Unacclaimed 2.0 Group Stage: Week 1

Post by whuntva »

Alright, for many of you, it's already Thursday. The thing is I live in Washington, DC. It's only 10:00 Wednesday here.

But I may as well start.

This is a group stage. All the songs were arranged randomly through a web app. Any coincidences you may notice to numbers or genres of songs are purely coincidental.

Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite. Four points for the top, one for the bottom. Top two votes advance. Ties are broken by number of first place votes. If you don't or can't comment, you're vote will still count, but in the spirit of this contest, I want to see them.

Poll ends Sunday, 17 August at 11:59 pm FORUM TIME!!

And now, my special surprise for you. All the groups are named after...singers!

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
12) Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMQUBFzxduw
27) White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfMhL_u10wo
42) Passion Pit - Carried Away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZQ5aNrwYcM
52) Games-Strawberry Skies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5scYXIvAr7w

56) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-Xm7s9eGxU

May the best song win and have fun!

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
Games - Strawberry Skies
Passion Pit - Carried Away
White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward
Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine

I don't know about you but I LOVE 80s synthpop. That and 90s Britpop are my two favorite music eras. Even though this is from 2010, it sound really cool and reminds me of Bananarama, which is never a bad thing.

Passion Pit was never my cup of tea, but this song was uplifting and it just made me feel happy listening to it.

I felt Longtime Sunshine went on too long and got repetitive, ditto for Going Outward. Though neither are "bad" songs.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
Henri Salvador - Dans mon île

Gymnopedie legit moved me to tears. Very few pieces of music can do that. Roy Harper's song was moving and had a strong message. It's the kind of protest song we need more of!

The other two are an okay soundtrack piece and my least favorite song in the contest so far (no offense if you like it).

The Paul McCartney Quartet!

White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward
Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine
Passion Pit - Carried Away
Games - Strawberry Skies

White Denim is right in my sweet spot - folky Britpop influenced sound with a lot of interesting things happening off the beat, like that galloping drum.
Longtime Sunshine is not something I knew from Rivers Cuomo (and I've seen Weezer twice) but it comes from the best period of his writing, around the time of Pinkerton. He can sometimes be too earnest (when he's not being too goofy) but this one stays just on the right side of the line.
Gossamer was a great album, but this is one of my least liked tracks, too bright by half.
Strawberry Skies is exactly why I hate the '80's. Even worse is faux-80's

The Jimi Hendrix experience:

Erik Satie - Gymnopedie No. 1
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
Henri Salvador - Dans mon île

O, you European communists! Erik Satie's Gymnopedia is probably my second favourite classical composition of the 20th century, so 1st place.
Two soundtrack selections, of which the instrumental from Casanova starts slowly with that eerie (harpsichord?) sound and almost loses me by about 1:15 when finally that plucked bass comes in and salvages the whole thing.
Roy Harper's anti-war polemic always struck me as far too obtuse, but I do like his guitar style.
My daughter used to listen to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack endlessly. This is one of the better pieces but not really my cup of tea.

Paul McCartney Group
Passion Pit-Carried Away
Games-Strawberry Skies
White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward
Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine

I actually liked Carried Away quite a bit more than Take a Walk. Quite an ecstatic pop song. Definitely a lot of fun.
Strawberry Skies didn't quite do enough to get a strong reaction out of me, but it sounded nice.
Some Wild Going Outward and Longtime Sunshine just didn't do much for me.

Jimi Hendrix Group
Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1
Henri Salvador-Dans mon ile
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
Nino Rota-O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia

Erik Satie's piece was nice and simple, yet stirs up quite a bit of emotion.
Dans mon ile had a nice rhythm to it. A fun song to listen to.
I like the vocals and lyrics of I Hate the White Man, but it also just keeps going.
The Nino Rota piece didn't really do anything for me.

I liked everything here enough.

I'm a big fan of Mr. Rota, I love the Juliet Of The Spirits ost. Again I'm liking everything!

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
Passion Pit - Carried Away
Games - Strawberry Skies
White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward
Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine

All songs in this group are interesting, but anything with synths tend always to fare better with me. Of the two first, I feel like Carried Away is the best crafted. Of the last two, the Weezer song is the one that did the less for me.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
Henri Salvador - Dans mon île
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man

The two instrumentals take the lead here. Nino Rota's track is the best of the two IMO, a tense and fascinating piece, although the Satie one is also eerily moving. Salvador's track was a revolutionary precursor to Bossa Nova when it was released, but is outmatched for me. Roy Harper's song is ambitious, but it misses something to be a real success for me.

