Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 10

Post by Listyguy »

Following a week with almost all song from after 1990 (11/16), we get a week with five songs from the 60’s.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.
24. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
105. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
152. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)

88. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
169. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)

1. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
4. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)
6. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)
8. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
Laura is far from the usual Bat for Lashes song, but that's a damn stunning change of pace.
Really close call after that, I'll give a slight edge to Three 6 Mafia thanks to the slick production and the various changes of beats that make the song such a thrilling ride even with an average chorus.
I never really got why Two Weeks was the consensus pick as far as Grizzly Bear go when it follows the wonderful Southern Point but it's still a very nice song.

2. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
5. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)
10. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
14. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)
Robyn has some of the best singles of the past 10 years, it's hard to tell which is the best between Be Mine, Dancing on My Own and With Every Heartbeat and each would have got my vote here. With Every Heartbeat might be my fav though, thanks to her perfect delivery and Kleerup beautiful production.
I wouldn't mind too much if Phoenix made it to the next round, much more if it was one of the other two.
With a Little Help From my Friends, while fun to sing along, seems to be one of those songs that made to this year's bracketology thanks to a well-known cover more than on their own merits (see Hallelujah and an obvious one in bracket 4... some might add Hurt to that list but I'd disagree) and Money is 30 iconic seconds and would have made a great 2 minute song.

3. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)
9. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
11. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
15. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)
I think Time Will does the same as Blind better, but still easy pick here. I would not be surprised if Blind lost to Atlantic City and ended the highest ranked song not to make it to next round though. (unless My Girls gets a tough bracket)
As I said before I don't get which song from the Streets first album are acclaimed, far from the best cuts from the album in my book.

7. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (1967)
12. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)
13. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
16. The Who - Substitute (1966)
As I also said, I don't think All Along the Watchtower would be ranked that high without the Hendrix cover... still good enough to win this bracket.

105. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
152. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)

Difficult round. Top 3 are among my favorites.

216. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
88. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
169. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)

105. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
152. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)
233. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)
Two excellent songs and two... songs?

169. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)
41. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)
216. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
88. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
The first three songs are really enjoyables and I never understand the "hype" for Robyn!

250. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
7. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)
122. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)
135. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
The more the time go, the more I love Depeche Mode, I don't know why. Hercules is strong. And no love for the third and the fourth.

98. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
31. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)
159. The Who - Substitute (1966)

Two Weeks
Laura
Stay Fly
Single Ladies

No song clicks, but ANYTHING beats "Single Ladies".

Money
Lisztomania
With a Little Help from my Friends
With Every Heartbeat

Money takes it easy. Not even one of the best songs of its year and a good Beatles tune could top it.

Weak Become Heroes
Never Let Me Down Again
Atlantic City
Blind

"Blind"'s acclaim astounds me. I never heard it in 2008, and would have never listed it on any list. Is there something I'm missing? "Weak Become Heroes", with a bit of a nostalgic connection, wins in a gut call.

Wouldn't it Be Nice
1901
All Along the Watchtower
Substitute

Sorry, "1901". I love ya like a brother, but one of the Beach Boys' best deserves it more.

Two Weeks
Laura
Single Ladies
Stay Fly
Wow, this is a pretty shitty bracket. The last two are awful, and the first two would be in the cellar of these other brackets.

Money
With a Little Help From My Friends
Lisztomania
With Every Heartbeat
Pink Floyd is the clear winner here; 2 and 3 are nearly interchangeable and Robyn is just not good.

Atlantic City
Blind
Never Let Me Down Again
Weak Become Heroes
Bruce Springsteen easily has the best song of the week in my opinion. "Blind" is a good song, mostly because of Anthony, but it's not even in the same league as The Boss.

All Along the Watchtower
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Substitute
1901
Top to bottom an excellent bracket. First two are especially good.

105. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
24. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
152. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)
233. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)
It's funny just how much opinions differ, I consider this to be the strongest bracket of the week by a wide, wide margin... "Laura" is gorgeous in every sense of the word (I don't get why "Daniel" still gets more acclaim, but I hope that changes soon), "Two Weeks" would be here just on the strength of the piano riff and "Ah-Oh-Ah-Ooooohs", the utterly fantastic music video isn't even the best part of "Single Ladies", and for good measure, Three 6 Mafia would probably still top the third bracket :D

41. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)
88. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
169. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)
216. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
I might just be an incredibly positive mood right now, either way although Pink Floyd and the Beatles put in "surprisingly" solid efforts, the 00's continue to kick ass.

7. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)
250. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
135. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
122. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)
I guess we can agree on one thing Listyguy - Antony is the factor that makes this Graeco-Roman orgy worth attending. After that, Depeche Mode swipes second place after approximately 1 second of synth, and Bruce beats out a rather subdued Mike Skinner.

98. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
31. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)
159. The Who - Substitute (1966)
226. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (1967)
Dylan will probably still win this one (it could be worse, "Watchtower" is at least tolerable), but that won't stop me from making him work for it

EDIT: My "Stay Fly" zinger was written before I remembered just how glorious Antony's vocals were.

2. Atlantic City

I found this to be a very mediocre week in general, only 4 of these are in my top 2000...

5. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
11. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)
13. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
15. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)

I don't HATE any of these, but don't love any of them either. Bat for Lashes is typically very good (though not astounding), Stay Fly is amusing, Grizzly Bear is generally overrated, and while I don't hate Beyonce like some I don't really need to hear Single Ladies again.

4. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)
9. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
14. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
16. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)

Listzomania is really fun, still my fave Phoenix track. I like the Robyn/Kleerup well enough, though there are other Robyn singles I prefer. The Beatles and Floyd tracks are ones I find particularly annoying out of their catalogs.

1. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
3. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
8. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)
12. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)

One of Springsteen's best here, it easily dusts one of DM's best. "Blind" is good but seems to have lost punch with time, and I never much cared about the Streets.

2. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
6. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (1967)
7. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)
10. The Who - Substitute (1966)

Very strong group, with Beach Boys as the easy winner. Watchtower climbs up because its such a good song on its own (though Jimi's will always demolish it). And I love early Who, but Substitute a little less than many of their singles from that time.

1. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)
2. Bat for Lashes - Laura
3. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
4. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly

1. Phoenix - Lisztomania
2. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends
3. Pink Floyd - Money
4. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat

Great bracket, featuring what is easily my favorite PF song, and a definite case of SHTB4.

1. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind
2. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again
3. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City
4. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes

1. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice
2. Phoenix - 1901
3. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower
4. The Who - Substitute

24. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
105. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
152. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)
233. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)
"Daniel" would win, but "Laura" is not "Daniel". The last two are OK.

169. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)
88. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
41. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)
216. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
"With Every Heartbeat" is not "Be Mine!", but is just good enough to take a very close contest for second.

7. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)
135. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
250. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
122. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)
Worst bracket of the week. "Blind" takes it, but why is it acclaimed when "The Dull Flame Of Desire" isn't?

31. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)
159. The Who - Substitute (1966)
98. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
226. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (1967)
Quality bracket, but not difficult to rank.

Don't tell me you've never cried some manly tears to "Dancing On My Own".

It's state-of-the-art dance pop with just the right amount of heart. Not necessarily my favorite thing, but I've liked everything I've heard from her. The complete Body Talk album is a near-masterpiece.

Now for me, I would ask the same question about Phoenix. Good music, but I'm a lyrics person and Mars' words always strike me as either poor translations or nonsensical placeholders (a la "Scrambled Eggs") for the real words that he forgot to add later.

1. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
2. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
3. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)
4. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)

Weakest bracket of the week for me, but paradoxically my easiest #1 – “Laura” is a gorgeous, moving song, by far the best I’ve heard from BfL.

1. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
2. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)
3. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)
4. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)

My roots betray me again, as classic rock trumps modern pop. I love every clinking sound effect and dirty sax growl on “Money,” but that melody and that bassline and those backing vocals put the one and only Billy Shears over the top for me.

1. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
2. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
3. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)
4. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)

I realize this looks like a repeat of bracket 2, but it really isn’t – it’s a real tossup among #’s 1 through 3 (I like “Blind” and its soaring Antony vocals just fine, but it falls short for me). In the end, the heartfelt signature track of Nebraska edges out DM’s sinister synth-pop (“as long as I remember who’s wearing the trousers,” indeed).

1. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
2. The Who - Substitute (1966)
3. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (1967)
4. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)

As you might imagine, this is by far my favorite bracket of the week – I wish #’s 2 and 3 had each been in a different bracket above, and I kind of wish “1901” wasn’t forced to compete with all of them. But the magnificent opening track from Pet Sounds would probably win no matter what its competition was.

Whatever it is, I'm missing it too. It doesn't help she sounds like a Madonna clone to me.

