Unacclaimed 2.0 Group Stage: Week 6

Post by whuntva »

Here's Week 6!

You know the drill. Songs selected at random. Rank 1-4, four points up top, one at the bottom. Top Two advance; ties broken by #1 votes.

Poll Ends Sunday, 21 September at 11:59 UTC.

I think I can still hit that deadline even with College.

BOWIE
Nits-In the Dutch Mountains
Enrique Morente & Lagartija Nick - Omega
Van Morrison-Wonderful Remark
REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

Solid Group all around.

NIts reminded me of "Kashmir". The riff is otherworldly and makes you pump your fist in the air!

"Omega" came close, but couldn't quite give the same experience.

BROWN

Gotye-Heart's a Mess
Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli-Minor Swing
Gorillaz, Andre 3000, and James Murphy-DoYaThing
Jean-Jacques Perrey-E.V.A

BIAS ALERT: Gotye was at a huge advantage going in. This song is already in my Top 100, so I saved it for last. It held up extremely well, but unfortunately I think my prejudice towards this song after first hearing it five years ago has not waned. Point goes to Gotye.

I'll be humming "Minor Swing" for a few weeks, now.

I actually knew "DoYaThing" was part of a Converse promo, but didn't know there was a long version. I prefer the song Mark Foster, A-Trak, and Kimbra did, but this song was okay, too.

"EVA", a song I thoroughly expected to hate upon the first note, did get progressively better as it went on.

The one-of-a-kind “Omega” is my favorite of the tournament so far, and the top two songs in each bracket are absolutely outstanding. In fact, Gorillaz had the only song of the week that didn’t strike a personal chord with me (which struck me as odd, since I love almost everything else they’ve done).

This game seems to be getting better every week. 7 of the 8 selections here are a hit with me.

David Bowie group
1. The Nits - In The Dutch Mountains
2. Enrique Morente & Lagartija Nick - Omega
6. Van Morrison - Wonderful Remark
7. R.E.M. - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

I already wrote about In the Dutch Mountains when I selected it. It should be an easy victor in my list, but Omega made it difficult, because damn, it's amazing. Truly deserving of the term "epic" in every way. Van Morrison and R.E.M. don't win out simply because they don't do anything unexpected of them, but they do it very, very well indeed.

James Brown group
3. Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli - Minor Swing
4. Jean-Jacques Perrey - E.V.A.
5. Gotye - Hearts a Mess
8. Gorillaz featuring Andre 3000 & James Murphy - DoYaThing

The first three here could have been ranked in every way, but the two instrumentals take the cake today. I love how Minor Swing seems to rock a bit, it's time far ahead.
Now The Gorillaz is another thing. I listened to it three times for this game (as I do all songs). The first time it seemed great. An ambitious song, that might be too long, but still amazing. However it lost power with each subsequent listen and I can't picture myself wanting to listen to it again. The repetition becomes more unbearable each time and frankly, the song does very little with it's running time. There's only so many times that "I'm the shit" seems funny. It's like a joke that's good at first, but then the joker starts repeating it without end.

59) Enrique Morente & Lagartija Nick - Omega
49) R.E.M. - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)
62) Van Morrison-Wonderful Remark

The two first songs are good discovering.

JAMES BROWN GROUP
46) Jean-Jacques Perrey - E.V.A.
15) Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli - Minor Swing
58) Gorillaz, Andre 3000, and James Murphy-DoyaThing
28) Gotye-Heart's a Mess

Minor Swing not in the top AM list is ununderstandable (if this word exist in english).I change my vote for giving a chance to E.V.A.

The Ziggy Zeitgeist
51) The Nits - In the Dutch Mountains
59) Enrique Morente & Lagartija Nick - Omega
49) R.E.M. - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)
62) Van Morrison - Wonderful Remark
Why do us folks west of the Atlantic always miss out on the good stuff?
In summary, "In the Dutch Mountains" made a fantastic first impression starting with the initial seconds of the song, and this impression only improved the more I listened; "Omega" had a few moments of greatness afloat in a sea of experimentation, a sea that also got more inviting on subsequent listens; And finally, when it comes down to it, a rather good R.E.M. song easily trumps a rather good Van Morrison tune.

