My bad. I've got the live track in my collection dated October 30, 1973, but it's first release was 1974 (Second Helping). My list will be fixed.

Fine year, that 1973, especially for songs. Albums were tough...only the Top 5 would make my all-time 200 (though Innervisions is #2 all-time), but then there are a ton following those that are all very very good and clumped together.

Songs is another story. 54 of those are in my top 1000, and the Top 4 are in my all-time Top 30.

Yet another deep year with lots of great soul music, free jazz, krautrock, avant garde bizarreness, MPB, and a bit of good ol' classic rock for taste.

It also continues to support my theory that every odd-numbered year in the 70s was better than the even-numbered year that preceded it. (Though 72-73 are probably the closest in quality of these examples. 78-79 is close too.) Anyone else agree?

Is Here Come the Warm Jets 1973 or 1974 release? I see it's listed as 1973 on AM, but a couple other sources have it as a January 1974 release and it's been off most lists so far (would have assumed sonofsamiam and Mindrocker, etc. would have included it).

Hi jackson, I think Here Come The Warm Jets is a 1974 release and surely will include it in next month's list. It's a borderline case though. Allmusic, RYM and Wikipedia file it under '74 while Discogs considers it '73 (although that is apparantly based upon a cassette tape release which seems rather vague). I have in fact the original Island release of the record (albeit a dutch pressing) which is copyrighted 1973. However, when an album is copyrighted it's not always exactly the same moment as when it arrives in the stores.
Does anyone remember for which year the Eno album was eligible during the last 70s poll?

We have said that uncertainty would be settled by taking RYM as definitive. I think we should stick with that to avoid extended disagreements. Also I was ignoring Here Come The Warm Jets in my 1973 list as has Mindrocker and I expect others also, so votes for Brian Eno in 1973 would be disadvantaged.

Michel & Jirin, sorry to be troublesome, but would you mind adding replacements for Here Come The Warm Jets & Needles In The Camel's Eye to make up your top 15's?

Yes. Except I rather like 1974 with less acclaimed albums that I like from Focus, Camel, Renaissance, Dadawah, Can & Nico backing up the more widely appreciated works from the likes of King Crimson, Tangerine Dream & Sparks. For one of the dodgy years of the decade, it is really not that bad.

Oh, I agree with that -- I really enjoy every year of the '70s. '74 just isn't quite as deep, though they all go deep.

Since this is an acclaimedmusic.net forum, shouldn't we be using acclaimedmusic.net's years as definitive, using RYM as a fallback for things not listed on AM?

Having to double check every single album against RYM would be a hassle, their lists aren't as clean and easy to index and reference the ones on AM. And the ones I would want to include aren't as close to the top.

Are there any other major albums coming up where AM disagrees with RYM? I just don't want to have to constantly compare my existing lists against RYM album for album to see if there are any more discrepancies. Are there any 1973 albums that aren't listed as 1973 by AM?

I don't know why RYM was chosen as definitive. Quite a few albums & songs that are not listed on AM do receive votes, so we certainly need an authoritative reference outside of AM, but we could use RYM only for albums/songs not on AM. This is the only significant case I know of where AM disagrees with RYM, so I guess this hasn't been discussed before.

Looking back at the history, Here Come The Warm Jets was treated as a 1973 album during the last 70's poll. If we do go that way, then we have to agree that we're changing the eligibility rule. I am reluctant because I think the album will miss out on some votes in this poll unless everyone reads these posts - then I'll have to tell them their votes don't count for 1974. Also some people might not approve of changing the rules in this manner. I welcome further opinions.

Also I'm interested to know if Henrik would consider reclassifying Here Come The Warm Jets as 1974, and if not why not? (Noting also that Brian Eno was entirely absent from Henrik's 1973 albums/songs recommendations lists.)

Here you can find proof for both 1973 and 1974 ;) : https://rateyourmusic.com/admin/corq/?album_id=704

As for not having anything in my 1973 list, I'm a big fan of Eno, but prefer his laid-back side.

Another album that is probably filed under the wrong year at AM is James Brown's "The Payback", which is 1974 at AM, but seems to have been released in the end of 1973.

After some research, I find that Here Come The Warm Jets was released in 1973 in some countries (e.g. it was a 1973 release in New Zealand where I live now), but in 1974 in others (including the US). RYM confuses the issue by having some clear errors (e.g. the 1977 Polydor reissue credited to 1973.) Still, I would like to hear a few more opinions before we make a final decision.

Personally I don't mind Here Come The Warm Jets being included in either year, I just don't want to have to look across two different sources in the future to figure out which year an album is.

Thanks, Miguel. I knew it was a compilation but for some reason I thought that TB Sheets was the only song from 1973 on that album.

So for my songs list, TB Sheets can be removed, and everything below goes up one position, and the new number 15 is the Big Youth track.

Definitely taking "The Payback" as 1973. That is consistent with using RYM as our definitive year selector, and it has appeared on quite a high percentage of lists.

I will happily count your vote for Here Come The Warm Jets in 1973, but I will count votes for it in 1974 too. To not do so wouldn't be fair.

If Here Come the Warm Jets is deemed a 1973 release, please slot it in at #10 on my list and drop the rest one notch apiece.

My songs list will not change, although I'd be tempted to include "Dead Finks Don't Talk" just for the amazing moment when Eno does that dead-perfect Bryan Ferry imitation.

My list:

1. Billy Joel - Piano Man
2. Pink Floyd - The Great Gig in the Sky
3. The Rolling Stones - Angie
4. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
5. Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
6. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
7. String Driven Thing - Heartfeeder
8. Aerosmith - Dream On
9. Bruce Springsteen - Blinded by the Light
10. Spontaneous Combustion - Sabre Dance
11. Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
12. Incredible Bongo Band - Apache
13. Paul Simon - Kodachrome
14. The Wailers - Get Up, Stand Up
15. Lou Reed - Sad Song

Bubbling under:
+ Dolly Parton - Jolene
+ Pink Floyd - Brain Damage
+ Led Zeppelin - No Quarter
+ Lou Reed - Caroline Says II
+ New York Dolls - Personality Crisis
+ Pink Floyd - Money
+ The Wailers - I Shot the Sheriff

The second year in a row in which I didn't vote for the AM #1, but in contrary to Superstition in 1972 I didn't even consider Let's Get It On for my list. In fact both my top 15 and the year top 15 have only four songs in common.

I should also note that my entry for Sad Song is a bit in support for Berlin, which at the moment I would rank as my favorite album of the seventies. However, it's an album I always play in full and never because of specific songs. Sad Song is amazing on it's own, but if I didn't want to honor Berlin in some way I probably would have given Jolene the 15th spot.