It's state-of-the-art dance pop with just the right amount of heart. Not necessarily my favorite thing, but I've liked everything I've heard from her. The complete Body Talk album is a near-masterpiece.
Interesting. I'm not a huge fan of dance pop (save Madonna and a few other songs) so that's probably the root of my problem.

A very weak line-up this week. I only really dislike one song here, but the rest mostly doesn't live up to the high quality standard the AM list has. In most weeks, few of these songs would have deserved to get through to the next round, in my opinion.

2. Bat for Lashes - Laura (2012)
3. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (2009)
15. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (2005)
16. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (2008)

The week starts actually good, because Grizzly Bear and Bat for Lashes are the first two songs on the play list and they deliver. Sadly, Single Ladies is the only track I dislike this week and Stay Fly is instantly forgettable (I just heard it and can't recall it).

5. Pink Floyd - Money (1973)
6. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (1967)
9. Phoenix - Lisztomania (2009)
13. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)

A decent bracket. I really like the first three, even though there are much better songs by Pink FLoyd and The Beatles and Lisztomania is not masterpiece material either. Robyn just isn't my cup of tea at all. Perhaps I don't have the ear for the genre, but it sounds like generic pop to me. Not bad exactly, but nothing to write home about.

4. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (2002)
8. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (1982)
11. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
12. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (2008)

The weakest bracket, even though it doesn't contain a really weak track. Weak become heroes indeed, when The Streets deliver a surprisingly strong song. Springsteen is one of my favorite artists, but honestly, Atlantic City isn't even in my top 5 from Nebraska alone. It's still good though. We can file Depeche Mode just like Robyn in the cabinet that says "Just not for me", though the second half is quite good, I admit. Similarly, Blind gets by on the vocals of Anthony, but I'll be damned if I know why such an unoriginal sounding song (to my ears at least) has made the list in such a high position.

1. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (1967)
7. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (1966)
10. The Who - Substitute (1966)
14. Phoenix - 1901 (2009)

If you read my comments this week you'd almost think I'm in a rebellious mood or something. Now we've come this far let me say that I'm probably the only person in the whole world (including even Dylan himself) who likes Dylan's version of All Along the Watchtower more than Hendrix' admittedly amazing cover. Something about the way he delivers his lyrics and the the more understated, but still atmospheric guitar playing gets me every time. It's the week's only masterpiece. The Beach Boys are on fine form too, though they also don't get the best song of the album. Similarly Substitute is a more than fine Who song, that also loses points because they have done clearly better work. Finally, 1901 misses the fun and the melody of Lisztomania to me and is easily last. This is the best bracket I guess.

There seems to be a general consensus that Anthony makes "Blind" a lot better. So that leads to the question...where would the song rank without him? Would it even be considered a great song?

I don't think you can just take out a central element of a song. A lot of my favorite songs wouldn't be anywhere near the same level if they didn't have the same vocalist.

True. I'd say a good comparison would be Dylan's songs without brilliant lyrics or a Hendrix song without incredible guitars.

24. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (80, 14)
105. Bat for Lashes - Laura (67, 6)
152. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (51, 4)
233. Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly (42, 0)
In a weak bracket, Grizzly Bear feasted to advance to round two. On the other side of the coin, “Stay Fly” becomes the second song in the tournament to not get any first place votes. Next round “Two Weeks” gets “Idioteque”, “Monster” and the winner of the bracket below this one.

169. Pink Floyd - Money (75, 11)
41. Phoenix - Lisztomania (61, 6)
88. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (53, 4)
216. The Beatles - With a Little Help from My Friends (51, 3)
For the second straight week, Pink Floyd dominates to get a song through to the next round. We now have our first full bracket of the 16, with “Money” facing off against “Idiotequq”, “Two Weeks” and “Monster” next round.

135. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (70, 10)
7. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (65, 8)
250. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (64, 4)
122. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes (41, 2)
In a thrilling comeback, “Atlantic City” overcomes a decent sized deficit from the middle of the week (and being in third place) to win the bracket. By doing so, “Blind” becomes the only top 10 seed to be eliminated so far. Also of note is that “Atlantic City” is the first 80s song to advance. Next round Bruce gets “Suite: Judy Blues Eyes” and two TDBs.

98. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (72, 10)
226. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (62, 8)
31. Phoenix - 1901 (58, 5)
159. The Who - Substitute (48, 1)
Beach Boys cruise (or surf) to victory. Next round they will face fellow 1967 alum “Suzanne” as well as “The Rip”.
