Unacclaimed 2.0 Nomination Thread

Post by whuntva »

Alright, if everyone's okay, I can start the nomination process now!

Most people seem partial to the World Cup idea, so that's the format we go with. A group stage followed by the top two advancing to single-elimination.

Number of songs depends on turnout. I want to get it up to at least 32 but no more than 64. I'll leave the nominating period open all month and see how fast we get to that number.
One nomination per person...with one "unless". If there's still time left over and we have a little bit more or less than 32 songs, you are allowed to nominate another.

Edit: As of 4 August, we have hit 32 songs. Anyone previously nominating is allowed one more song. Tournament begins when we hit 64.

Edit: 64 songs reached. The nominating period is over. Voting starts Thursday!
There are only two rules. No songs listed on AM or from Albums listed on AM, INCLUDING bubbling under. If you're not sure, check the "artist" or "song" tabs on the main page.

Also, this should be implied, but to make it super-duper fair, nothing too new for the last update. In other words, nothing from the past 365 days.

Alright, now that that's clear, we can begin!

Nominees

I'd like to nominate Watermelon in Easter Hay by Frank Zappa. I saw that Joe's Garage Act 1 is bubbling under but this particular track is off Acts 2 & 3, and frankly one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard. Great main riff as well.

OK, I shall nominate one myself now.

The National-Exile Vilify was pretty much the song that inspired the whole tournament!

And Ron, I checked Doncamatic, and since it was only on a reissue of Plastic Beach, it counts!

Same with "Talk Show Host", released only on a collector's edition of The Bends

You're gonna have to back this up.

It's from Lodger, which is listed on AM.

Unless it's from a re-release, it doesn't count.

I want to increase the intensity a bit. This was the B-Side to "Creeping Death" and originally issued on 'Garage Inc' and then on a re-issue of 'Kill 'Em All' so it should be eligible.

There are so many that I wish were included on AM: Part Time Punks (Television Personalities), Tally Ho (The Clean), Last Kind Word Blues (Geeshie Wiley). However, I nominate Kyrie by Edu Lobo, a manically delightful song from an undeservedly obscure artist.

Bruce, I forgive you for your Bing . . . uh, binge in the other thread. The J.B.'s are great!

I've never heard the Jurgen Koppers mix that was in the original link you posted, although the credits for the version I'm after do list him as the mixer, so it may have been ok! Will have to listen. :)

It's my favorite JB record, and my favorite record of the last 50 years. And it was not featured in the movie (Get On Up) that we just saw tonight. Very good movie, but it's more about him as a person than about the music.

Here's what my girlfriend wrote about the movie in another forum:

It was a very impressionistic movie, jumped around different periods of his life, very haunting scenes of his childhood but no idea how much truth there is to them. Reminded me of those "foreign films" I used to go see when I was a teenager...you expect the 40-year-old Brown to step out of a limo but it's the little boy in coveralls instead, that sort of thing.

As for the music, all the way home we kept naming JB hits and other favorites of ours that weren't in the movie. I mean *all* the way home, that's how many significant omissions there were. Those of you who don't care for his 70s material, don't worry...."Get On The Good Foot" and "Funky President" and "Papa Don't Take No Mess" and "Hot Pants" and "Talkin' Loud And Saying Nothing" and "Doin' It To Death" are not in the movie either. Bruce claims to have heard "The Payback" playing in the background but I didn't.

The acting was very good. Chadwick Boseman looked, moved, and sounded (talking) a great deal like JB and his lip-synching was perfect.

If you were a JB fan the movie is well worth seeing...it will make you want to go home and listen to all the real JB music you've got.

OK, so among the 20 or so eligible songs in my top 200 of all time, I only see 3 standing a little chance. So my runners-up are Ben Harper - Forgiven and Devo - Huboon Stomp but my pick is :

I have 3 I could take from my top 10 and I chose:
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper - Bird Balloons

My favorite song of last year (and since it was released in february 2013 it qualifies). A very weird song, with vocals that unashamedly go everywhere, whether singer Aly Spaltro can reach it or not. I love how the song in 6 minutes changes mood a few times, but somehow manages to make sense as a whole. It's the turmoil of emotions that follow a break-up on which Bob Dylan or Adele have based a complete album, mixed in to one single song. It opens and ends in an explosion of guitars signalling anger and confusing and somehow manages to get to a resigned melancholy right in the middle. The instrumentation, the colorful and weird lyrics and vocal touches like the sudden short screams and the fake laugh at the end all fall into place somehow. What I like the most however, is how fearless it is. For some reason it's one of those songs that I imagine you would be almost ashamed of of performing it for an audience, because of the range of emotions and the strange raw quality of the singing. Would love to see this live once.
I also admit that I can fully understand if this is an acquired taste and won't get too far.

Roy Harper - I Hate The White Man

This notorious song springs from the same observations about human behaviour as “With God On Our Side”. But while Dylan’s song is cerebral and distanced by his taking the moral high ground, Harpers response is down in the fray where reason submits to emotion: Confused, angry, and riddled with existential uncertainty. Sure, the lyric can be critically shredded, but John Lennon demonstrated in his life that he didn’t believe in ‘no possessions’ and John Lydon really didn’t want anarchy. Harper doesn’t really hate the white man, but this song viscerally communicates the anguish of observing man’s inhumanity to man and not wanting any part of it while not allowing oneself the luxury of pretending to be entirely above it all.

What is the stance on songs nominated in Unacclaimed 1.0? I believe one of mine (Curtis Mayfield's "Right on for the Darkness") made the finals, though I don't think the winner was ever resolved. (It was against Nina Simone's "Sinnerman", so I would have been fine with either winner, as those are 2 of the greatest songs ever recorded.)

If we can re-nominate, I'd like to add Lou Christie's orchestral pop classic "Paint America Love":

http://youtu.be/nzPY6denjHc

If not, I'd like to nominate the massive epic "Stella", by Kashiwa Daisuke. It's a combination of modern classical minimalism with electronic glitch, but is much more accessible than all of that sounds. Give it a little time to sink in, because it was a life-changer for me:

It's in my personal Top 100. I actually knew this song before Gotye was popular. And I'm US!

Thank you, sir!

And sonofsamiam, Nothing from 1.0 is eligible. Just all new songs here. I will count the second song you listed.

It's practically unfair to choose this as your song, it's too perfect. I'm honestly astounded it's not listed anywhere on this site, it's brought me to full-bodied tears before.

Also, I must say, I've honestly enjoyed listening to the songs I've been introduced to in this thread more than I have any other source for a long, long time. Some really breathtaking pieces all around.

Any date for this final yet? :D

Is list available somewhere?

Anyway, my nomination is Weeping Willows - Blue and Alone

It was assumed "Sinnerman" won because it got more votes in the all-time poll and just recently made the AM Top 6000.

As a matter of fact, it is: http://pub37.bravenet.com/forum/static/ ... 0&cmd=show

Also, your vote was #32. This means anyone who previously nominated a song is allowed one more.

But to Jirin
21) Anais Mitchell-Why We Build the Wall (needs confirmation from Jirin)
When I say I need confirmation, I need you to tell me this is the song you want or provide a link to the song you actually wanted. The title you gave was shorter than the one I could find.

Thanks for the turnout! We're doing great!
