Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9
Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9
The first round is now halfway through. And to kick off the second half, this week is even more post-2000 heavy than the tournament as a whole, with two brackets being exclusively form the current era of music.
So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.
44. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
85. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (1979)
172. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (1964)

Comfortably Numb
Under the Boardwalk
There There
Black Skinhead
No song here was bad. Kanye just had a bad draw. He would have won the third group handily.
American Idiot
Little Fluffy Clouds
Round and Round
Can't Help Falling in Love
I hadn't Heard "Little Fluffy Clouds" before. This was an interesting spoken word piece. "American Idiot" still wins the day, however.
Sea Within a Sea
IZZO (HOVA)
Ready For the Floor
Thinkin Bout You
Same as before, I discover a pleasant surprise. Only this time, it wins.
Solsbury Hill
The Passenger
Monster
Got Your Money
Easy. Nothing Touches Pete, even on a bad day.

Comfortably Numb
Black Skinhead
There There
Under The Boardwalk
Wow, this is a great bracket. I give Pink Floyd a slight edge to Kanye because I've known the song longer, but both are damn good. The Radiohead track is also great, and Under the Boardwalk is a quintessential SH2B4.
American Idiot
Can't Help Falling In Love
Little Fluffy Clouds
Round and Round
This isn't a good bracket. "American Idiot" is the best song here, but I get the feeling the forum as a whole is too anti-Green Day to make this easy.
Thinkin Bout You
IZZO
Ready For the Floor
Sea Within a Sea
Keeping these guys in the order they came. Nothing is really spectacular here, but the Ocean song is (in my opinion) his best.
Monster
Solsbury Hill
The Passenger
Got Your Money
Top three here are amazing, oh man. "Monster" still wins somewhat easily, but damn.

I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

1. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (1979)
2. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
3. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (1964)
4. Radiohead - There There (2003)
Wall-era Floyd is generally horrible, but even I must admit that Comfortably Numb is an exception. The other 3 are all good, though "There There" has lost a bit of its lustre for me.
1. Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love (1961)
2. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (1990)
3. Ariel Pink - Round and Round (2010)
4. Green Day - American Idiot (2004)
Nothing outstanding in this bunch, Elvis just nips out The Orb. Neither "Round and Round" nor "American Idiot" ever struck me as all that great.
1. Jay-Z - IZZO (H.O.V.A.) (2001)
2. Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You (2012)
3. The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea (2009)
4. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (2008)
I love "IZZO", it's like eating candy. The other 3 are all pretty good, though "Ready for the Floor" never struck me in the same way as, say, "Boy from School".
1. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (1977)
2. Kanye West - Monster (2010)
3. Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (1999)
4. Iggy Pop - The Passenger (1977)
Strong top 2 here, with my sentimentality for "Solsbury Hill" winning out. I never really liked the 1977 Iggy albums all that much, which I know is a bit of heresy but I gotta be honest with myself.
2. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
3. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (1964)
4. Radiohead - There There (2003)

4. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
I never thought I'd be putting Radiohead higher than 4th, but this one was actually pretty good. "Comfortably Numb" is one of my dad's favorites and I'd don't think he'd be happy seeing my put it last here, but 90% of Floyd's stuff is just kinda boring to me.

1. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (1979)
2. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
3. Radiohead - There There (2003)
4. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (1964)
Kanye’s “fuck-up-your-whole-afternoon shit” is brilliant, and exemplifies everything great about Yeezus, but “Comfortably Numb” is an all-time favorite of mine (particularly Gilmour’s epic closing solo) and takes the bracket easily. Everything’s good here, but the Floyd reigns supreme.
1. Green Day - American Idiot (2004)
2. Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love (1961)
3. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (1990)
4. Ariel Pink - Round and Round (2010)
Not my favorite bracket, and hence not a lot to say. Green Day edges out the King (although there are a number of American Idiot tracks I like a lot more), but it’s pretty much a toss-up.
1. Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You (2012)
2. Jay-Z - IZZO (H.O.V.A.) (2001)
3. The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea (2009)
4. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (2008)
A terrific group, with every selection worthy of being considered a new classic of sorts. Even so, Frank and Hova outdistance the competition by a wide margin. “IZZO” may be Jay’s definitive single (and does Kanye own this entire week, or what?), but I like “Thinkin Bout You” more.
1. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (1977)
2. Iggy Pop - The Passenger (1977)
3. Kanye West - Monster (2010)
4. Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (1999)
Another sharply demarcated grouping, even more so by virtue of the top two coming from the same year. If everyone was up to Nicki Minaj’s instantly-legendary standard on “Monster,” it would be an easy #1, but for me Gabriel and Iggy are the class of this field, with Gabriel’s wonderful statement of purpose coming out on top.
2. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
3. Radiohead - There There (2003)

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9
I've never understood why Minaj's verse is so loved. Yes, it's good, relative to Nicki Minaj (which isn't saying a lot). I've always preferred Jay-Z's verse.Harold wrote: If everyone was up to Nicki Minaj’s instantly-legendary standard on “Monster,” it would be an easy #1, but for me Gabriel and Iggy are the class of this field, with Gabriel’s wonderful statement of purpose coming out on top.

1. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (1979)
5. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
8. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (1964)
10. Radiohead - There There (2003)
Pink Floyd should be hard to beat here and it still wins, but Black Skinhead is another proof that I should give Yeezus another chance. All four of these are strong however.
2. Green Day - American Idiot (2004)
6. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (1990)
7. Ariel Pink - Round and Round (2010)
9. Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love (1961)
And these four are equally strong. American Idiot has been a favorite of mine for some time, even though the album has even better songs. Little Fluffy Clouds was a great discovery, however, and Ariel Pink delivers indie at it's finest, while Elvis stays at the right side of sentimentality.
12. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (2008)
13. The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea (2009)
14. Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You (2012)
15. Jay-Z - IZZO (H.O.V.A.) (2001)
Who goes to the wrong side of sentimentality is Frank Ocean. Well, the song isn't that sentimental in itself, but I just don't care for the over-emotive singing style that Ocean uses here. It's still better then yet another self-aggrandizing rap song in which Jay-Z get's a group of female singers to sing a chorus in gibberish to compare him to God. I'm tired of those things. Sea Within a Sea starts a little murky, but gets pretty good later on. However, the only fully successful song here is by Hot Chip and I wouldn't even call that amazing. It's a solid, catchy dance song, no more, no less. All the other three brackets are filled to the brim with amazing stuff, so this one disappoints deeply.
3. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (1977)
4. Kanye West - Monster (2010)
11. Iggy Pop - The Passenger (1977)
16. Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (1999)
This bracket would be on par with bracket 1 and 2 if it didn't contain the worst song of the week. If Good Your Money was swapped with Ready for the Floor it could have competed, though it would have made bracket 3 very miserable for me. Peter Gabriel leads the pack with a song I used to think of as annoying, but has won me over through the years. Kanye West delivers perhaps his finest song (and yes, Minaj's finest hour) with Monster, while Iggy Pop's The Passenger is a little too long, but still really great.

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9
The voter turnout so far this week has been pathetically low! We haven't cracked 20 yet! Get those votes in!
Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9
No huge favorite of mine, but IZZO is the only song I don't really like so quite a good overall.
1. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (1979)
2. Radiohead - There There (2003)
8. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (2013)
10. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (1964)
Very nice bracket, I think There There being the 8th highest ranked Radiohead song is well deserved, I'd rank it about the same (though with not exactly the same songs ahead of it)
6. Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love (1961)
9. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (1990)
11. Ariel Pink - Round and Round (2010)
12. Green Day - American Idiot (2004)
Almost a 3 way tie behind Elvis, but The Orb has been a much bigger game changer than the other 2 so kuddo to them.
I don't get the acclaim for Ariel Pink, but this song at least I can appreciate (but top 10 of the decade so far Pitchfork ? No way)
4. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (2008)
14. Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You (2012)
15. The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea (2009)
16. Jay-Z - IZZO (H.O.V.A.) (2001)
Like for Fugazi, I gave up on seeing love for Hot Chip in this forum, but Ready for the Floor should easily win the weakest bracket of the week.
3. Kanye West - Monster (2010)
5. Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (1999)
7. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (1977)
13. Iggy Pop - The Passenger (1977)
ODB out of Enter the Wu Tang has done much more misses and hits as far as I am concerned, but both of his solo albums got a killer track and Got Your Money is the one in Nigga Please. Plus it's the first major Neptunes produced song and the first Kelis appearance. Edge Kanye though, with one of the 2 great Nicki Minaj verses (see the first verse of Super Bass for the other one) but also a pretty cool non sense Kanye verse (Rick Ross could have stayed home though...)

I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9
Here are the weekly results:
85. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (83, 15)
213. Radiohead - There There (62, 6)
44. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (62, 4)
172. The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk (53, 1)
This one was a runaway from the start. Pink Floyd ended with more than half of the first place votes, and they weren’t exactly facing bad songs either. Next round they take a crack at “Chicago” and “Everlong”.
235. Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love (74, 12)
107. Green Day - American Idiot (65, 10)
22. Ariel Pink - Round and Round (56, 1)
150. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (55, 2)
This one was a two horse race which really showed the polarizing nature of Green Day on the forum. The song received 10 first place votes and 8 last place votes, which allowed Elvis to cruise to victory. I believe “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is the oldest song to advance thus far, and gets to face “Heartbeats” and a pair of unknowns the next time we see it.
62. Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You (81, 12)
190. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (62, 4)
67. Jay-Z - IZZO (H.O.V.A.) (57, 4)
195. The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea (50, 5)
In another dominating performance, Frank Ocean gets a second song into the round of 64 by a margin of nearly 20 points. Next round it will face “Black Dog” and two TBAs.
73. Kanye West - Monster (75, 8)
201. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (72, 9)
56. Iggy Pop - The Passenger (70, 8)
184. Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (43, 1)
In what was the only close match of the week, Peter Gabriel coughs up a decent sized lead to Kanye. “Solsubry Hill” had the lead for basically the whole week, but tied and lost the lead on the last two votes. “Got You Money” also narrowly avoided not getting any first places, but was saved by a last minute vote from Poliuks. Next round “Monster” will face “Idioteque”.
85. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (83, 15)
213. Radiohead - There There (62, 6)
44. Kanye West - Black Skinhead (62, 4)
