1. The National - Trouble Will Find Me

National albums remind me of the Pepsi Challenge Effect. Basically, when you only have a small sample of something, you tend to prefer the one that gives a quick burst of flavor, that's why Pepsi tends to win taste tests against Coke. National albums are never my #1 of the year when I first hear them. But all the ones that place above it tend to gradually lose their shine and they keep getting better.

2. The Knife - Shaking The Habitual

Lost the #1 at the last minute.

3. White Denim - Corsicana Lemonade
4. Roy Harper - Man And Myth

This is a last minute discovery for me. I'd never heard him before but apparently he's a folk legend. This album has beautiful emotional songs about sinfulness and displair.

5. Asaf Avidan - Different Pulses

My Romain discovery of the year.

6. Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer - Child Ballads

7. Stromae - Racine Caree

8. Matthew E White - Big Inner

9. Jenny Hval - Innocence Is Kinky

10. Haim - Days Are Gone

11. Danny Brown - Old

Would be ranked even higher with less misogynistic lyrics.

12. MIA - Matangi

13. These New Puritans - Field OF Reeds

14. Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle

15. Juana Molina - Wed 21

16. Jason Isbell - Southeastern

17. Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic

This one spent the first half of the year as my #1 but didn't hold up as well to repeated listenings.

18. Primal Scream - More Light

Primal Scream releases one great album every ten years. This one's a couple years late.

19. Mountains - Centralia

20. Amor de Dias - The House At Sea

I understand the love for Yeezus even less than MBDTF. At least MBDTF had great production value and a couple great singles. The production on Yeezus is far less slick and it's more all about just provocation for provocation's sake and KW informing all of us how awesome and important he is.

4. Roy Harper - Man And Myth

Great pick. We have most of his best work to look forward to in the 1970s poll. Expecially 1971 classic Stormcock.

BTW you will have heard him on Wish You Were Here singing "Have A Cigar".

Here's my preliminary songs list, though I still plan to change it a lot based on this thread

[01] Daft Punk | Get Lucky (undeniable, probably the best pop song in 10 years--I will think of 2013 whenever I hear this the rest of my life)
[02] My Bloody Valentine | wonder 2
[03] Huerco S | Prinzif (maybe the best leftfield song since Actress' "Maze")
[04] Disclosure ft. AlunaGeorge | White Noise
[05] Arctic Monkeys | R U Mine? (2012 song, but just catching up to it this year. A rock anthem)
[06] Deafheaven | Dream House
[07] Floating Points | Wires (70s free jazz meets modern electronic)
[08] TV On the Radio | Mercy (a welcome return to the "Wolf Like Me" sound)
[09] Thundercat | Oh Shiet, It's X (the best Prince song of 2013)
[10] Sophie | Bipp (certainly wouldn't mind if more IDM were this fun)
[11] Holden | The Caterpillar's Intervention
[12] Charli XCX | SuperLove (hard for me to believe this wasn't a #1 hit)
[13] Primal Scream | 2013 (didn't care for the album, but this is XTRMNTR-quality)
[14] Holden | Renata
[15] Deafheaven | Vertigo (some days it's better than "Dream House")
[16] Jon Hopkins | Open Eye Signal
[17] James Blake | Retrograde
[18] The Range | Metal Swing
[19] Mikal Cronin | Weight (no-nonsense catchy indie guitar pop at its finest)
[20] John Grant | Pale Green Ghosts (eerie Scott Walker-type appeal)
[21] Annie | Invisible
[22] Dean Blunt | Papi (took forever to find a favorite track from this album, but this one sums up the greatness of The Redeemer quite nicely)
[23] Mikal Cronin | Shout It Out
[24] Julia Holter | Maxim's II
[25] Steve Mason | Seen It All Before
[26] Grumbling Fur | The Ballad of Roy Batty
[27] Nils Frahm | Says (if the whole thing was as good as the last two minutes, it would be top-3)
[28] Rustie | Slasherr
[29] Yo La Tengo | Ohm (the best 90s indie song of 2013)
[30] These New Puritans | Fragment Two
[31] Boards of Canada | Reach for the Dead
[32] Jagwar Ma | Come Save Me (Tame Impala-type appeal to these guys)
[33] Sky Ferreira | You're Not the One (shocked this didn't have more acclaim)
[34] My Bloody Valentine | New You
[35] Glasser | Shape (Bjork ripoff, but it's a good Bjork ripoff)
[36] Lady Gaga | Applause (will go down as her most underappreciated hit)
[37] King Midas Sound | Aroo
[38] Thundercat | Heartbreaks + Setbacks
[39] Daft Punk | Doin' It Right (a track this stupid has no right to be this good)
[40] Jon Hopkins | Immunity
[41] Uncle Acid | Poison Apple
[42] Arcade Fire | Reflektor (my favorite post-Funeral AF song)
[43] Baths | Obsidian
[44] Woodkid | I Love You
[45] Primal Scream | It's Alright, It's OK
[46] Eleanor Friedberger | Stare at the Sun
[47] Melt Yourself Down | Fix My Life
[48] Janelle Monae | Q.U.E.E.N. (hugely disappointing album, especially a letdown after this great lead single)
[49] Run the Jewels | A Christmas Fucking Miracle
[50] Queens of the Stone Age | I Appear Missing

