AM All Time ranking over the years

Post by Henrik »

Here are the AM all time lists, roughly from the end of each year since the website started.

2000: Albums
2002: Albums, Singles
2003: Albums, Singles
2004: Albums, Singles
2005: Albums, Songs
2006: Albums, Songs
2007: Albums, Songs
2008: Albums, Songs
2009: Albums, Songs
2010: Albums, Songs
2011: Albums, Songs
2012: Albums, Songs
2013: Albums, Songs

No link means that the list wasn't updated that year.

Edit: I added the album list from 2000. The first sign of my alltime ranking on the web! Before I had my own website I sent that top 500 list to Julian's Rock Lists.

Very interesting. I'm surprised by how quickly "OK Computer" became a classic in the eyes of the critical establishment.

Any predictions of the future based on these charts? Will "A Day in the Life", "Billie Jean", "Sympathy for the Devil", "God Only Knows", "Heroes", "Waterloo Sunset" and "Gimme Shelter" continue their climb towards the top?

There are also some songs that show a rather persistent fall; "Stairway to Heaven" (which definitely seems to have lost the title "best non-single" to "A Day in the Life"), "Louie Louie" and "You Really Got Me" (very interesting to see the different trends of "Waterloo Sunset" and "You Really Got Me" in the same graph).

I edited the first post and added an album list from 2000. It was the first sign of my alltime ranking on the web, before I had my own website. I sent that top 500 list to Julian's Rock Lists (rocklist.net), which was definitely my primary source for that list. Nowadays my primary source is YOU. :greetings-waveyellow:

I have changed the scale to logarithmic. Here are 61-100. Some great leaps forward here!

A major fall for "Reach Out", from place 12 to 56 in 12 years time.

Over to albums. Again using a logaritmic scale. I hope that isn't too confusing.

There's not nearly as much movement as for songs, but there are some winners and losers.

Winners:
OK Computer
Thriller
The Queen Is Dead
Funeral
Kid A
Is This It
Doolittle
Grace
Appetite for Destruction
Daydream Nation
The Bends
Endtroducing.....
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Elephant
Back in Black
...and of course My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy's rise in the last update

Losers:
Rubber Soul
The Band
Innervisions
Blue
The Clash
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
Otis Blue
Hunky Dory
Bringing It All Back Home
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
This Year's Model
Moondance
Imagine

All winners are from the 1980s-2010s and all losers are from the 1960s-1970s! Talk about a shift, although the trend is slow - the top 100 is still dominated by the 1960s-1970s.

About the top 10, there were big differences between the 2000 and 2002 lists, with "Blonde On Blonde" going from #1 to #7 and "Revolver" from #8 to #1!. I remember that the top 10 was extremely close then. But in fact the top 10 has been close after 2002 as well, but amazingly the order has stayed almost the same.

Albums in the top 100 2000 and not in the top 100 2014 (the real losers):

Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True (from 54 to 112)
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story (from 68 to 169)
Tricky - Maxinquaye (from 69 to 159)
Pretenders - Pretenders (from 70 to 175)
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night (from 73 to 167)
Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps (from 75 to 145)
Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of the Town (from 76 to 106)
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure (from 79 to 110)
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book (from 81 to 129)
Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA (from 83 to 149)
The Mothers of Invention - We're Only in It for the Money (from 85 to 229!)
The Wailers - Catch a Fire (from 86 to 146)
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones (from 87 to 108)
The Smiths - The Smiths (from 88 to 180)
Blondie - Parallel Lines (from 90 to 126)
Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark (from 91 to 185)
Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel (from 92 to 151)
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (from 94 to 179)
Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis (from 95 to 101)
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (from 96 to 200)
Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul (from 97 to 136)
Iggy Pop - Lust for Life (from 99 to 289!)
The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (from 100 to 240!)

So, even if the trend is slower for albums than for songs, there's been quite a lot of rotation over the 14 years.

Kind of depressing to see the albums that used to hold residence in the top 100! (Come back, Born in the U.S.A. :( ) Though I also like to see a new success story leap into that area. Had no idea Blonde on Blonde was part of the all-time #1 club.

Would the change since Blonde on Blonde's #1 spot in 2000 (as an example) probably indicate a downgrade in critical opinion, a broadening of critic sources, or a change in the method of statistics?

Good question. As I recently said in another thread, there have been changes in the method between all updates, and they might have been unfavourable to "Blonde on Blonde". But I doubt that would be the only factor. I think it's rather a combination of the first two, or just one of them.

It seemed like most of the big fallers were also songs from the 50s-early 60s. So do you think that is a measure of many of the "oldies" songs falling out of the public consciousness, or just natural regression?

My biggest surprise in these trends is the trajectory of Neil Young's late 70s output. It may be a symptom of a Young just having so many good albums that critics don't want to include too many by the same artist so all the NY love goes to After The Gold Rush and Harvest.

I think the broadening of sources, but also probably that the selection for which Bob Dylan to take for a list varies widely. I'm not sure if you could really speak of a downgrade in critical opinion, because Blonde on Blonde is still in the top 10 and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

I think Blonde On Blonde has been falling for the same reason Neil Young albums seem to be falling. There are so many good ones they split each others' votes.
