Somehow I don't see "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing" doing well here in the 1965 poll.

Did my list end up being counted?
Jackson, it looks like your list was not counted. From my calculation, "Move on Up" would have been #12 if it had. I don't think Moonbeam's was counted, either.

I know the rules stated 3/1 midnight UTC, but that could result in confusion, as that equates to 6 or 7PM in the US. Either way, I know that the time-bound nature was relaxed in the past, especially for our most loyal posters, like Moonbeam and Jackson. I know that it is at the discretion of the poll administrator.

Either way, I'm pretty unhappy with the songs results, Yoyo and Deep Purple notwithstanding. Just way too much MOR for my tastes, especially "Let It Be", "Moondance", "Your Song", and "Fire and Rain". I skip each of these if I ever bump into them on the radio, and I bump into them often (and I don't listen to much radio).

Besides the shock of Curtis missing, I was very surprised to see nothing from Black Sabbath, CCR (one of the great singles bands of its time), or Lennon as previously mentioned. Yes, I know they likely all suffered from vote-splitting, but still, AM, we need to bring our edge back! :music-rockon:

Here's the results from a 1970 poll I did with 8 people back in about 1980. Each voter rated each song from 0 to 10, so the maximum points a song could get was 80. Ties were broken by the highest individual vote. I like this method better because if people do not like a song at all here it gets penalized. With the method you guys use a record is not penalized if several of the voters hate it.

SONGS
1 - Layla - Derek & Dominos - 74
2 - Yellow River - Christie - 71
3 - Instant Karma - John Lennon - 70
4 - Traveling Band - CCR - 69
5 - It's A Shame - Spinners - 69
6 - All Right Now - Free - 67
7 - Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel - 66
8 - Band of Gold - Freda Payne - 66
9 - Tighter, Tighter - Alive & Kicking - 65
10 - Make It With You - Bread - 65
11 - The Love You Save - Jackson 5 - 65
12 - Have You Ever Seen The Rain - CCR - 64
13 - My Baby Loves Lovin' - White Plains - 64
14 - Love Grows - Edison Lighthouse - 62
15 - The Wonder of You - Elvis Presley - 62
16 - Temptation Eyes - Grass Roots - 62
17 - I Hear You Knocking - Dave Edmunds - 62
18 - Your Song - Elton John - 61
19 - Draggin' The Line - Tommy James - 61
20 - Reflections of My Life - Marmalade
21 - The Long and Winding Road - Beatles - 61
22 - Lola - Kinks - 61
23 - I'll Be There - Jackson 5 - 61
24 - Which way You Going Billy - Poppy Family - 60
25 - Up The Ladder To The Roof - Supremes - 60
26 - My Sweet Lord - George Harrison - 60
27 - Cracklin' Rosie - Neil Diamond - 60
28 - Signed, Sealed and Deliverd, I'm Yours - Stevie Wonder - 60
29 - Turn Back The Hands of Time - Tyrone Davis - 60
30 - Make Me Smile - Chicago - 60
31 - Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin - 60
32 - Baby Hold On - Grass Roots - 59
33 - If I Were Your Woman - Gladys Knight & Pips - 59
34 - Let It Be - Beatles - 59
35 - Joy To The World - Three Dog Night - 59
36 - Hitchin' A Ride - Vanity Fare - 59
37 - Love The One You're With - Stephen Stills - 59
38 - Ain't No Mountain High Emough - Diana Ross - 59
39 - Who'll Stop The Rain - CCR - 59
40 - Lookin' Out My back Door - CCR - 59
41 - Westbound # 0 - Flaming Ember - 58
41 - Lonely Days - Bee Gees - 58
42 - No Matter What - Badfinger - 58
43 - Roadhouse Blues - Doors - 58
44 - Wild World - Cat Stevens - 58
45 - Groovy Situation - Gene Chandler - 58
46 - Up Around The Bend - CCR - 58
47 - In The Summertime - Mungo Jerry - 58
48 - Knock Three Times - Dawn - 57
49 - Kentucky Rain - Elvis Presley - 57
50 - Close To You - Carpenters - 57
51 - Let Your Love Go - Bread - 57
52 - Truckin' - Grateful Dead - 57
53 - I think I Love You - Partridge Family - 57
54 - It Don't Matter To Me - Bread - 57
55 - 25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago - 57
56 - Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You - Wilson Pickett - 57
57 - Still Water (Love) - 4 Tops - 57

As you can see my buddies and I had very different taste than this group has now. We were not very interested in album rock and were much more into top 40 hits. Everybody who voted on my survey was between 12 and 25 years old in 1970. So we all remember these records from when they were current. I think that makes a big difference in our perspective compared to people who were not even alive then voting on the year with hindsight.

