Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 4

Post by Listyguy »

I'm in a rush, so nothing creative this week. Sorry.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.

Here are the brackets:

58. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
71. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)
186. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)
199. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)

17. Caribou/Manitoba - Odessa (2010)
112. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)
145. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
240. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)

52. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
77. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)
180. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)
205. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)

32. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)
97. Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
160. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)
225. Estelle - American Boy (2008)

199. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)
71. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)
186. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)
58. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
I'll go with what Pitchfork called "an indie epic of cathartic self-loathing", it's propulsive drums, a solo guitar as cool as it gets in indie rock, simple but reliable lyrics. Easily my favorite staple and a great showcase of some of the things I enjoy so much in 00s indie.
Harder Better Faster Stronger have some of the 40 best seconds in electronic music from 2:00 to 2:40, but before that it's basically a build up and the last minute is completely useless.
New Slaves is one of the songs I like the least in Yeezus, but then again I seem to be the only one whose favorite song in there is Hold My Liquor...

112. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)
17. Caribou - Odessa (2010)
240. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
145. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
People who don't know Not In Love should probably listen to the version with Robert Smith because that's the one which appears in most EOY lists.
Back in 2010 I would have without a doubt put Odessa on top, but Not in Love is a song as surprisingly often go back to while I've grown a bit bored of Odessa (just a bit). I like how both hide in dancing beats some subdued sadfeelings. Not in Love in particular is both a fantastic club banger and a very melancholic song.
Say My Name, by Beyonce, her 2 chorist and that other girl that would not be there for long anyway is a fun 90s R&B song, though in this particular genre TLC did better. I like the rebelious wild Destiny's Child of Bootylicious or Independent Women a bit more.
And Let's Dance is great Bowie romp too, but that's a bracket I really enjoy all the way.

52. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
77. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)
180. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)
205. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)
I would not consider Jesus, Etc. the best track of an album that contains I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Poor Places or the strangely underrated Radio Cure, but that's still a lovely song that easily takes this bracket away. My issue with Stagger Lee is that I don't feel that the music and delivery fits the theme and the lyrics, so I leave the edge to Nirvana.
And I don't care for It's a Sin.

32. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)
225. Estelle - American Boy (2008)
160. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)
97. Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
Easy pick for #1, even if for me the real masterpiece in Two Suns was Glass.
#2 could have gone either way, but Mirrors is not on my top 5 Justin Timberlake's songs while American Boy might be the only good songs ever produced by will.i.am.

1. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)
2. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)
3. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
4. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)

All of these are very good, not great, in my mind.

1. Caribou/Manitoba - Odessa (2010)
2. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
3. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
4. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)

Very uninspiring group from top to bottom. "Odessa" wins by default, though I like other things by Caribou more.

1. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
2. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)
3. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)
4. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)

Much better group than above, Top 3 all would have won. None of these in my Top 2000 though.

1. Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
2. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)
3. Estelle - American Boy (2008)
4. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)

Easily the best group in this bunch, Are 'Friends' Electric is the only one in my T1000, but like the other 3 here a lot.

New Slaves
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Nothing Ever Happened
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
I hadn't heard the Kanye track before; now I can't stop listening to it. I guess I need to listen to "Yeezus".

Not In Love
Let's Dance
Odessa
Say My Name
Top two are both great, I wouldn't be mad with either of them making it through.

Lithium
Jesus, Etc.
Stagger Lee
It's a Sin
I love the top two tremendously. Either would have won any bracket this week. It's terrible they're both in this one though. "Lithium" gets the edge, being my favorite song from "Nevermind"

Are Friends Electric
American Boy
Daniel
Mirrors
Shitty bracket. The Newman track isn't that great, but it's good enough to beat pretty boring songs. I've heard "American Boy" many times, but never knew it by name. "Daniel" is very boring in my opinion, and an 8-minute Timberlake song is not a good idea at all. Of course, the critics ate it up because an 8-minute song MUST be sprawling and experimental and a bold move by a pop icon (all sarcasm).

