I almost feel like I'm cheating with two live albums in my list, but back in 1974, those two albums never left the stack by the turntable. And thank you, AM, for making me revisit 1974, perhaps the weakest year of the decade, so I could relisten to the country pop perfection of "Heart Like a Wheel", which was a little too country for me back then, but now I can see it as the classic interpreters' album that it is; great song selection, some of the greatest musicians of the day at the top of their game and excellent production. I was literally shocked to not put "Court and Spark" atop this list.

Edit: Twice I listed my usual 75 songs, and twice I found myself logged out of AM when I submitted, so the third time I played it safe. Usually I compose my list off line and copy it in, but my new computer has no native word-processing program!
Has anyone else experienced an unexpected logout?

I definitely need to vote this month. I know most people don't love 1974 but it's one of my favorite years at the top....between Red, Rock Bottom, and the ridiculously underrated Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), the year owns three of my top 15 albums of all time.

Jolene was released as a single in 1973 an it made the cut at #9 in our 1973 poll. So you may wish to provide a replacement to fill out your top 15 songs of 1974.

(NB a #4 vote would have pushed it up to #19 in the 1973 poll.)

I have not been quoting it every time, but one of the rules is:-

3- Only lists with at least 5 songs/albums will be counted.

4 DON'T YOU WORRY 'BOUT A THING, Stevie Wonder
Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing was released on Innervisions in 1973. Sadly it missed the cut in our 1973 poll coming in at #25. So you may wish to provide a replacement to fill out your top 15 songs of 1974.

(NB a #4 vote would have pushed it up to #19 in the 1973 poll.)
Thanks, I just fixed my list.

Hymie, I'm sorry that there was some suspicion at the beginning that you and Bruce were the same person. This was a definitive proof against it! :D

1974 is a far better year than many think, you just need to dig deep. My theory is that a lot of the "canon" artists either did not release something that year, or had poor output. It also falls between what many critics consider golden eras. But exit your comfort zone, and there is so much to discover and love.

Songs

What would be my #1 for 1974 actually premiered that year, but was not officially release on a record until later. It's the mind-bending first movement of Alfred Schnittke's 1st Symphony ... you could call it place 0 on this list. I've also asterisked several other pieces that were premiered in '74 by modern classical artists, but only released in recorded form late enough to not really be considered contemporaneous.

Can't say I like 74-76, but here we go :

Albums :
1) Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountains (By Strategy)
2) Queen - Queen II
3) Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
4) Big Star - Radio City
5) Roxy Music - Country Life
6) Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
7) Neil Young - On The Beach
8) Kraftwerk - Autobahn
9) Fela Kuti - Confusion

Les Inrocks put Sheer Heart Attack in their list of "great albums by bad bands" a few years ago, but for me it is their only misstep of the 70s (Jazz is not that great but I like it)
The first half of Diamond Dogs is very good but the 2nd is a big letdown, I didn't enjoy Natty Dread like I enjoyed Catch a Fire.
I don't like Autobahn as much as the following 4 Kraftwerk albums (which are all fantastic) but it is for sure ground-breaking.
I hear the qualities of Steely Dan, Robert Wyatt and Joni Mitchell but they are not my cup of tea.

Songs :
1) Brian Eno - Third Uncle
2) Sly and the Family Stone - Loose Booty
3) Big Star - I'm In Love With a Girl
4) Queen - March of the Black Queen
5) Supertramp - Dreamer
6) Kiss - Black Diamond
7) David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
8) Queen - The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke
9) Brian Eno - Baby's On Fire
10) Roxy Music - The Thrill of It All
11) David Bowie - Rebel Rebel
12) Queen - The Seven Seas of Rhye
13) Robert Wyatt - Sea Song
14) Carl Douglas - Kung-Fu Fighting
15) Bob Marley & the Wailers - So Jah Seh

Best song sampled by Kanye West : Joe Farrell - Upon This Rock (used for the awesome drum beat of Gone)

This was released on "The Three Degrees" album in 1973. So you may wish to provide a replacement to fill out your top 15 songs of 1974.

I have this down as a 1975 release, but I see that it is flagged as 1974 on AM. So no problem, but other folks might vote for it in '75.

NB I see that Nicolas has it at #12 on his 1975 list.
