Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 9

The first round is now halfway through. And to kick off the second half, this week is even more post-2000 heavy than the tournament as a whole, with two brackets being exclusively form the current era of music.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

Wow, this is a great bracket. I give Pink Floyd a slight edge to Kanye because I've known the song longer, but both are damn good. The Radiohead track is also great, and Under the Boardwalk is a quintessential SH2B4.

Wall-era Floyd is generally horrible, but even I must admit that Comfortably Numb is an exception. The other 3 are all good, though "There There" has lost a bit of its lustre for me.

Kanye’s “fuck-up-your-whole-afternoon shit” is brilliant, and exemplifies everything great about Yeezus, but “Comfortably Numb” is an all-time favorite of mine (particularly Gilmour’s epic closing solo) and takes the bracket easily. Everything’s good here, but the Floyd reigns supreme.

I've never understood why Minaj's verse is so loved. Yes, it's good, relative to Nicki Minaj (which isn't saying a lot). I've always preferred Jay-Z's verse.

Pink Floyd should be hard to beat here and it still wins, but Black Skinhead is another proof that I should give Yeezus another chance. All four of these are strong however.

And these four are equally strong. American Idiot has been a favorite of mine for some time, even though the album has even better songs. Little Fluffy Clouds was a great discovery, however, and Ariel Pink delivers indie at it's finest, while Elvis stays at the right side of sentimentality.

Who goes to the wrong side of sentimentality is Frank Ocean. Well, the song isn't that sentimental in itself, but I just don't care for the over-emotive singing style that Ocean uses here. It's still better then yet another self-aggrandizing rap song in which Jay-Z get's a group of female singers to sing a chorus in gibberish to compare him to God. I'm tired of those things. Sea Within a Sea starts a little murky, but gets pretty good later on. However, the only fully successful song here is by Hot Chip and I wouldn't even call that amazing. It's a solid, catchy dance song, no more, no less. All the other three brackets are filled to the brim with amazing stuff, so this one disappoints deeply.

This bracket would be on par with bracket 1 and 2 if it didn't contain the worst song of the week. If Good Your Money was swapped with Ready for the Floor it could have competed, though it would have made bracket 3 very miserable for me. Peter Gabriel leads the pack with a song I used to think of as annoying, but has won me over through the years. Kanye West delivers perhaps his finest song (and yes, Minaj's finest hour) with Monster, while Iggy Pop's The Passenger is a little too long, but still really great.

ODB out of Enter the Wu Tang has done much more misses and hits as far as I am concerned, but both of his solo albums got a killer track and Got Your Money is the one in Nigga Please. Plus it's the first major Neptunes produced song and the first Kelis appearance. Edge Kanye though, with one of the 2 great Nicki Minaj verses (see the first verse of Super Bass for the other one) but also a pretty cool non sense Kanye verse (Rick Ross could have stayed home though...)

This one was a runaway from the start. Pink Floyd ended with more than half of the first place votes, and they weren’t exactly facing bad songs either. Next round they take a crack at “Chicago” and “Everlong”.

This one was a two horse race which really showed the polarizing nature of Green Day on the forum. The song received 10 first place votes and 8 last place votes, which allowed Elvis to cruise to victory. I believe “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is the oldest song to advance thus far, and gets to face “Heartbeats” and a pair of unknowns the next time we see it.

In what was the only close match of the week, Peter Gabriel coughs up a decent sized lead to Kanye. “Solsubry Hill” had the lead for basically the whole week, but tied and lost the lead on the last two votes. “Got You Money” also narrowly avoided not getting any first places, but was saved by a last minute vote from Poliuks. Next round “Monster” will face “Idioteque”.