We have another group of ridiculously close brackets this week. Here are the current scores for them (not in bracket order):

42-39-39
47-43

58. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
186. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)
199. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)
71. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)
The top three in this bracket were difficult to sort out. Easily the toughest bracket this week for me. Kanye gets the edge because Kanye, and HBFS takes second because of those 40 seconds at the 2:00 mark Nassim pointed out.

17. Caribou/Manitoba - Odessa (2010)
145. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
112. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)
240. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
I had bad memories of "Say My Name" prior to listening to it for this game, but I realized it's damn good... but still fourth.

52. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
77. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)
205. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)
180. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)

160. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)
225. Estelle - American Boy (2008)
97. Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
32. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)
"Mirrors" takes this in a landslide. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the bracket, but the JT epic was just too good to touch. It's a shame radio edits are a thing, because I would love to hear the entirety of that song while in the car.

186. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)
199. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)
58. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
71. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)

"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" wins the group with its sublime addition. Maybe my favorite Daft Punk song. 2-3 are close with Deerhunter getting second, though it would have been Kanye at two if he was a better rapper. I want no part of CSNY.

240. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
17. Caribou - Odessa (2010)
145. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
112. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)

Close at the top, but I prefer Caribou's "Sun" to "Odessa" and I'm not sure that there's a Destiny's Child song I prefer to "Say My Name" so the latter wins out. I do not like either of the bottom two songs so their order is arbitrary.

205. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)
52. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
180. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)
77. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)

Synthpop over alt country by a hair here. I like "Stagger Lee," but there's other versions of the song that I prefer. "Lithium" is awful guitar rock making it an easy choice for #4.

97. Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
225. Estelle - American Boy (2008)
160. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)
32. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)

My favorite bracket. "Are 'Friends' Electric?" is by Tubeway Army (not solo Gary Numan). In any event, I love my synths so little wonder it takes this bracket. Kanye West demonstrates how to properly do an intro (take note, Jay-Z) and Estelle delivers a killer hook to edge out JT for second. "Mirrors" is very good, but Timberlake has had better epic pop songs ("What Comes Around..." comes to mind). I'll take pop over indie though, so the lovely "Daniel" gets fourth (it would have fared better in the other brackets).

Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Kanye West - New Slaves
Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened

The CSNY song is one of two songs this week in my top 500 songs. It's an incredible example of the classic rock from the late 60's, and I love the harmonies, the multi part suite, and especially the do do do's and the Spanish at the end of the song. Truly phenomenal, and CSNY's best song (in my opinion). Next up is Daft Punk, with a song of their I've always found a little overrated by most Daft Punk fans, but is a bit more appropriately rated on this site. It's just pure fun, and a highlight of "Discovery" (though FAR from the best song). Kanye trails a little behind with "New Slaves", my second favorite song off of my fourth favorite album of his. That being said, this song is a direct refutation of anyone who said "Yeezus" didn't have any great lyrics on it. Finally we end up with "Nothing Ever Happened", a solid song, but I strongly prefer other Deerhunter songs like "Helicopter" and "Desire Lines" to it.

Caribou - Odessa
Crystal Castles - Not in Love
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Destiny's Child - Say My Name

Caribou comes in first with a song whose beauty and intricate detail hide its sinister lyrics. But if you're able to detach yourself from those lyrics for a moment and pay attention to the sounds going on here, you're in for a treat. And then go back and listen to the great lyrics. "Not In Love" is a VERY close second. The original off of the second Crystal Castles album is a fine song, but the re-release (which is the one with all the acclaim) featuring Robert Smith is just something else altogether. A synthpop song of epic proportions. "Let's Dance" is fun, synthy Bowie, who comes with a single that I've always thought sounded a little ominous. Surely I can't be alone on this one? And last is "Say My Name", a competent R&B song, but that's about it.

