2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
The 2014 All-time Album Poll is now officially closed. *
This thread is for non-results related discussion, trivia, added extras and SPOILERS! Some of our esteemed colleagues are so good at this that they will undoubtedly post the top 500 here before I finish tabulating the results, so if you want to remain a results virgin, best to stay away.
*I have ten lists yet to enter, which means my data table will take me until mid-morning tomorrow (western Canada time). If you have not yet submitted a list, the procrastinators deadline is my last keystroke of data entry. After that I will start posting clues here for the data hounds while I double check results and start preparing the roll out.
Our 46 (edit) participants this year are:
Kingoftonga, Brad, Zorg, Moonbeam, Chambord, SJner, Listyguy, Daniel, Rocky Racoon, Miguel, Chris K, Chevisan, Machine Man, GucciLittlePiggy, Dan, Nicolas, Michel, Harold, MaximumBeef, Luvulong, DaveC, Bruno, Pierre, Honorio, Nassim, Antonius, Henrik, Stephan, Sonofsamiam, BonnieLaurel, Jeff, LiveInPhoenix, Nick, Stone37, Vanilla Fire 1000, Schaeffer, Henry, McJagger, Whuntva, Gillingham, BleuPanda, Jirin, DocBrown and Romain.
PlasticRam and Jackson, sorry to miss you!
Edit 2: And OtisRedding snuck in under the wire for 47 participants!
I hope you're as excited as I am to get this underway, and I beg your patience while I do a thorough job of screwing up the results. I hope to kick off the rollout by the weekend.
It has been a great learning experience for me, as a relative newcomer to AM, to spend this much time with your lists, and with the AM database. I have years of new listening to look forward to thanks to your lists. With apologies to Messrs. Marr and Morrisey:
If a ten ton truck
should leave this poll unstuck
to die by your side
well the pleasure - the privilege is mine.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Thanks, DocBrown! Doing the 2013 poll back in January made me realize how much work went into a poll. And I'm certain this all time poll was about 50 times more work than the two polls I ran!
That being said, who's ready for "MBDTF" to crack the top 50???
(And "Random Access Memories" to crack the top 100- you heard it here first, folks).

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I wouldn't be surprised if it cracked the top 30. It was 74 in 2011 only a year after its release. For some reason I thought we had one of these polls in 2012. Am I wrong?Nick wrote:who's ready for "MBDTF" to crack the top 50???

I wasn't here during 2012, but I'm pretty sure that there was a songs poll that year, but no albums poll.Listyguy wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if it cracked the top 30. Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Yep. It was a song poll in 2012. I know that because I participated.

I'm using my extrasensory powers to predict that OK Computer is the #1 album.

Honestly, I don't think it's too far out of reach for Illinoise to somehow get to #1.Live in Phoenix wrote:I'm using my extrasensory powers to predict that OK Computer is the #1 album.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I really hope some other album somehow manages to win. Don't get me wrong, OK Computer is great, but seeing a different number one would be so cool and exciting.Live in Phoenix wrote:I'm using my extrasensory powers to predict that OK Computer is the #1 album.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
First mistake in the poll identified... somehow I left out PlasticRam's list, so we have 45 participants. Sorry, PR!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Well as one AMer who didn't vote for "OK Computer" at all in my list (relistened to it the other day, not as boring as I remembered it to be, but I guess I will never belong to its target audience), I really hope another album will get at #1.Listyguy wrote:I really hope some other album somehow manages to win. And I believe "Random Access Memories" will perform well in the poll, I've seen it on several lists and generally pretty high.

For one, Jackson has posted a list there and not submitted to DocBrown.

Nope, Jackson's list was submitted and entered, just bad typing skills on my part.DaveC wrote:For one, Jackson has posted a list there and not submitted to DocBrown.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I've checked and there are no recommendation lists missing now.
Maybe if "OK Computer" doesn't take the top spot, it will be "The Queen is Dead"

Whoever wins, or whatever the top 100 or top 500 is, this will be regarded as the definitive AM Forum list for a long time. I am so much looking forward to the results, DocBrown!

I would suggest to go look at the results of the previous polls. It has never been close.Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Honestly, I don't think it's too far out of reach for Illinoise to somehow get to #1.Live in Phoenix wrote:I'm using my extrasensory powers to predict that OK Computer is the #1 album.

Hmmm, do you smell it in the air? It's one of my favorite moment in this forum.
And for the winner : like Gary Lineker said for the football : "Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win" I can say "All time albums poll is a simple game; thousand albums in the starting line and at the end, "OK computer" win."

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
It's not about #1 but finding all the unique entries at the lower spots.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Of course, like everytime in this forum. It's not the top of the basket the most important but all the rest. By far, I prefer looking the top 250-500 than the top 1-250.BleuPanda wrote:It's not about #1 but finding all the unique entries at the lower spots.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I'm sorry I couldn't get in my albums list for this poll, but I have been super busy with college lately. Looking very forward to the results, though!

