JOHN LENNON
Hymie's Basement-21st Century Pop Song
Max Berlin-Elle et Moi
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper-Bird Balloons
The Clean-Tally Ho!

This is one of the best matchups of the tourney. I went with Hymie because they do sound like a 21st century pop song. It has all the elements to qualify. I don't know if it's satire, but it's interesting.

I was almost inclined to give the edge to Max Berlin, but let's be honest, the song is a bit repetitive.

Lady Lamb was an interesting discovery. She could've advanced, but her song lost steam at about the 2:30 mark.

PRINCE
Weeping Willows-Blue and Alone
Owen Pallett-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
Metallica-Am I Evil?
Astor Piazzola & Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur

Alright songs. I totally was not prepared for Weeping Willow's experience. Sure the singer sounds like a distressed sealion and the lyrics are not the best, but the music complinents a fancy ball and it gave me the best experience of the day. Points for audacity.

Owen Pallett's song is probably "better", but it didn't give me as much of an experience.

On the two bracket, the first two songs are all excellent for me with interchangable position.
Piazzola is so poweful than I have to put him in the first place but Owen Pallet is a great discovery. Idem for The Clean and Max Berlin (maybe a little bit too long for this one.. it's why it's in the second place).

I liked the 4 songs. I can't believe Tally Ho! is not in AM3000 though, that's the most anthemic kiwi song ever.and pretty much the birth of the Dunedin Sound which might not be the most important sub genre ever but one of the most endearing ones.
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper's Ripely Pine was my favorite discovery of last year's moderately albums poll but I don't think there really is a standout track in there, and if there is it's not this one.

Of course I vote on the week my pick needs support ! I'm not a big fan of the competition, Am I Evil is rawer but not a big improvement compared with the Diamond Head's original song. Still interesting in that it sounds like a link between Kill'em All and Ride the Lightning

Nassim, this Owen Pallett song is incredible. I listen your pick since the beginning of the afternoon and each time, I found something new and exciting in this song. Thanks to sharing this... and if you have another recommendation by this guy, I would be happy.

PRINCE
Weeping Willows-Blue and Alone
Astor Piazzola & Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur
Owen Pallett-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
Metallica-Am I Evil?

Very strong group!

Of course my nominations are not better than yours. But after the success of my other nomination (Tammi Terrell's "All I Do Is Think About You") I expected no less for Weeping Willows "Blue and Alone", which to my ears is equally amazing. It now seems that the only thing that helps it from becoming 4th is a too-aggressive-for-this-forum Metallica song...

John Lennon later.

I listened through the rest of the "Has a Good Home" and it's really beautiful. I think I will spend a lot of time with Mr. Pallett onwards.

I'm bumping because of the lack of votes. Only eight with four days to go is disappointing.

and I'm curious about Henrik's picks for the Lennon Group.

Another recommendation for "Ripely Pine", my favourite track is "The Nothing Part II". "Bird Balloons" just pips the excellent "Elle et Moi".

Two excellent Owen Pallett songs in the AMF chart this year and now this. Time to check out his albums.

6. Hymie's Basement - 21st Century Pop Song (2003)
7. Max Berlin - Elle et moi (1978)

Prince group:
2. Weeping Willows - Blue and Alone (1997)

4. Owen Pallett - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead (2005)
5. Ástor Piazzola & Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur (1988)

If you look at my week rankings you notice that there is almost a rift between the two brackets and there is. In fact, the gap is big. I have written about Bird Balloons extensively on two occasions before and I won't bore you again, but as my nomination it's an easy number one of both the group and the week. But where my nomination last week was caught in an unusually strong bracket, Bird Balloons is caught in one that doesn't do much for me. Sad, because the other group is one of the best brackets up till now. Weeping Willows, Metallica and Final Fantasy could pretty much all have won here.

1. Max Berlin-Elle et Moi - love the funky French, I had never heard this before.
2. The Clean-Tally Ho! - already knew this and liked it very much
3. Lady Lamb the Beekeeper-Bird Balloons - striking, but in the end a bit overwrought.
4. Hymie's Basement-21st Century Pop Song - not my favorite stuff, reminds me of Doseone who gets on my nerves.

PRINCE GROUP
1. Owen Pallett-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead - very nice, odd how I like him so much more than Arcade Fire
2. Astor Piazzola & Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur - more good Piazzola
3. Metallica-Am I Evil? - I remember this one from back in the day, it wears out its welcome a bit
4. Weeping Willows-Blue and Alone - seemed like it would be great and then fizzled

“Bird Balloons” was one of my top 30 songs of 2013, and it still comes in 4th overall behind Berlin, Pallett, and Piazzolla. Yet another remarkably strong week of nominations!

Max Berlin - Elle et Moi: 8
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper - Bird Balloons: 7.5
The Clean - Tally Ho!: 7
Hymie's Basement - 21st Century Pop Song: 6

Very nice bracket! The hint of italo disco in "Elle et Moi" is really, really, really nice, and gives a slight edge over the dramatic and intense "Bird Balloons", which threatens to steer into genres I don't generally care for, or perhaps supersedes its genre to my ears? In any case, I quite liked both. "Tally Ho!" was lots of fun, too, but the voice dragged it down somewhat. "21st Century Pop Song" was quite interesting, but I enjoyed the others more.

Owen Pallett - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead: 9
Metallica - Am I Evil?: 7
Weeping Willows - Blue and Alone: 7
Astor Piazzola & Roberto Goyeneche - Vuelvo al sur: 7

Wow. The Owen Pallett song is fantastically gorgeous, and makes for my favorite discovery of the game so far! The other three songs are all quite good. I'm a little surprised that Kill 'Em All isn't acclaimed - I much prefer it to Master of Puppets, for what its worth, and there are some genuinely beautiful guitar runs in "Am I Evil?", which is enough to just give it an edge over the other two songs.

Fantastic week!

Poll Closed!

JOHN LENNON
Max Berlin-Elle et Moi (55, 4)
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper-Bird Balloons (46, 6)
---
The Clean-Tally Ho! (41, 5)
Hymie's Basement-21st Century Pop Song (38, 2)

This was a group that started topsy-turvy, but ended up somewhat less so. "Elle et Moi" led most of the way despite not receiving any first-place votes until Friday, when it got four in a row!

Lady Lamb marks only the second time in the tournament where a song with the most first-place votes fails to win the group.

The Clean were actually mostly in it until earlier today.

PRINCE GROUP
Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy)-The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead (63, 9)
Astor Piazzola and Robert Goyeneche-Vuelvo al Sur (46, 4)
---
Weeping Willows-Blue and Alone (40, 3)
Metallica-Am I Evil? (33, 2)

No contest! Owen Pallett got most of the first-place votes and dominated the entire week. The song definitely asserted itself as a favorite with this astonishing performance.

Second place was a bit up in the air, but "Vuelvo al Sur" had just enough in the tank to pull off a spot in the Round of 32.

And now comes the final group round! Stay tuned! The final piece of the puzzle now falls into place.
