Unacclaimed 2.0 Round of 32: Part 2

Post by whuntva »

OK, here we go with the second half the elimination bracket.

Updated look at the bracket here shows us the bottom half is still yet to be played.

Rules:
[*]Vote ONE song in each pairing.
[*]Votes one point apiece.
[*]Tie results in extended time for that one matchup only.
[*]Single-elimination; song is out after losing.
[*]Comments highly encouraged, but not required.

NEW RULE: As host, I can retract my own vote in the case of a tie.

Poll Closes Sunday, 19 October at 11:59 pm UTC

BRACKET PART II:

The Box Tops-I Shall Be Released vs. Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine (song proper ends at 3:06)

Triffids-Red Pony vs.New Radicals-Mother, we Just Can't Get Enough
The Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly vs. Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man

Fred Wesley and the JB's-Don' it to Death vs. Eddie Kendricks-Eddie's Love
No, I did not intend to have both Bruce's picks face each other. It just worked out that way.

Max Berlin-Elle et Moi vs. Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why we Build the Wall
Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swingvs. Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and Duke of Iron-Calypso War

Radiohead-Talk Show Host vs. Astor Piazzolla and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur

ONLY THIS MATCHUP IS STILL OPEN!!

REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Tops) vs. Irma Thomas-Ruler of my Heart

Get voting and have fun!

Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine

Another matchup between songs I gave one point in group stage. On second listen, it appears Rivers delivered a heartfelt, moving song, while Box Tops remain bland and failed to connect.

New Radicals-Mother, we Just Can't get Enough

My tastes just pulled off an upset! I thought the nostalgic favorite from a band I loved would take it easily. But on second listen, the upbeat pop tune from a guy I only have one album from gets the nod. Funny how things work out.

PASS

I can't decide! I guess I like "Going Down Slowly" for its music, "I Hate the White Man" for lyrics. Every time I hear them both, one trumps the other and I notice something great. So I won't bother picking this one. Call it a draw!

Eddie Kendricks-Eddie's Love

I kinda misjudged Eddie as well. He seems to have a great soul ballad that I dismissed as too heavy-handed in group stage. Here, he sounds more sincere. I guess it grew on me.

Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why we Build the Wall

Hadestown is one of those albums that seems like it should be acclaimed but isn't. I mean, AnyDecentMusic? had it as their highest rated album OF ALL TIME until Frank Ocean came around. Whatever. "Elle et Moi" is still catchy, but repetitive. Point goes to Anais.

Quinette du Hot Club-Minor's Swing

This is such an earworm. I had no excuse to mis-title "Calypso War" in group stage. For that, I humbly apologize. I almost felt like giving it a pity vote, but Django's great string quintet wins fairly easily. And...I'd be lying if I said this wasn't my favorite song of the week.

Radiohead-Talk Show Host

Two more songs that did almost nothing for me. All but two of Radiohead's albums made my top 500, with the "Big Four" making my Top 100 and Three hitting the Top 50! But "Talk Show Host" does not move me any. However, it was still better than the vanilla tango, "Vuelvo al Sur"

REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

REM had a tough bracket. That's why I downvoted it in group stage. This time, it cakewalks to the next round.

Following the one-line comments game:

The Box Tops - I Shall Be Released (1969) vs. Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine (2007)
Dylan shall not be released by the Box Tops, I'd better follow Cuomo to Vermont or Maine. With longtime sunshine upon us.

The Triffids - Red Pony (1983) vs. New Radicals - Mother We Just Can't Get Enough (1998)
I just can't get enough of this lovely Spanish-influenced exquisitely-orchestrated song that opened the Triffids first album.

The Pointer Sisters - Going Down Slowly (1975) vs. Roy Harper - I Hate the White Man (1970)
Yes, I hate the white man too, give me black women anyday, especially as beautiful and talented as the Pointer Sisters.

Fred Wesley and the J.B.'s - Doing It to Death (1973) vs. Eddie Kendricks - Eddie's Love (1972)
As whuntva said, the battle of the Bruce. Eddie's smooth or Wesley & Brown's raw? Well, J&B for me. On the rocks please.