Wilco - Jesus, Etc.
Nirvana - Lithium
Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee
Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin

Wilco leads with the other song in my top 500, "Jesus, Etc.". An alt-country ballad with cryptic lyrics singing about shaking skyscrapers and last cigarettes. The simplicity and the emotional tension that go in within this songs strings alone is immense and captivating. Then we come to "Lithium", a very strong song that perfectly embodies in both music and lyrics the grunge ethos. Still, this hard rocker is only my 4th or so favorite song off of "Nevermind", and so it gets second place pretty easily. The next two song a good amount behind, but "Stagger Lee"'s simple and to the point nature (along with the storytelling) wins over Pet Shop Boy's good, but overbloated "It's a Sin".

Justin Timberlake - Mirrors
Estelle - American Boy
Bat for Lashes - Daniel
Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric?

These four songs are all really, really close, so their order may have changed any other day you asked me. But Timberlake comes out on top, with a sprawling and experimental and bold move by a pop icon. "American Boy" is next, with strong Kanye verses, a bouncy production, and Estelle's great voice. Then we get to "Daniel", which is more or less 80's revivalism done right, and "Are Friends Electric?", a stomping and robotic synthpop tune that could very well have been number 1 another day.

I wish I could put CSNY's lovely harmonies higher, but the base song isn't all that great in my opinion.

240. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
17. Caribou/Manitoba - Odessa (2010)
145. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)

Probably the strongest bracket in the game so far, all of these deserve to advance.

Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: 8
Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened: 7.5
Kanye West - New Slaves: 6
Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes: 3.5

One of Daft Punk's best (in my not-so-informed opinion) edges out a nice track by Deerhunter. The Kanye track was pretty good by my general appreciation of his music, and CSNY predictably finish last.

David Bowie - Let's Dance: 9
Crystal Castles - Not in Love: 8
Caribou/Manitoba - Odessa: 7.5
Destiny's Child - Say My Name: 3

Bowie's commercial makeover was a big hit, and I think rightfully so. I prefer "China Girl" and the unheralded "Criminal World" from that album, but "Let's Dance" is a hoot. The Crystal Castles track is also very good, with Robert Smith's vocal a real treat. I've heard "Odessa" a number of times and keep forgetting about it, but it's eerie skulk is always welcome. Beyonce is a complete pox on humanity, but "Say My Name" is one of the least horrible songs with which she's been associated.

Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin: 10
Nirvana - Lithium: 9.5
Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee: 5.5
Wilco - Jesus, Etc.: 4

Two huge favorites against two tracks that I don't care about. "It's a Sin" has probably become my favorite PSB track, its immense drama growing ever more invigorating for me. "Lithium" is my favorite on Nevermind by quite some distance, and only second to "Heart Shaped Box" in Nirvana's discography. "Stagger Lee" did very little to interest me, but that's still quite a bit more than that ever-boring Wilco.

Bat for Lashes - Daniel: 10
Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric?: 10
Estelle - American Boy: 6
Justin Timberlake - Mirrors: 2.5

This is just unfair. "Daniel" and "Are 'Friends' Electric?" are both among my top 100 songs ever, the former an amazing marriage of The Cure's "A Forest", Kate Bush's magic and childhood longing, while the latter a pioneering synth pop centerpiece to an album-long ode to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? with beautifully strange arpeggios. My favorite songs of the game so far, by far. Estelle sounds completely pedestrian in contrast, though "American Boy" sounds better now than it did when it was shoved down my throat ad nauseum in 2008. For the life of me, I'll never understand how Timberlake gets any acclaim, but I can sometimes recognize some decent elements in certain tracks (e.g. "My Love"). Not the case here. I'm genuinely shocked that there's a song I'm rating lower than "Say My Name".

1. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)
2. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
3. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)
4. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)

“Nothing Ever Happened,” a fantastic melding of indie and Krautrock, is one of my favorite tracks of the last ten years, edging out the brilliantly angry, racially charged centerpiece of Yeezus, CSN’s great but overplayed classic-rock warhorse, and a terrific (and Kanye-sampled) DP track that unfortunately brings up the rear in this company.

