Unacclaimed 2.0 Group Stage: Week 5

Post by whuntva »

Alright. Last week was very slow, with no votes being cast in the last 24 hours. I think it's because summer's over and we all have more to do now.

Nonetheless, the show must go on! Here is the fifth week of songs for your listening pleasure.

The songs were grouped randomly through a web app into groups of four. Voters will rank them top to bottom with four points to the top, one to the bottom. At the end of the week, the TWO with the most votes advance. Ties are broken by the amount of first-place votes.

Comments encouraged but not required.

Poll Ends Sunday, 14 Septemberr at 11:59 UTC (7:59 pm EDT)

MICHAEL JACKSON GROUP
4) Frank Zappa-Watermelon in Easter Hay

MICHAEL JACKSON
Irma Thomas-Ruler of my Heart
Frank Zappa-Watermelon in Easter Hay
Gnarls Barkley-Who's gonna Save my Soul?
Chris Knox - Not Given Lightly

"Ruler of my Heart" is a song I liekd more than I expected. Her energy and good voice carry the group for me and make the entire week.

Despite being one of the best guitar tracks I've ever heard, Zappa comes in a close second only because I think I got more out of Irma.

Chris Knox loses for being too generic sounding.

JACK WHITE
Santa Esmeralda-Don't Let me be Misunderstood
Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and the Duke of Iron-Calypso Warrior
Jun Togawa - 諦念プシガンガ [Teinen Pushiganga]
Tammi Terrell-All I do is Think about You

Santa Esmeralda wins in a landslide. A Latin version of an already classic '60s jam always had the advantage.

Second place was tighter. "Calypso Warrior" gets a slight edge for its dance beat and interesting posse cut style, but it really could have gone either way. The Duke of Iron is an awesome stage name, by the way.

Tammi Terrell wasn't bad, but I consider Stevie Wonder's version to be the definitive cover of this song.

Yes, Tammi Terrell recorded this song in 1966, but for mysterious reasons Motown didn't release it. I think it was basically unknown until it appeared on the album "A Cellarful of Motown!" in 2002. The song was written by Stevie Wonder, who recorded the song himself in 1980, on the "Hotter Than July" album.
I prefer Tammi's recording, both the arrangement and her amazing vocals, but massive props to Stevie for writing this wonderful song when he was only 16 years old!

What did you do when you were 16? :o :D

Here you can hear both versions after each other: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flXHX0I1dL8

Why does this say it ends at 3:43? Everything after is in every version I heard of this and apparently, the original release was even longer (16 minutes). So what is the information that the song ends at 3:43 based on. I specifically ask this, because it is what happens after that mark that really makes this cover version special.

Gnarls Barkley's song is one of my favorite of the 2000's (what a voice), a magnificient Gorillazesque song. Irma Thomas is a great discovery and the two others are good too, a strong group.

JACK WHITE GROUP
33) Tammi Terrell-All I do is Think about You

Interesting group, four different music style and four good songs too, but give me anything to the 50's and 60's, motownesque music and it will be first.

The video said it was a medley. I din't know where one track ended. But if you say so.

It says something about the strength of the week that all four songs in the Jack White group would’ve won the MJ bracket—and I like every song in the MJ bracket.

It’s too bad Motown didn’t release the Tammi Terrell song in 1966. It’s absolutely stunning in every way. I love Stevie Wonder, but after hearing the original, his version just couldn’t compare for me. Stevie might’ve written it, but Tammi’s vocals really capture that wonderful Motown atmosphere.

Sorry whuntva but I'm going to make two clarifications about two of the songs of the week:
1. The correct name of the song by Lord Invader, Duke of Iron and Macbeth the Great is "Calypso War" and not "Calypso Warrior." Quoting Wikipedia: "War is a calypso form that has existed since at least the turn of the twentieth century. Originally it was sung in patois or French creole. The classic War form is an eight-line stanza, the first four lines in a minor key, then modulating into the major, and returning to the minor with the refrain "santimanite" ("sans humanité" in patois, in English "without humanity"). The object of War is to promote the calypsonian and defeat his competitors." The Calypso War can be seen as a precedent of rap battles. And this is not the only common trait with hip hop, also according to Wikipedia "sex, scandal, gossip, innuendo, politics, local news, bravado and insulting other calypsonians were the order of the day in classic calypso, just as it is today with classic hip hop."
2. The 1963 original studio version of Irma Thomas' "Ruler of My Heart" is actually available in YouTube (you can go here to listen to it) but Hymie – the one who nominated it – provided a live version from 1976 stating that "youtube only has live versions." By the way this song was copied by Otis Redding. In Matthew Greenwald words for AllMusicGuide: "Another great example of Southern soul balladry, "Pain in My Heart" was Otis Redding's third consecutive such outing at the beginning of his solo career. Interestingly, although a Redding original, the song resembled an Allen Toussaint composition, "Ruler of My Heart," a bit too strongly. Toussaint successfully sued, and the song was reverted back to his copyright, under the name "Naomi Toussaint" (his mother's maiden name). Nevertheless, it's a great example of Redding's innate songwriting skills. The Rolling Stones did an excellent cover in 1964, their first of many Redding remakes." This is Otis Redding's Pain in My Heart, listen to it and judge yourself.

