Unacclaimed 2.0 Group Stage: Week 4

Post by whuntva »

We are at the halfway point for the Group Stage! we now have TWELVE of the chosen 32 in the knokout stage.

Last week went down to the wire, let's see how this goes!

Remember, the songs were randomized in a web app. The numbers you see are not seeds, they are the input numbers, which were used to sort them.

Rank them favorite to least with four points to the top, one to the bottom. Top TWO each round advance. Maybe the runners-up will get trounced, but there's no way to know without playing.

Comments not required, but enouraged in the spirit of the game!

Poll closes Sunday, 7 September at 11:59 pm UTC!

Let's go!

Bono:

1) Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doin' It to Death
2) Modest Mouse - Baby Blue Sedan
3) Game Theory - Mammoth Gardens
4) Sia - Buttons

Overall, this week for me is the best so far. All of the songs in both groups were good and many are excellent. The JB's are the funkiest band to ever exist and I adore them. Their riffs border on the avant-garde and I could see how Krautrock bands like Can were influenced by James Brown's funk period. Modest Mouse is of course great as always. The other two are enjoyable pop ditties.

Elvis Presely:

1) Edu Lobo - Kyrie
2) American Football - Never Meant
3) The Triffids - Red Pony
4) Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez - La Wally Aria

Edu Lobo's self-titled album is one of my favorites: an unjustly forgotten gem. I have heard Lobo described as a Brazilian Bryan Ferry and I believe Kyrie's schizophrenic song structure mirrors Roxy Music at their best (i.e. the Brian Eno period). I found Fernandez to have a powerful voice, but I though it unfair to rank her among the other songs: classical work like hers works best in the context of the larger piece. There are few pieces of classical music that work in the confines of a few minute snippet. The adagietto in Mahler's Fifth Symphony comes to mind, but not much else.

BONO GROUP
Sia - Buttons
Game Theory - Mammoth Gardens
Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doin' It to Death
Modest Mouse - Baby Blue Sedan

I've always been a fan of Sia, ever since the Zero-7 days. I always loved her energy and creativity, and this is no exception.

Most of the group was just okay. I normally like Modest Mouse, but I didn't like this song that much.

ELVIS PRESLEY GROUP
The Triffids - Red Pony
Edu Lobo - Kyrie
American Football - Never Meant
Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez - La Wally Aria

I'd heard "Red Pony" before. It's my favorite Triffids songs. It likely would have won the group handily against most of the remaining songs.

"Kyrie" is second. It's a solid song and would have won otherwise.

"Diva" is good without being exceptionally great.

BONO GROUP
Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it To Death
Modest Mouse-Baby Blue Sedan
Sia-Buttons
Game Theory-Mammoth Gardens

The ultra-funky “Doin’ It To Death” wins this group easily for me. Though “Baby Blue Sedan” is far from my favorite by Modest Mouse, it's good enough to take 2nd here. I’m not a big fan of Sia (other than “Breathe Me”), but “Buttons” is pleasant enough. Unfortunately, Game Theory was a predecessor to the type of 90s indie rock that remains a personal weakness.

ELVIS PRESLEY GROUP
The Triffids - Red Pony
Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez-La Wally Aria
Edu Lobo-Kyrie
American Football-Never Meant

A very strong group. “Red Pony” is terrific (I especially love the haunting strings). I agree with those who have questioned the inclusion of classical pieces, but they’re here now, and Fernandez’s voice is absolutely gorgeous. Both “Kyrie” and “Never Meant” were nice discoveries.

All the songs in this group are good, but they all miss something to be great to my ears. Game Theory is the only clearly superior one to me.

The first time in the game I feel so completely left out. There's nothing I really liked here, so it is more a ranking of what I disliked less. Last week was definitely superior.

BONO Group:
3. Sia - Buttons
4. Game Theory - Mammoth Gardens
5. Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doin' It to Death
8. Modest Mouse - Baby Blue Sedan

Not a spectacular group, but fun, with two catchy, female-fronted pop songs and a some good, but perhaps to predictable funk. Modest Mouse however, did little for me. It feels like an unfinished song, somehow and I don't like the overly affected sounding vocals.

PRESLEY Group:
1. Edu Lobo - Kyrie
2. The Triffids - Red Pony
6. Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez - La Wally Aria
7. American Football - Never Meant

Fernandez is hard to rate for me, because there is nothing in music I have a harder time getting into than opera singing. Perhaps it's a work of genius, but this style somehow never moves me. I prefer it, however, over Never Meant, which seems unremarkable in every way, a substandard indie song. Luckily, the other two songs do really stand out. The Triffids are beautiful and really fresh, but the inspired, original and massively entertaining Kyrie wins this. I'm surprised to see it do so very little.

