Back in the day the polls were done every two years. I don't know when it switched to three. I guess that makes more sense since there are three polls. Next year is a songs year by the way.BleuPanda wrote:I'd happily do it when it comes back around, if I'm still actively here in three years. Is next year artists or songs? I was just kidding, BleuPanda; I can't even imagine doing twice as big a poll. Maybe extrapolating for 1000 albums from 500 max'm ballots might work.BleuPanda wrote:I'd happily do it when it comes back around, if I'm still actively here in three years. The scary part is that Henrik manages this feat every year (obviously with some help from all around)

Just e-mailed about a dozen album comments, mostly for the end of the countdown. Would hate for the Top 10/Top 20 to be counted off all quiet-like!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I think 500 is the right max for an albums poll for the ballots, maybe even less (since how much did my #500 vote really effect Here's Little Richard?), but 1000 seems like a nice number for the final results. You've already created them here. I was thinking just treating the extra 500 as part of the final list instead of just extra info.

Alt-J in the 600s is a pleasant surprise. But if everyone loves An Awesome Wave how come nobody else is raving about their new one yet?

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Personally I am against expanding this poll to 1000, just because there aren't enough votes to gather a statistical consensus. I already see things on my ballot that I am pretty sure no one else voted on that just my placement alone put it in the top 1000.BleuPanda wrote:I think 500 is the right max for an albums poll for the ballots, maybe even less (since how much did my #500 vote really effect Here's Little Richard?), but 1000 seems like a nice number for the final results. Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
While you're absolutely right that the pool is not broad enough to be statistically meaningful even at the shallow end of the 500 preferred albums, every album required at least two votes to get into the top 1000, and 981 received three or more votes. The highest ranked album with a single vote (a top-ten vote at that) was #1349. No matter how strange, someone shares your taste.VanillaFire1000 wrote:Personally I am against expanding this poll to 1000, just because there aren't enough votes to gather a statistical consensus. Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Was I the only Hadestown vote?
I agree we shouldn't expand the ballots to 1000, because I think for most people, #501-1000 would be a list of albums they sort of like but don't feel strongly about, so it would increase the advantage to albums more people have listened to.

Totally agreed. But songs should definitely be 1,000. I've expanded my list over the years and definitely have 1,000 songs I love.Jirin wrote:Was I the only Hadestown vote?

I wonder if anyone can do a genuine T1,000 artists list...

A bunch of my favourites in this last batch, dang. But once again, it shows that the selection from 500 to 1000, albeit statistically insignificant, is filled with very strong albums. People here have great tastes.

Some great albums landed in the 501-600 range, a few I'm a bit surprised didn't make it to the top 500. Sleater-Kinney's best albums, Z, Liege and Lief, Grievous Angel.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I'm quite surprised One Beat did better than Dig Me Out (The Woods is a bit too abrasive for AM forum's tastes so that's less of a surprise). Sleater-Kinney never did that well in polls around here so one album in the top 500 is already a nice showing.Jirin wrote:Some great albums landed in the 501-600 range, a few I'm a bit surprised didn't make it to the top 500. After seeing C'Mon and I Could Live In Hope, I had some, well, hope that Things We Lost In The Fire would make it to the top 500 !
Neither Dry nor Rid of Me, and Rid of Me as low as 784, that's quite a surprise !
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
No Modest Mouse in the top 500? That's sad. I just recently decided I liked them and shoved The Moon and Antarctica up to my #48.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
OK, now that the top 500 is past the halfway point (241-250 were posted as I was writing this), and Doc's posted #'s 501-1000, let's use this thread to get down to brass tacks.
There are still 261 entries from the 2001 poll's top 500 that have yet to appear, and let's assume that the new top 250 also includes the following: Channel Orange; good kid, M.A.A.D city; Modern Vampires of the City; Random Access Memories. So that's 265 albums to fill 240 slots (there may still also be a couple of wild-card outliers as well - there have been a few in the 250-300 range, e.g., Dare! - but I tend to doubt it). That means that 25 albums from our 2011 top 500 didn't even make the top 1000 this time around.
Here are the 25 that I think are not going to make it, listed by their 2011 ranks:
263 Scott Walker | Scott 3 |
286 Moby | Play |
294 Go-Betweens | 16 Lovers Lane |
299 Beach Boys | Sunflower |
354 Tracy Chapman | Tracy Chapman |
378 Dinosaur Jr. | You're Living All Over Me |
390 Herbie Hancock | Maiden Voyage |
399 Animal Collective | Sung Tongs |
407 Wilco | Sky Blue Sky |
410 Laura Nyro | New York Tendaberry |
415 Metallica | Ride the Lightning |
416 Tallest Man on Earth | The Wild Hunt |
423 Leonard Cohen | Songs from a Room |
424 Wilco | Being There |
435 Shins | Oh, Inverted World |
438 Van Dyke Parks | Song Cycle |
442 Prefab Sprout | Jordan: The Comeback |
451 Tallest Man on Earth | Shallow Grave |
454 Patti Smith Group | Easter |
468 Pains of Being Pure at Heart | Pains of Being Pure at Heart |
469 Kurt Vile | Smoke Ring For My Halo |
473 Animal Collective | Feels |
480 White Noise | An Electric Storm |
482 Gene Clark | No Other |
494 Camera Obscura | Let's Get Out Of This Country |
Thoughts? Alternative suggestions?