Re: 2013 Top Songs / Albums -- Post and discuss your lists!

Post by jamieW »

I’ve said before that what I love most about music is its unpredictability. Entering 2013, I never would’ve dreamed that my favorite album of the year would be a Contemporary Christian album about pain and loss, but it struck an emotional chord with me like no other album this year.

A couple of last minute additions were 65daysofstatic, which I discovered after its high placement in the Moderately Acclaimed game; and Margaret Berger’s incredible “I Feed You My Love,” which I found in Henrik’s songs list. A big “Wow!” for both.

I won't mention the source of the song, as it might detract more people from finding it great...

Anyway - Moonbeam, I definitely think you should check it out.

Yes, you're right. Margaret Berger represented Norway in Eurovision 2013. I think she finished at 2nd place.

My album list :

1) Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap
2) Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
3) La Femme - Psycho Tropical Berlin
4) Deafhaven - Sunbather
5) Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels
6) Chvrches - The Bones Of What You Believe
7) Jon Hopkins - Immunity
8) Fuck Buttons - Slow Focus
9) Kanye West - Yeezus
10) Disclosure - Settle
11) Mutual Benefit - Love's Crushing Diamond
12) Arcade Fire - Reflektor
13) The Knife - Shaking the Habitual
14) 65daysofstatic - White Light
15) Orelsan et Gringe - sont les Casseurs Flowters
16) Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold
17) Lady Lamb the Beekeeper - Ripely Pine
18) Burial - Rival Dealer EP
19) Darkside - Psychic
20)Laura Marling - Once I Was an Eagle

Back 3 months ago I considered La Femme, QOTSA and Deafheaven tied for 1st place, but I have basically spent the last 3 months listening to Acid Rap again and again. "Even better than it was the last time" seems a perfectly fitting description for this album.

Here are in no order my 55 favorite songs of the year (though there are about 5 that I forgot to keep track of and now don't remember the name and have time to look for right away in their respective albums), with links to some of the lesser known ones that I think deserve some minutes in the spotlight.