Sia - Buttons: 7.5
Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doin' it To Death: 7
Game Theory - Mammoth Gardens: 7
Modest Mouse - Baby Blue Sedan: 4

Surprised that Sia took this one. I think she's pretty good, but there isn't anything I've heard by her that really wows me. This song is one of the best of hers I've heard, and it's enough to take the win here. I have a confession to make - despite loving funk and sometimes feeling it's my favorite genre, I've never really thought James Brown (or Sly Stone for that matter) was all that. "Doin' It to Death" is definitely funky, but it isn't the type of funk that makes MY toes curl. Still, all things being equal, I adhere to the Moonbeam edict that funk >>>> jangle pop, hence it beating out Game Theory. "Mammoth Gardens" is one of the best on Lolita Nation, but as AM favorite, Game Theory have generally come up quite short for me. As for Modest Mouse, I like a number of their songs ("Float On", "Ocean Breathes Salty", "Dashboard"), but this acoustic-heavy folk is really not my bag.

The Triffids - Red Pony: 8
Edu Lobo - Kyrie: 7
Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez - La Wally Aria: 6
American Football - Never Meant: 5

Pretty clear places for all of these songs, except for the top 2. I had never heard any Triffids songs, but I knew they were an uber-buzzworthy group. The "rock, alternative rock, folk rock, country" genre tags put me off exploring them, but "Red Pony" was my favorite song of the week with its stringed beauty. Strangely enough, I hope "Kyrie" wins, because while I have to concede that I preferred "Red Pony", it more obviously ticked the Moonbeam boxes, whereas I've never heard anything like "Kyrie", and I imagine I could really grow to love it if it advances. "La Wally Aria" is solid, but opera (and music genres in general that place far more importance on the voice than other instruments) is not one of my favorite genres. "Never Meant" didn't leave much of an impression.

The nomination of "Doing It to Death" was Bruce's last stroke of genius. It's weird that's it's not on AM. What an irresistible groove.

2. Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez - "La Wally"

A really nice and odd little group.

10) Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it To Death
47) Sia-Buttons
63) Modest Mouse-Baby Blue Sedan
No offense intended to Sia, but this bracket was always going to be an epic face off between the sweet sweet power pop of Game Theory (consider me sold on them Listyguy) and funk d'excellence of the JBs. In this case, Game Theory takes the crown for far exceeding my rather modest expectations, while "Doin' It" doesn't quite achieve the lofty standard I set for it (though it got closer and closer to the mountain top with each subsequent listen). Neither one of the last two songs do much for me, Sia gets a little closer to hitting the spot and earns third place props for her efforts.

Presley Pack
37) American Football-Never Meant
20) Edu Lobo-Kyrie
50) The Triffids - Red Pony
61) Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez-La Wally Aria
It is brackets like this that make me wish I could just give every song 2.5 points, none of these songs deserve to simply fade back into relative obscurity... With that being said, it wasn't "that" difficult to rank these tracks either. "Never Meant" managed to make a quick connection with my inner angst-ridden teenager, which when combined with that ever solid instrumentation, made for a tough act to beat. Edu Lobo's rather bonkers excuse for a song was very nearly up for the task, but its slightly discordant opening minute holds it back a little in my eyes. "Red Pony" has a riff for days, not to mention a very solid song underneath it, but it kinda grows tired a little bit by the end. And finally, I will be the first to admit that Operatic music has never been my strong suit, but even still, Madame Fernandez' absolutely angelic voice still left it in the running.

Overall, this was a very strong week (easily beating the comparable week in Bracketology), and I look forward to next week's brackets with great enthusiasm :music-listening:

Easy choice for Game Theory here, though there are 6 or 7 songs I like better from Lolita Nation (a testament to the album, not a slight on "Mammoth Gardens").

1) Edu Lobo-Kyrie

Poll Closed!

I seem to notice the voters seem to know which song wins the group, but second place is much more competitive. For both groups this week, it was no exception.

Correct me if I'm wrong, please!

BONO GROUP
Fred Wesley and the JB's-Doin' it To Death (67, 11)
Game Theory-Mammoth Gardens (52, 3)
--
Sia-Buttons (42, 4)
Modest Mouse-Baby Blue Sedan (40, 2)

For once, the song of the week comes from the top group. JB never relented his strong lead. Modest Mouse had a strong push for most of the week, but over the weekend Game Theory took full control of second.

It's a battle of the Bruce in the elimination round as "Doin it to Death" will be paired with "Eddie's Love". Game Theory gets the epic Tantra track next round.

ELVIS PRESLEY GROUP
Triffids-Red Pony (60, 10)
Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez-La Wally Aria (49, 5)
---
Edu Lobo-Kyrie (48, 4)
American Football-Never Meant (42, 1)

Triffids held the lead from the first vote to the last. Though the lead diminished a bit, they still win by a wide margin. Only the last vote put "La Wally" ahead, and by a single vote as well. American Football almost had zero top votes, but Luke's vote came at basically the eleventh hour, preventing a full shutout.

Triffids face the New Radicals next stage, while Wilhelmina takes her aria to one of the darlings of the tournament, "Exile (Vilify)". The latter will be a good game.

That was a slow week! Whatever! Let's keep this train rolling!