McCartney's Corner
42) Passion Pit - Carried Away
12) Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine
27) White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward
52) Games-Strawberry Skies
I'm a sucker for bright and infectious, and although I can't imagine enjoying an entire album with this level of cheer, Passion Pit gets my vote. After that, Rivers gets a slight edge due to his raw vocal energy near the end of the track (thank you for the info acroamor), leaving two lovely (and slightly more restrained) songs that don't really have much of an impact on me. Of these, I prefer White Denim's warm and inviting folk to Games' sweet synth-pop :music-listening:

The Hendrix Huddle
56) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
25) Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
45) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
55) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île
My reaction to the Satie piece was not as strong as some of those you guys have described, but there is no way a piece this hauntingly beautiful wouldn't top my list. Roy Harper's song is also beautiful in its own way, more due to the anger and sadness he clearly puts on display. Nino's composition is quite lovely as well, but the emotion doesn't transfer as readily as the top two, while Henri Salvador just feels way out of his league.

Just a quick note on "Longtime Sunshine" - the version linked to here isn't the actual version on the Alone album, it's an expanded version with a bootlegged ending tacked on. The song proper ends at 3:06 of the YouTube link given, the ending coda with the accordion is something the video uploader added themselves. Just something to take into consideration when you're voting.

whuntwa, I suggest that you replace the Satie video with this one, the most famous and best (IMO) version played by Pascal Rogé. Daniel Varsano's version is wonderful as well, and quite similar, but there's still a difference.

For the record, nicolas nominated the song without mentioning a specific performer.

Paul McCartney Group:
1) Games - Strawberry Skies
2) Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine
3) Passion Pit - Carried Away
4) White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward

I was not as impressed with this group as I was with the following one, but all these songs, at the least, had great moments. Games' oddball pop wins out over Rivers Cuomo's solid songwriting and compelling back story -- the song was included on an unreleased Weezer album that was ultimately replaced with Pinkerton.

Jimi Hendrix Group
1) Roy Harper - I Hate the White Man
2) Erik Satie - Gymnopedie 1
3) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
4) Henri Salvador - Dans mon ile

This was a tough one. Roy Harper, Erik Satie, and Nino Rota are favorites of mines and these are all compelling choices from them. The only one I hadn't heard though from those guys is Roy Harper's. Familiarity breeds, if not contempt, certainly a lack of enthusiasm, even if they are all great songs. If anyone likes Nino Rota's work, I recommend watching "Amarcord," a great movie with a great score by him.

12) Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine
52) Games-Strawberry Skies
27) White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward
42) Passion Pit - Carried Away

I always find Rivers Cuomo songs appealing at first, sometimes they don't stand the test of time, but this is new to me and sounds good after a few listens. Funny thing; I tend to like retro-80s synth-pop better than 80s synth-pop. I like the White Denim song too, but I would prefer it slowed down a little with a more restrained accompaniment - Jon Allen style. The Passion Pit song is too much on the beat for me - if that makes any sense.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
25) Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
55) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île
45) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
56) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1

I've liked 'Dans mon ile' since I first heard it, I'm surprised it qualifies for this game. The video does it more harm than good. The Nino Rota is good too, third in a very tough group. I've never connected with Satie's Gymnopédie's, although I seem to hear this one quite often so it is clearly much appreciated by others.

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP:

Passion Pit - Carried Away
Games - Strawberry Skies
Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine
White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward

"Carried Away" has gotten a lot of play over the past couple of years from me, I have liked everything I have heard from Passion Pit. "Strawberry Skies" is the 1st great discovery, I felt like it could have been something I was watching on 'Friday Night Videos' when I was about 13 years old in between a Bananarama and a Duran Duran video. "Longtime Sunshine" was a good song but if it would have been included on Pinkerton might have been the weakest track on an amazing album.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP

Erik Satie - Gymnopedie 1
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
Henri Salvador - Dans Mon Ile
Roy Harper - I Hate The White Man

Nothing impressive about this group. I liked all 4 from the McCartney group better than any of these.

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
42) Passion Pit - Carried Away
27) White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward

These two songs exemplify what I like in modern indie music, taking a multitude of influences and putting them together in interesting ways. The Passion Pit song wins only because the White Denim drags a little towards the end.

12) Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine

I'm a big fan of Cuomo's output in Blue Album and Pinkerton, but this song doesn't do much for me.