James' Jams
58) Gorillaz, Andre 3000, and James Murphy - DoyaThing
28) Gotye - Heart's a Mess
15) Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli - Minor Swing
46) Jean-Jacques Perrey - E.V.A.
And just when I thought the previous collection of songs would be a tough act to beat, along comes the single best bracket of the competition thus far... The less I extol the virtues of "DoYaThing" the better, but suffice it to say that we mere mortals are not fit to even consider taking a slice of pie from Andre... Hell, he has a divine right to every pie the human race could possibly offer him. The song is pretty goddamn good, in short. It is really a shame that "Heart's a Mess" had to appear in the vicinity of this monster, as this song would have conquered almost every bracket up to this point (Satie and maybe the Pointer Sisters might give Gotye a run for his money) without breaking a sweat... Randomizers can be cruel sometimes. While "Minor Swing" and "E.V.A." have comparatively little on these titans of song, the former is still probably in my top 15 songs of this game so far, while the latter holds down 4th place with style.

Now I feel incredibly guilty about procrastinating on last week's round, if it was even half as good as this week's :angry-banghead:

Poll is (not quite) closed!

THIS TIME, I REALLY WANT YOU TO RECOUNT!! PARTS WERE WAY TOO CLOSE TO CALL!! I RECOUNTED TWICE AND I'M STILL NOT ENTIRELY SURE!!

DAVID BOWIE GROUP
REM-Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) (57, 7)
Nits-In the Dutch Mountains (54, 6)
---
Van Morrison-Wonderful Remark (43, 5)
Enrique Morente & Lagartija Nick - Omega (43, 2)

The question is not who advances, but how. First count had REM winning via tiebreaker with the score at 52 all. But a recount had REM win by three.

JAMES BROWN GROUP
Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli-Minor Swing (61, 10)
Jean-Jacques Perrey-EVA (49, 2)
---
Gotye-Heart's a Mess (48, 5)
Gorillaz, Andre 3000, and James Murphy-DoYaThing (43, 3)

There was no question who'd win this one. "Swing" was the first song in a while to have 10+ top votes.

The question is with second place. When I kept my first tally,It seemed Gotye would win via tiebreak, but on recount, it looks like JJP leads by a point.

So, what's the count?

Again, HELP ME OUT HERE!!

Based on my math, the results of the second bracket look solid (which means Gotye gets left behind :( ), and the first bracket looks like 56 points for R.E.M. and 55 points for the Nits, but I'll go through it a few more times just to be sure

Edit: I didn't confirm less essential results (ie 3rd and 4th place for Bracket #1 and 1st and 4th for Bracket #2), but my math still seems solid.

Just counted both songs as well with the same result: R.E.M. 56 points, The Nits 55.

Nice to see a Dutch song go through and happy to have my two nominations - Red Pony and Carnival of Sorts - still in competition! :music-rockon:

OK. I guess results will stand.

REM gets Irma Thomas, Nits get Gnarils Barkley.

JJP takes on Tammi Terrell, and Django gets "Calypso WAR", whos name I am now writing correctly (Thanks, Honorio).

Also, here's some completely useless demographics. Data deficient for Tantra, so i guessed:

USA: 33
France: 6
UK: 5
Australia: 4
Canada: 3
New Zealand: 3
Italy: 2
Japan: 2
Sweden: 2
Argentina: 1
Brazil: 1
Netherlands: 1
Poland: 1
Spain: 1
Trinidad and Tobago: 1

"DoYaThing" had one credit from the UK, but two from the US (Andre and James Murphy)

If I had voted in time Gotye would have made it. :(

Actually I was a Gotye/"Hearts a Mess" fan long before "Somebody That I Used to Know". And I loved "Somebody That I Used to Know" before it became a worldwide hit. I tried to get everyone to like it, but when everyone liked it I hated it. So much that I didn't even bother to vote for "Hearts a Mess" here...