Yes, one of the few things I learnt from running a few polls here is that in everybody's mind the deadline is "end of the month" so you always should wait that the month is ended for everyone, not for Europe, before compiling the results !

I apologize to everyone for not including Jackson's and Moonbeam's ballots, I was rushing the list-tallying and probably should have included their votes. I will publish revised Top 15s reflecting these ballots being added tomorrow. Though I will admit that the albums list won't be changed much by them. They are two of our most regular users, and should be included!

Crap! Forgot about it! I apologize profusely for this (month-long delay)! Had a lot happen over the course of this month for me personally, and so it has prevented me from sometimes keeping up with my promises with the poll! Expect it to come either tomorrow or Friday!

Thanks JJ. I can understand how this sort of request can slip past one. No need to apologize. We appreciate the effort it takes to conduct these polls. Keep up the good work and don't worry about when you get to this longer list.

I can provide the extended list; I can prolly post it tomorrow. Just making sure right now by this post that no-one else is in the middle of the calculations at this very moment, or like that someone sent a list with a private message or something. Otherwise, I'm starting the calculations soon.

Edit: I want to be sure that everything's correct so I'll post it on wednesday.

I count And It Stoned Me by Van Morrison as 149 points. Also Rock and Roll has maybe slightly more points than 128, so it might make the cut. This is just so messy. I'm not surprised if Jimmy made a mistake, because I am like 80% sure to make mistakes in my top 50 even though by then I have checked everything like 10 times. It's like an eternal counting hell. So I'm like half finished now, can't do much on Tuesday, will finish on Wednesday.

Edit: Now I know why the mistake maybe. One person put Van - And It Stoned Me. No need for anyone to apologize, it's just this counting world we live in causes bad things.

Edit: Well okay now it might be my mistake again. Wait.

Edit: Yeah I just don't know. Going to bed. Will solve it on Wednesday at latest.

Thanks so much for doing this, Plastic! Let me know if you are having any trouble, though, I will go and re-tally them myself for one last time! I am definitely confused, though... I did make sure to count the Van Morrison song even when it was placed as just "Van". Maybe I just screwed up those calculations... The albums lists, as well as the more recent 1971 Top 15 are definitely correct according to my calculations though...

Ha! No worries Jimmy! Someone posted a list twice. I'm so sorry, my mistake. It was on different pages. You don't even have to check anything. I will personally check the Rock and Roll thing, like I'm 95% sure now that it does not have enough points. 100% sure of And It Stoned Me not making it.

Edit: Like there is an easier way to do this that also makes sure that I don't make those kind of mistakes momentarily, but I'm doing it the hard way and I'll stick to it. Anyway, sorry for the confusion, just no-one count anything on this thread except me.

Edit: Okay now practically 100% sure that Rock and Roll has 128 points. I hope I didn't make you do any re-tallying!

Most of us have favorites just outside the top 15s, which is quite frustrating. I started thinking that maybe we could include everything that got at least (or more than) 100 points. For 1970 and 1971, that would mean 20-25 albums/songs per year.

I know it will be difficult enough to rank 150 items, so please tell me to shut up if this is crazy. :angry-screaming:

Henrik, I will agree to any method chosen and your suggestion is not crazy, but I don't think you will eliminate the frustrations just by changing the method.

It is an illusion to make everybody happy. The poll is boring/predictable, it has too much indie rock, too much Beatles, there is always something wrong ...
If you change to a threshold of 100 points, you will have people complaining that their favourite got 98 or 99 points.

I didn't even realise The Only Living Boy in New York got as many as 10 votes, so seeing it just outside the top 15 is both surprising and frustrating. In hindsight I might even have put it lower down my list - either way, something like Theme de Yoyo was a good enough discovery for me to make up for that slight disappointment.

I know that this poll has long been and gone, but If I may bring your attention to a best of 1970 list that I'm still in the process of creating. It's taken me quite a while - I started in 2nd February! The plan is to go through all the acclaimedmusic top albums and then add in some notable compilations and other bits and pieces that RYM suggests. I would have liked to have participated in the poll, but there was no way that I would have got through all these albums in time. Anyways, tell me what you think? ;)