I would be SHOCKED (and very saddened) if Moby's Play didn't make it in.

Albums polls are so painful!!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
It would surprise me, too, but I looked and looked at the list of what's left and it seemed like a potentially logical choice. Here are some others, though, that I'm not 100% sure about:Zorg wrote:I would be SHOCKED (and very saddened) if Moby's Play didn't make it in.
But knowing you Harold, you're probably right.
300 Paul McCartney | Band on the Run
330 Belle and Sebastian | Tigermilk
332 Gorillaz | Demon Days
350 Original Soundtrack | The Harder They Come
403 Eminem | The Marshall Mathers LP
444 Aretha Franklin | Lady Soul
But it's very, very difficult to see any of these failing to make the top 1000.
There's one other album from 2011's 400-500 range that hasn't appeared yet, but it's hard to imagine Burial's Untrue not making it into the top 240.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Personally, I'm stunned that Elvis Costello's Armed Forces and Get Happy!! both fell short of the top 1000. I'm also sad that the New York Dolls' debut didn't make the top 500 this time. But I'm thrilled that the two Game Theory albums made it into the top 1000.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
So, as it turns out, there's an extra spot available. Here's what I've been doing: I made a copy of the 2011 top 500 to serve as a checklist, and as each new group of poll entries (along with the 501-1000 lists) is revealed I've been deleting them. But Doc accidentally left out the 2011 rank for I Am a Bird Now on the Results thread, which means that I didn't delete it from the checklist. Which means that there are actually 260 albums (not 261) from the 2011 top 500 yet to be accounted for. Which means 24 "odd albums out," not 25. Which means - I'm reasonably certain - that Moby is back in the game. (I still can't see Scott 3 landing in this top 240.)Harold wrote:It would surprise me, too, but I looked and looked at the list of what's left and it seemed like a potentially logical choice.Zorg wrote:I would be SHOCKED (and very saddened) if Moby's Play didn't make it in.

Ah, I see in my absence there's been a new poll. Excited to see the Top 100 of so in case I've missed anything lately. Too bad I came too late to participate, who's going to prop up In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in my absence?
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Bumping this thread, as we get closer to the top 100.
At this writing, Doc Brown has posted #'s 131-500, and let's face it - the only surprises left involve the rankings. There are now exactly 129 albums left unaccounted for from the top 220 of our 2011 poll (the lowest-ranked of these is Off the Wall, #219). They will fill 129 of the remaining 130 slots, and it's pretty obvious what the remaining album will be - the first word of its title rhymes with "flannel" and the second rhymes with nothing.
And I'm not complaining. This is a great poll, maybe the best album poll I've ever seen, anywhere, and Doc's presentation is wonderful.
For completeness and correction's sake, here is the list of albums that made the 2011 top 500 that are nowhere to be found in the corrected 2014 top 1000 (with apologies again to Moby and Tracy Chapman, whose chances I'd previously doubted):
263 Scott Walker | Scott 3 |
294 Go-Betweens | 16 Lovers Lane |
299 Beach Boys | Sunflower |
330 Belle and Sebastian | Tigermilk
390 Herbie Hancock | Maiden Voyage |

