National - Exile (Vilify) (2011)
"Beautiful and eerie; delivered in a way that steals your mind, your sanity, [your heart]. Marbles on glass, my friend, marbles on fucking glass" (dunya, Rateyourmusic user)

Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No. 1 (1888) vs. Tantra - Hills of Katmandu (1979)
"[Satie] music is like smoke on leather, and rain on concrete. A constant paradox but also a close companion. Gentle, smooth, and silky, as well as rough, abrasive, and saddening... often at the same time." (foxtrot_stowaway, Rateyourmusic user)

Kashiwa Daisuke - Stella (2007) vs. Tammi Terrell - All I Do Is Think About You (2002)
"You could genuinely take any piece of art music from the last 100 years and find a piece of it here. And I'm not just taking 'art' to mean 'classical' here - there are fragments of Brian Eno, John Coltrane, and even the likes of Arcturus and Godspeed You! Black Emperor amongst the Terry Riley and the Alban Berg and the Iannis Xenakis and the Karlheinz Stockhausen and whatever else. The 36 minutes almost don't feel adequate. It's a genuine stunner." (Iai, Rateyourmusic user)

Final Fantasy [Owen Pallett] - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead (2005) vs. Gnarls Barkley - Who's Gonna Save My Soul (2008)
"A voice so sweet and sad. Sounds like eyes closing before a nap you hope will last a lifetime." (saltpeanut, Rateyourmusic user)

Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine (2007) vs. The Triffids - Red Pony (1983)
"I don't care how this sounds. My girlfriend and I just listened to this song, we're in a long distance relationship, she's in Florida, I'm in Pennsylvania. We're skyping and we both just broke down and cried because of the immense beauty of this song." (Noah Volain, You Tube user)

The Pointer Sisters - Going Down Slowly (1975) vs. Fred Wesley and the J.B.'s - Doing It to Death (1973)
"Back when they were younger, a little more bad-ass, and not slicked up for the '80s. This is really fun, and surprisingly funky, stuff." (sonofsamiam, Acclaimed Music Forum user)

Anaïs Mitchell feat. Greg Brown - Why We Build the Wall (2010) vs. Quintette du Hot Club de France - Minor's Swing (1937)
"The retold myth of Orpheus search for his beloved Eurydice in the underworld can be easily read as a status report of a present, in which new urbanism, post-industrialism and the trend to build walls in order to protect property and to preserve “freedom” are all around." (collegelab, blogger)

Ástor Piazzolla y Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur (1988) vs. R.E.M. - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) (1982)
"The song has been covered by many artists, such as Caetano Veloso and Mercedes Sosa, however on this CD, Roberto Goyeneche sings the vocal version of this song with such authority that the other, albeit good, versions pale by comparison." (yofriend, Rateyourmusic user)

Passion Pit-Carried Away vs. The National-Exile (Vilify)

A difficult choice, but I went with Passion Pit because they surprise me more. Exile (Vilify) is a great track, but also the kind of thing I knew The National could pull of.

Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1vs. Tantra-Hills of Katmandu

Nice contrast here. I go for the epic.

Kashiwa Daisuke-Stella vs. Tammi Terrell-All I Do is Think about You

The easiest choice of the week. My favorite remaining track versus a song that doesn't do much for me.

Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett)-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead vs. Gnarls Barkley-Who's Gonna Save my Soul

Tough choice.

Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine vs. Triffids-Red Pony

In my opinion Longtime Sunshine should never have gotten past round 1 and nothing since has changed my mind. The weakest remaining song.

The Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly vs. Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it to Death

Another easy choice.

Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why we Build the Wallvs. Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swing

The most difficult match-up. I'd like to see both advance, but I have to choose and Mitchell sounds a little more fresh.

Andre Piazzola and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur vs. REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

Yes, it is REM doing what they do well, but it just grabs me more than Vuelvo al Sur.

And once again, "Vuelvo al Sur" is locked in a tie. Both it and "Carnival of Sorts" have nine votes.

I would have retracted it giving it to "Vuelvo al Sur", but that doesn't really seem fair.

So, for the second week in a row, next vote wins. Go for it!

Now the group this week is OFFICIALLY closed. Winners move onto the next round, losers go home.

Interesting note: No song in bracket play with 10+ votes has lost. At least, not after this round.

Passion Pit-Carried Away: 5
The National-Exile (Vilify): 13

This match started off fairly close. Passion Pit even led 2-1, but the National do it again and win in dominating fashion, as they are prone to do.

Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1: 11
Tantra-Hills of Katmandu: 7

The most intriguing matchup this week. The most dominant song in group play lost most of its momentum, but subtlety beats bombast ever so slightly this match.

Kashiwa Daisuke-Stella: 12
Tammi Terrell-All I Do is Think about You: 7

The favorite hit a rough spot. Tammi led 6-5 late, but "Stella" roared through the weekend. Much like Satie, Daisuke has not been as dominant as group play suggested.

Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett)-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead: 14
Gnarls Barkley-Who's Gonna Save my Soul?: 5

You know the drill. Owen Pallett always puts up the most dominant performance of the week. However, he shouldn't rest too easy. "Stella" is next.

Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine: 7
Triffids-Red Pony: 10

Stop me if you heard this before. Triffids start off strong, falter a bit, but still win by a slight margin. Same old song and dance. Rivers, who had one of the tourney's biggest surprises, cut it close after trailing 6-0, but to no avail.

Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly: 12
Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it to Death: 6

In this old-school showdown, the Pointers did not relent. Continuing their winning ways, they cruise to the semis. They are one of the few songs to ontinue the momentum they had in group play.

Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why we Build the Wall: 11
Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swing: 6

Was a fairly close math, but Anais is the longest lasting runner-up, proving the strength of the Plant Group by adancing to the quarters.

I actually predicted the Top 8 during group play based on your tastes and the results there. "Minor's Swing" was the only one of my Projected Top 8 to lose.

Astor Piazzola and Roberto Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur: 9
REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) : 10

"Vuelvo al Sur" yet again tied a group winner. This time, though, they are on the losing end of the swing vote as GucciLittlePiggy sends REM to the next round.

Here are your quarterfinalists! Be sure to remember these songs (or any songs from the tourney, really) for the next song poll. Which, given the current pattern, should be sometime next year!