52) Games-Strawberry Skies

The disparate elements here don't work together for me. Like some strange lovechild of Madonna and Portishead, two artists about whom I am less enthusiastic than most critics.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
25) Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man

My favorite discovery of this game so far. Harper sounds like the result of a happy Dylan/Lennon marriage.

56) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1

Hauntingly beautiful.

45) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia

Delightfully distressing.

55) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île

Smooth, soothing and boring.

P.S.
For those of you who are wondering who the heck I am, I'm a regular AM visitor and have been a lurker on these boards since 2009, only occasionally participating in games like this that require little listening preparation (Bracketology, EOY Songs, etc.). I'm still working towards having a big enough body of favorites to participate in the All Time and Decade polls, which has been my goal since I first stumbled upon this wonderful site, but I promise to be more active on these forums in the near future.

The Jimi Hendrix group is just superb. The song I placed last on the second group would be first for me on the first group. But that's just my opinion.

Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine
White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward
Passion Pit - Carried Away
Games - Strawberry Skies

Erik Satie – Gymnopédie nº 1
Henri Salvador - Dans mon île
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
Roy Harper - I Hate the White Man

And I cannot share the criticism to "Dans mon île," the song is fantastic. But I agree with the comment of DaveC about the way "the video does it more harm than good." Why not going to the fantastic homemade video made by nicolas? Much better sound quality with only pictures of Salvador.

White Demin's track was the clear standout in this group for me. In particular, I liked the instrumentation - textural instrumentation - busy, but effective. The others were all kind of close - Passion Pit got the edge after several listens for being the most catchy. Not quite as fond of the Cuomo and Games tracks

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
56) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
25) Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
45) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
55) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île

Overall, this group blew the other one away, in my opinion. Satie is the rather obvious pick from me... almost feels like cheating, to be truthful. Loved the Roy Harper song after a single listen, barely edging out the also-excellent Rota and Salvador tracks. Great stuff guys!

If voting is still allowed here are my rankings.

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine
Games-Strawberry Skies
White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward
Passion Pit - Carried Away

Really hard to rank these songs. Everything was good without really clicking for me.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
Henri Salvador - Dans mon île
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia

"I Hate the White Man" was a great surprise. I almost put it ahead of "Dans mon île". Too bad Nicolas' video wasn't posted from the beginning. It makes the song so much better.

nicolas and whuntva, don't take this as crtiticism, but to me classical music feels a bit like cheating, at least without naming a performer. There are at least a dozen classical pieces that should win a landslide victory IMO. But if you cheat, you better do it well, and "Gymnopédie 1" is the best piece of music I have ever heard. :P

Yes, I'm having trouble deciding between the 1812 Overture or Flight of the Valkyries for our next contest! (hmmm... or perhaps Also Sprach Zarathustra?) In all seriousness, one of you classical scholars should take this and run a separate contest for solely "classical" music. I bet there'd be great interest, based on some of the threads we've seen in the past...

A very solid top 5, but Satie and Henri Salvador play in another division this week.

5) Passion Pit - Carried Away
6) Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine
8) Games-Strawberry Skies

I had the same reaction as Henrik: this is all good, but nothing made a real connection with me. White Denim works the best because of it's wild energy. Carried Away is a fine pop song, but doesn't stand out in any remarkable way. Rivers Cuomo has a similar problem. Good lyrics, but the music is maybe a little too typical for indie music. Games is the loser of the week for me, because even after listening to it a few times this week I still can't recall it.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
1) Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
2) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
3) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
7) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île

This on the other hand is a great group. Admittedly, Henry Salvador should just be happy being here, because to my ears he's severely outmatched. Roy Harper's song is pretty much tailor-made for my tastes in every way, so he wins easily. Rota and Satie have both haunting pieces of music, one in lush way, the other minimalist, but each others equals, with Rota just edging out Satie for no particular reason.

Maybe we can shorten the length of the next round? 14 out of the 26 responses so far (approximately 54%) came in on the first day. A week or even shorter should be sufficient to get an adequate number of responses, no?

That's what I was thinking. The only reason I even opened the poll when I did was because I had a big thing at work last weekend. I opened it earlier than intended. I wanted it to run weekly Sunday-Sunday.

Of course, if you like, I could even call it now, and we can start the new round in an hour or so. How's that?

