Recommendations for the 2014 alltime album poll

Post by nicolas »

THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL THREAD

This is the place where you can post your alltime lists, temporary or final, and/or recommandations for albums. But beware that YOU HAVE TO SEND YOUR LIST TO DOCBROWN for your list to be commpiled. To take part in the poll, ou'll find instructions here

This thread is only for those who wish to share their lists and/or find good recommandations if you think you can change your list until late september.

Here is my ongoing top 200 on RYM. I'll post a top 500 later, that I will edit every week or so.

The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle (my #3 all-time) A very uplifting and positive album.

Exuma - Exuma (#24) Very unique. Genre is described as freak folk. He's from the Bahamas.
Exuma - Exuma II (#63) Both albums were released in 1970, yet they're surprisingly different. Both masterpieces in my opinion. His later albums aren't so highly rated.

That's all for now at least. My list is pretty basic.
I feel like that

I've just submitted my list. Otherwise I would have been in the massive pile of people who are going to wait until the last day.

My list is kind of generic, but here are the albums I feel might be ignored or lesser known on the forum:
Ennio Morricone-The Good the Bad and the Ugly (127)
Ennio Morricone-Once Upon a Time in the West (344)

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is one of my top 10 films, and its soundtrack has a lot to do with it. Morricone is simply an awesome musician.

Philip Glass-Koyaanisqatsi (449)
Angelo Badalamenti-Twin Peaks (329)

Two more awesome scores.

These New Puritans-Hidden (418)

One of the more recent albums on my list. It's simply an album I've heard nothing else like.

Sleigh Bells-Treats (139)

Another awesome modern album. Unfortunately Sleigh Bells' quality dropped enormously after their debut, but Treats is still fantastic.

Swans-To Be Kind (90)
Sun Kil Moon-Benji (146)
LCD Soundsystem-The Long Goodbye (148)
St. Vincent-St. Vincent (172)
Todd Terje-It's Album Time (348)
Tune-Yards-Nikki Nack (430)
Sharon Van Etten-Are We There (490)

I.e. the albums from this year.

Fela Kuti-Zombie (221)

I feel this does have a following on the forum, but it still deserves mention. I still love how I was introduced to Fela Kuti through Grand Theft Auto IV. One of the stations in the game was nothing but his music.

The Sonics-Here Are the Sonics (91)

The Sonics are one of the most underappreciated bands from the 60s. I love their vocals.

Big Black-Songs About Fucking (192)
Big Black-Atomizer (291)

These albums are both kind of obscure and a sound that doesn't get enough love.

Sufjan Stevens-The Age of Adz (181)
Fucked Up-David Comes to Life (236)
Jessie Ware-Devotion (238)

The albums from the 2010s that will hopefully gain more acclaim with time. I don't know how popular they are on the forum, but I feel they should be much higher on this acclaimed music list. Unfortunately The Age of Adz didn't get the best reception at first. It might not be as great as Illinois, but it's still outstanding.

The Knife-Shaking the Habitual (47)

My personal favorite album of last year. Even if you hated it, try it again. The more you listen the more you realize how much of a perfect pop album it is. As harsh as it is at first, there's something primal underlying the off-kilter rhythms and wailing synths.

My Morning Jacket-Z (68)

I just never see this album talked about. I feel like it's still waiting to truly be discovered, like the 2000s equivalent of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

Thank you Nicolas, and my top 500 (already tabulated in the poll) can be found here. Because I'm using the AM database as a base template for the poll, I'm counting the number of entries I have to add (ie- those not already listed in AM) which generate extra work for me. My count is an alarming 236 (or 46.4% of my list).

Stop me if you've heard me say this before, but I highly recommend Game Theory, especially their albums Lolita Nation and The Big Shot Chronicles.

The top albums from my list that are not among the 'Usual suspects':

6. Tim Buckley - Starsailor

Amazing freak-folk album ahead of its time.

13. Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance

One of the best of the post-punk movement

14. Maquis de Sade - Rue de Siam

The hardest to find physically out of the top 3000, a great new wave album

16. Arvo Part - Tabula Rasa

Really awesome modern classical.

34. Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America

Another Best Moderately Acclaimed Album discovery of mine, reminds me of early Liz Phair

36. Fela Kuti - Zombie

Winner of a BMAA, featuring one of the greatest singles of all time

41. Bridgitte Fontaine - Comme a la Radio

In the first BMAA where albums were seeded, it was the 16th seed and won its division, making it to the quarterfinals. Great french pop.

42. Bert Jansch - Bert Jansch

I first discovered him opening for Neil Young because he was such a big influence on him. Beautiful, simple music.

43. Anais Mitchell - Hadestown

A folk opera which reimagines the story of Orpheus where hell is a corporate dystopia.

I hereby do solemnly swear to nominate an Anais Mitchell album in every forum game where it is an option. I saw her on New Years Eve at a First Night performance. She was awesome.

61. The Slits - Cut

Great girl-punk album

72. Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil

Fusion of African and Latin styles

I got into Night Vale about a year ago via a friend who is also hooked on it :music-listening:
I honestly don't remember much about her performance (or any others in the podcast really), most of them end up being rather unmemorable, and I think the Eliza Rickman track was the only time I was inspired to purchase the respective song.

Krautrock, people. Krautrock.

Kraftwerk always gets a good showing in AM polls, for which I'm very grateful, but the 70s polls have made me realized that there may not be a lot of love for other German artists of the time period. And Kraftwerk's early albums, especially Kraftwerk and Ralf und Florian are worth a listen.

Can's Tago Mago gets a decent amount of acclaim, but Ege Bamyasi, Future Days, and Soon Over Babaluma are just as good.

Other Krautrock albums I've discovered or rediscovered a love for through the 70s poll:
Amon Duul - Yeti
Ash Ra Tempel - Ash Ra Tempel
Popol Vuh - In Den Garten Pharos
Faust - So Far, Faust IV
Neu - Neu!, Neu 2, Neu '75
Cluster - Zuckerzeit
Tangerine Dream - Zeit, Atem, Phaedra
Harmonia - Deluxe
Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht, Timewind
Manuel Gottsching - Inventions for Electric Guitar, E2-E4 (this last one is more proto-techno)

Re: Recommandations for the 2014 alltime album poll

Post by McJagger »

Are EPs allowed? If so, I'll likely put The Clean's "Boodle Boodle Boodle", The Buzzcocks' "Spiral Scratch", and The Nerves' self-titled on my list. Some others that many people might forget about or may not even be aware of, and deserve your attention and acclamation, include: The Soft Boy's "Underwater Moonlight", Tom Ze's "Estudando o samba", Herbie Hancock's "Sextant", Kevin Coyne's "Marjory Razorblade", Silver Apples' self-titled, Miles Davis' "Dark Magus", Krzysztof Komeda's "Astigmatic", This Heat's "Deceit", Scott Walker's "The Drift", and Charles Mingus' "Let My Children Hear Music".

Romain, I think you should made it clear to DocBrown which album it is, Dutronc has about half a dozen self-titled albums ;) I will assume it's the 1966 one though.

Great lists, French boys! I'm not sure how much my list will cross yours though, regarding French albums. I'm more modern rock and electronic inclined :music-rockon:

This is not the actual official thread for the poll, McJagger, the correct one is the following:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1963

However, I believe this question has been raised and DocBrown said he would accept every albums inducted on AM, and make his own judgement about the submitted EPs that are not inducted on AM. You must submit them in the official thread for the poll. ;)

You are right Pierre, it's the first one, the 1966 album (other name "Et moi, et moi, et moi").

How are you guys maintaining your formatting when posting to the forum? I have compiled my list in Excel and when I copy and paste it to here the columns do not look as neat as they do in Excel (or when I copy and paste to Word for that matter).