1. Caribou/Manitoba - Odessa (2010)
2. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
3. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
4. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)

I wish at least one song from the previous bracket had been in this one; “Odessa” is pretty great (and has the added bonus of actually being about something), but it wins this one more or less by default. “Let’s Dance” is good but overplayed, and I still can’t believe that it was Bowie’s biggest hit (in the U.S., at least), and the other two just don’t do much for me.

1. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)
2. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)
3. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
4. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)

The second bracket could have used one of these, too. No contest for me, though – “Lithium” would probably be in my all-time top ten. It’s a … shame (what did you think I was going to say?) that my favorite PSB track has to compete with it. I’ve never quite understood why “Jesus, Etc.” is the most-acclaimed track on YHF, and “Stagger Lee” is a great oldie but nothing more (and a severely watered-down version of the story as well – check out Nick Cave’s version sometime).

1. Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
2. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)
3. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)
4. Estelle - American Boy (2008)

An interesting bracket, comprising four tracks with which I haven’t been that familiar; they’re all quite catchy and memorable in different ways. Numan’s (technically credited to Tubeway Army) pioneering new-wave track gets the edge over JT’s grandiose – but way overlong, like most of 20/20 – wall of sound (that intro is amazing). BfL is a fascinating artist whose work I need to immerse myself in more.

A day a a few hours left to get those votes in! Every bracket is separated by less than 5 points, and many can be changed with a single vote!

Also, I should be able to close the poll at a normal time tomorrow, but don't hold me to that.

Also, "Not In Love" and "New Slave" are easily my two best discoveries through the first four weeks of the poll.

In contrast to other people here I feel this is easily the weakest week up till now, with many good songs, but only one masterpiece to these ears.

3. Kanye West - New Slaves (2013)
5. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened (2008)
10. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)
11. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)

Solid is the word for this group. Everything is definitely above average and the first two are quite strong. I listened to Yeezus only once, at the start of this year when it seemed to become the most acclaimed album of the year. It completely passed me by then and made no impression, but listening more closely to New Slaves made it sound better than I remembered, so maybe I should give Yeezus another listen.

4. Caribou - Odessa (2010)
7. David Bowie - Let's Dance (1983)
14. Destiny's Child - Say My Name (1999)
15. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (2010)

The weakest group of the week and the game so far. Caribou wins this ease, even though Bowie is on form too. But Destiny's Child delivers an average pop song, but that's still more than I can say about Not in Love, which makes no impression on me whatsoever.

1. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (1987)
2. Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (2002)
9. Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (1958)
13. Nirvana - Lithium (1991)

Ah, luckily we have the ever dependable Pet Shop Boys to save the week. They're probably my favorite synth and dance band ever and this is their masterpiece: a song filled to the brim with many great elements. It should be overproduced, but it all adds up somehow. The lyrics are fun too. My favorite dance song of all time, I think. Jesus, Etc. isn't exactly a minor effort either and a great listen. Stagger Lee is a good song in a genre I listen too little to. Only Lithium is lesser song to these ears. It's good, but it never particularly stood out to me on Nevermind. It's ok.

6. Bat for Lashes - Daniel (2009)
8. Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (1979)
12. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (2013)
16. Estelle - American Boy (2008)

Another not so stellar line-up. Daniel is the kind of moody synth-pop I like, but if it had brought something really new to the table it could have been a masterpiece. Are 'Friends' Electric is very original, but I appreciate it more from a distance. Mirrors is okay Timberlake. In fact, Timberlake is always just okay, but there is no need for his songs to last 8+ minutes. I don't see why it is daring or experimental: it doesn't sound particularly innovative.
Now American Boy is the worst song up till now and hopefully in the entire game. I admit, I don't like Estelle's voice for some reason. Especially when she sings in a slightly higher register during the chorus she annoys me. This is exactly the kind of song you don't want to become overplayed. Sadly, at the time it was released I daily used a subway in Amsterdam and my station played that song through the speakers on a loop for about a year. No other song, ever! My very limited good-will towards it has completely been destroyed, so it get's no sympathy for me.
