"Metamorphosis" is not a compilation. Only three songs were previously released ("Out of Time," "Heart of Stone" and "Memo From Turner") in different versions. It's one of the very first (officially released) albums made up of outtakes and demos, just like "The Basement Tapes" released the same year.

Also surprised and frankly disappointed that The Basement Tapes and Mothership Connection missed the boat here, though on the other hand it's a nice surprise to get something like the Ahmed album in. Never heard of him or his album.

No, it was supposed to be a funny remark but without the benefit of hearing the way it was said I guess you can take it wrong.

Agreed. On top of this, I think there is another larger problem which is that these songs lists gravitate towards more popular artists.

Basically, the songs lists are waaaaay more varied. With 40 voters we had 260 unique songs all getting voted for. Compare this to the albums, where 39 voters voted for only 142 unique albums. This essentially means that it takes far less for any one song out of 260 to reach the higher reaches of the final tally - indeed 2 #1 votes would get you into the top 15. Both Kraftwerk and Eno got only 3 votes to get to their 100 points, while there were some songs that got loads of "middling" votes that essentially count for nothing:

Parliament - Give Up The Funk - 7 votes
Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug - 8 votes
10cc - I'm not in Love - 8 votes
David Bowie - Young Americans - 7 votes

Now I wouldn't want a points system that allowed for average songs by very popular artists (like Young Americans) that everyone will have heard to get into our top 15, but at the same time, it would be nice to be recognise that in a world where songs are merely 4 minutes long and albums 40, getting into a top 15 songs list is much more impressive than getting into a top 15 albums list.

I have not given much thought to the formula used before, but after reading Zorg's post, I do wonder if it makes sense to use the same formula for albums and songs. Each of us knows far more songs than albums (and for album lovers keep in mind for each album you add to your musical memory bank, you add a dozen or so songs). As such, it takes more to be the #15 song of the year on an individual's list than to be his/her #15 favorite album.

The current system ensures that any vote outside of the top 5 will barely move the needle. What if we used, in the future (should not switch horses in midstream) a system that awarded 75 points for a number one vote and then made each successive vote worth five points less (#2 is 70 points, #3 is 65, #15 is 5). Such a system would make the #1 song on a given list worth five times as much as the #15 song instead of fifty times (which seems to me a bit skewed to me).

Yes, the point system is bad. Instead of this:

1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

I'd go with this:

1-35
2-28
3-26
4-24
5-22
6-20
7-19
8-18
9-17
10-16
11-15
12-14
12-13
14-12
15-11

There are thousands of songs in every year. Making the top 15 is very difficult. #15 should be rewarded with much more than just 10% of what making #6 gets.

Add me to the list of users who think the scoring system is absurd. Perhaps the best case in point is what happened with Brian Eno. Golden Hours made the final list despite being only the third most popular song he had that year. The Big Ship had more votes, but didn't even make the top 50.

I know that, personally, when it comes to determining what to rank at #3 or #4, for example, it's pretty much an eenie-meenie-minie-mo thing. What I choose to rank higher today could just as well be ranked a notch lower tomorrow or yesterday. The main thing is that I think the song is worthy of recognition. It's ridiculous to award that decision - #3 or #4 - the same point value as what the song would receive from an additional five (out of just 40) participants selecting it for their lists. Put another way, as it currently stands, if I give song A my #1 ranking, that's worth more than 8 other people naming song B as one of the year's ten best.

And it goes for albums, too, although I'll admit it's less of a concern there. I don't typically love fifteen albums a year. Sometimes, 15 is more than half of the albums I've even heard. But it is common for me to absolutely love 15 songs (or more) from a given year. I think Born To Run is the greatest rock song of all time. But five of the other 14 on my list were on the mix we played at our wedding - one of them was the song that played as my wife walked down the aisle. I love those songs. To me, they're pretty much perfect, and the difference between how much I appreciate one versus another is either microscopic, ever-changing, or altogether nonexistent.

I imagine these issues have been discussed before, but still....it's ridiculous.

And, in case you were wondering, no, the music played a few minutes before we exchanged our vows did NOT concern a black-masked clown doing a fandango (nor did it resemble an orgasm played over a proto-techno beat).

I like that a song/album especially admired by a few people can make the cut. I keeps the poll interesting and sometimes throws up really interesting musical choices. If Roxy Music/10cc/David Bowie were promoted into the top 15 we would be virtually duplicating the AM top 15 for 1975. That would get kind of boring. The 1980's decade poll included a number of unexpected and worthwhile songs (Hilly Fields, Struggle for Pleasure,...). I wouldn't like to see those folk who post really interesting and original lists decide that it isn't worth bothering because the result is always generic.

Also, I can't speak for others, but I often do feel that some songs/albums do particularly stand out in a given year. Of course my weightings wouldn't be the same from year to year, nor would they match the points system. However, overall, I'm happy with the results we get.

The object of forming the point system is to be fair and equitable, it's NOT to try and avoid boredom.

I agree for the top 100... like always when we make these lists, the most performing song and albums are not the most interesting part of the game (in general, we know them by heart). Found some gems after the top 20 it what I like the most.

The interest of this game is , for me :
17 | Mahmoud Ahmed | Erè Mèla Mèla | 97
Not :
1 | Bruce Springsteen | Born to Run | 713

Whatever, thank you Zorg for the results.

I'm at work at the moment, but ill post the top 100 of both lists when I get home. Though beware, everything gets bogged down in ties (especially in the songs list).

You know how in athletics heats they have fastest losers? I.e. those that didn't win their race, but were the fastest of those that lost. We could do something similar here - "most popular non-points-getters". Lets say the top 12 get in by right, and then the three songs of those that remain that got the most votes (10cc, roxy etc) go through as fastest losers. Keeps the individual lists top heavy but makes sure that your #15 choice is still relevant. Anyway, this is a discussion for another time, as I do not propose that we change the rules halfway through the poll.

Bruce, why do you always need to comment on the ethnicity of artists that end up on our lists? The ethnicity has nothing to do with anybody's appreciation of music, except insofar that it correlates with genre, so any race biases you observe are really just genre preferences.

And anyway if you want more nonwhite artists on the next year's list help me vote up Zombie and Africa Brasil. :)

Personally I'm in favor of scoring systems that slant down quickly. When I'm looking at the Best of 2014 thread for recommendations, I'm not looking at all of your 14th or 26th favorite album of the year, I'm looking at your favorite album of the year. And I think eclectic songs that a few people absolutely love deserve to be on the list more than songs that a lot of people just think are pretty good.