65daysofstatic - Prisms
Arcade Fire - Reflektor
Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?
Big Sean - Control (feat Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica) Kendrick destroyed everything in the most talked about verse of the year, but it is also surrounded by one of the best beat of the year and 2 pretty good rappers contributions
Chance the Rapper - Chain Smoker : You pretty much have all Acid Rap in this song, the gentle piano to start it, the "lots of niggas wanna go out with a bang, I'm just tryna go out at all" line, the smoke reference, the beat slowly building up before exploding, some of his "barkings", the classy sung part and most importantly a kid having the time of this life in the "this part" part where you can basically hear him smiling.
Chance the Rapper - Favorite Song
Chance the Rapper - Good Ass Intro
Chvrches - The Mother We Share
Chvrches - Recover
Chvrches - We Sink
Chvrches - Gun : I am tempted to put 2 third of Chvrches album here given how half of it is made of pop hits and the other half of very interesting attempts at finding new directions for their music. I'd keep Recover and The Mother We Share on top, but that doesn't mean you should overlook some of the others like We Sink, Tether or this fantastic Gun
Courtney Barnett - Avant Gardener : I have already converted some people to my 2nd favorite song of the year, but it's such a perfect depiction of slacker Melbourne with intricate guitars and some of the unexplainable mood that perfectly defines this great city for me
Daft Punk - Contact
Danny Brown - 25 Bucks
Deafheaven - Dream House
Deafheaven - Sunbather
Disclosure - When a Fire Starts to Burn
Disclosure - Voices
Disclosure - White Noise
Drake - Hold On, We're Coming Home
Eminem - Love Game (feat Kendrick Lamar)
Fuck Buttons - Brainfreeze : Slow Focus' opener is stomping over your head, pounding in your ears, obliterating your last braincells until you're reduced down to your primal urges. That's my favorite song for running this year.[/url]
HAIM - Don't Save Me
Janelle Monae - Dance Apocalyptic
Jason Isbell - Elephant
Jon Hopkins - We Disappear
Jon Hopkins - Immunity
Kanye West - Hold My Liquor : My favorite song from Yeezus though I have seen it called the worst one several times
Kanye West - Blood on the Leaves
Kanye West - New Slaves
La Femme - Si un Jour
La Femme - Prends la Corde
Laura Marling - Breathe
Le1f - Cane Sugar
Lorde - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Mutual Benefit - Advanced Falconry The most graceful and delicate song from the most fragile album of the year
Orelsan et Gringe - Bloqué
Orelsan et Gringe - Manger c'est Tricher
Parquet Courts - Stoned and Starving
Parquet Courts - You’ve Got Me Wonderin’ Now : The flute or whatever it is gives a slightly different touch to a song from a band who some might find a bit too repetitive. Best concert of the year by the way.
Phosphorescent - Song for Zula
Queens of the Stone Age - The Vampyres of Time and Memory
Queens of the Stone Age - Kalopsia
Queens of the Stone Age - Fairweather Friends
Run The Jewels - 36" Chains Twin Hype Back might have the best punchline, Sea Legs the killer beat, but that's the song that got everything turned up to 11
Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels
Savages - She Will
Savages - Shut Up
Stromae - Formidable : coming to you from the one guy that beat Daft Punk in French sales this year. The album has its defaults but he improved his music impressively since his first album while his realistic everyday life lyrics are still as stunning. But what makes him so successful is his delivery, the way he lives his performances that deserved him so many comparisons with Jacques Brel... a lazy comparison (if only because both are from Belgium) but still one that makes some sense. Also the video, where he is singing drunk in the morning at the Louise tram stop (one of the places with the most trafic in Bruxelles) is worth seeing.
The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye
The Knife - Full of Fire
The Knife - Without You My Life Would Be Boring
Vampire Weekend - Diane Young
Vampire Weekend - Step
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sacrilege
Lots of people have been disappointed by the album, but we have to agree on this great song
Yo La Tengo - I'll Be Around
You can always count on Yo La Tengo to deliver a simple but moving song, the kind of warm and cozy ones for winter nights. And I really like the video

Changing all the time, but here are my current lists:-

2. Nils Frahm – Says
3. Roy Harper – The Enemy
4. London Grammar – Wasting My Young Years
5. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - We No Who U R
6. David Lynch & Lykke Li – I’m Waiting Here (Seems to have garnered no interest whatsoever. Nice evocation of despairing hopeless love.)
7. Sumie – Show Talked Windows (Indie Folk: The album suffers from being too samey, but this track stands out.)
8. Lady Lamb the Beekeeper – The Nothing Part II
9. Au Revoir Simone – Love You Don’t Know Me (Yep I’m a sucker for Dream Pop)
10. Queens Of The Stone Age – My God Is The Sun