Wonderful week! Six outstanding tracks and two very good ones.

MICHAEL JACKSON GROUP
1. Frank Zappa-Watermelon in Easter Hay
4. Chris Knox - Not Given Lightly
6. Gnarls Barkley-Who's gonna Save my Soul?
8. Irma Thomas-Ruler of my Heart

The guitar playing on the Zappa track is truly outstanding. Great atmosphere, there. Even the spoken introduction is memorable. I should really listen to more Zappa. The Knox song I apparently already knew, but I'll be damned if I know where from.

JACK WHITE GROUP
2. Jun Togawa - 諦念プシガンガ [Teinen Pushiganga]
3. Santa Esmeralda - Don't Let me be Misunderstood
5. Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and the Duke of Iron-Calypso Warrior
7. Tammi Terrell-All I do is Think about You

I don't have clue what it's about, but try finding a catchier song in this whole game than the one by Togawa. Santa Esmeralda delivers a great epic too.

Gnarls Barkley - Who's Gonna Save My Soul?: 8
Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay: 7.5
Irma Thomas - Ruler of My Heart: 7
Chris Knox - Not Given Lightly: 5

Very nice group overall! "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" has a bit of that haunted mystery that saw "Crazy" take the world by storm, and it gripped me. Frank Zappa's guitar soloing was quite nice, too, but it just misses out. Irma's sass was a nice discovery as well. "Not Given Lightly" isn't for me.

Santa Esmeralda - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood: 7.5
Tammi Terrell - All I Do Is Think About You: 7
Jun Togawa - 諦念プシガンガ [Teinen Pushiganga]: 7
Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and the Duke of Iron - Calypso Warrior: 7

The most interesting group by far! In a way, I wish all could advance so that I could hear them again. The Latin drama of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" takes the win, its cinematic tint well suited to Kill Bill. "All I Do" is one of my favorites on Hotter Than July, and I had not known that it was recorded so much earlier by the lovely Tammi Terrell. I don't like her version quite as much, but it still has those amazing verses. Jun Togawa and "Calypso Warrior" were unlike anything I'd heard before, and I quite enjoyed them both.

Very nice week!

Great week, overall rankings are above. The Jack White group was splendid, as I had not heard either of the top 2 before, and they are both FANTASTIC! I love the new discoveries AM can provide. Actually, I very much liked everything this week, and was shocked that Santa Esmerelda's epic cover fell like it did.

Poll closed!

Tell me if I miscounted. Let's go!

MICHAEL JACKSON GROUP
Gnarls Barkley-Who's Gonna Save my Soul? (54, 7)
Irma Thomas-Ruler of my Heart (48, 5)
---
Frank Zappa-Watermelon in Easter Hay (46, 4)
Chris Knox-Not Given Lightly (33, 2)

Gnarls Barkley took a little while to get started, but took off in the middle of the week. For awhile, it looked like Irma would take third, but a string of votes later today put her into second.

Chris Knox came very close to a shutout, but still got more one-point votes than any song this week.

JACK WHITE GROUP
Tammi Terrell-All I do is Think About You (54, 9)
Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, and the Duke of Iron-Calypso Warrior (44, 3)
---
Santa Esmeralda-Don't let me be Misunderstood (38, 3)
Jun Togawa - 諦念プシガンガ [Teinen Pushiganga] (37, 2)

The song of the week! Tammi took four first place votes in one day and never faltered. The race for second was a little close, but all those great stage names hung on to clinch a spot in the next round.

Next round coming later. Stay tuned and thanks for playing!

Hahaha, it's pretty obvious that I should write shorter comments. I told in my previous post on this same thread that the correct name of the song by Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great and the Duke of Iron was "Calypso War" and not "Calypso Warrior" but I followed this sentence by more than 100 words, so probably nobody bothered to read it. Probably you thought: "oh, no, another Honorio post filled by quotes and mumbo jumbo." I say this because after my post almost everyone (8 other voters including whuntva, the poll host) continued voting for "Calypso Warrior." Only Stephan, Sweepstakes Ron and Brad voted for "War" (but Brad doesn't count because he nominated the song and also included a reminder of the mistake in the nomination thread with similar results as mine). So, given the fact that:
a) the song (deservedly) passed to the second round and
b) I'm writing too much again
I’m going to end this post using bold, red colour and bigger letters to grab your attention (only joking of course, no offence intended). So…

The name of the song by Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great and the Duke of Iron is "Calypso War"