Rank Artist Album
1 The Clash London Calling
2 Television Marquee Moon
3 Slint Spiderland

to...

Rank|Artist|Album
1|The Clash|London Calling
2|Television|Marquee Moon
3|Slint|Spiderland

If "rank" is in A1, "artist" in B1 and "album" in C1, then you can use this formula:

=A1&"|"&B1&"|"&C1

You might want to change #81 from Nick Cave to Nick Drake.

Re: Recommandations for the 2014 alltime album poll

Post by Live in Phoenix »

Currently I have 177 studio albums at 5 stars, though it looks like I can now add a volume of Robert Johnson’s or Louis Armstrong’s early recordings, Elvis's Sun Sessions, and… something or other with Hank Williams? I don't even know how many 4 star albums I have...might be interesting to find out.

Here are some relatively unsung items. Albums in bold are within my all-time top 10.

Tori Amos - The Beekeeper
Tori Amos - American Doll Posse
I had slowly lost interest in Tori over the years, but super-long concept albums seem to help her muse.

Louis Armstrong - The Hot Fives & Hot Sevens, Vol. II (Columbia Jazz Masterpieces)

Bambi - The Original Soundtrack
My favorite Disney movie and soundtrack.

Basia - Time and Tide

David Bowie - Tonight

The Congos - The Heart of the Congos

Marshall Crenshaw - Marshall Crenshaw
Marshall Crenshaw - Field Day

Debussy - Works for Piano, Volume 5, EMI Classics, Aldo Ciccolini (i.e. Suite Bergamasque, Pour le Piano, Arabesques)
This puts all of my favorite Debussy tracks together, although the version of Arabesque no. 1 here is too fast.

Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy

The Empire Strikes Back - The Original Soundtrack

Enya - Shepherd Moons
More pop-oriented than most performers in her genre. If I could only recommend one New Age album...

Jeffery Fredericks et al. - Have Moicy!

Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy
The ACTUAL band is missed, but this is more consistent than usual; looking forward to 2025, man!

Justin Hayward - Songwriter
Justin Hayward - Moving Mountains
Though everyone in the Moody Blues contributes well-written songs, Hayward is basically the star of the group. No matter how good the nearby Moody Blues record, Hayward's solo album is typically better.

Howlin' Wolf - Howlin' Wolf
Howlin' Wolf - Moanin' in the Moonlight
This is where Captain Beefheart got all of his vocal moves from.

Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Billy Idol - Whiplash Smile
Have I ever told anyone that I like Billy Idol records? A lot of credit should go to his guitarist Steve Stevens, as well; they're back together again, but the '80s were more fun.

The Indestructible Beat of Soweto

Kiss Me, Kate - Original Cast Recording

Bob Marley and the Wailers - Rastaman Vibration

The Melachrino Strings - Music from Greenwillow

The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn
The Moody Blues - The Other Side of Life

The Motels - All Four One
Kind of new wave, but with a menacing arena rock edge.

Oingo Boingo - Nothing to Fear
Oingo Boingo - Good for Your Soul
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party
When I was big into grunge, these new wave guys weren't cool, but my friend played the hell out of them; then he got sick of them, and I finally lightened up.

Joan Osborne - Relish

The Phantom of the Opera - Original Cast Recording

Elvis Presley - The Sun Sessions
Elvis Presley - Elvis' Christmas Album

The Pretenders - Learning to Crawl
The Pretenders - Get Close

Carly Simon - Coming Around Again

Frank Sinatra - Where Are You?
If you like "Only the Lonely"-type Sinatra, this one is maybe even more depressing. It's impossible to listen to "I'm a Fool to Want You" and not think of Ava Gardner. (Sinatra is a co-writer)

Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
Someone thought the previous Sleater-Kinney albums weren't loud enough.