Max Berlin - Elle et moi (1978) vs. Anaïs Mitchell feat. Greg Brown - Why We Build the Wall (2010)
Gainsbourg-goes-to-disco is nice but Anaïs' wall is sublime, going back to Orpheus myth to explain the actual foreign policy.

Quintette du Hot Club de France - Minor's Swing (1937) vs. Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great and the Duke of Iron - Calypso War (1999)
Exotic vintage war. Trinidadian Calypso or Gypsy Manouche? Both delicious and great but Reinhardt and Grapelli better.

Radiohead - Talk Show Host (1996) vs. Ástor Piazzolla y Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur (1988)
North vs. South. Radiohead's insane and claustrophobic tale against the melancholy of tango. Back to South, I love South.

R.E.M. - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) (1982) vs. Irma Thomas - Ruler of My Heart (1963)
Irma, with pain in my heart my vote goes to the early R.E.M. angular jangle (Byrds meets Gang of Four) trademark sound.

Alright, now I'm convinced that Whuntva is a very nasty guy who plays with the feelings of fellow forumers. Last week he pitted my two favorite songs against each other. I thought that was a coincidence, but out host proves once and for all that he has a degree in sadism, because he simply went and did it again. The victims this time around are The Pointer Sisters and Roy Harper. Too make matters worse, The Box Tops meet Rovers Cuomo: two songs that I think shouldn't have proceeded in the first round.
Way to go Whuntva :x ;)

The Box Tops-I Shall Be Released vs. Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine (song proper ends at 3:06)
The Box Tops deliver an unnecessary cover, but I still prefer it over the slightly annoying Cuomo.

Triffids-Red Pony vs.New Radicals-Mother, we Just Can't Get Enough
I like the song by New Radicals, but it's still an easy choice.

The Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly vs. Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
Pretty much a tie, but I'm more in the mood for the swing of the Sisters today.

Fred Wesley and the JB's-Don' it to Death vs. Eddie Kendricks-Eddie's Love
The type of soul that Kendricks delivers rarely does anything for me, so another easy choice.

Max Berlin-Elle et Moi vs. Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why we Build the Wall
Both good, without ever making me doubt that Mitchell and Brown are the clear winners here.

Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swing vs. Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and Duke of Iron-Calypso War
One of only two tight matchups today. The Calypso War sounds unique and grows, but Minor Swing still has the slight edge.

Radiohead-Talk Show Host vs. Astor Piazzolla and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur
A safe choice perhaps, but Piazzolla and Goyeneche don't really challenge it for me.

REM-Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars) vs. Irma Thomas-Ruler of my Heart
Another case in which it simply my taste for a certain genre in favor of another that decides my choice.
I like though, how almost everyone keeps posting the REM song under the title Box Tops. Seems everyone secretly loves that band a lot

I would not mind, if the following 8 songs went through to the next round:

The Box Tops - I Shall Be Released
The Triffids - Red Pony
Roy Harper - I Hate The White Man
Eddie Kendricks - Eddie's Love
Max Berlin - Elle Et Moi
Lord Invader, Duke Of Iron, Macbeth The Great - Calypso War
Astor Piazzolla - Vuelvo Al Sur (featuring Roberto Goyeneche)
R.E.M. - Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars)

That means, both my nominations would win again 8-)

If ever there were two songs that are victims of bad draws for me, it would have to be “Bird Balloons” and “Why We Build the Wall.” I give both of them a 9, and they’ve now each faced both of my favorite songs of the entire game, “Stella” and “Elle et Moi.” It reminds me of every year when the college basketball tournament rolls around and my eight favorite teams all end up in the same region.

The Box Tops - I Shall Be Released: Certainly not the best recording of this, but the song itself propels it
Triffids - Red Pony: Good, not great, but crushes the annoying New Radicals
The Pointer Sisters - Going Down Slowly: Love it
Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doin' it to Death: Also love it
Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown - Why We Build the Wall: Close one, but I love Anais' moxie doing a folk opera
Quinette du Hot Club de France - Minor Swing: Tough choice, Django wins in the end
Astor Piazzolla and Robert Goyeneche - Vuelvo al Sur: Goin' with the tango, but there are others by him I like more
Irma Thomas - Ruler of My Heart: People need to listen to more early 60s soul

"Going Down Slowly" & "Why we Build the Wall" are my 2nd & 5th favourite songs of this selection, so the draw is unfortunate one way or the other (just like Stella vs Bird Balloons).