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
It looks like it's down to "The Suburbs" and "Channel Orange" for the battle of "which 2010's album can finish second to MBDTF?"

Ah, I wish I still had a rabbit or two to pull out of my hat, but Harold is (as usual) correct. Once again, Harold, thank you for contributing your textbook knowledge of the AM lists to this year's poll. I feel like you should be credited as my co-author.Harold wrote:At this writing, Doc Brown has posted #'s 131-500, and let's face it - the only surprises left involve the rankings.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I'm shocked Tigermilk will be omitted from this year's poll, considering how highly If You're Feeling Sinister ranked. That's my only qualm with an otherwise fantastic list.
On the bright side for me, it appears that 11 of my top 20 album have yet to appear on the list (not including Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns, which I doubt will find itself in our top 150).

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
I'm doing just fine.
Only two albums missed out on the Top 500. And they were from Rush and Dream Theater, who aren't exactly forum darlings.
Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Here's what the 2010's albums that have appeared in the top 500 look like, ordered from top to bottom, with the names of the top 3 known, yet their positions currently TBA.
This should give us a good insight into what a hypothetical "top albums of the half decade" AM poll would look like...
28. Contra- 497
27. Treats- 478
26. Strange Mercy- 477
25. El Camino- 459
24. Trouble Will Find Me- 450

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Amending this slightly from before, to reflect where the list now stands as well as the fact that I missed that there was one yet-to-appear album ranked lower in 2011 than Off the Wall. Doesn't affect my predictions in the slightest - I just forgot where Post was ranked in 2011.Harold wrote:There are now exactly 80 albums left unaccounted for from the top 250 of our 2011 poll (the lowest-ranked of these is Post, #233). They will fill the remaining 80 slots.
Biggest winners in this poll, based on what's left: Bjork and Bruce Springsteen. The Icelandic wonder didn't place a single album in our top 100 last time around; now she's going to have three. As for Springsteen, two albums that missed the top 100 in 2011 are going to be in our top 80 for 2014 (in addition to the ever-popular Born to Run). Turning 65 like a Boss!
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
And then - as of this writing, anyway - there were 50.
One artist will have five albums in the top 50. Two will have four. One will have three. Two will have two. The rest will have one.
Can't wait to see where they all end up!

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Beatles, Stones and Dylan appear to account for the most in the top 50. My guess is that Radiohead will have at least two in the top 50. I expect that the Velvet Underground will have an album in the top 2-3 places as will Radiohead. I wonder which other performer will place an album in top 3. Perhaps the Beatles or Beach Boys.
Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Harold can probably verify, but it appears that two albums that were in the high 60s (66 and 68 I believe) three years ago are still around: Rain Dogs and Rumours.
Of the two, the Fleetwood Mac album is the more surprising addition to the top 45, while I'm surprised the Waits album finished that low last time.

Re: 2014 All Time Albums Poll NOT the Results!
Correct, both albums have yet to appear. I'm kind of surprised to see Dummy finishing this high, too, although it just missed the top 50 in 2011 so maybe I shouldn't be.Listyguy wrote:Harold can probably verify, but it appears that two albums that were in the high 60s (66 and 68 I believe) three years ago are still around: Rain Dogs and Rumours.

Love this poll!
All the picks are good.
No qualms with MBDTF at #69. That's six lower than I gave it.
As soon as I work out the bugs with Moonbeam's program, I can formulate a less "arbitrary" list.
But this one is pretty good.