The Slits - Cut

Star Wars - The Original Soundtrack

Sting - ...Nothing Like the Sun
Sting - The Soul Cages
These two albums were made after his mother and father respectively passed away. For The Soul Cages, I don't think he got on with his father too well, but it's also the more focused album.

The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free

The Sundays - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
Depressing but saucy, with spare instrumentation. One of the very best uses of the Smiths' formula.

James Taylor - Never Die Young

Thompson Twins - Here's to Future Days

Suzanne Vega - Suzanne Vega
Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing
I was never a big fan of the "Maureen Tucker" vocal school. Vega has a great voice, and there's an austerity here that you don't usually find in albums.

Neil Young - Neil Young
Neil Young - American Stars n' Bars
Neil Young - Harvest Moon
Neil Young - Sleeps with Angels
Perhaps Neil breeds eccentricity in his fans, because I think these albums are practically made out of magic, while some of his classics seem only "very good." These can be messy, but somehow it all hangs together. I was waiting and waiting (and finally got sick of waiting) for his recent output to come near his early '90s renaissance.

Re: Recommandations for the 2014 alltime album poll

Post by Jeff »

I do not think I've ever took the time to rank my all-time favorite albums. I'll try to shoot for a list of 500, but the further down I get the more difficult it becomes. Here's my VERY tentative top 100 with classical recordings included (which I'm pretty sure DocBrown said are eligible for the poll even though they're not eligible for AM). The top 25 or so I feel pretty good about, the rest could change radically in a month's time, especially as I look through the other posted lists. And yes, that is indeed a Britney Spears album at 95. At a certain point, my approach became, "what if I was limited to x amount of albums for the rest of my life?" So I started selecting stuff that I really like from underrepresented genres figuring that in this album limited thought experiment I'd rather have my favorite teen pop album handy instead of my seventh favorite Detroit Techno or free jazz album.

If I was going to try and get more people to vote for, it would be for old broadway musicals, or their hollywood soundtrack equivalents. In my list, I have the soundtracks for The Music Man, A Chorus Line, and Pacific Overtures. I probably could put more, but I decided against it.

Camelot, My Fair Lady, Kiss Me, Kate, and West Side Story will likely be on my list. If I'm going to participate in the 1960s poll, I'm definitely going to rely on some musicals to get by.

Oh hey, did I successfully sell something? The album's a tad uneven, but there's a number of songs I like about as much as "Luka," which must be why I've placed the album so high. Her pretty yet sort of remote voice is unsettling.

I agree. It's one of few songs I immediatly love when I heard it for the first time in the radio and I hummed it regularly, no matter what I do. It as no aged at all.

Doug Martsch really put his heart of his music and lyrics, creating for me the ultimate indie rock masterpiece. The melodies are perfect, the guitar solos stunning, the way instruments interplay with each other is wonderful, even the lyrics are great... it's hard for me to explain clearly why I love it so much because a big part of it is how this music connects to me in an almost spiritual level, it sometimes seems like those songs are saying stuff about me I would not be able to put into words.

#2 Elliott Smith - Either/Or
The most beautiful achievement in delicate songwriting. I know some people don't like how sad and sometimes self-loathing this music is, but it also always looks at the beauty around and always keeps hope in better days. I guess Gillingham loves "Things we Lost in the Fire" for about the same reasons as I like this (well, the Low album should be in my top 50 too so...)

Top 20 : Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die
That might be the polar opposite of Either/Or, very happy and sunny album with 10 ideas per songs. While in a completely different genre, it shares for me the same kind of Australian inventivity and sheer fun as Since I Left You

Top 30 : The Dodos - Visiter
That's turning into a very indie recommendation list... Arcade Fire stripped to the bone, with some harmonies stolen to Animal Collective... you've got the brilliant Visiter !

For my French friends, I will have 2 French albums in my top 75 (maybe 50):

IAM - L'école du Micro d'Argent, the only French hip-hop album that can stand the comparison with any American one any time
La Femme - Psycho Tropical Berlin : fantastic slice of surf-pop mixed with cold wave, both reminiscent of French 80s pop (Daho, Lio or Taxi Girl could come to mind) and sounding like not much else...