I wouldn't want to stop people who wanted to submit their votes at a later date expecting the contest to be open until Sunday. On the other hand, I would like to see the next groups. :)

OK. I shall keep the poll running as scheduled and start a weekly schedule Sunday, but quick question. When is forum time? One my laptop it's UTC-5 (Central Daylight Savings), but mobile is UTC. Which time should I use?

So happy to see this up and running!

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP

Games - Strawberry Skies: 8
Passion Pit - Carried Away: 6.5
Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine: 5
White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward: 4

It should come as no surprise that the synthiest song of the bunch is my clear favorite. I was pleasantly surprised by the Passion Pit song, too, because my wife bought their album from 2009 or so and the singing drove me bonkers! The other 2 songs don't do anything for me. Sorry!

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP

Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1: 9
Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia: 7.5
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man: 7
Henri Salvador - Dans mon île: 5

I was really drawn to the mystery of the Nino Rota track, and Roy Harper was a great surprise as well, as I'm not usually big on singer-songwriter protest songs, but I found myself moved by it. But my goodness, "Gymnopédie 1" is a real treat, isn't it?!

UTC -5 should be your local time on the east coast (as long as you corrected for Daylight Savings Time). 7 p.m. your local time Sunday is midnight UTC.

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
27) White Denim - Some Wild Going Outward
42) Passion Pit - Carried Away
12) Rivers Cuomo - Longtime Sunshine
52) Games - Strawberry Skies

The White Denim song was terrific; I love the drums. Carried Away is nice and bouncy (very catchy), and Longtime Sunshine is good but not as emotionally arresting as some other Weezer songs, I feel. Strawberry Skies is trying a little hard to be dark for my tastes.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
56) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
55) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île
25) Roy Harper - I Hate the White Man
45) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia

Gymnopédie 1 is lovely, and fairly easy to play (incidentally, the tempo mark for this piece is 'Lent et douloureux', meaning slow and painful). It just kind of makes time slow down a bit, which is always a welcome trait. Dans mon île is beautiful! It's clear to see the influence it had on bossa nova music as well. Roy Harper has such a powerful voice, befitting the message of his song. The Nino Rota track is evocative but not something I'd want to listen to every day.

"Gymnopédie 1" is the background music for that recording in which Julio Cortázar reads the seventh chapter of Hopscotch (Rayuela). I must confess that maybe my vote was influenced by that; but heck, it's a good chapter.

PAUL MCCARTNEY GROUP
1) Passion Pit - Carried Away
2) White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward
3) Games-Strawberry Skies
5) Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine

Passion Pit had an unfair advantage coming into this game as I had loved "Carried Away" for quite some time now. The White Denim song, however, was right up my alley. "Strawberry Skies" isn't the kind of song I usually enjoy much, but it somehow worked well. As for the last song, I've never been a big fan of Rivers Cuomo aside from The Blue Album and a few tracks on Pinkerton. I can't take him seriously.

JIMI HENDRIX GROUP
4) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
6) Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man
7) Nino Rota - O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia
8) Henri Salvador - Dans mon île

"Gymnopédie 1" was beautiful and takes this bracket pretty easily. "I Hate the White Man" was quite good, though folk message music doesn't typically excite me much. "O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia" had some nice moments but that's it. And "Dans mon île" just isn't my style.

And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror

Poll is Closed!

If there is a mistake, please let me know. I'm sure I miscounted somewhere.

Votes listed (total points, #1 votes)

PAUL MCCARTNEY
Passion Pit-Carried Away (81, 12)
Rivers Cuomo-Longtime Sunshine (74, 7)
---
White Denim-Some Wild Going Outward (73, 6)
Games-Strawberry Skies (66, 5)

This was close from Start to Finish! Cuomo and Passion Pit were neck and neck heading into Thursday, but the last few votes swung the game in PP's favor. Despite a late surge by White Denim, Cuomo held on to advance.

JIMI HENDRIX
Erik Satie-Gymnopedie 1 (101, 17)
Roy Harper-I Hate the White Man (81, 8)
---
Nino Rota- O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia (65, 3)
Henri Salvador-Dans Mon ile (55, 2)

Remember, I've seen what all the groups look like, even the ones currently unseen. Hendrix was one of the better ones. But this was a true blowout if there ever was one. Satie took an early lead and never looked back, gaining the most votes and the largest margin of victory this week. Roy Harper was no slouch either, picking up the second-most in both groupings. Poor Henri Salvador was outclassed here, picking up the fewest total votes and the fewest first-place votes.

Next set is up shortly. The winner of the McCartney group faces the runner-up of one of the new groups this week, and vice-versa.