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I think the higher rankings will actually surprise everyone this time around and Billy Joel takes the complete top 10 for himself. Since many members of this forum love classical music it is only natural that his Fantasies & Delusions takes #1. That album title also summarizes this post very well.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Still a few lists to, just like Santa, check twice, and a bit of polish to put on the presentation (oh, hell, let's be honest, I haven't started on the presentation.)
To whet your appetite, here are the 834 albums from the AM Top 3000, which received NO love from the Forum poll. Atop the list is the same sad sack LP that received no votes in Nicolas' poll in 2009. What, nobody loves him but his mother? (and she could be jiving, too.)
I call this the Group W Bench:
Can somebody tell me how to add separators to the list in BBCode? And of course, if you DID vote for one of these albums, let me know!

Can somebody tell me how to add separators to the list in BBCode? And of course, if you DID vote for one of these albums, let me know!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
If I had pushed to a top 500, Girls Can Tell, Smother, Where You Go I Go Too would have one vote.
Usually if I have the rank in column A, the artist in B and the album in C I add a column with something like " =concatenate(A2;") ";A3;" - ";A4) " in it to add the separators, though I think you can do it easily by using some &.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
The votes have been tallied! Duplicates have been eliminated, spellings have been verified, tears have been shed, and within moments I will know what album is most popular with my fellow forumers in 2014!
But you won't!
For now, I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt (well, maybe a small shadow) that 47 voters cast a total of 16008 votes for 5248 albums.
Later today I will start listing the also-rans while I begin to polish the rollout of numbers 500 to one.
Get your bets in, in the next 24 hours, if you're a betting man. Me I'd bet the house on.... good tunes ahead.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Doc, three of the albums on your list above are in my top 400 - Crossing the Red Sea With The Adverts, Aimee Mann's Bachelor No. 2, and Shazam by The Move.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Already caught those, Harold. I was kind of rushing myself this morning to publish something and those were duplicated lines. No problem, your votes are counted.Harold wrote:Doc, three of the albums on your list above are in my top 400 - Crossing the Red Sea With The Adverts, Aimee Mann's Bachelor No. 2, and Shazam by The Move.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Another teaser for you: six songs albums (getting ahead of myself... you get used to that when your name is DocBrown; thanks, Nassim) from outside the AM Top 3000 have joined the Forum Poll Top 500.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Wow...there are some really good albums there! Modest Mouse, Philip Glass, Fucked Up...
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I get the feeling Shaking the Habitual is my highest album to not enter the top 500, but that was expected. The only one above it on my list I have any concern about is Boy in da Corner.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
If I made my list today, Live At The Regal would be my #427.
I ranked Frank's Wild Years and Endless Summer pretty high but I'm most surprised Unhalfbricking didn't get any love.

Also, I just noticed, I did vote for You Forgot It In People. It's #382 on my list. I hope nothing else got left off.

You Forgot It In People got four votes (including mine). Sometimes those duplicate lines (see above) are just embarrassing.BleuPanda wrote:Also, I just noticed, I did vote for You Forgot It In People. It's #382 on my list. I hope nothing else got left off.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Wow ... good albums!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
As of this writing (with #401-500 posted), five of the six promised top 500 entries from outside the AM top 3000 have already appeared: two Jacques Brel albums and three from 2014 (Benji, St. Vincent, and It's Album Time - bit of a surprise, that last one, given its relatively low MCCh ranking). There's already been a prediction that the sixth and final non-top 3000 entry will be another from the current year: current MCCh champ To Be Kind. I think that prediction might be right, unless it's Lost in the Dream. Any other speculations?

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
If it's not a 2014 album then I hope it's one of Nina Simone's shockingly AM top 3000-absent albums.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
A very strong 701-800 IMO. I think it's either Exuma or To Be Kind that's in the the top 500 if there's only six available spots from outside AM 3000. The other one will prolly be 501-700 then.
Edit: Exuma was in the top 500, so I'm happy. Hoping to see To Be Kind between 500 and 700 as that's my fav album from 2014.

I feel like that
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
From the 700s the ones I'm surprised not to see in the top 500 are Again and New Adventures In Hifi.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
As someone who has been championing Todd Terje ever since I heard "Inspector Norse" in late 2012, I'm pleasantly surprised to see his album is the highest ranking 2014 album on our list!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
To be Kind will likely be the highest new entry.
The ONLY reason To be Kind was not on my list was because I actually made it before the album came out. That's right, I anticipated this poll eight moths prior.
I like the results so far. Two albums in my Top 100 already made the cut. I am quite pleased with the tons more still to come.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
The answer's already appeared on the Results thread - it's Exuma.whuntva wrote:To be Kind will likely be the highest new entry.
Presumably To Be Kind finished somewhere between 501-700, which have yet to be posted here.

Welcome to the AM Forum Albums Poll, where even the so-called "also-rans" are amazing. Wow! Can't wait to see 501-600, and really can't wait to see the rest of the top 500.

What with how snarky I am, I've already imagined a particular song playing when someone falls out of contention in the AM betting game. (Hopefully I can live by the Willie Nelson and not die by him.)

Yeah, we could easily expand this to a top 1000 next time.Harold wrote:Welcome to the AM Forum Albums Poll, where even the so-called "also-rans" are amazing. Wow! Can't wait to see 501-600, and really can't wait to see the rest of the top 500.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I'd happily do it when it comes back around, if I'm still actively here in three years. Is next year artists or songs? I'd be open to either, though I'm not sure about 1000 artists.
Also, that was meant as a "we have consistently awesome taste that I'd love to see more" post, not a "why haven't we already expanded" post. You're doing an awesome job with this!