Re: Recommendations for the 2014 alltime album poll

Post by Maschine_Man »

It makes me happy to see Homogenic in many lists as it's my #1 and I hope everyone listens to it :music-listening:

For albums that aren't on many peoples list, I have picked three from my Top 15 that aren't on many radars.

#1 Goldfrapp - Supernature (2005)
Felt Mountain is a brilliant album and Black Cherry showed that Goldfrapp were getting ready to launch well into the synthpop territory (not something they expected). Supernature is their most glam, and loud, album to date. The album opener Ooh La La doesn't rank very high on the AM list (#3177 :0) but it's a great opener that sets up all the themes for the album. Lovely 2 C U and Ride On A White Horse continue the glam/drug infused nights/LA themes. I love Allisons voice and I think there are lot of interesting sounds to be found in the album which work with said vocals It may not be revolutionary and it has some flaws, but I don't think there is a wasted/filler track on the album. My favorite song, probably of all time, is Satin Chic. I don't exactly know why but it's the beat and the lyrics, especially "Dressed up lizard green/celluloid seventeen/lipgloss bold as blood/you got em lining up". So good.

#2 The Kills - Midnight Boom (2008)
I see this is on Romains list at #107, which is exciting! To me this album is better if you imagine it as a concept album with a loose story about a couple breaking up/getting back together over a weekend of heavy drinking. I would recommend Cheap and Cheerful and Sour Cherry. This is another loud/looped/intersting lyrics album, it is less glam and more rock though.

#3 Little Dragon - Machine Dreams (2009)
Nabuma Rubberband was really disappointing to me. I have been hoping for years that LD would be able to make something as good as Machine Dreams. An album that is best listened to on a cool, rainy day. It is sparse in lyrics and isn't going anywhere fast like the last two albums. It's better consumed at once but My Step is the standout track from the album with A New and Swimming following hot on its heels.

I love all The Kills albums, really... almost as good as the White Stripes. and Midnight Bloom is their apex. All the songs are great, all.

Some albums that may fly under the radar:

Top 20

Radiohead - The King of Limbs
I feel like the only reason this album hasn't received the same showering of praise as their other albums is because the critics were just bored with praising Radiohead incessantly. I put this album up with their other classics (however, it's only my fourth favorite of theirs; I've got three in my top ten, as well as three Kanye albums  )

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns unranked on AM
No seriously, I kid you not. Linkin Park have received a fair bit of derision throughout their career and sometimes rightfully so, but I find this album to be a true masterpiece. It's a concept album about nuclear warfare and it flows wonderfully throughout. The lyrics are mostly pedestrian, but the production is impeccable, thanks in large part to their collaboration with Rick Rubin.

The Antlers - Hospice
This is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever listened to, simply put. It brings tears to my eyes almost every time I listen to it.

Top 50

Counting Crows - August and Everything After

Relient K - Forget and Not Slow Down unranked on AM
I think the reason I rank this album so highly is that I grew up listening to this band, so I have a connection with them that goes beyond music. I don't really expect it to be a big hit around here, but I'll link a song from the album for you to check out and see if it has an effect on you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ICASGpJDw

New Radicals - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too unranked on AM
It's unranked on this site, which dumbfounds me, but please give the album a shot.

The Horrible Crowes - Elsie unranked on AM
This is the side project of The Gaslight Anthem's lead singer, Brian Fallon. I think this album is far better than anything Gaslight has ever released (I still recommend their albums too, though). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmQXsRkmuSU

Top 100

Pavement - Wowee Zowee

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way

Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me unranked on AM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSX13jgRxI4

Augustana - Can't Love, Can't Hurt unranked on AM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjkiJvachVs

U2 - Zooropa

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

Outside top 100

Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast

Atoms for Peace - Amok

Galaxie 500 - On Fire
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...