The Box Tops - I Shall Be Released vs. Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine
In the end, this came down to how well the "massive bludgeoning hammer of pathos" i remembered from "Longtime Sunshine" held up, and you know what, it sounded pretty fantastic.

Triffids - Red Pony vs. New Radicals - Mother, We Just Can't Get Enough
Hmmm, lets see how long this streak of difficult match ups can go on... Anywhose, the New Radicals track is more fun (if a lot lot more self-indulgent and smug), so I'll give it to them.

The Pointer Sisters - Going Down Slowly vs. Roy Harper - I Hate the White Man
On paper this is a really tough match up, as these are two of the best songs the game has offered, but in practice, the Pointer Sisters ran away with it.

Fred Wesley and the JB's - Don' it to Death vs. Eddie Kendricks - Eddie's Love
Come on Luke... "Doin' It to Death" has all the trademarks of classic funk laid out, carefully arranged to ensure maximum pleasure... So why can't you just connect with it already?

Max Berlin - Elle et Moi vs. Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown - Why we Build the Wall
I might have to check out *Hadestown* now, this is pretty intriguing.

Quinette du Hot Club de France - Minor's Swing vs. Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and Duke of Iron - Calypso War
I don't deny that these are both quality songs, but "Calypso War" just comes from a genre that hasn't done much for me up to this point.

Radiohead - Talk Show Host vs. Astor Piazzolla and Robert Goyeneche - Vuelvo al Sur
Typical Radiohead is typical. Apparently Astor is rocking a bandoneon on this track. Bandoneon > Typical :D

REM - Carnival of Sorts (Box Tops) vs. Irma Thomas - Ruler of my Heart
Hmmm... R.E.M. is always rather enjoyable, but Irma has a rather dark undertone that grabs my attention... Kinda.

Hope that helped, Whuntva :music-listening:

Sorta. In breaking one tie, you opened up another.

Radiohead-Talk Show Host: 8
Astor Piazzola and Roberty Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur: 8

We have a little over an hour. Last vote here wins it, unless you vote for Box Tops or Lord Invader.

EDIT: Well, shoot! My worst fears have been realized.

If anyone online has not already voted and is reading this, we need ONE...MORE...VOTE! But as for tiebreaker rules, only this matchup, please.

While we wait for the deciding vote for Radiohead-Piazzola, let's see who will be moving on.

I must say, this half was much more competitive. When last week, all winners advaned and there was one moderately close match, this week had only THREE victories greater than five points, two runners-up advancing, and of course one tie, which is why this week isn't up yet.

The Box Tops: I Shall Be Released: 9
Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine: 10

Our first "upset". Luke was the swing vote, meaning Rivers plays on. Box Tops held a sizeable lead that slowly dwindled during the week.

Triffids-Red Pony: 10
New Radials-Mother, We Just Can't Get Enough: 8

"Red Pony" clings tenuously to a lead they held by as many as seven. The surge was called off before we could have a crisis situation.

The Pointer Sisters-Going Down Slowly: 11
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man: 6

The match I thought would be closest ended up being a blowout. Pointer Sisters continue their dominance.

Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it to Death: 16
Eddie Kendricks-Eddie's Love: 5

One of two sixteen-point songs this week, JB had the other big victory and wins the Battle of the Bruce.

Max Berlin-Elle et Moi: 8
Anais Mitchell feat. Greg Brown-Why we Build the Wall: 10

The other song that didn't win its group but still advanced here. She actually held a large lead before Max caught up over the weekend.

Quinette du Hot Club de France-Minor's Swing: 9
Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and Duke of Iron-Calypso War: 8

And the one I thought would be a blowout ended up being super close. Luke was once again the swing vote here.

Radiohead-Talk Show Host: 7
Astor Piazzola and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur: 8

You all know what's holding up the week. You obviously cannot vote the same song twice, but if you did not vote this match or have not voted this week, please oh please be our swing vote!

Of course, I could always retract mine giving it to "Vuelvo al Sur". Would you prefer that?

REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars): 16
Irma Thomas-Ruler of my Heart: 4

The other big winner this week. REM actually has an outside chance this tourney with a convining vitory in both group and bracket play.