30. Unknown Mortal Orchestra – So Good at Being in Trouble
31. James Blake – Retrograde
32. Cass McCombs & Karen Black – Brighter!
33. Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow (I could write a lengthy political diatribe about the ill consequences of the way that people hold others to a Platonic ideal that is a ridiculous mess of contradictions. Don't think I can participate in this years poll. Or at least any time soon. I had a cold and since I have a big nose, I blew it so hard that I blew out my right eardrum and it now just sounds to me like the aftermath of an MBV concert. I had a lot of music to catch up on too:(

Yes, you're right. Margaret Berger represented Norway in Eurovision 2013. I think she finished at 2nd place.
I'm not into Eurovision but at the time of the show I saw that my bookies had odds on the event and I decided to take a shot. And I bet on her ! I only listened to the first 5 favorites and she had the best tune. But what took her down was the poor production design of her live show. You can't win a popular contest like EV without being a bit flashy.

I made a playlist of songs included in my favourite albums of the year. The criterion is to include only one song per album, but the order in this playlist is the preference of songs, not the albums.

I have been pathetic with 2013 so far, having been wholly engrossed in the 80s poll.

So far this year I've only heard:

Janelle Monae
Annie
The Strokes
David Bowie
!!!
Franz Ferdinand
Charli XCX

I'm definitely open to recommendations, but all of these lists are so long that I don't know where to start.

Anybody care to "pimp my list"?

Moonbeam, knowing your tastes somewhat, have you listened to CHVRCHES "The Bones of What You Believe" yet? It's overflowing with great synth-pop.

Also, Henrik suggested above Margaret Berger's "I Feed You My Love," which I also think you may like a lot.

Based on these individual lists, it looks like "Get Lucky" won't be the only Daft Punk track in the top 10. Very idiosyncratic choice by the AM forums; I haven't seen nearly as much enthusiasm for "Giorgio by Morodor" anywhere else.

Albums:

1 | Daft Punk | Random Access Memories
2 | Vampire Weekend | Modern Vampires of the City
3 | The National | Trouble Will Find Me
4 | Arctic Monkeys | AM
5 | Arcade Fire | Reflektor
6 | Jason Isbell | Southeastern
7 | Danny Brown | Old
8 | Josephine Foster | I'm a Dreamer (She has an impressive range, but her vocal style won't be everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I think her vocal delivery has plenty of emotional resonance and doesn't stand in the way of the wonderfully old-time folky sound of the music. So old-time that it sounds refreshing amid all the over-produced recordings of 2013.)

9 | Agnes Obel | Aventine (It will be too sedate for some, but these haunting, atmospheric indie folk songs show that understatement can be a good thing.)

10 | Hespèrion XXI | Orient-Occident II: Hommage à la Syrie (Hespèrion XXI is an ensemble led by Jordi Savall, a Spanish viol player, conductor and composer who specializes in early Classical music. Here, he brings together musicians from Syria, Israel, Turkey, Greece and Morocco for a cross-cultural tribute to Syria. The result is elegant rather than exciting.)

11 | Haim | Days Are Gone
12 | Çiğdem Aslan | Mortissa (A female singer from a minority ethnic group performing songs from a usually male genre called rebetiko. Rebetiko is a style of traditional folk music shared by Greece and Turkey that originated in the 1920s when there were forced population exchanges between Greeks and Turks. The album has plenty of authentic personality.)

13 | Chvrches | The Bones of What You Believe
14 | John Grant | Pale Green Ghosts
15 | Guy Clark | My Favorite Picture of You
16 | James Blake | Overgrown
17 | Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds | Push the Sky Away
18 | Charles Bradley | Victim of Love
19 | Janelle Monáe | The Electric Lady
20 | Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators | Tortured Soul
21 | Gregory Porter | Liquid Spirit
22 | Caitlin Rose | The Stand-In

30 | David Bowie | The Next Day
...will keep us together.

Not sure if you will love or hate it, but you need to at least listen to Julia Holter's Loud City Song...a masterpiece.

Also, not sure if you like Daft Punk, but you love italo disco so therefore "Giorgio by Moroder" is a must-hear.

Finally, give Sky Ferreira a shot - start with "I Blame Myself" and "You're Not the One". And I see you listed Charli XCX...you need to get her latest single "SuperLove" if you've not already, as it's fantastic.
