I guess the album chart could give you some idea of the forum's opinion but on my side :

Lot of my favorite songs are album openers this year for some reason :
Swans - Screen Shot
EMA - Satellites
Four Tet - Can't Do Without You
Afghan Whigs - Parked Outside

Best closer :
Cloud Nothings - I'm Not Part of Me

Best cover :
Todd Terje - Johnny & Mary

Best track to dance to :
Tood Terje - Delorean Dynamite

Best pop song :
Ariana Grande (feat Iggy Azaela) - Problem (which would actually be better without the featuring)

Best "classic" indie-rock song :
Posse - Shut Up

Best song by a rapper :
Vic Mensa - Down on my Luck (not sure this qualifies as a rap song, sounds more like a dance track)

Best Riot grrrrls :
White Lung - Face Down

Hidden electronic gems of the year :
Holly Herndon - Chorus
Millie & Andrea - Corrosive
Percussions (one of the monikers of Kieran Habden aka Four Tet) - ASCII Bot
Among those, I guess Johnny and Mary is the more likely candidate for ranking high on the final AM list.
I'd bet on a top 30 slot for I'm Not Part of Me too.
Not too sure which song already released this year is shoe-in for EOY lists... I guess Digital Witness will end up the highest of this first half of the year.

A rough list of my top ten:
1. Sun Kil Moon - Ben's My Friend
2. Sun Kil Moon - Dogs
3. Moderat - Last Time (I think this is 2014)
4. Beck - Blue Moon
5. Sun Kil Moon - Carissa
6. Damon Albarn - Heavy Seas of Love
7. Wild Beasts - Wanderlust
8. Wild Beasts - Sweet Spot
9. Damon Albarn - Lonely Press Play
10. East India Youth - Looking for Someone

As far as what may make AM's final list, I have no idea. Perhaps something by Beck or St. Vincent. I'd like to think Sun Kil Moon could have some high placing songs but the individual songs will probably get overlooked in favor of the album as a whole.

Guys, I need some new 2014 songs. I haven't been able to pay attention to music at all this year.

From what I've heard I like the following:
Aphex Twin - minipops
Peaking Lights - Breakdown
Actress - Gaze
Swans - obviously the entire album, but Oxygen and A Little God in My Hands are standouts
Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues
Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite
MJ / JT - Love Never Felt So Good

TVotR's new single is alright, have better hopes for the album though.

Wow! I never realized how many songs I like this year were high-profile re-releases.

Songs by Vance Joy, KONGOS, and Asgeir would all be eligible for a 2014 poll based on the criteria regarding re-releases, and are all technically 2014 songs!

I have tried to narrow it down to a Top 20:

1) Swans-A Little God in My Hands
2) KONGOS-Come with me Now
3) Vance Joy-Riptide
4) Asgeir-King and Cross
5) Warpaint-Love is to Die
6) Sun kil Moon-Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes
7) First Aid Kit-My Silver Lining
8) Band of Skulls-Asleep at the Wheel
9) Sia-Chandelier
10) My Glorious-James Dean
11) KONGOS-I'm Only Joking
12) Black Keys-Fever
13) Elbow-New York Morning
14) Tune-Yards-Water Fountain
15) alt-J-Left Hand Free (funny story, I HATED "Breezeblocks" but mostly like the new album)
16) Vance Joy-Mess is Mine
17) War on Drugs-Under the Pressure
18) John Butler Trio-Blame it on Me
19) Broods-Bridges
20) Silversun Pickups-Cannibal

Swans probably sweep the year. They are the artist of the year with its best album and song!

That's 2013 (already ranked in AM by the way), you might have meant Hard which was also pretty awesome this year.

I specifically tried to avoid this. But I still don't know the policy on re-releases. KONGOS, Vance Joy, Asgeir all were actually from past years but got high profile re-releases within 2014.

Therefore, I think they count as 2014 songs.

Is this the policy here on the forum?

The forum policy is a bit strange.

When it comes to adding songs to AM, then the first official release is the release date, no matter how low-profile the release was.

When it comes to our user polls, however, there's a little leniency allowed. You can get away with adding a 2013 song to a 2014 list for a user poll, so long as the 2013 song was a low-profile release during 2013. So that means you can't vote for "Get Lucky" in this year's songs of 2014 poll, but feel free to vote for anything low-profile that came out last year.
